I'm thinking about going camping at a place that has a disc golf course. Unfortunately they don't have real targets they have something called a tone-tube target. Can anyone tell me what a tone-tube target is? Is it fun to play disc golf with these targets?

I believe it's a steel post, with a cylander attached around the top with a few chains hanging off that. No basket. You know you made it when you hit that things and it makes a tone noise.

I haven't played on TubeTone targets, but I am certain it is fun. :)

The catching area is similar to a more conventional basket. There are no spits, no wedgies, and DROTs are nearly impossible. The only problem is fairway aces on windy days where it is hard to hear the tone.
What's not to like about these targets ?

Our club made several of these targets a few years back and used them for temp hole targets in an unsanctioned event. We called them TonePoles, even though it sounded more like a 'clang' when hit by a disc.
The contraption consisted of a 4" diameter aluminum pipe bolted onto a long 2x2, pounded into the ground.
These home made targets got a very mixed reception, so we never used them in tournaments again. Nowadays, they make a fine rose trellis in my backyard (and my old Tri-State platform basket is nearly covered by creeping espalier).

I think I've played one course that had them installed many years ago. The tone was fairly loud, pleasant, and distinctive. It does not help with my normal low putt that hits the pan and drops near the basket. Nothing but air on these, the low putts that miss the chains just sail right past.

A well designed course consisting of nothing other than a stick poked in the ground as a target could be fun. On the other hand I can name you quite a few courses equipped with top of the line baskets that I probably won't play again.
That said, I was introduced to the game of disc golf five years ago on the old Tube Tone course in Yadkinville, NC. I was hooked in the first ten minutes. That either speaks volumes about my addictive personality, or, on the other hand it could mean that the target just doesn't make that much difference.
