I was rereading some of my Disc Golf World News magazines and came across the article about the 84 Worlds. In it they talked about the "first overstable disc" called the Walley, that was voted illegal to play in that tournament because hardly anyone had one.

Does anyone remember this disc and who made it? I have been helping a fellow disc golfer put together a chronological
list of discs through the years and would love to hear about any great long forgotten discs that most people may not know about. I think I've got most if not all of the Innova/Discraft discs down but I know there were a lot more good ones out there.

For example, does anyone remember the Rock N Roller? I saw somewhere on the web that it was the heaviest disc golf disc before the weight rule came into effect. I think it was made by the same people that made the original Puppy.

So I thought I would see if anyone out there remembers these?

Maybe another interesting thing would be to see what discs each World Champ used in their win. We already know what Nate Doss used this year.

I've got a Rock n Roller, it's not one of the super heavy ones. Ahart sold one that was like 260g.

I've got one of those Whizbacks that's like 230g.

Just picked up a Flazer that's sort of rare.

Wish S. Johnson would finish and publish his disc golf Disctionary.

I recently bought a disk to match my game

EDIT: Doh, my CHAMPION Alky pic got dissed. :(

That's a nice site. Has almost all of them doesn't it? And pictures to boot. The guy that did that site should write a book.

It even has the Monrobee Flying Ace, I've actually seen one of those and the edge is so sharp you could shave with it. Tom Monroe could probably add more to that story.

Dr. Stancil's book will be great if it ever comes out.

mf100, I really enjoyed your site. The one thing I wanted to do was put all the discs in a sort of chronological order, to give a sort of evolution or trends of the discs. I have always liked to put things in some form of order. I can understand things better that way. Have you ever thought of having them in a chronological list? You could even have a list of "Firsts". An example would be the first overstable disc, first wide rimmed disc, first low profile disc.

I'll ask Tom if he can help you get in touch with Dr. Stancil. It might be good to ask some guys like Jim Palmieri, Dan Doyle, Stork, Tom, etc. what they remember about the discs. Might make an interesting e-mail group.

I noticed on the Monrobee disc, you listed Martin from Denmark as a reference. Have you heard about his video and how that is coming along? I would like to get a copy of it when it comes out. He filmed a lot at our local course and interviewed Tom.

Keep up the good work,

Doug

I will check with Martin how things are going, he has a family know, they got a kid maybe 6months ago so I think he has been really busy.

I can e-mail you an excel-list if you want to (If you PM me your mail adress), ? It contains all the golf-discs I know of their you can filter or sort how you want it, year of appereance, overstable or whatever. Its not complete but not far from....

Last time I talked to Rick Neil he said he was helping with S. Johnson's book. Dave D would also have his contact. You could also do a search in the Miscellaneous area, two years ago he posted looking for pictures of certain discs, find that and you can PM him.

Nice #7 Night Flyer, the hardest of the 8 to find. Still trying to get a mint 44X, got a lightly used one.

Aug 13 2005, 03:35 PM
Wow, that night flyer is interesting. Was it the first glow disc?

I think the story of this disc is probably an interesting one:
http://www.discgolfsweden.se/discar/discar_sokdisc.aspx?DiscId=1612

I really liked the two AMF Voit discs when they were in production. Since they only came in two weights (one per diameter) I thought it was pretty suspicious when the weight limit was imposed - and the only discs made by major sporting goods manufacturers were illegal.

How different would sponsorship be if the PDGA hadn't frozen out AMF Voit?

Hey Rizbee, funny you should mention the AMF discs, because an old pro mentioned to us that we should definitely include those on our list.

You aren't the only one that wondered about that rule. There was not a little bit of controversy when the 21 cm rule came in and also when they decided on the weight rule. The weight rule definitely knocked a few discs out of the game.

Of course, at the time, there was definitely a trend to heavier and heavier discs and some people wanted to put a stop to that, but if you look at the discs that have come out in the past 10 or 20 years, they don't need to be super heavy to go a long way. I think one disc that most people would admit was a little on the dangrous side was the sharp edged Pflazer. From what I understand, that thing could cut into a tree easily. All you would need is a 260 gram Pflazer and you would have yourself a weapon. :o

If you have read Victor's book, then you know controversy has been with us since the time of Fred and Walter. You could write an interesting book just on the controversies that have been a part of the sport since the beginning.

But you make a great point about AMF being a major company that if they were involved in the sport, might have brought a lot of weight to the sport in the minds of the public.

Can you think of any discs that are not on that site? It looks like he has go them all! I've got that site book marked.

Kjell,
Do you have the 40X with the World Frisbee Distance Record on it? Funny to see the word Frisbee on another brand of disc, leave it up to Victor to push the envelope. I've got one I can send pic, if I can figure how. I'm still hoping on working a trade with Dendog for one of his 44X's.

When I joined the PDGA, Johnny & Adele Sias were the volunteer membership folks. They tried over 4 years too get members their PDGA number on those Midnight Flyer mini's.
I got three out of my four digits, but unfortunately they never made the # 9. So I was out of luck. I am one of the 2900 - 3000 group.

Aug 18 2005, 11:36 AM

Im not sure, but I think they were just sold in Sweden and Denmark, Swepeter might have a better memory than me . Great discs but you dont find many around, they where really easy to break, specially some runs of the 70mold ! I damage one throwing distance
