Yeah I know maybe I could put this topic thread under "Courses". But I am also a "Player". :D
I just played my 40th Course yesterday since I started in September.
I was down vacationing in Destin,Fl. last week. Came back up thru Pensacola and Mobile and BHam.
Played:
1.Sunset Disc Golf Course in Gulf Breeze, Fl.- A nice little Course. Fairly short but some interesting Holes. With a swamp like island to play a couple of holes on. Give it a 7 out 10 !!

2.Fairhope Disc Golf Course in Mobile,AL.- Very deceiving Course at first. Looks like a small open muncipal Course the first few Holes. Then Hole 6 goes back in the woods. And plays very difficult. The signage on the Course was horrible. Got lost last couple of Holes. Talked to two Club Members who pointed me to the last Hole. They gave me a scorecard with Course Map. Wish
I had this earlier. Great potential here for a good course. Needs to be better marked and taken care of. Give it a 6.5 out of 10 !!

3. Cottage Hill Park in Mobile,AL.- A really great Professional Wooded Course. Very good markers and very challenging. Give it a 9 out of 10

4.Langan Park in Mobile- Nothing spectacular. I liked the front nine better than back. Some cool Holes in front with neat swamp. Back is Long and Open. Some of the Holes are confusing and not well marked. If I played it much I would just probably do the front nine and concentrate on the other better Courses in Mobile. 7 out of 10

5.U of South Alabama. in Mobile- Got there at 7:20pm. So had to rush it to finish before dark. A long and challenging Course. If I am ever back down there I want to play this. Meanders around the College there. Alot of holes where you throw into the streets. Makes it that more interesting. I like it .I give it 8 out of 10

6.Citronelle in Mobile- Way out in the middle of nowhere. A pine wooded Course. Not well kept. Not worth the 30 mile drive from Interstate. Could have potential if anyone cared to keep it up.
6 out of 10

7.Chickasaw Community Park in Mobile- A very enjoyable Course. Has some challenging but fair Holes. I liked the set up. Has good elevation changes and some water.
I give it 8.5 out of 10

8.Chickasabouge Park in Mobile- A very good wooded Course with great signage. Not as good or challenging as Cottage Hill but
still a stellar Course. 8 out of 10

9.George Ward Park in Birmingham, AL,- A very beautiful Course.
Long and challenging. Very enjoyable. Although I got confused towards the end with multiple practiced Holes in the Wooded
part ??
Overall, I think a few of the Baskets could be moved to make it even more challenging Course. I hope Bham can someday get more Courses. This is a good one to have if you have only one. But I would think you might suffer as a player if you are a native Bham person playing tourneys in other cities on tightly technical wooded courses. Just one Course like this to play on would limit your potential. Don't see how a top rated Pro player could be groomed and developed from this city alone
He would probably have to move (or make a long commute) to Mobile or Huntsville to have a chance to be competitve among the very best. It just seems from my observation that you have to have variety of at least two to three Courses to really develop your game at a Pro Level. Just my opinion..
I give it a 8 out of 10

Well there you have it nine Courses in about 27 hours. ;)
I think Cottage Hills and Chickasaw were my favorites.
With U of South Alabama my 3rd favorite and George Ward close behind at fourth.

Gee I am soooo jealous of Mobile, AL. Some really great Courses and such a variety to choose from. Makes me want to ponder about the idea of looking at some real estate down there in the future

You should post these comments on the discgolf.com site as well. I usually go there first to read up on a course and then I come here.

just a thought

Ahem!

Perhaps you have not heard of Joe Thacker, of the "Joe Bro's" fame. Or perhaps, Tim Keith who has been giving Brad Hammock a run for his money this past spring at a few NT stops. Or how the course pro is World Famous Tom Monroe, who also happens to be the person who taught me how to play.

Last time I played, which was friday the 5th of August. The course was set up in a relatively easy setup. You missed our two monster holes, #5 and #11, which easily add 1 to 2 strokes per hole. Just on friday I shot a 49 on the 18 in the current setup, with one bogey.

Our holes in the "woods" were installed about 18 months ago. We are not allowed to put in tee pads or any additional signage, so navigation is difficult if you do not have a local with you. But they were put in for the reasons you stated, B'ham golfers were having difficult times at tight wooded courses.

I think that George Ward is a great course for grooming an excellent all around golfer. Personally I think it is doing me good, I cashed in my first ever open tournament (unsanctioned /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif ) just this weekend. Next time you are in Birmingham, drop me a line. I will set up the course in it's hardest configuration for ya. I think the distance on 18 is 5400ft right now, it can stretch to 6200ft!

Glad you liked the course.
