Imagine if you will. Your friend has finally decided to take your advice and start playing disc golf. He is a 6', 230lb, 27 year old male. Initially he goes through a phase of ignoring all your suggestions and buying tons of discs, just to find out that he has no idea what they do or how to control them. Finally, in a humble moment your friend comes to you and begs for your help. He wants to know what would be the best three or four discs he could use to learn with. You know he has read everything on www.discgolfreview.com (http://www.discgolfreview.com) about disc selection and is looking for something just a little more specific as far as your personal suggestion of exact disc type, plastic and weight. What will you tell this friend?

Asimo :)

ps thanks for all the help

sounds like a big dude.

I"d suggest:
1x DX Aviar 175
1x DX/Pro Roc or Z-buzzz (max weights. 180 for roc and 178 for buzzz)
1x CHampion Teebird (probalby max)
1x Champion Firebird or monster(probabaly max)

The weight will depend on how fast he throws and how much spin he can put on a disc.. with that size i'm sure he can get something on the disc so something in the 170s for any disc (high 170s for midrange) would probably do.

166 gram archangel (so underrated as a beginner disc)
172 gram stratus
170 gram Aviar Putt n Approach

When I finally ventured past having a 1 disc game, I started with an X2, a stratus, and an Aviar. The X2 might have been a little too advanced for me, but I came around to it.

The archangel just seems to be a great stable to understable driver for weaker arms and it seems to be forgiving of the people with inconsistant form.

I was in the same position about 2 weeks ago so I will help you out:

Drivers: Champion Sidewinder and Discraft XS
Midrange: Champion Coyote (Very newbie friendly) and a Champion Panther (for easy to learn Anhyzers)
Putter: DX Aviar

Man, this is probably a very biased crowd. I've been playing for a while, I'm 6'1" 240 lbs. so I'll give you my list.

XL Pro D 169 gram. Leopard would fit here to
My first disc, flew sweet (Sidewinder took there place)

Classic Roc 172 gram
Not the farthest but I love mine

Rhyno DX 174 gram
Good in the wind, I've sync one from 50 ft. with it

Flash or Orc 165-175 gram
Just a flex disc. Something to just rip for distance to see how far you can throw.

I would second this motion. 1 wide rimmed driver (orc/beast), 1 fairway driver (eagle/teebird), 1 midrange (wasp/buzz), putter (whatever feels comfortable, I like the rhyno though)

Yeah it is a biased crowd when you start talking about brands with discers around here. You can always count on the gateway plug from a few people around here too :D

He asked, and I responded :D. You gotta admit though, the Wizard and the Element are SUPER begginer friendly...not to say Leopards and XSs aren't, I was just suggesting what I started my buddies with.

There is NO reason to leave a spot in a beginner bag for a "Wide Rimmed" Disc... They are Quite unpredictable compared to regular Long distance drivers and They won't make a difference for anyone learning to throw. NO reason to leave a spot for something that is hard to control. I'd rather see a newer player have a spot for an overstable disc like a firebird/monster(which i know is wide rimmed, but not normally used for driving) so they can learn to throw forehands and have a good utility disc.

I don't even throw any widerimmed discs except the monster and that's becuase i prefer it over the firebird. I don't use it to drive normal holes. I use it for Big Hyzer shots and any utility shot it's needed for. I'd rather see somoene learn to throw a slower disc like a teebird first and they would probably get the same distance, but more control with it..

Just my opinion as i started PLaying the game with all champion stuff(beast/monster/ etc) and it ruined my game. I could throw over 450 within 2months, but i coudn't control short shots and now i'm working on relearning how to throw.

Just my Two Hundreths of a Dollar.

If he is a 'real' beginner..... Lightweight discs. Bag? Plastic Bag will do. Understable to stable will do just fine.

160 something Valk.

160 something Buzzz

160 something JK Aviar

I only thew in a wide rimmed disc b/c around here, a lot of newbies like expiriment with some forehand.

I give them a Glide or a Shark.
One disc, no bag.

I would have to agree with this setup. It might be tough to find these specific discs used, but DX will beat up in a hurry, and none are rally considered overstable. It can be frustrating for a newbie to watch everything fade hard on every throw.

I'm a 64 year old male. I just started golfing two months ago. I purchased a small PDGA bag. My beginner discs:
166g Archangel, a very easy driver to throw. :)
170g Champion Shark, good multipurpose disc. :)
Aviar-X JK Pro, great putt and approach. :) :)
These were recommended for a beginning golfer.
I threw these exclusively for almost a month, then I wanted to try higher performing discs so I bought a 167g Pro Starfire. My Archangel was a better choice to throw at that time, I couldn't get the Starfire to go as far as the Archangel.
I was recommended to get a Sidewinder. I bought a 161g and again at first I couldn't get the distance that the Archangel did. Now a month later it is my main driver. :)
At La Mirada, I was recommended a good midrange driver, a 166g JLS, very easy to throw. I throw the JLS alot. :)
Finally I have a 166g Champion Valkerie, probably the most unpredictable disc in my bag. :(
I'm still trying hard to increase my distance, but I think that will really come from practice and technique rather than the latest disc.
Good Luck!

there isn't a perfect beginner bag, what a beginner would find most useful is playing with better players and playing alot. thats how you improve. some people put way too much stock in certain discs....if you guys all had the exact same discs as climo you wouldn't be rated 1033 like him, he doesn't throw only first run ce plastic discs, you guys would probably be surprised to see that he throws normal stuff you can buy from any disc golf shop...it seems like if some people that chat on here about discs would spend that time putting i'll bet your rating would go up by atleast 20 pts.

My daughter gets her best distance with a 145 DX Eagle. I have my basket in my garage where I also have my computer so, I can putt and post simultaneously.
(Wooo, a six syllable word) Did I spell that correctly?

You really didn't get the point of this at all. Beginners have a huge problem. They throw discs that were made for advanced players. They throw Orcs, Wraiths, Crushes, etc.... and they learn to throw them, the wrong way. If they learned to throw Rocs and Cyclones (or whatever), they could learn to throw efficiently. A fast, overstable disc masks bad form. Slow, straight discs don't.

Yes, it would be great if beginners played and learned from the course pro, but that is pretty rare.

Beginners should throw beginner discs. It will help them learn faster.

Our course pro, and disc vendor lives by this. He is a wonderful person and actually one of the best all around players that has ever lived (PDGA#33). His prices are comparable nationwide, but you can go to Academy and get the discs for a buck cheaper, but with every purchase he helps select the right disc and weight based on what the person wants to do, and after seeing them throw. He also gives small technique tips to anyone who listens.

But once players reach the advanced level, they find that buying from him is no longer very applicable. Most of the stock he carries is lighter weights, and less stable. He is about supporting the beginners and up coming players.

There are some people here who think he should stop catering to beginners so they can buy from him. This is selfish in my opinion. And without course pros like him the talent pool of this game would dry up because no one will be able to throw a straight shot without the aide of a chewed up Eagle that is beat beyond recognition.

There needs to be more pros and vendors who step up to his level at least on the "at course" level to promote our beginners. Advanced players and pros have more options for advice and disc selection because they have been around long enough to know what they want, and where to get it.

Ideal beginner bag....

Quoting Dave Dunipace (Innova): The Aero is the best begginer disc we have

he also mentioned he is surprised it isn't a bigger seller. if you kow someone you'd like to turn on to disc golf -- the Aero would be a good 'one disc' to have (and it's now available in Star plastic too).

I typically offer 3 discs for $20. Putter(soft apx, soft magnet), approach(stratus, buzzz) and driver(XL, Xpress). What a bargain.
