Hey, I was just wondering if anyone has a putter that they really think helps their game. I currently use a classic aviar, but I am not very consistent with it. (probably from lack of practice!) Any help is appreciated!

Through my search of putters, I've found that pro-rhyno is a good disc, as long as the thumbtrack doesn't get in your way. The wizard would be my recommendation.

Aug 20 2005, 09:09 PM
I did a search on this last week & found a lot of people throw a lot of different discs.
Name a putter that is in production & you'll find someone who uses it & likes it.

In my months of playing so far I've had 3.
Millenium Omega SuperSoft: Like it, made some incredible shots with it, but it became TOO floppy (my fault) and now doesnt get thrown much. I would like another in a heavier weight and maybe in their "not so soft" plastic.

Innova DX Rhyno: Love this disc from within 150 feet. Good overall putter & cheap. Nothing more to say. Great putt/approach.

Gateway Wizard: (soft) : I bought 2 of these today at a local tourney (we just stopped so we could buy discs, lol). I really like this disc but for "soft" plastic it sure is hard. I made about a 75 footer first round with it. Also found if you let it get air under it, it will take off.
I like it & plan on giving it some practice time. (I bought 2, same weight/softness)

Good luck.

it is kind of like asking what kind of car you should drive, what kind of guitar you should play, or what kind of shoes you should wear. depends on what works to your liking. i like JK Pro Aviar-x's because they are soft and grab the chains. The JK Aviar-x and the KC Pro Aviar are the same exact mold (big bead Aviar) but different plastics. If you lik the feel of stiff plastic you might prefer the KC Aviar... Or if you want to be different -- putt with a Coyote. seriously -- it's a pretty good putter too. :D

I thought that if I was putting with a Pro-D Challenger, that meant that everyone was putting with one too.

Either case, Pro-D Challengers are the shiz.

just use whatever feels the best and suits ur style of putt.

If someone putts hard, they are probably going to use a stiffer more stable putter.
If someone putts soft, they are probably going to use a softer more flippy putter.
And more importantly, it doesn't matter what you use as long as it goes it!!

Thanks for all of the replies, had more than 13 in 24 hrs. Next time I play a round, I will try to use that Wizard a little more than I have been. I guess it is just a matter of getting used to the putter, but I am really inconsistent with the aviar I am using now.

Aug 21 2005, 02:20 PM
Most people began using the Wizard as a lay up disc.
After a few long lay up shots wind up going in with many near misses, they start using it when they are closer to the basket and eventually it becomes their everything under 200 disc.
Take advantage of the missed stamped special on our site, 5 for $35 or 10 for $50 and you can get a wide range of flexibilities and surface grips. www.gdstour.com (http://www.gdstour.com)

Brand loyalists may still not want to admit how good of a disc the wizard is but more and more people are finding out everyday! :cool:By looks it may seem similiar to Aviars and challengers but by flight and feel, well,,, you should find out for yourself!

I can't find anything that works better for me then a DX rhyno.

Aug 21 2005, 05:24 PM
Yay. Another DX Rhyho fan. Don't see many of those :D

Seriously. Mine is so old & beat in it's crazy, but it flys perfect (straight), lands perfect and sometimes even hits the chains.

I did well today again with the Wizard. Great disc. May start using for it for longer shots. But it has some serious competition with my old Rhyno.

TreeShark
Aug 21 2005, 05:45 PM
I have tried throwing a rhyno, but the thing is possessed for me. For instance, I had to make a five foot putt (challenging), and when I threw it, it hit the chains and bounced out, rolled to the bottom of the hill, and left me with yet another 30-40' putt (which I didn't make). Not only that, I could not throw it for any distance because of the thumbtracks. I think I would rather putt with an archangel than a rhyno.

Aug 21 2005, 06:31 PM
I've tried many putters, but recently I'm on the Wizard bandwagon. I was just trying one out and I was amazed at how well this disc worked for me. It is a truly accurate disc for me. Like some one has already stated you have to find the putter that works best for you. My best suggestion is to stay away from Champion and Elite Z plastic for putting, as they lack some of the chain grabbing properties that the: Pro D, DX, and S plastics have. The experiment is up to you as to which is the best putter to use.
Oh one more thing, depending on your style of putting will determine how stiff a plastic you will want. If your putting style has loft, go with the hard/stiff plastic. If you throw your putters flatter or line drive try the softer putters

I think another thing to consider, is how does it feel in your hand? Does it sit at an appropriate angle? Does it snag on your fingers occasionally?

Aug 21 2005, 09:22 PM
Yeah, the DX rhyno is where it is at for. I even bought a sweet SE rhyno with the dimple, but I can't beat the results of the DX. Atleast this way I can go buy 5-6 for practice without having to look too hard or spend too much.

After putting with a whamo 86 mold for 17 yrs, I switched to the wizard as my main putter. I use my 86 now for airbounce shots, annie approaches and annie putts, but for most putts 80 feet and in it's the wizard.

The wizard also makes for a good short driver/longer approach disc (260' and in).

That's good. :D

I know this is my 4th post on a simple subject. But today I was excited to have my Wizard.
On our way to the course I pulled it out of the bag & started showing it too people in other cars while we were driving.... mouthing the word "Wizard" :D I'm sure they thought I was crazy.....
On the course I'd tell people. "Don't touch my Wizard, it doesn't like you" or "Don't touch it, you'll steal its power"

Fun stuff. It's only a disc, but yes, I do like it & glad I picked a couple up.
Thanks to everyone (in previous posts) for suggesting it.

I have also jumped on the Wizard bandwagon, as of a few months ago. I carry two soft Wizards for putts and short upshots, a G9i (hard) Wizard for drives, and an E Wizard for when I need something with a little overstability. The S Wizard is an amazingly straight disc. Never thrown anything like it. If I am playing a one-disc round, though, I still stick with the KC Aviar. It does just about everything. I can definitely throw it further than any of the wizards.

Mike Moser's Peach Beadless Aviar..it seems to work for him!

Aug 22 2005, 02:50 PM
I too have started using a wizard. It definately is a straight flyer; also, it seems to fight the wind better than other putters I have used.

The soft is beating up quickly for me, and I have had several dead hits on the chains that bounced out. So, I am using a medium and firm.

Of the two, the firm is better for me in the wind (could it be that it is max weight and the medium is not?). I hit one of the longer birdies I have ever had in a tough wind; it just seemed to find the basket.

I'm not sure if the medium one catches the chains any better. I throw the medium when I'm sure I'm gonna hit chains; the firm when there is the possibity of hitting obstacles (guess this counts as a drive though). If it's windy, I go firm all the way. The medium seems to take off on me though, not sure why. I was thinking for putters and midranges that heavier flys further, but I'm not sure.

Wizard is a must try. It has me want to try more Gateway products. Maybe I can scrape up some cash at the end of the week and order some.

BTW, my gf is using my old elite z putt'r that I could never do anything with. For me, it was terrible in the wind. She putts very well with it.

No disc is going to make you a better putter but finding one that feels good in you hand may help give you a little more confidence. Most part putters are going to fly pretty similar from 15-35 feet.

Can't go wrong with an aviar. I had been using dx aviars for the last 7 years but just switched to the new proline aviars. I don't know what it is about them, but they just always seem to find the chains for me and rarely bounce out.

The best part about the prolines is that they make such an ugly sound when you hit the basket low, that you will be sure not to do that ever again/ doooiiiiiinnnggg.

If you like aviars and have yet to try the proline, I highly reccomend it.

I am definitely going to try the wizard next time I go. Even discgolfreview.com is saying good things about it. Hopefully I can go tonight, even though it is a hundred degrees out there. I like to use a disc that will work for all putting conditions and distances and a mold that can also be used as a short range driver (<300'). I chose the Wizard, but the Magnet, Challenger, Aviar and Rhyno (and perhaps others) all seem to be good choices as well.

Any SOFT Wizard. Mediums and I'm guessing Hards, are whole different beasts. The softs and super softs are nice stable / understable putters. The Mediums are GREAT upshot disks, but a bit to overstable for my taste for putting. If I'm more than 40 feet(150 feet board distance) out, it's realistically an upshot for me and I use a medium.

I'm not sure if it's that I putt too soft, or if it's just the one supersoft I have, but I had more chainwhip-outs with my supersoft in 1 round than in a dozen rounds with a soft. If I miss with my soft, it's because I screwed up somehow(for my form). I just kept putting the supersoft on the middle chain and it'd kick straight back out without even hitting the pole. I have 2 witnesses that can verify that that supersoft must have been possessed.

On a better note, switching to a soft wizard has GREATLY improved my game. I had tried a champ rhyno, a big bead aviar, and a little bead aviar, and I always seemed to miss right. Now that I've gotten good with the wizard, I can putt with any of my putters pretty consistantly from 20 feet, but I just found the wizard so consistant that I was able to figure out what I was doing inconsistantly and do what I could to correct it.

Allbeit, I am NOT the best putter in the world. I can make 15 foot putts consistantly, and I rarely 3 putt from 30 feet.

Aviar X. Holds the line. Doesn't get away from you. 2 years now. Awesome.

Aug 29 2005, 01:50 AM
Aviars are great putters. I have more birdies with my new wizard firm at 175. I have more bounce outs with the soft and medium. I think it has to do with the firm being more overstable and handling the wind better. I did whip out my 173 med wizard when it was still today, but guess what? Bounce out! With the firm wizard, I only miss when I hit the top of the basket or the bottom, no more missing left or right.

I have every reason not to like the wizard, but the firm is money! Got a Demon coming from Sun Kings; if I like it as much, I will probably try more Gateway putters.

I still carry mostly Discraft. And, if they made a right turn disc like the sidewinder, I'd have all Discraft.

There x out special cannot be beat. It lets you try the different ones. If I had only the softs, I may not be such a wizard freak (or is it cause I play D&D).

I have yet to try my e wizard, simply cause it seems light, and I have a friend that may want it (I would rather give away a new disc, than a used disc).

I'm thinking of calling sun kings again and seeing if they have firms in 175 because I love the stamp too. If I get that for a tattoo, is it copy right infringement? :)

I have a black Teebird L I love, but everytime I take it on the course, it costs me about 45 minutes, just trying to find the **** thing, lol. Guess it might not be a huge factor for some, but I play a course with a lot of sage brush, and even a brightly colored disc is hard to find occasionally.

Oh, the thread is about putters ... never mind.

We should have plenty of Black missed stamps by the end of the week.
I believe some of the medium would be considered firm by our competitors standards.

Aug 30 2005, 10:01 PM
I agree. I was suprised at how "firm" the soft wizards were.
I've only been playing for about 6 months but this is the first putter that has gave me confidence in my putts & sometimes that's enough.
I've made some incredible shots with the wizard & now have started using it for longer approach shots.
If I was smart I'd buy a 10 pack & sell them to my friends. I had a guy offer me $15 for one after letting him use one my Wizards for just one round. :) (I didn't sell it though, I only have 2 of 'em)

And off topic but yes, I quickly learned that dark colored discs have no place in my bag (esp on driver discs). Even in the fairway these are sometimes tough to spot.

awesome driver, not so much of a fan for putting cause its really stiff

Sep 01 2005, 11:14 PM
I love my challenger for putts enough that I ordered another one mainly for driving(may be petty, but there's a lot of holes at the local courses that are less than 220, but still have a strong left hook) However, after using it tonight on only open holes...it's not as stable as I was expecting...would the X be much more stable than D?

The first 2000 wizards had a proto wizard ink stamp on the back and were a little thinner in the flight plate.
This was great for feel between the fingers and thumb but caused a lot more dimples in the top when ran in the softer plastics. Some players like the dimples and even flex the discs backwards on purpose now to get them to dimple up in 4 places, but stores and vendors seem to have a problem getting them like this.
We have increased the thickness of the flight plate a few thousandths twice since for manufacturing consistancy.
Now prototype wizard would refer to a way of manufacturing where we add dry weight filler to the mix in order to get the chalky feel.
As far as I know the change in thickness caused no change in flight. The flight of almost all wizards produced is not very differentfrom run to run, its one of the things people compliment us most on about the wizard ( it has a very predictable flight from run to run).
The amount of resistance or shape of the Wizard over and under the parting line is almost identical, which is what gives it the same stability over a very wide range of speeds.
We also make a much Wider variety of flexibilities and surface grips than just the supersoft, soft, medium, frim, H and E that we market.
Of course supersoft flat wizards will be slightly more overstable at slower speeds than the soft or medium and the firmer ones will also stay flatter and be a bit more overstable. I dont think the stability of the "S" is all that much different when throw off the tee though, but softer discs will get broken in easier than medium and firm.

The H and E have a lot more fade because there is less surface friction and they dont get broken in as easy!
All wizards have about the same resistance to turn though because of the bead.

We will be releasing a beadless wizard (called The MAGIC)sometime this winter, that will hopefully be a little understable for putting and at higher speeds.

I was kickin ace with my Wizard today.
I FINALLY learned that short arm putt technique that I found at DGR.

Lucky for me I bought 2 wizards when I had a chance too. I threw a approach shot last week & hit a tree with my Soft wizard. It has a noticeable "bend" in the flight plate where it hit & I can't get it flat again.

As soon as I get my practice basket in next week I'm going for the 5 wizard deal. Practice practice.

So. feel free to make the "Magic" just don't screw around with my Wizard!! :D

My soft wizard I use for putting has actually aquired a dimple right under the Wizard's feet because I ALWAYS hold the disc in that spot when putting. It's actually very nice to know I'm gripping the disc the same. Would bending it so it has 4 such dimples make the flight more consistant as it'd balance out the up/down force generated by the flight plate?

Also, I kicked some hiney with this disc this weekend, nearly pulling off a comback in the 4th and final round (first 3: 18 holes, last 1: 9 holes) to make up 3 strokes and to force the championship into extra holes. I missed 1 putt in my last 33 holes, and it was on hole 8 of 9, 15 feet :(. I had just sunk 2 40 footers, back to back, to catch up and tie up the event, parked a hole, and missed the putt.

Pat,
I hear the 2 backwards bends that make 4 dimples also make the Wizards pop up from slight hyzer, but I havent witnessed this first hand.
If I want my disc to be a little less overstable, I factor down the bead some.

Order arrived today with a bonus black wizard in the box. Thanks guys. Also I got my first firm wizard. Is this a disc or a weapon?! Looking forward to throwing this on Sunday and seeing what happens.

the best putter is the one in your hand.

the one in my hand is purple and about 14 years old and says Aviar Putter on it.

I would think the best putter would be the one in the basket. :D
Seriously though, putting starts with confidence and confidence starts with the way it feels.
Once peole get in front of a box of wizards, they usually find a flex or surface grip that really matches what they are looking for. Once people begain using the Wizard, it is pretty hard to go back to anything else!
If someone can describe what they like in a putter we can usually find a Wizard that fits their need.
If you dont have a vendor in your area to feel the Wizards, call the shop and tell Justin or Ozzy what you like, you wont be dissapointed.

Sep 09 2005, 03:45 PM
I'll second that. The best thing to do is try their 5 for 35 deal and try their different putters. The wizard was recommended for me for windy conditions. And, I do agree that they fight the wind, and my putting has improved drasticly. They are hard to find in my area though.

Definately worth a try.

Hi Dave
I just tried this out and it works great; now my Wizards pop up from hyzer nice and flat and keep that line right into the ground. However, this begs the question as to whether this is an illegal modification and in violation of 802.01 C

Sep 09 2005, 04:41 PM
That's a good question, but how would it be different than those who throw their disc into a tree or wall repeatedly to reduce stability.

I dont see a problem with flexing your disc,
even if it makes dimples in the top.
