If you've been following the saga in Chico's Bidwell Park, you'll no doubt empathize w/ this article...
Well said Gregg Payne.... I commend your voice of freedom.
There are other embattled park courses across the country, with environmentalist's only wanting to prevent people from using their own park lands...

Barking up the wrong tree
Chico Enterprise-Record

Back in the spring of 2002, I was proposing to paint native tree and wildlife images to camouflage the concrete freeway pillars in lower Bidwell Park.

One of the Friends of Bidwell Park, Josephine Guardino, said the city should do an environmental impact report for the art project.

Just last year, Randy Abbott voiced his concerns about a chime sculpture project I had proposed for the Humboldt Park, former site of the Old Humboldt Scrapyard.

Their obstruction of these art projects, as well as the Chico Observatory, the Annie Bidwell Trail, and disc golf in the park, seem to be pretty counterproductive public relations.

Why run around cackling like Henny Penny and Turkey Lurkey trying to stir up a panic over nothing, and lose the support of folks that love both nature and outdoor recreation?

Why alienate successful and hard-working independent environmentalists that want no part of stagnant political groups.

The credibility of our hard fought and won environmental policies can be more undermined by wacky "high road" extremism than by evil corporate greed.

With all the real issues out there, maybe we should call off our own watchdogs when they get to barking up the wrong trees.

Our modern society faces tough new challenges and we need new solutions.

Affordable accessible healthy opportunities that bring our friends and families together, get us out and turn us on to nature are a great place to start.
