Most definitely. Finish school so you can choose how you make your money.

I'll try to make the NorCal Champs. You should come down for the SoCal Champs at La Mirada. Definitely Maui though

do what JJ did.

play open and deny.

your only am tournament should be worlds next year. This will help your game a lot also.

Then play pro, you have the skills. Just deny cash if you want to compete in collegiate athletics or the Olympics. If you are talking academic scholarships then I doubt that professional disc golf will get in the way of that.

You might want to send a message to Tom Lowry (the JDGF TD).
He has done quite a bit of research into this, and does not even have a payout for his Junior players because of scholarship conflicts.

Aug 20 2005, 04:04 AM
Any money you make from disc should not effect academic scholarships

Write a nice letter to the NCAA. Don't wait around the DISCussion page for the correct answer.

Aug 20 2005, 04:20 PM
Aren't you sponsored by Gateway? I would worry more about that than the pro issue. It was just a couple of years ago that a football player from Colorado was in trouble due to some skiing sponsorship that he had accepted while he was younger.

I don't think the NCAA even knows what disc golf is.

Dave,
What is that Tourney like ??? It sounds like something that would be really cool to be in. Where do most of DG Golfers stay for accomodations. And approxiamately what kind of airline prices are running at that period of time.

And is that cool picture in your profile in Hawaii !!!
Man, if it is that would be a sweet place to play. I would probably take a picture at every hole.

right, asking here is almost like doing an opinion poll to determine if Iraq was in any way responsible for 9-1-1

I'm not trying to get a concrete answer on here I was just wondering what you guys thought. I am going to contact the NCAA and consult my counselors before doing anything.

How many advanced tournaments do you need to win before you move up?

Aug 22 2005, 12:28 PM
Matt, I can't imagine that turning pro in anything affects academic scholorships. Would flipping burgers for money affect your ability to get a academic scholarship?

As an aside, I've found that playing disc golf and typing posts here slowly wittles away at your IQ.

Sincerely,

85 and falling

Aug 22 2005, 12:49 PM
For academic scholarships you'll have to ask whomever is giving the scholarships rather than the NCAA.

Here's a reference from our Competition Director:

We should specifically point them to the NCAA. They can be reached for eligibility issues at (317) 917-6222. More general information can be found at http://www1.ncaa.org/membership/membership_svcs/eligibility-recruiting/faqs/amateurism_tryouts#awards

Do it already Matt!!! You been talking this same crap for awhile now. You've had plenty of time to figure this out. Why would you care what WE think, you should already know the answer to that!

I swear if I see you listed Adv. one more time...J/K

Matt , Do what is best, for you ,in the long run!! What everyone else say's, does or thinks is absolutely irrelevent in relation to your life decisions!! :D
If there is a doubt as to playing pro then play am,s , sell all your winnings and put it into a college fund!!! :DBAGGER!!!lol!!!

Aug 22 2005, 02:21 PM
You can play pro sports and then come back and play college...look at baseball players/football players. Guys sign baseball contracts wallow in the minors for a few years and then go back and play college sports. Guy by the name of Trajan Langdon (I know I butchered the spelling, but I have no idea how to spell it...) went into the Padres minor league system, then went back to play college basketball and did pretty well if I remember right...

Sponsorships are what generally cause more problems.

slowmo_1
Aug 26 2005, 03:01 PM
you can play college sports in something OTHER than what you have played professional in...therefore you wouldn't be able to play college disc golf, but there is no such thing so no biggie.

The bigger question is sponsership. There was a guy on Colorado a few years ago that was a world championship skier that wanted to play football for CU but was denied because of skiing sponserships.

Like everyone else says...contact the NCAA and get an official ruling.

If you're just worried about academic or need based scholarships, then it will not affect those at all. Need based are determined by the FAF which looks at yours and your parents income tax statements...I doubt you'll make enough from disc golf to throw you into a high enough bracket to not get federal money.

On a different note you need to talk to your high school's athletic director and get them to contact the UIL to determine what it will do to your high school eligibility. That might be a bigger issue since you're only a junior (right?)

What kind of scholarships are you going after Matt. I have received scholarships for the last three years at OU. Academic and sports scholarships fall under different guidelines.
