The Discraft Michigan Disc Golf Series Art Auction officially opens at 12:01 am (EST), August 26, 2005 and closes at 12:01 am, September 1, 2005. All bids are to be submitted to Mark Ellis by email (lizlawltd@aol.com) or phone (248-505-3568) by the close of the auction.
Ten sets of discs are available as described below. Individual discs are not available, only complete sets (six discs) are up for bid. Each set is numbered and signed and will be either hand delivered or mailed at the limited option of the winning bidders. To inspect the art, please go to: www.mdgo.org. (http://www.mdgo.org.)
HOW THE SETS WERE CREATED (stuff collectors love to know)
In 2005, Discraft, the World Leader in Disc Sports, became the title sponsor of the Michigan Disc Golf Organization, leading to the renaming of the state series to the Discraft Michigan Disc Golf Series (DMDGS).
Discraft offered to supply 500 discs to the series as sponsorship, including the new SuperColor printing process which allows unparalleled color and quality of artistic reproduction. By agreement between the state organization and the individual tournament directors of the host events it was decided to split the discs equally. Five preliminary events plus the finals were scheduled, meaning that 83 custom discs were created for each event (500 Divided by 6). The tournament directors were given half of the discs. The remaining discs were organized into six disc sets, making 41 sets in total. Only 41 sets were made. No others will ever be made of this series.
31 sets were offered for sale at the price of $120 per set ($20 per disc times 6 discs). Those sets sold out quickly. Ten sets were set aside and not offered for sale until now. The ten sets were hand numbered (one through ten) and signed by the artist and Jim Kenner, owner of Discraft.
The concept, from the inception, was to create unique, superb artwork for each of the six tournaments of the state series. The organization called upon famed artist Tony Kroes for the task. Tony is the only artist ever commissioned to create an original piece for the cover of Disc Golf World News and was featured in the inaugural issue of the Flying Disc Art Gallery. Tony has done great pieces for many tournaments, the 2000 World Championships, the PDGA National Tour, the Disc Golf Foundation, J-Bird Discs, Maceman and others. This year, Tony has limited his disc golf artistic output to the state series, two fabulous private courses (Flip City and Blue Gill) and one blow-out birthday party.
Discraft offered to create the sets in the discs of our choosing. We chose three D Buzzzs and three Cam Todd Challengers (with permission, of course, thanks Cam!) to make up each 6 disc set. As you may know, the Cam Todd Challenger is an especially stiff Challenger, based on the preference of the former World Champion. Thus the discs are not only gorgeous collectors items; they are also from among the most popular putters and mid-ranges on the market.
THE BIDDING
Ten sets are available. To bid, please identify the set being bid upon (one through ten) and the amount of the bid per disc, with a minimum bid of $20 per disc. The discs are secured in plastic sleeves and boxed and can be mailed for $10 per set. For anyone attending the DMDGS Finals at Ludington over Labor Day weekend ( J-Bird is adding $1000 cash to the Open Purse, we are adding the superb private course known as Flip City to the mix and its all right next to the Lake Michigan beaches) or the USDGC in October the sets may be hand delivered for free.
Winning bidders are expected to send payment promptly. Payments not postmarked within one week of the close of bidding risk cancellation.
THE PROCEEDS
Funds collected from this auction will be used to finance the DMDGS and promote the sport of disc golf. Tony Kroes has declined financial compensation. None of the volunteers of the state series are paid for their efforts.
THANKS
Discraft , headquartered in Michigan, is the lead sponsor of Michigan disc golf and has been since the game was born. Almost every course, club and major event in the state has had Discrafts wide-ranging assistance. Our state organization has crowned champions in the various divisions for over a decade, always with great support from Discraft.
Jim Kenner and the Discraft crew (Gail McCall, Mike Wagner, Pad Timmons, Keith Murray, Marnie White) give knowledge, talent and motivation to promoting the sport. Discraft designs great discs and great courses to test those discs. Thank you, Discraft. Thank you very much.
