I took a road trip to Cincinnati this weekend to play some disc golf. I hit up five different courses in two days - Mt Airy, Burnett Woods, Boone Woods, Idlewild and Banklick.

Burnett Woods is on U. of Cincinnati's campus. Nothing much to say about this one. Most of the holes were fairly open, with several trees in the fairway. The course was very well manicured. Boone Woods was a decent course, but not very challenging. The average hole was about 250 feet, and the course played over a valley and through some trees. It was a fun course, but the kind of course you could play entire with a putter.

The course that I was really looking forward to was Idlewild. I wanted to see if it was as hard and as good as everyone made it out to be. After playing all I 18 I must say.. it is tough. However, I got more birdies (4) at Idlewild than I did at any other course I played. Strange, but true. I was actually playing very well that day. I was shooting +6 going into hole 15. I took a triple bogey on 15, a bogey on 16, par at 17 and had another triple on hole 18. So, I went from a +6 to a +13 in the final four holes. Still, I was very happy with my score (67). Idlewild is a beautiful and challenging course, but I thought some of the holes were kind of ridiculous. Hole 5 and hole 18 come to mind. I don't see how anyone could make a 3 on hole 5.

Mt Airy was a very nice course too. I played the course with a couple locals who helped me find my way around. I learned one thing about Mt Airy - stay out of the rough. Anything not in the fairway will make for a very tough second shot. Another thing I noticed about Mt Airy is that most of the shots seemed to be big hyzer shots - I didn't get to use my sidearm much at all, although I found a few good holes for a roller. I think I shot +10 at Mt Airy, but I had a great time playing the course and would like to play it again.

Banklick was AWESOME. Wow! Why don't more people talk about this course? IMO, this course it waaaaay better than Idlewild. 24 Holes on a beautiful park and a ton of variety. The scenery was amazing as well, especially the holes down by the creek bed. The front nine plays relatively easy and short, with several nice wooded holes. The back nine (or 15 in this case) was nothing short of amazing. One of the holes that sticks out in my mind is a downhill shot where you are throwing down a 45 degree slope and the basket is on the edge of a drop off. I threw my putter, but it caught a tree root and took a roll down to the bottom of the hill - not very easy to park this hole. The best hole on the course had to be hole #24. It is 519 feet to the pin, and you are standing about 70 feet above pin height throwing over trees, and a lake on the left - it is the coolest looking golf shot I have ever seen. There was a left to right wind when I was playing this hole. I took a beat up proline beast and crushed it with some anhyzer and it carried in the wind forever. When I walked down the hill I was amazed to see that I was only 40 feet from the pin. I finished out the course at +7, but it felt like the round of my life. Overall, there is nothing negative I can say about Banklick. I loved the course, and the challenge it presented. This has to be the best course I have ever played, and I plan on making the drive back to play it again soon. Bancklick rocks!

Hole five is a par 5. It can be 3ed by throwing over the top and landing up in the second landing area. Sounds like you played the shorts. I'd guess your 2's came on holes 4, 9, and 2 of 12-14. Playing the longs will take away deuce opportunities on 13 & 14. Many people have the same reaction the first time they play Idlewild. Once you're able to call a 6 on hole 18 a bogey & a 5 on 6 a par, I'm sure you will see the light. ;)

Banklick is a sweet course and gets a ton of play. There was a poll done on cincinnatidiscgolf.com about favorite area courses. 10 courses were listed, and 31% of 192 people picked Banklick as their fav.

Come on back up any time. If you played 5 courses, you've only got about 20 more to go! :) We've had two courses literally pop up out of nowhere this year. If you're here more than a day you'll likely see a new course go in.

Dude, I played Banklick with my brother about a year ago...All I can say is WOW also, man. That course is my favorite course I've played by far.

Let me ask you this...did you enjoy the drive to Independence, Kentucky?? I personally thought it was a real pain in the rear to get there, but it was well worth it.

Hole 1 is great!!

The drive to Independence wasn't that bad, but then again I am from Kentucky so I am used to driving on country roads. It wasn't that far off of I-75.. maybe 8 or 9 miles.

I have got to return and play Banklick again. I am thinking of just camping out one weekend and playing that course over and over. Idlewild was cool too, but it just didn't appeal to me as much as banklick. There were some really kick @$$ holes at idlewild, but then there were some that I just didn't care for at all. Idlewild will probably still make it into my top 5 just because of the beautiful scenery and the challenge it presents.

Idlewild was designed specificly to challenge top pros so most amateurs are going to prefer a course like Banklick. The Cinci area is blessed with around 20 courses so it was time to create a course specificly designed to challenge the very best -- an 18 hole par 72 course, and course pro Fred Salaz and company delivered. I'm not a top pro by any stretch of the imagination, but it's my favorite course and hooked me on disc golf. If you want a challenge this is the course for you.

Hey I'd like to get in a camping/DiscGolf vacation yet this year...
So did Sidearmed do his homework on the Cincy area... are these courses generally everyone's pick of the Top 5 courses in the Cincy area...(what the heck... how about order of preference #1 down) or would someone kick out one of these in place of another... I'll be travelling from the North, so anything North of Cincy could be included as well. Anything South of Dayton... I've scoped out the Dayton permanent DGC's. Belmont is way cool...
Maybe NEngle could help me out...
What about campground's too... just to pitch a tent is all... looking at state parks unless theres something else. That and catfishing on the Ohio River, any catFishin' DGer's out there??
Thanks.

Coming from the north of Cincinnati, I'd start at Harbin Park in Fairfield, then work my way down to Winton Woods (for historical purposes only) then to Mount Airy Forest. Then head over the river for Idlewild and Boone Woods. From there, Banklick Woods and Pride Park would be my last destinations.

Of those courses, I played most of them about 4 years ago. I'd rank them this way in order of "must play"...
1)Mt. Airy
2)Idlewild
3)Banklick
4)Harbin

The rest I either haven't played (Pride...heard good things once upon a time) or they are courses that I enjoyed but wouldn't go out of my way to squeeze in on a road trip (Winton & Boone).

Enjoy.

Thanks for putting Cincinnati on the map for me Josh... the don't miss advice helps, in case I don't have time to play them all in a weekend trip. I'll be sure and list your recommendation's on my little side project map page.
You don't happen to know which courses were played during the past Pro World's tournament's in '88 & 98 in Cincinnati do you?
You might have to talk to an old hippy or something...lol.
I think I'm going to need to get w/ a PDGA rep to see if they've got records of those... it'ld be interesting to see how past world's courses rate by today's standards. The course rating PDGA thing's gonna be awesome, if they are planning to rate all courses sooner or later, I think they need help on that. There's a detailed form of spec's they are using.

I just played that course. Misting and wet. But....I 100% concur with you. I have played well over 100 courses and this is the best course I have ever played! I cannot imagine how awesome it must be in the summer. Almost all the holes are very well designed with great righty/lefty balance in the punishment and difficulty department. I wish I was in the area more often.

here is a link to the thread that has some good pic.s of Idlewild posted in it:

Idlewild thread (http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=488229&page=0&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=21&fpart=1&vc=1)

another course in this area i like but have yet to hear mentioned is AJ Jolly. It has some long holes but unlike Idlewild most are not very wooded. There are also some water holes there, and the course is quite scenic. On a line Idlewild is west near the airport, Banklick is in the middle and AJ Jolly is east. If i was coming from the north, i might start at Mt. Airy, take 275 to Idlewild, then play Banklick, then head to AJ Jolly. That would be one full day and my arm would probably be tired. another option might be to do two of the above 4 one day and the other 2 the next...

Or, if you come to the Disc 'n Dat Bluegrass Open (http://www.pdga.com/schedule/event.php?TournID=5500) in May 2006 you can play Idlewild and Banklick in a tournament (A tier).

If you are Masters age, there is the Masters at Idlewild (http://www.pdga.com/schedule/event.php?TournID=5617) tournament the second weekend in June 2006 (XB tier)

or there is always the Flying Pig Open at Mt. Airy and Harbin parks during the last weekend of August... (B tier)
