For the second year in a row, Rizbee Jr. and I went off on a multi-day disc golf road trip. The idea is to play as many new (to us) courses as possible in a few day's time. We wedge the trip into the end of the summer, just before football practice starts for him, and in between my crazy work schedule.

This year we headed north from San Diego on a 1,200 mile round-trip that went as far north as Santa Cruz. We left home at 3pm on Wed., 8/3 and returned home at 11pm on Sat., 8/6 - 3 1/2 days. We played 13 different courses, covering 203 unique holes.

Here's the run-down:

Tustin - Frontier Park - 9 holes
South ElMonte - Whittier Narrows - 18 holes
Tehachapi - Meadowbrook Park - 9 holes
Bakersfield - Riverview Park - 9 holes
Bakersfield - Silver Creek Park - 9 holes
Taft - Franklin Field - 18 holes
Atascadero - Heilman Park - 18 holes
Carmel - Carmel Valley Middle School - 18 holes
Seaside - CSUMB Cypress Course - 18 holes
Seaside - CSUMB Oaks Course - 18 holes
Felton - Brown Mouse - 14 Holes
Santa Cruz - DeLaveaga Park - 27 holes
Sylmar - Veterans Memorial Park - 18 holes

The most important criteria was playing courses that we hadn't played before, so there are some great courses that we didn't cover on this trip, but...

We had a blast!! Now the planning begins for Tour de Rizbee 2006!!

Allen,
Sounds like a great time. Just curious to how many Courses you have
played in your life ?? And your son also ??

I have played a little over 80, and AJ (my son) has played about 40. He has only been playing about a year and a half.

I only count "permanent" courses that have baskets of some sort. When I first started playing we played on a lot of temp courses for tournaments, but I don't count those. My total would be a lot higher, but I stopped playing for about 15 years...

The "basket" stipulation being why you 'skippped' the obstacle course @ U.C. Santa Cruz? Sounds like a great trip regardless!

Partly that, but mostly time. We made it to Santa Cruz after 7pm on Friday, with just enough time to find and play the Brown Mouse course in Fenton. We were at DeLa by 8am Saturday to start playing, but that round took a long time - we were searching for a lot of baskets as the signage was incorrect.

We finished DeLa at noon and decided to start driving back - needed to be home (San Marcos) that night. We still made it to Sylmar in time to play the course - finishing in the dark.

We'll get back to Santa Cruz and play the campus course eventually. The directory says it has "some" baskets - so it counts!!

....it was long ago--early 90's?--when I played there, and my only impression is of some sweeping ocean vistas....lovely site for a round, at least! :p

The two CSUMB courses won the award for eeriest setting. The Cypress Course winds around some large cypress and eucalyptus trees, over the remnants of foundations of old military barracks and other buildings. Lots of "streets to nowhere."

The Oaks Course covers ground that used to be used by the military for field training and recreation. My mind was blown by one tee where we were teeing off across a former baseball field - the fences, stands and scoreboard were still in place, but all of the grass was dead and replaced by weeds. It reminded me of all of the post-armageddon movies.
