I'm looking for people that have been TDs before. After reading the article about the Ice Bowl in the spring issue of Disc Golf World News....I've decided to try and put one together for the players in Buffalo, NY. The problem is....I've never been a TD before and am looking for advice on how to get things started. I know that it is kind of early, but I am thinking it is not early enough.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions about prizes, giveaways, CTPs, crazy ideas, fees....I'll take any advice.

please feel free to respond here, email me at merc7186@yahoo.com, or on my thread on my local site...www.nrdg.net. Thanks

If anyone has any ideas for promotional things to do, I'm listening to them as well......someone emailed me with a CTB (closest to the beer) by placnig a case of beer on a hole, and whoever gets their disc closest, gets the case. Looking for more ideas like that.....

we allways get lunch donated, usually chile, we then serve it for a donation to the charity. So everybody get a tasty hot lunch, and the charity gets more $. do the same thing with donated beer, Ben and jerrys is allways good for an Ice cream donation, so we also serve "cold fudge sundaes" have fun with it....

DRUID HILL ICE BOWL '06-- FREE CRACK AGAIN YO!

we've had a fairly successful cuss jar two years running. it turns more into open donations than anything else. ask each group to tally the potty mouth on the back of the card then charge $1 per violation. often times winners have gone on a torrent of obscenitys and pass along some of their winnings back to charity.

my company matches charitable donations up to $X k per year so i donate through my company and the funds automatically double. if your employer doesn't do that, ask around for someone willing to donate on your behalf that does have a matching contributions program at work.

other local ice bowls have sold mulligans to raise funds as well. you can cap them and/or charge something outrageous for them.

my favorite local ice bowl is the rockburn chili cookoff. if you don't bring chili, it's $2 per bowl. it's a good time.

Aug 02 2005, 12:07 AM
One of the ideas someone tossed me was to make a huge vat of chili and sell it. Thankfully, my A.D. is a professional chef, so that is not a problem. I'll definitely have to do the swear jar, although, that'll cost me big time. Selling mulligans is not a bad idea. I'm also looking for ideas on what divisions other places are using. I was thinking Open, Amateur, and Womens.

One of the things we do here in Austin (an idea which we "borrowed" from the Grapevine TX Ice Bowl many years ago) is 5-5-5 (or 3-3-3). You take some donated merchandise for prizes, put 5 baskets out in a field in an X shape, then charge $5 for 5 throws. Have a pile of merch as ctp prize for each basket. Lots of fun to both play and watch. The number of baskets and/prize piles can be varied based on how much stuff you have to give away.

We did 3-3-3 (3 throws at 3 baskets for $3) for a couple of years until we started getting enough donated items to increase it to 5-5-5 and still have $80-$100 worth of prizes for each basket.

I know that a lot of places have had great success at making their ice bowls a competetive event with payout. However, we have done well going the other route: no payout at all, just for fun.

Make your entry fee enough to cover a shirt or a disc&mini, plus a little extra for misc. expenses (like park rental, staff shirts & food, etc). Then add another component: either a couple of extra dollars or a few cans of food (we have done $2 or 2 cans, but we may increase that in 2006). That way people can either feel good about bringing some food or if they don't want to, or forget, or didn't hear about it, then they just pay the extra cash. Besides, food banks love cash - they can get a lot more food with cash than we can because of the deals they have set up with big grocery stores.

We do one round of 18 holes, or sometimes 21 or 22 holes if we have too many people for just 18. We still sign people up for their divisions, that way they can compare scores at the end, but we mix all the players up so beginners, pros, and everyone in between might play on the same card. The only payout we give is something for first place in each division, and then only if we have enough donated items to do that (like a disc, or a gift certificate or shirt - something small).

Fun, inexpensive, no pressure, great atmosphere. Most people really seem to like it, and it is great for families too.

Thanks for the ideas GordonMK....I think that is a cool idea to do the 5-5-5. We have enough people who have portable baskets to set that up. Plus, we have already gotten a good start on people donating items and are gonna work on local businesses to donate stuff too. My biggest challenge so far is agreeing on a format to run with payoffs. Someone had emailed me and stated that they tried several different ways and ended up staying with a random draw doubles. I'm cool with that and breaking it up into Ams and Open, but my only drawback is finding red tees for the women. The course where we are having it has tee pads from the white tees, but has spray painted brick buried in the ground for the reds. And given the fact that there will probably be at least a foot of snow on the ground, it is gonna be kind of hard to find them.

Someone emailed me and stated that their Ice Bowl does Random Draw Doubles with Stableford Scoring....does anyone else do this?

I wish all PDGA tournaments were run like the annual Ice Bowl tournaments!

1) First and foremost, they are Charity Fundraisers for local food banks. The food donations brought and money raised go towards feeding hungry people in the local area. What's to prevent us from also holding charity fundrasiers along with our tournaments throughout the year?!?

2) Lower Entry Fees. All the Ice Bowls in my area (the Mid-Atlantic region) feature lower entry fees; usually $20-25 for Pros, and $15-$20 for Amateurs. And even though I'm a Pro, I'll usually get a player's package with that, normally a sweet Ice Bowl stamped disc and a mini! Because of the low entry fees, I can play in 4 or 5 Ice Bowls for the cost of one Supertour during the regular year. Ice Bowls don't break anyone's budget like B-tiers and Supertours do.

3) No whimps, no whiners. Whoever invented this was a genius! The official motto of the tournament allows for no complaining. As soon as anyone starts ******** about the cold or how bad their game is (since it's wintertime and they haven't played in a while and they're cold anyway) they get clipped immediately. Players follow this motto religiously in my area - whiners are not tolerated and people abide by the rule. Too bad they make up for it during all the other tournaments during the year!

4) Fewer divisions. Unlike normal PDGA tournys where there are 11 divisions of just a handful of people and everyone and their cousin is a division winner, Ice Bowls usually only feature a Pro, Advanced, and Intermediate division. No Masters division so that old farts aren't subjected to the excruciatingly painful trauma of having to play with young whipper-snippers.

5) Exposure in the media. I rarely read in the newspaper or see a segment on the local TV channel about a Supertour with a $6000 purse, touring Pros and 90 entrants. But I've seen countless articles in newspapers nationwide every year about the 35 freaks who went out and threw a Frisbee around in sub-zero temperatures all day and raised thousands of dollars for charity. I was even interviewed on camera and the segment aired on a local TV station. Ice Bowls get more exposure and promotion for the sport of disc golf than any event year round.

6) Ice Bowls are less competitive. It's wintertime and no one has really been playing all that much anyway. You're all bundled up in layers of fleece and jackets, and you're wearing either heavy boots which screws up your footwork or you're wearing Seal Skins and your feet are freezing. The course is usually in crappy shape, with a foot of snow covering the ground and ice on all the teepads. If the snow is powdery, you can't throw a roller. You can't use white discs because they'll get lost, so you're usually using colored discs which aren't your regular discs and thier flight characteristics are unfamiliar to you. If you're shooting crappy it doesn't matter because you only paid $20 to enter and most of that is going to charity and you got a disc with your entry fee anyway!

6) Alternate formats. Because the Ice Bowl is usually more of a non-formal affair, tournament directors in my area usually try more fun stuff. They stick a basket out on the frozen lake and have people play out to it. They have people purchase $5 mulligans for charity or give them several free ones which they can use during the tourny. They make up safari holes! I've played more safari holes during Ice Bowl tournaments than any other tournament during the year. Safari holes are easy during Ice Bowls. Because of the snow and cold, combining two short holes that wouldn't even be a tough par 3 in warm weather become legitimate pro par four holes. Get a birdie 3 and you gain a stroke on the field.

7) Pot luck lunches. Why do we only do this during Ice Bowls? Nobody has to pack their own lunch, or leave the park during the lunch break to go drive and find an open deli on the weekend (not an easy task sometimes) or pay $6 to some food vendor to bring you a lousy sandwich, chips and a soda. Everybody brings a dish to the Ice Bowl and it's always delicious! You usually always see hot sausage and some kind of soup. There's always several different types of chili, all varying in degrees of hotness, from the mild stuff to the 4-alarm "anus-in-space" variety, with tabasco available if somebody wants to clear the course or just achieve a level of hotness somewhere in between the two extremes. There's always a bevy of deserts, and hot chocolate and cider is usually there to warm up the frozen bodies, too. One guy deep fried a whole turkey a couple of years ago.

8} Other activities. Because it's usually so cold out, there's lots of extra-curricular activities going on, and it's much more widely accepted. Nothing warms you up on a cold morning like a couple of shots of hot rum. Since the tournament is not as competitive, people catch a buzz and just have a fun time. And park rangers are rarely around at that time of year to enforce park rules.

A fun side game that we play in the winter....

get to the bottom of a big hill and set a box on it's side (or piping resembling a small hockey net) and have the players throw up the hill. The disc needs to slide down into the piping or box to win a disc. We call it disc tobbogan.

Huntington WV plays a format where you play singles in the morning, then you're seeded by that score for doubles in the afternoon. Best morning score is partnered with worst, second best with second worst, and so on. I think it's like $10-$15 to play & you get an Ice Bowl shirt. They give out homemade trophies & a few prizes at the end. They have a good time & are always one of the top money raisers (through corporate sponsors & media coverage).

At the end of this post is a listing of the 152 Ice Bowl events that have been registered at Ice Bowl world headquarters as of January 6. Before the schedule, there is some general information about Ice Bowl. Please direct any corrections for the schedule or requests to get on the schedule to rick@discgolfworld.com. And remember, please have fun out there!

What Ice Bowls Are?
Ice Bowls are for all those disc golfers gutsy, crazy, desperate, or fun-loving enough to join together in an act of disc golf solidarity around the world. Regardless of the weather conditions, the idea is to have fun, raise funds and food for local food banks (or other charities), and dispel the gloom of winter.

There are mandatory Ice Bowl Rules:
#1. Under no circumstances, may an Ice Bowl be cancelled or postponed because of weather conditions.
#2. No wimps or whiners are allowed.
#3. There are no excuses for not attending. (Either be there or be a wimp!)

Charity, Disc Golf, Community Networking, and Media Coverage
Ice Bowls and affiliated charitable fundraising events are held within the Ice Bowl corridor of January 7 through February 19. Each organizer determines the format, but low-cost events that emphasize fun and participation for all players are encouraged. The media is more likely to show an interest in disc golf when its done in conjunction with a good cause. The Ice Bowls traditional charitable support has been for local food banks or others who feed the hungry, but all legitimate charitable donations are counted towards the international goal, which is $140K this year. Last years total was over $125,000.
There are several possible benefits raising money for a local charity. Most importantly, it gives a local club an opportunity to integrate itself more fully into the community at large. When seeking out funds for a charity, its possible to make allies who may prove useful when trying to get additional courses into the ground or securing sponsorship for more competitive events

Questions and Answers
Is it too late to hold an Ice Bowl in 2006?
There's still time, but you need to hustle. Contact me at rick@discgolfworld.com or 1-888-237.6884 right away.

We never get any ice where we live. Can we still hold an Ice Bowl?
Absolutely! When we first started promoting the Ice Bowl in 1987, we touted it as a day of disc golf solidarity in the middle of winter. Sunbelt states were encouraged to participate for that reason, and for the irony. Even though the name may not fit the climate, when raising money for a local charity and letting the media know about it, the chances of getting some positive publicity are good. In fact, three of the best fundraising Ice Bowls historically have been in Houston, Texas; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Arlington, Texas.

What have some Ice Bowls done to raise funds?
Getting merchandise donated to the event is a good place to start. Sponsors are more likely to help out when they know that there is a charitable tie-in. Donated merchandise can be turned into cash via an auction, a raffle, or closest-to-the pin contests. If enough stuff is donated, all entry fees can be donated by using the donated merchandise as prizes. Other non-profit groups or even for-profit businesses (Wal-Mart for one) might be willing to match your donations. Selling mulligans during play has been used successfully at many Ice Bowls. Some Ice Bowls offer prizes to those who raise x amount of money. Other Ice Bowls provide pledge sheets to encourage motivated club members to solicit funds directly from individuals and businesses.

How do we have fun or more fun?
As if this is a problem for disc golfers! Anyway, having communal feasts at Ice Bowls has proven very popular, with chili featured most often as the main course. Chili contests are often held. Some Ice Bowls have featured relaxed formats with only a round or a round in a half of golf with nearly half of the field winning something. Try something different! Play the course backwards. Create new tees. Try a new kind of doubles or triples or team golf. (One Ice Bowl tried blindfolded doubles.) Play a RIPT round. Remember, its only January/February and there is a full competitive season still ahead. An Ice Bowl is a great time just to have a whole bunch of fun, to do some good for the world at the same time, and to bring positive PR to disc golf.

How amount media coverage?
Prepare a news release to be distributed at least a week to 10 days before the event. Follow this up with phone calls three to five days before the event. Faxing news releases saves time and money. Another avenue is the public service announcement (PSA). Newspapers and free weekly newspapers often have free calendar listings.

Are Ice Bowls without charitable outreaches allowed?
I respectfully request that if you use the name Ice Bowl in association with your winter tournament that you raise money and/or food for a recognized charity. In other words, please choose another name for your winter event if you are not making a charitable donation.

The first disc golf Ice Bowl was held in January of 1987 at Albert-Oakland Park in Columbia, Missouri. It was an attempt to get some disc golfing activity going in the dead of winter. The Sunday before the Super Bowl was chosen because it was a football-free day, thus getting rid of the "Im watching the game" excuse for not playing. News releases were issued, and on Saturday night before the Ice Bowl, it snowed five inches. The results were good as both 34 people and the media showed up. There was a picture in the sports section of the Monday edition of the Columbia Daily Tribunedisc golf in Columbia got some free publicity.

This first Ice Bowl was mentioned in the debut issue of Disc Golf World News (March, 1987), and since then, it has been promoted by DGWN and Disc Golf World. The initial idea was to have everyone playing on the same day as an act of disc golf solidarity in the dead of winter. Sun belt states were encouraged to participate for this reason and because of the irony. Because some cities preferred holding their Ice Bowls on different weekends or on Saturdays and as we discovered that people were willing to travel for some disc golfing fun, even in January, we adopted the official "Ice Bowl Corridor" for the 2001 Ice Bowl.

In 1993, Ice Bowl merchandise was introduced for the first time, and prizes for attendance, media coverage, photos, etc. were awarded. In 1994, the Indianapolis Disc Golf Club introduced the idea of collecting food and raising money for its local food bank. In 1996, fundraising for local food banks was made an important component of Ice Bowl, and disc golfers responded by providing over 5,500 meals. In 1996, we set a modest goal of providing 10,000 meals, and ended up with nearly 59,500 meals. In 1998, the goal was a still-modest 100,000 meals and we provided over 145,000 meals. In 1999 we raised the bar quite high300,000 mealsfiguring it was better to have a lofty goal even if it took more than one year to reach it. We did well in 1999, providing 207,250 meals. In 2000, the goal remained the same, and we still came in short with 284,928 meals. In 2001, the goal was 330,000 meals and we raised the equivalent of 317,000 meals.

Due, in part to 9/11, but also because several Ice Bowl TDs had previously chosen to support other worthy causes (Red Cross, Unicef, Meals on Wheels, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc.), in 2002 we changed our worldwide charitable goal to dollars and counted donations to all legitimate charities. The goal of $51,000 was easily exceeded by over $14K. The goal in both 2003 and 2004 was $75,000 in cash, and we came close in 2003, and exceeded our target by over $11,000 in 2004. Lasts year goal of $100K was easily surpassed by over $28K. The goal for 2006 is $140K.
