Dear High Country Disc Golfers & Supporters,
(Please bare with me on this one, there is a lot to talk about!)
For the past several years now, we've all shared the same dream, of having a local disc golf course right here in our community, in the beautiful mountains of Northwest North Carolina. Well, I'm very pleased and proud to inform you all, that the good news has finally arrived. It's now officially, official! Ashe County Park's and Rec has agreed to allow and help support the establishment of an 18 hole disc golf course (Big thanks to Joe Boccardy, the director of Ashe Co. Park, and Aaron Kolbow, Ashe County's athletics director, for their desire and willingness to make it all happen). Like I said before, it's been a long time now since this High Country region has represented the sport. Back in the late 80's, early 90's, there used to be a privately owned course outside of Laurel Springs, that drew disc golfer's from all over the U.S., boasting one of the best tournaments of it's time. Unfortunately, the Boylan family farm/disc golf course was sold, so it ceased to exist, and only good memories and stories remain!
History shall repeat itself! Patience and persistence pays off because this Ashe County course appears to have all the ingredients necessary to make for one of the best disc golf courses in all of Western NC, possibly even the state. For those of you that aren't familiar with Ashe County Park, it's located within a few miles north of the Jefferson's, in the far northwest corner of NC. (only 30 mins. from Boone). This beautiful 70 acre park has stunning long range views, good elevation changes, well manicured fields with mature trees, woods, trails, a water hazard (pond), pavilions, bathhouses, and much, much more! For more information on the park itself, go to www.ashecountygov.com/ParksandRec/index.htm. (http://www.ashecountygov.com/ParksandRec/index.htm.) It's literally the perfect place for a great disc golf course! Where summertime temperatures rarely exceed 82 degrees, and charity Ice Bowl events promise to define/emphasize, No Wimps or Whiners!
Since proper planning is essential to accommodate future growth and the overall desires/skills of everyone, from beginner to pro levels, we've asked and hired, Innova's own, Mr. Harold Duvall for his design expertise. Harold has a very impressive resume with over 20 yrs. experience! Not only is he one of the sports top promoters overseeing Innova's East coast office in Rock Hill, SC, he's also designed more than 20 courses, including the famous Winthrop Gold course, home of the U.S. Disc Golf Championship. Not to mention, he is also a former 2-time World Champion! So obviously, this course will be fitted with Innova disc catcher targets/baskets. Innova is the world leader in the production of disc golf products, and is overall #1 in the sport. If that's not a good enough reason why Innova and Mr. Duvall were chosen for this course/project, we also wanted to avoid personal conflicts of interest/ego's getting involved (this will be a course for everyone), they're giving us a good deal, and most importantly, it's what's BEST for the community!
The design process is set to begin sometime mid-August, with a roughed in completion date a few months later, depending on how much help we get. Which brings us to the immediate formation/organization of the very informal, High Country Disc Golf Club. Can I get a second vote on that? This will be an equal opportunity, voluntary, free membership (at this time) for those of you interested, and also the best way I know of to address and keep posted all of the supporters, helpers, players, etc. So, if you want to contribute, participate, sponsor, donate, volunteer, suggest, or just play, please let me know, and consider yourself an honorary member of the High Country Disc Golf Club. Please don't expect a whole lot in return (again, at this time), afterall this is a free membership, but do expect annoying and harassing phone calls and emails with updates, letting you know of the financial support we need and the numerous work parties to come!
We still have a long drive ahead of us before we can putt, so here are some of the facts, figures, and numbers I think you should all know about. Like it or not!
-Professional design (long and short tees), baskets and sleeves, installation, promotions, etc. will cost $7,500. **Ashe County Parks and Rec. has agreed an allowance of $3,000 + some labor, future concrete pad help (after establishment approval), and a kiosk designated for the course and club to use.
-That leaves us with a deficit of $4,500, not to mention the famous, and very affordable "Brent Peterson" signs - recycled, low cost and aesthetically pleasing, wood benches, trashcans?, promotions, future concrete pads, etc.
Not to worry, even though this course is actually in financial debt at this time, Innova has agreed to provide us with a very friendly payback loan, basically stating that we pay them back the remainder A.S.A.P.! This kind gesture allows progress to continue moving forward and also enables our club the opportunity and responsibility to host fundraising events if needed for the reimbursement. This option is worst case scenario. What we'd really like and hope to do, is find sponsors for each hole to make up that difference!
Let me reiterate that, WE NEED SPONSORS AND/OR DONATIONS! The cost of sponsoring a hole is only going to be $350 per hole, and will be on a first come, first serve basis, you pick the undiscovered hole! For the generous contribution, the sponsor will receive his or her name or business name/logo, advertised on the granted hole tee sign, on the back of the score cards, on the course kiosk board, and possibly even local news media coverage. These benefits will cover a 2 yr. period upon completion and the sponsor will have the option for renewal after that as well. What a deal!
If we can accomplish the this goal of 18 sponsors @ $350 per hole, we've just chinged $6,300! This would allow us to payback the remainder owed, and give us a surplus of $1,800 to vote upon which luxuries we want for the course/club on down the fairway! Sounds good huh? Well, it's going to be!
So, who's in? If your interested in any way, whether it's just to become a member of the High Country Disc Golf Club, sponsor a hole, make a donation, or just plain curious, please send me your info. (name, address, phone numbers, email, PDGA #, resources, etc.) Also, please feel free to pass this message along. In fact, do it! The more people that know about it, the better!
It's time to put Ashe County Park on the map and in the PDGA course directory!
Sincerely,
Todd & Wendy Patoprsty

If there's going to be a course, there has to be a clubhouse! We're closing on a house up there Aug. 17th, and plan on moving as soon as we sell our house in Boone. I hate to move away from Boone's first 9 hole UFO sponsored private course, but we're talking about following bigger dreams here! This course has so much potential, future summer series A-tier baby! The High Country Disc Golf Club/Course shall represent!
Hickory rocks though! Don't count me out, I plan to be a lifetime member. I'll always do what I can, which hasn't been much, but I'm trying. You guys (the UFO club) do a great job with everything! looking forward to the Classic!
Any and all help will be truely appreciated!

NEW ASHE CO. PARK 18 HOLE DISC GOLF COURSE /
HIGH COUNTRY DISC GOLF CLUB UPDATE!
So far, the response, interest, and willingness to help has been very exciting and positive. It appears that when the time comes to get the job done, the support will be there. At the moment, we're still just in the promotional stages, trying to get the word out and searching for committed hole sponsors/financial help.
Here is the list of current members of the High Country Disc Golf Club.......
Let me start with our honorary members, those of you that have committed to sponsoring a hole(s). We have four of them thus far, with many more in the works.
Hole's #1 and #18 were the first to go (not a surprise there), and we owe a BIG THANKS to Mel and Cara Jone's (with over 100 courses played), of Blowing Rock, NC. for their generous contribution and overall love for the game. (828) 265-0264, or mjon219es@charter.net
Hole #10 will be sponsored by Rick Rothstein, who's work with the Disc Golf World News magazine makes this one extra special, quite an honor to say the least. The Disc Golf World News Rocks! Pick up and enjoy a copy today! call - (816) 471- 3472, (888) 237-6884, or www.discgolfworld.com (http://www.discgolfworld.com), rick@discgolfworld.com
Our last hole sponsor has yet to be determined hole wise, because this guy deserves a pad more visible to the public eye. He's Mr. Lee J Ball, of Boone, NC., and his business is Rocking Bear Stone Works. Lee J plans to do some very cool stonework on or around his sponsored hole that will add a very special touch/appearance to the establishment of the course for years to come. You rock too, literally! Interested in getting some stone work done? He's the man! Call - (828)264-3111 home/(828)719-6126 cell, or booneballs@yahoo.com
Thank you all for your support! We truly appreciate it!

These are the folks that have directly expressed interest in the course/club. If your not on the list and want to be, let me know. Since this "club" is very informal at the moment, having no club fees or no real organization, it's kind of hard for me to determine who wants to be in the "club" or just informed with what's going on about the course. So, to make things easier, I'm including everybody as in the club! Please don't be freaked out by this, and if you are, just let me know and I'll take you off the list, and put you on another, of unnamed interest only supporters to just receive emails.
Course design is unofficially set to begin sometime mid to late August. After that we must patiently wait for the final park approval, with our first workday/club meeting soon to follow.
Don't forget, we need hole sponsors! $350 per hole for two years, what a deal! Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, resources, or suggestions? Any and all help will be gratefully appreciated! I'll keep you posted!

ASHE CO. PARK 18 HOLE DISC GOLF COURSE / HIGH COUNTRY DISC GOLF CLUB UPDATE #2!
More good news!
We have a couple of new hole sponsors to be thankful for! This makes 6 total so far, with only 12 more to go! I know, I'm quite the mathematician.
The High Country Disc Golf Club welcomes it's newest honorary members.....
Our 5th hole sponsor desires a hole with the ultimate elevation change, so the hole # has yet to be determined. These guys are doing a great job promoting and representing disc golf in the southern to middle Appalachian's of western North Carolina. With all that their doing, it's kind of hard to believe that their wiliness to help would be so unselfish-like. These guys are also are neighbor's and I positively foresee, future allies of ours. Hopefully, we can become partners with them, in what they have established as the Western North Carolina Disc Golf Club, or the WNCDGC. Urban golf in West Jefferson, hummm? Thanks James, for the doing the leg work for the sponsorship! For more information on the WNCDGC and the existing area courses, goto www.wncdiscgolf.com (http://www.wncdiscgolf.com) or contact, James Nichols @ (828) 296-8775
Our 6th hole sponsor is a local Boonie, Mr. Tom Owens. He's one of the first guys to ever respond to may plea for disc golf in our community. Not surprisingly, he had taking on the task himself before. He also remembers the old Laurel Springs course, and has played with the best of them. Now-a-days he owns and operates The Gallery Woodworking Company, in Boone, NC., which will be the actually sponsor for his hole, not yet determined. If we're lucky and we cheer him on enough, he might make us a [I'm a potty-mouth!] bench at his sponsored hole. We appreciate all your hardwork, and thank you for your generous contribution to the course. For all your woodworking needs, call (828) 773-7172, or (828) 297-6762.
We also have one new member.......
Adam, aaddaamm5@hotmail.com
This course is truly turning into a very special mountain course for all to enjoy. That's our mission!
These sponsors are the heroes! The few that are willing to give alittle, inorder to make a big difference. Come on folks, get off your asses and sponsor a hole! Water front property is still available!
Should be late this month before the design process starts. I'll keep you posted!

Dan had an idea! All the work that the UFO Club does for the USDGC can be for the new course in Boone. But this is up to the UFO club. Last year The Hickory UFO Club handled all the parking duties at the USDGC and in return they got new coated tops that look great. Dan's idea for this year is to work at the USDGC to pay for two of the baskets at the new course in Boone. I spoke with Harold and Jonthan and they agreed with this arrangement. This is a decision that needs to be made by the UFO Club. If the Club is interested, please let me know during the Hickory Classic.

I like the idea, but that may be asking for a lot.
I'd be happy with one hole! Maybe 3, but not 2!
You guys in Hickory are too generous, some of you? Spend some of that hard earned money on yourselves, you guys deserve it! Anything would be gratefully appreciated though.
We might have sponsor's 7, 8, 9, and 10 soon! Jeffery Walker's attorney's office, Boone, NC.; Black Cat Burrito, Boone, NC.; Map Realty, Boone, NC.; and Boone take-out, Boone, NC. I hope I'm not speaking to soon.
Hurry, Hurry, Hurry, get em while they last! Help support the ASHE CO. PARK DISC GOLF COURSE, and sponsor a hole in the beautiful mountains of NW, North Carolina! Only $350 per hole for 2 yrs. worth of advertising and bragging rights, what a deal! Call the neighbor's and wake the kids!

ASHE CO. PARK 18 HOLE DISC GOLF COURSE / HIGH COUNTRY DISC GOLF CLUB UPDATE #3!
We have another hole sponsor to be thankful for and happy about! This makes 7 total so far!
Long time Disc Golfer, Trey Morrison of Boone, and/or one of his several successful Boone based businesses (probably either BlackCat Burrito's or Map Realty) will be the sponsor of one of the few water holes on the course! Goes to show that this guy knows a prime piece of real estate when he see's one, both on the course and off! So, if your looking to move closer to the course, then give him a call at Map Realty, (828) 262-5655 office, (828)773-6769 cell, or email, treymorrison@bellsouth.net. Or, maybe you can catch up with him over at Black Cat Burrito, off Depot St., downtown Boone. Very cool place, with very tasty/[I'm a potty-mouth!] burrito's and mouth watering/thirst quenching beer's! Black Cat's # is (828)263-9511. Thanks for the sponsorship Trey, and welcome to the club!
Other new members include.....

-Joe Sirlin, of Boone, NC.

I just thought of something really cool!
This course may be the highest elevation course on the East Coast? At 3,000+ft.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If so, that's what I call marketablity! Definitely, something to brag about!
Can anybody challenge that, or know how to do the research? Maybe I'll start a new thread?
This great little fun fact is just one more reason to sponsor a hole on this beautiful upcoming mountain course!
You East Coast people are elevation challenged if all your courses are under 3000 feet!!! I have only played in two places below that! Northern Idaho, and Portland, OR.
How come there are so many hill billies with so few hills out there?

ASHE CO. PARK 18 HOLE DISC GOLF COURSE / HIGH COUNTRY DISC GOLF CLUB UPDATE #5!
What else, other than some more good news!
First off, we have three more hole sponsors, making that lucky #8, 9, and 10!
Lucky #8 happens to be the kind-hearted Powell family, of Hickory, NC., who's love for the game, can be seen and very much appreciated at numerous disc golf events across the southeast year after year. Thank you for all that you do, and the support! This past Labor Day weekend at the Hickory Disc Golf Classic, Jason Powell, one of the sons, had a little bit more on his mind then just disc golf! Jason actually lives and teaches on the Westside of New Orleans, so his normal yearly visit home to participate in the Classic was a little bit different this time to say the least. Now there's a good excuse for missing a putt! At the time, he knew nothing, but was feeling confident that his 2nd. story apartment avoided any flood damage. The looting is what he was really worried about, along with friends, and the entire gulf coast region in general. He was scheduled to go back to New Orleans earlier this week, so let's all hope and pray for his health and well being! For that matter, we should extend our blessings amongst everyone directly effected by this catastrophic storm! God bless them all!
Our 9th hole sponsor, is personally one of my favorite places to eat and drink a few tasty cold ones in the High Country, the Mellow Mushroom, of Boone, NC. This place has a very casually cool, family friendly atmosphere with a nice outside deck to enjoy the beautiful summer days and/or nights. The beer is great, and they have good food too! Pizza, calzones, hoagies, just to name a few! They're located off River St., in Boone, so be sure to stop by after a long day at the course! I believe they also offer pick up if you're too tired to handle all the fun, (828) 262-9801. Thanks to the Boone Mellow Mushroom's owner Bill Mink for the support, and being so generous all the time!
Putting us into the double digit's, at #10! The Dr. Pepper Bottling Co./distribution center, in West Jefferson, NC. is 99% sure that there going to be able to help support the course, with their disc catchy, "Do the Dew" campaign. "Wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too", or atleast have one, when your score is bringing you down? The Dr. Pepper Bottling Co./distribution center has been filling and capping glass bottles for over 30 something products for a very long time now! It's quite an interesting place, but unfortunately due to the liability involved these days, they had to stop offering tours to the public. It's hard to beat drinking a ice cold Mountain Dew out of a glass bottle! It's actually pretty rare to find or drink a soft drink out of a glass bottle these days. Support those who support you! Thanks Mr. Vonnoy!
We still have 8 more hole sponsorship opportunities! If you really want to sponsor a hole ($350 for 2yrs), and I know a lot of you say you do? I suggest you get on your horse, because snoozer's lose! We're talking about thousands of people potentially seeing your ad's! Even if you live in Alaska, it's a pretty good deal.
Some of you local High Country Folks might have already seen it, but there's an article about the course this week (came out on Thursday) in the High Country News. Sam did a great job on the article, but I really should of giving him some better pictures to work with. I'm not sure the shirtless and shoeless dude from the Greek games on the cover is giving us a good rep. Ha, Ha.
I talked with Harold yesterday, and he's hoping to get up here definitely within the next two weeks. The way it looks at the moment, we should have at least 9 hole's in (mainly in the open section's/less labor area's of the park) by the end of Fall. Harold's really excited about this course, and let me tell you, it's going to be well worth the wait! He wants to wait on the wooded holes/sections of the park until the leaves fall, making it easier to see slopes, trees, and the terrain. This will help minimize tree removal, and erosion, and simply give a better sense of depth perception. Our goal is to have all 18 basket's in by 2006! It's going to be a celebration!
Harold,
People are getting jumpy up here, I don't know how long I can hold them back!
I'd like to take a second to thank Dr. Eric Frauman, longtime ultimate player/disc golfer, for his interest and support in the course. Lucky for us, he has the responsibility of overseeing the ASU Trail Crew, which does an exceptionally fantastic job! It's all about promoting community! The ASU Trail Crew, 100+ strong men and women have put us on their list to offer help and support with the trail system throughout the course. I have a feeling a lot of these guys and girls are going to turn into disc golfers! GO TEAM ASU! Seriously, there is a Western NC Disc Golf College Challenge. We'll talk more about that later.
Have I mentioned yet that I think this Ashe Co. Park 18 Hole Disc Golf Course might just be the highest disc golf course on the East coast! At least until Boone steps up to teepad!
We have some new High Country Disc Golf Club members..........

Ashe Co. Park 18 Hole Disc Golf Course / High Country Disc Golf Club UPDATE #6!
With only 2 weeks away from the 2005 United States Disc Golf Championship, not surprisingly, our course designer and USDGC host, Harold Duvall is still overwhelmed with all the responsibilities at work and home and has asked for your patience and understanding for a few more weeks before starting the Ashe Co. Park course project. Harold is truly sorry for the delays, and promises to get up here as soon as he possibly can. He's very excited about all the course potential and support, and is looking forward to making this course, a GREAT one!
For those of you that may have forgotten, Harold Duvall has over 20 years experience in the sport, and is a former 2-time DISCGOLF World Champion. He now lives in Rock Hill, SC. with his family, and works as the Head Honcho at Innova Disc Golf, one of the biggest and best names in the sport! He also has designed over 20 courses, including the famous, Winthrop Gold Course, home of the USDGC annually. I've already mentioned that he hosts this major tournament as well, and should likely some day be honored in the Disc Golf Hall of Fame in Augusta, GA. for his life long contributions to the sport. So, it's easy to see why we've asked Harold to help us out with the Ashe Co. Park course design/project. It's what's best for the community! Disc golf is about to take over the High Country!
Keeping it all together til then, let's do a little member/sponsor review!
Below is a complete, up to date member's list and sponsorship list.
If you're not on this list, and/or want or don't want to be, just let me know! Remember, this is also a free club membership (at this time), so EVERYONE is considered a member (at this time).

Sponsorship review!
Here is a list of our committed hole sponsors! We presently have 11 of them! Our goal is 18! Some folks have already chosen a hole, others have expressed a particular type of hole. We will do our best to make sure that all of our sponsors are happy! Thanks again to all of you for your support! (To make it easier for me, I'm just going to paste what I've already written about each of them)
Sponsors #1 and #2!
Hole's #1 and #18 were the first to go (not a surprise there), and we owe a BIG THANKS to Mel and Cara Jone's (with over 100 courses played), of Blowing Rock, NC. for their generous contribution and overall love for the game. (828) 295-0264, or mjon219es@charter.net
Sponsor #3!
Sponsor #4!
This particular sponsor has yet to be determined hole wise, because this guy deserves a pad more visible to the public eye.
Sponsor #5!
Sponsor #6!
For all your woodworking needs, call (828) 773-7172, or (828) 297-6762., burritodude@hotmail.com
Sponsor #7!
So, if your looking to move closer to the course, then give him a call at Map Realty, (828) 262-5655 office, or (828)773-6769 cell, or email him at TreyMorrison@bellsouth.net Or maybe you can catch up with him over at Black Cat Burrito, off Depot St., downtown Boone. Very cool place, with very tasty/[I'm a potty-mouth!] burrito's and mouth watering/thirst quenching beer's! Black Cat's # is (828)263-9511. Thanks for the sponsorship Trey!
Sponsor #8!
Lucky #8 happens to be the kind-hearted Powell family, of Hickory, NC., who's love for the game, can be seen and very much appreciated at numerous disc golf events across the southeast year after year. Thank you for all that you do, and the support! jtpquality@hotmail.com
Sponsor #9!
Sponsor #10!
Thanks Mr. Vonnoy!
Sponsor #11!
Last, but definitely not least, our latest and newest hole sponsor comes from the President of the Watauga Insurance Agency, Inc., Ben Smith. If you don't have all your insurance needs covered, it might be a good idea to give Ben a call! We all know the saying, "It's better to be safe, than sorry!" Call today! You just never know! Watauga Insurance Agency, Inc. (Business, Home, Auto, Life, and Annuities) Proudly serving Watauga county since 1917! (828) 264-8291, or smithfin@bellsouth.net 743 West King Street, Boone, NC. 28607. Maybe we can get him to start insuring our favorite golf discs? Thanks for the sponsorship Ben!
Obviously, we still have more sponsorship opportunities left! The magic number is 7! For more info. on sponsoring a hole, please contact me a.s.a.p! $350 per hole for 2 years worth of mega advertising!
I'd also like to thank Gardenswartz Outdoors, Chuck Salisbury and Lynnea, way out in Durango, Co. for their generous contribution to the course/club. Chuck is a huge disc golf fan, and sent us four new Innova discs to use as prizes or something in the future. From one High Country to the other, Thank you for the support!
In fact, I'd like to throw it out there, that if anyone would like to donate any new or used golf discs, bags, shirts, stickers for the support of the course/club it would be gratefully appreciated. Free stuff is always one way to get more people together and involved. We could use the donations as course labor rewards, CTP awards, prizes, raffles, etc. Again, let me know if you'd like to help out in this way!
Last update (#5), I mentioned that one of member's, Jason Powell, originally from Hickory NC, now actually lives and works as a teacher outside of New Orleans. After Katrina he was back at home in Hickory with family not knowing his future. Well, I just got word from his father the other day, that Jason is back in Louisiana and doing fine. He's now getting ready to start school again. Good news and many blessings to you and your family.
High Country Leaf update! Very little change in Boone at about 3500 ft. 3rd week of Oct. should be close to peak? Maybe that will get Harold up here? Hee Hee, Ha ha! For all your latest mountain weather info., log on to, www.booneweather.com (http://www.booneweather.com) Enjoy!
Our last order of business is another reminder, that the 2005 United States Disc Golf Championship is just around the corner! It's held Oct. 12-16, annually at Winthrop University, in Rock Hill, SC. This is always a lot of fun and very exciting to watch all the top pros compete for the title/money. It's also a good way to pick up a few look and learn lessons and some cool, new disc golf merchandise! For the first 1,000 people, the 2005 USDGC Championship Rocs will be available to purchase on Saturday before the final round starts. For more info., directions, etc. check out the website at, www.usdgc.com (http://www.usdgc.com), or call Innova's Eastcoast office at, (800)476-3968
Keep on spreading the word! The more, the merrier, and the better our course/club will be! If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, concerns, resources, donations, news, etc., please don't hesitate to contact me!

Good news! Harold did manage to make it up here last week! In fact, he was up here again today! :)
Unfortunately for me, I wasn't able to spend the day at the park with today's extreme design crew (Harold Duvall, Aaron Kolbow (the parks athletics director), and a buddy of Harold's from Tenn.?) From what Aaron said, they all had a goodtime! Obviously, it was a beautiful day in the mountains and they were getting paid to design a disc golf course. :D Who wouldn't have a goodtime? :D It must be nice? :D:D:D
Let me tell you, this PLACE and PARK is simple breath-taking, and the COURSE is going to be spectacular!
I can't wait to see some baskets! Question is, will there be an ICE BOWL event this coming year? I sure hope so! I'm still thinking polar plunge for charity? Well, also for fun, laughter, and publicity! ;)
I know I can honestly speak for everyone, when I say, we're looking forward to Harold coming back, and hopefully soon! Stay tuned for more info. on disc golf in the High Country, Ashe Co. Park, Jefferson, NC. COMING SOOOOOON!

A beautiful piece of property with relatively few trees & manicured lawn lower part, little lake then up into some laurel / mixed hardwood ridges. The forest has lots of poplars low with mixed hardwood higher up with some laurel sparsely located. Few pines. Did not see any evidence of poison ivy vines in the trees nor sprigs up from forest floor. One possibly flat fairway through a laurel thicket, otherwise elevation changes everywhere.
Great vista mostly with unmanaged forest, one distinct x-mas tree farm in distance, only geometric part of horizon. Mountain breezes certainly will add to the challenge of this highlands course. Park has two small playgrounds, volley ball, ball fields, picnic shelter, restrooms....
No camping on site, but a couple of places nearby. Something tells me that disc golfers will fill camping areas during any event. There will be inevitable comparison to the famous Boylan Family Farm course of the early 90's in Laurel Springs NC but this is a very different piece of property. Ashe County Park course will become as legendary.

It's a beautiful 30 min. drive! Take 421 east about 10 miles, then a left onto 221 north for another 14 or so miles past Walmart, just about until you get into Jefferson and take a left onto Long St. Take Long St. and short distance til it deadends into a road I forget the name of? Take a right, go threw the intersection, keep going, keep going, about a mile or two, and you will see the park sign (Ashe Co.Park) on the left. I believe the name of the road is Ashe Park Dr. It really isn't that bad a drive at all, straight scenic highways almost the whole way there! :)
If you need more info. then that, check out pg. 1!

My wife and I, met Brent Peterson, and the Brady bunch :D, out at the part today to check out Harold's hole #1! :) Yes, this is true! Hole #1 might have been created?
:)
Tenitively, the basket is placed, or I should say, was placed due to the 40+ mph winds we had up here the other day (and that happens). The basket sits on a steep slope about 290' from the pad possibly. It's an open shot, but has a challenging distance perception due to the up to downhill elevation change. It's going to be a tuff putt from anywhere due to the slope, and yes, roller's are going to happen! :( OB is also about 75 ft away maybe too?
We threw a lot of discs at the basket today! Personally, Rocs, Teebirds, and Avairs, but that's just what I TRY and throw. Brent had abunch of new Innova stuff! Like I said, it was playing pretty tricky, the winds were howling still and you also can't see the basket from the pad! That makes it difficult, atleast at the moment, until I dial in on it, and nearly ACE it ever time!!!!!!!!! ;)
So far, great hole placement! :) A beautiful longrange view east, looking out over Mt. Jefferson, and the park's pond. It's like it was all meant to be. Great job Harold! I'm looking forward to #2!
Warning! Wind may blow your discatcher targets away! :D

Sorry about the delayed response, but I temporarily got kicked off by the PDGA for being a poser disc golf wannabe! :D It's not really funny, as little as I got to play this year, I pretty much am!
Hopefully, Harold will get up here real soon and give us all some relief, something to play on! I'll say it again, "All Good Things, In All Good Time!". :)
Now that winter has settled in, it's going to slow progress down even more. I'm not really sure the energy is there to be able to commit and pull off an Ice Bowl event this year. I'm not saying that it's definitely not going to happen, but at this time, it's highly un-likely. Maybe a later, unoffical Ice Bowl straight up for a local charity? This Springtime might be more realistic. Future Ice Bowls at this Park will be crazy cool though. ;)
COURSE UPDATE!!!!!
Not much has changed (as far as I know).
Presently we have 12 of the 18 hole sponsors wished for ( I think and hope). I got a message from Harold at the end of last week, saying that he was going to TRY and get up here HOPEFULLY by the end of this week, maybe even a few times! Pressure is on Harold!! /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif :D
Warning! Winter Weather Advisory! Cold + Windy = Misrable!
We still need 6 more hole sponsors!! $350 per hole for 2yrs.!! Let me know! These would make a great Christmas present!

Ashe Co. Park 18 Hole Disc Golf Course / High Country Disc Golf Club UPDATE #7!
Season's Greetings fellow disc golfers and supporters,
I know what I'm wishing for this Christmas. An 18 hole disc golf course at Ashe Co. Park. Aren't we all! Harold, you better be wearing a wool hat like Santa Claus the next time you get up here, because winter-time has now settled in and that means it's freeze your butt off weather! We also want a sleigh full of Innova discs and a practice basket for the course too! So, fuel up those horse-power underneath your hood and please hurry, hurry, hurry! Only two more weeks till Christmas!
The time is just flying by, and hopefully the discs will soon be too! The "New" Ashe Co. Park 18 hole disc golf course appears to be moving right along, just at a very slow pace.
Progress has been made though! A few weeks back, the course designer, Harold Duvall, came up to spend the day with the Park's Athletics' Director, Aaron Kolbow. The two of them walked the property looking at and discussing hole placement, and also collaborated on some of the do's and don'ts of the design. This Park is truly blessed with a dedicated and caring staff, and this course should become a good reflection of that. The best news yet is that Hole #1 might have found a home! If the strong winds wouldn't have blown Harold's practice basket away the very next day, Brent Peterson and I might have already aced it. No excuses, we had a basket there of our own.
We thought it was a grrrreeeat first hole, appropriately placed capturing a magnificent long range view east/southeast, with a big view of Mt. Jefferson. It's an open hole (meaning there are no trees), but it still plays rather difficult due to the elevation changes (which will obviously be the case threw out this mountain course). From the tee pad all you will most likely see is the top of the basket (the fairway goes up gently, then down fast). The basket sits on a steep grassy slope about 290' feet from the tee pad and maybe 50 or 60 feet from a subject OB penalty below. Having control of your disc is going to be crucial, and "smart play" might be the best way to approach it. The notorious strong winds and the unfortunate roller are going to be bad company and make this hole full of frustration! Not to mention, the green is going to be a putting hill-acious nightmare. If you can manage to avoid the mistake's it should be an easy par for most.
Personally, I would like to apologize for not getting in touch with you all sooner, but with the overall core responsibility to keep you all informed on me and me alone. Well, it kind of sucks, and I'd rather be playing disc golf! On the flip-side, it is a true honor. I'm just momentarily lacking motivation because I have a lot else to do, and the course progress has been much slower than I expected. No doubt about it, I thought things would of been done by now. That's that, no more pressures or promises here, and it looks as though there will be no official Ice Bowl event this year either. All I can tell you is that IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN, it's only a matter of time! That doesn't mean that we shouldn't still be proactive with getting ourselves more prepared for the big day. I consider this the promotional stage. It is very important that we keep on spreading the word, and get all the support we can! The more people that are involved the better it will be! Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any ideas, or would like to help in any way. Even if all you want to do is go check out the park, tee off a few times on Hole #1, and see what you got!
As far as hole sponsorships go, we now have 12 of 18! The only "New" sponsor yet to be recognized comes from Capricorn Construction. Capricorn Construction is based out of Boone, NC, and has a great reputation of getting the job done right! Whether it's new or just needing to be updated/remodeled, Capricorn Construction has the experience to do it all! Need someone dedicated and dependable, give them a call, (828)265-2710. Owner, Matt Dewhirst has been ready and willing to help out in any way from the very beginning. Thanks for all your support!
The Wish List!
If you're interested, or know anybody interested in sponsoring a hole, it's $350 per hole for two years! For that, you'll become an honorary "free" member of the "club", and also get an advertisement on your designated hole tee sign, on the course kiosk board, on the back of the score cards, and possibly even local media resources as well. Not a bad deal considering the amount of attention this course is going to get. Let me know?
Given the fact, that in the future we will have a formalized High Country Disc Golf Club, I think it would be a good idea to have a logo. So, if anyone is interested in voluntarily creating something, it would be very much appreciated. It needs to be something simple, easy and cheap to have printed on shirts, stickers, hats, etc. It also should probably have a mountain/disc golf theme to it and sport the club name. Again, let me know, or you can just send them to me. Together, we'll judge them all later and the winner will receive a new Innova disc golf package. These discs have been donated by one of our outside sponsors in Durango, Co. Thanks to Chuck Salisbury and Lynnea at Gardenswartz Outdoors for their generous contribution. (970) 259-6696 or gswartzskip@gobrainstorm.net
We are also going to need some recycled lumber to top the log stumps/legs to make benches at each hole. The course has to be aesthetically pleasing to the mountain environment.
Just a reminder! If you aren't already a PDGA (Pro Disc Golf Assoc.) member, now's the time of year to join or renew for 2006! For all the info, checkout the PDGA website at www.pdga.com (http://www.pdga.com) All I can say it that, if you love this sport, this is the best, most important way to show your support. For the money its worth every penny. All memberships include a free subscription to the Disc Golf World News magazine! Just another reminder, the Disc Golf World News is one of our hole sponsors!
Don't forget! You can also get online at the PDGA website, at www.pdga.com (http://www.pdga.com) to check out our course/club progress. Just go to the discussion board and scroll down to the course info subject and look for the "New" Mountain Course coming soon to NW, NC topic. Please feel free to join in and add a new post. Unfortunately, the rules have changed, and they now require that you are an active member of the PDGA. Just one more reason to join!
That should about do it. I'd like to wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and I look forward to throwing with you all in 2006! Cheers!
The High Country Disc Golf Club,

Again, Sorry for the late response! I had to get out of the cold for awhile, so Wendy and I spent the holiday's and played some golf down in warm and sunny FLA.
Got back last night and to my surprise the weather is rather comfortable up here in the mountains. No snow on the ground, high's in the upper 40's, but that's suppost to change this Thursday!
Harold did come up here again last Wed., but I haven't heard yet how much he was able to accomplish. He said that his wife bought him a nice pair of long johns though for Christmas, so he'll be able to tolerate the wintertime project. He also said that due to the Savannah Tourney coming up that it would be another couple of weeks before making it back up. We should definitely have a course to play on by late Winter or Early Spring!
Right on Brent P.! Count me in on Hickory's ICE BOWL Feb. 11th! Sounds like a lot of fun! Let me know if you need any help with that.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Ashe Co. Park 18 Hole Disc Golf Course / High Country Disc Golf Club Update #8!!!!!!!!!
To all disc golfer's and Ashe Co. Park disc golf course supporters,
I have some very exciting news to share with you all.
I'm pleased and proud to inform you all, that the "New" Ashe Co. Park 18 Hole Disc Golf Course has made a tremendous amount of progress over the last few weeks. This success has greatly been contributed by the collaborated efforts of our wonderful Ashe Co. Park's and Rec. staff and board members, especially the Park's director, Joe Boccardy and the Park's Athletics' director, Aaron Kolbow, along with Innova Disc Golf, and our legendary course designer, Harold Duvall. Harold has been "puttin" in the overtime lately to get this course ready for play and let me tell you, it is looking good! So far, he has accomplished a very impressive front 9 or 10 hole loop with long and short tee pads, just the way it ought to be. Hole #3 is going to be sponsored by Map Realty in Boone, NC. and is a 410 ft. slightly downhill crush (in the long position) through a narrow group of towering pines and over a pond, with the basket sitting just on the other side of the pond's edge. All I can say is bring your swim trunks with you.
Here's the best news yet!
Harold and/or his Innova team was actually able to get the course design laid out on an aerial photo of the park, which was then presented by the Park's director himself, Joe Boccardy, to the Park's board for FINAL APPROVAL, and Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah! They passed it unanimously! Amen! That was to be our biggest challenge thus far, basically because change isn't easy to come by when you're living in a small town that hasn't seen a whole lot of change. Again, a big THANKS goes out to the Ashe Co. Park's and Rec. staff, especially the Park's director, Joe Boccardy, and the Park's Athletics' director, Aaron Kolbow. Thanks for all your support, hard work, diligence and positive and caring outlook for the communities future. It is also very exciting to see a healthy relationship building between the Park's and Rec. staff and Disc Golfer's/Innova.
Believe it or not, but this coming Wednesday, Feb. 1st., we're actually planning on putting some of the baskets in and marking some tee pads! Well, actually setting the placement sleeves for the baskets (in concrete). You're welcome to join us, even encouraged, but be prepared, it is going to be a work day! You may be asked to hunt for locust posts for our tee signs in the woods all day? Regardless, it's a beautiful place, and it would be a great introduction to the park and the course. And don't forget your discs! After all, that's what this is all about right? How can we hold ourselves back, we have to throw a few hundred times at least. Seriously, We still have a long way to go before opening up the course to the general public. Before the big introduction, we need to have signs up, directionals, rules and regulations, etc. Brent Peterson has volunteered to be our temporary sign man!
Didn't I tell you it was all just a matter of time? Well, it's about that time! This outing is just one of the many scheduled work days to come. So if you can't make it out on Wednesday, no big deal. We are also always going to be subject to changing weather conditions, so it might be a good idea to contact me before hand if you plan to attend and I'll let you know what's going on, if anything. Also, if you'd like to schedule a work day of your own, we can probably make arrangements for that, but please don't take matters into your own hands, we do have a master plan.
More good news!
We have two new hole sponsors that I need to brag about, making that 14 total if all goes well? I haven't asked for anyone's money yet. Speaking of, it is also that time! So, if you're one of our lucky, special hole sponsors, please send me yo money! $350 per hole for a whopping two big years of advertising! That is an unbelievable deal! For that, you will get an advertisement on your designated or desired (if available) hole tee sign, on the back of all the scorecards (coupons encouraged for better overall promotion), on the course/park kiosk board, and possibly even some local media recognition. Potentially thousands of people are going to see it and appreciate it! Plus, you will also receive an honorary free "club" membership for the life of your term. So what are you waiting for? Act now! Plus, no maintenance fees or responsibilities required. We will even guarantee your complete satisfaction or your money back! Get your hole sponsorship today! Only 4 more hole's left!
So, where and what is all this money going too you ask? Good question! I tried to open up an account for the High Country Disc Golf Club and/or Assoc., and they said I needed a non-profit Id number to do so. Honestly, I really don't want to get involved with all that, it's really not necessary at this time. So, I decided to take the responsibility of handling the money myself. At least until there is a better option presented or available. Here is how it all breaks down if you'd like to try this at home....
Innova baskets, sleeves, covers, design, experience, help, etc. = $7500 Priceless!
Ashe Co. Park's and Rec. have agreed to pay $3000 of that, leaving a $4500 deficit owed to Innova
18 hole sponsor's @ $350 per hole = $6300
After paying off Innova their $4500 (the course basically), we (the club) are on the + side $1800.
That $1800 will then have to be properly managed by the "club" and help with future course maintenance issues and improvements (pads, signs, steps, retaining walls, etc.). Also disc sales, printing costs and other club expenses, tournaments, stickers, hats, shirts, etc., etc. Obviously, $1800 isn't going to go a long way, but with potential disc golf sales, club fees, and other good ideas, hopefully we can balance our checkbook and still have some money left over for pizza and beer!
Back to the bragging rights of our newest hole sponsors! Like I said before, we have two new hole sponsors, making that #13 and #14? #13 is another one of our local High Country allies/resources, Michael Bennett and Digital design. Michael has been an avid disc golfer for over 15 years now, so obviously he's super excited about finally having a course closer to home in the High Country. His company, Project Digital, is based out of Boone, and has become one of the best in the business at web page design, etc. They also do logo's, and if we're lucky enough, Michael says, "they may just do ours for the HCDGC"? Check out some of the designs they've already created for other clients. Http://www.projectdigital.net/portfolio/index.html Folks, these guy's and gal's are talented! Give them some love!
Our 14th hole sponsor comes from a guy who's been throwing frisbee's around for 40 years now. Since he was 5! He's as competitive of a person as you'll find in the sport, and he's currently sponsored by Discraft! He can easily be considered one of the best in our state, even world, and boasts a PDGA players rating of 972! He's a master in more ways then one, and he represents the Raleigh Disc Golf Community. Ladies and gentlemen, Kirk Yoo. Not only is Kirk active on the course, but he's now offering his time and help to make a positive difference in the sport by volunteering to represent NC amongst the PDGA board. What a guy! Thanks Kirk for all you do and your sponsorship and support of the Ashe Co. Park Disc Golf Course. I'd also like to take this opportunity to commend you Raleigh disc golfers on some exceptional courses in your area. For those of you that are interested, The Buckhorn Open is coming up Feb. 11th and 12th. Goto www.pdga.com (http://www.pdga.com) for more info. of this and other disc golf info.
Another big THANKS to all of our committed hole sponsors! If it weren't for you folks, all this might not be possible.
It's been a long time now since disc golf has been represented in the High Country. It goes way back to the early 90's since the Boylan Family Disc Golf Course and Tree Farm closed down outside of Laurel Springs, NC. For many of us, this Ashe Co. Park course is a dream come true! Let's all make sure we do are very best to nourish it along with the utmost respect. I know most of you already know this, but I'm going to go ahead and say it anyways. First impressions are important, and they can make a difference! I'm not finger pointing here, I'm talking about the introduction of a new disc golf course into a already well established public park or area. We do not own this land. We are not in control of this Park. Even though we think we deserve this course, we must continue to work for it and earn the privilege/rights to play disc golf in such a beautiful place. We need to make an effort to be nice and friendly and considerate to other's in attendance at the park. Possibly, even shed some light to those that have no idea what's going on around them. Safety is the #1 priority! So look before you throw! Let's also make sure that we read and follow all of the Park's rules and regulations! For that matter, it really wouldn't hurt to follow the PDGA rules and regulations as well. "Do unto other's as you'd have done to you!" Be respectful, courteous, and have fun! We also ask that you keep the course clean! Hold onto your butt! Keep our rivers and streams clean! O.K. enough said.
Sorry, I had to do it. I know you folks are smarter than that.
If we communicate with one another for a better understanding, then we shall have no problems! Yeah right, that's what I'm going to have to tell my wife when I get home late from playing disc golf every night. She is looking forward to throwing with some other women disc golfers though! There may just have to be a ladies night out at the course? Any High Country female disc golfers out there?
And finally, we have the continued wish list!
*a club logo design, so we can have a stamp, something to identify ourselves with and represent the HCDGC! There is a small 3 disc Innova package (donated by Gardenswartz Outdoors, in Durango, Co.) for the winner. If Project Digital has anything to do with it, I believe they are going to be hard to beat. These folks are professionals!
*someone to help with all or some of our printing needs! Scorecard's, info. sheets, flier's, etc.
*rough cut, milled 1x12's or 2x12's to top stumps to make benches. Or other ideas?
*donations to help out with promotions and work day give-a-ways! Disc's (new or old), shirts, hats, stickers, coupons, gift cards, etc. etc. Please send them to me!
*four more hole sponsors!
*any other donations you can think of that might be helpful? Mo money, mo money!
*Disc-counted mountain rentals for vacationing disc golfers?
*more people interested in disc golf in the High Country and the "New" Ashe Co. Park 18 Hole Disc Golf Course! Keep spreading the news!
Let me know if I'm forgetting anything, but I think that'll just about cover it. Man, I'm going to say it again, "I'd much rather be playing disc golf"! Soon, we can and will be disc-ussing these matters over a few rounds at the course! I look forward to meeting you all and thank you for your patience and willingness to help.
Folks, we're about to have ourselves one kick #$*&$!, championship quality disc golf course in the beautiful mountains of Ashe Co., in Northwest, North Carolina! I really think that this course is going to be the highest course east of the Rockies! At least until we build one in Boone, Blowing Rock, and/or Banner Elk!
See you all on down the fairway,

Today was the very first official, physical work day on the NEW ASHE CO. PARK 18 HOLE DISC GOLF COURSE! :)Although, just walking around this park is a good workout. :D To say the least (and I never can), it was an extremely exciting day, a dream come true, and I'm really not sure I'm going to be able to sleep tonight knowing that tomorrow I'm going to be one of the first ones to throw on the NEW "champion" Ashe Co. Park Course in the beautiful mountains of Jefferson, NC!" That has already been determined, like it or not! :D
We basically worked on the front 9 loop today and set pin positions in stone, teepads (w/ locust posts/Innova flags temporary). Pruned the pines on hole 3, cut back the greens on hole 8, and masacred a tight, monsterous downhill fairway for hole 9 threw the woods. Now, every hole on this course has so far measured up to it's designer's challenge, but this hole 9 is probably going to end up somewhere being close to 700 ft. from the longs, and is going to be a blast to throw! Or, it could suck really badly!
Participating in this glorious event we had the fabulous TEAM INNOVA gang (Harold, Stan, and 3 of the other guys, which I got hit with the name introduction thing all at the same time and earlier in the morning making it difficult, at least for me to grasp the entire day. Sorry guys! I do remember "Stretch" though, for the obvious reasons. :D We also had in attendance at the park, the parks director, Joe Boccardy, the athletics director, Aaron Kolbow, the park gopher, Shane, the maintence guy, Jimmy, and Daniel, who has built some really nice trails thru out the park. These guys make life a whole lot easier and it's awesome to see them awe at the flight of a disc! Sweet! :) They also enjoyed seeing a few of us dive bomb the pond on stellar hole 3! :( Is that a Innova marketing strategy? :D
I know I'm babbling here, but these are the folks that deserve a little recoginition for all their hard work! We also had joining us, 64 year old disc golf fanatic, retired, part-time Blowing Rock, NC. resident, Mel Jones from Fla. I know he reallly enjoyed hanging out with Harold and Stan all day! I think if it weren't for his opinion, a few of the hole's would have been a couple hundred feet further! :D Mel and his wife, Cara Jone's are our biggest sponsors thus far, sponsoring holes #1 and 18! Thanks Mel and Cara!
Last but definitely not least! :D We had one more volunteer worth mentioning, Tony Greco from Boone. Tony just graduated from ASU and is looking for a water quality job anywhere? Does anybody know anything? ;) Thanks for coming out Tony! There's a lot more work to do now! :D
Everything's just coming together awesome! :) Like I said, we do have a ton of work to do now! teepad leveling, trails, signs, benches, etc. :( Look at the bright side! At least 9 baskets are going to be in place! :)
Where is the tylenol? :D
+
We Need Pictures!!!!! Come on now ToDD.....U know must dgr's have A.D.D...I got half the way threw had to take a break before finishing /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif J/K ...Man i'm glad things have fallen into place for U... U deserve all the props, cause without U there would be NO dg up in those hills :D I suggest having a club workday on a Sat or Sun sometime soon before the pdga season has really started..Invite all the dg clubs around the area. The U.F.O club is down with helping u get that bad boy done...

So right you are Ross!
We do need to get some help out there and ASAP!
Work days are going to be held every Sat. (weather permitting) from 10am to ? Not this Sat. 2/18 due to below freezing temps. and more snow!
I can also make arrangements for those of you who would like to come up any given day of the week to work, but Saturday's are going to be the scheduled day!
It also might not be a bad idea to just give me call, and let me know when you're planning on being there, so I can try to be more prepared and manage tasks more effiently.
Right now, the front 9 baskets are in! We just need everything else that makes a good course a good course! (signs, benches, kiosk, trail building, tee pad leveling, pruning, moving a lot wood around, etc.) So, if you come, be prepared! Again, it may be a good idea to give me a call first!
from junction 421/221 (10-12 miles east of Boone), take 221 North towards Jefferson about 15 miles. Go straight through a big intersection (big for a small town, West Jefferson goes to the left). Continue straight on 221 North past the Walmart, Wendy's, High School, etc. (on the parellel road), til you get to the next stop light going into the town of Jefferson. That road will be Long St., turn left on Long St. Go about 1/4 mile til it deadends and take a right onto (Main St.?) Go through the intersection and follow this road for a few miles until you see the Park sign on the left side of the road. Turn left onto Ashe Park Rd/Dr. and keep going until you see the park. Turn left into the park if the gate isn't closed and follow the road to the first small paved parking area. Hole 1 start's above that on the left side of the walkway.
There you have it, I tried, if you get confused, again, please feel free to give me a call. I look forward to seeing everyone out there eventually! Enjoy!

Do to my cutting, coping, and pasting, a few of the things on this update may be repetitive.
Ashe Co. Park 18 Hole Disc Golf Course / High Country Disc Golf Club Update #9!!!!!!!!!
Greetings Fellow Disc Golfers and Supporters/Sponsors,
The front 9 baskets are in!
The New Ashe Co. Park 18 Hole Disc Golf Course is taking shape to become one of North Carolina's top disc golf course destinations! At the beginning of this month, we had our very first official, physical, ground breaking work day on the new course. To say the least (and I never can), it was a huge success! It was an extremely exciting, very beautiful day, and we accomplished well more than I ever anticipated or even imagined!
Participating in this glorious event we had the fabulous TEAM INNOVA crew (Harold Duvall, Stan McDaniel, and the other three amigos). We also had in attendance, the park's head director, Joe Boccardy, the park's athletics director, Aaron Kolbow, the park's maintenance staff, Jimmy and Shane, and the park's family program director, Daniel.
Also joining us was 64-year-old disc golf fanatic and retired part-time Blowing Rock, NC resident, Mel Jones from Fla. I know he really enjoyed hanging out with Harold and Stan all day! I think if it weren't for his opinion a few of the holes would have been a couple hundred feet longer! Mel and his wife, Cara, are our biggest financial supporters thus far, sponsoring holes #1 and #18! Thanks Mel and Cara!
And last, but definitely not least! We had one more volunteer worth mentioning. Tony Greco came out from Boone. Hey Tony, there's a lot more work to do now!!!!
We basically worked on the front 9 loop and set the pin positions in stone, marked several of the tee pad locations (most with a long and a short position) with small locust posts and temporary Innova flags that we embedded into the ground. We pruned the pines on hole 3, cut back the greens on hole 8, and massacred a tight, monstrous downhill fairway for hole 9 through the woods. Now folks, every hole on this course has so far measured up to its designer's challenge, but this hole 9 is probably going to end up somewhere being close to 600 ft. from the longs, and definitely promises to be a thriller to throw! Or, it could suck really badly if you get stuck in the woods!
The entire course thus far is proving to have something special in store for everyone-- just don't be surprised if it's a roller! It is truly soaring to be that quality "Champion" caliber course we've all been waiting for! A big THANKS to all the folks who came out that first day to help out and become a part of this historic moment in the High Country.
The very next day, Aaron and I had the privilege of putting the baskets in. As always, once we were finished, a few other stragglers showed up. All were forgiven, because they happened to be my wife, Wendy, Mel and Cara Jones, and Daniel (from the park). At about this time, what else was there to do other than throw that first ever, historical round! At least the first 8 holes of it. Hole 9 looked as though a tornado had just hit it. This is a moment that I'll never ever forget, basically because of the significance of it all to me personally. I know we were all feeling the positive vibes though. It was like we had all discovered a disc golf course in Heaven!
My very first drive jolted me back down to Earth quickly, with a very disappointing ACE RUN gone wild, leaving me with another historical/hysterical first ever course OB. Honestly, it bummed me out a for a second, but then I thought to myself, I'm playing disc golf on a warm and sunny winter day with good friends and at Ashe Co. Park, in Jefferson, NC., High Country, USA! It's a dream come true!
Over the past few weeks now, we've been slowly making progress mainly due to the winter weather conditions, but also because we're lacking the man power! If it weren't for the wonderful Parks and Rec staff, we wouldn't near be where we're at today. These guys have stepped up their game in more ways than one. They even cleaned up most of the dirty work on hole 9! Luckily for us, they're all just super nice, great people, and they seem to be really excited and happy to help. Let's just make sure we all thank these guys every chance we can get. They and the Park, deserve every bit of our R.E.S.P.E.C.T!
Unfortunately, the course is still several weeks away (?) from being ready for general public play. The Park actually doesn't even officially open until Spring, which by the way, won't ever affect disc golfin' hours, but may effect where you park and wish to begin play. Yes, the infrastructure of the front nine is nearly complete, but we have a ways to go before we have all the luxuries of a well established course. Not to mention, there is going to be a ton of wood to move around once the back 9 gets under way soon. Some of the things that are of the highest priority right now are building a course kiosk board (planning stages), making signs and directionals (in the works), building trails (planning stages), getting more financial support (need more), etc. etc.! Other things that need to be done, but are of lower priority, are leveling tee pads, making benches, adding pin placements, printing, etc.
Given the fact that we still have a long drive ahead of us before feeling comfortable opening the course, we need to get on it and work it out ASAP! So, I'd like to announce WORKDAYS TO BE HELD EVERY SATURDAY (weather permitting) FROM HERE ON OUT! This is just one more way that you can now help support the course! Money is good, but laborers are equally as important! Starting this Sat. 2/25, we will meet at 10AM (or whatever time you can get there). Just look around for some people with either shovels or discs in their hands, maybe some coffee. Each weekend we will try to accomplish a few of the responsibilities/chores that need to be addressed before having a little fun and rewarding ourselves at the end the day by throwing a round or two! Maybe even play some doubles? Maybe have a few give aways?
As a group we can decide how the rhythm of the day shall go. Most importantly, we don't want anybody to get hurt! Most of what needs to be done isn't going to be easy or fun work, so please be prepared and bring what YOU need in order to work and play safe! Under no circumstances will you be forced to do anything you don't want to do. These work days are hopefully going to be productive, but definitely with a very laid back, easy going flow about them. The mentality here is to create balance--a little bit of work, and a little bit of play! That's the only way to do it. We're not out there to hurt ourselves. That's why the more the merrier! Work smarter, not harder! Hey, if you'd like to bust your butt, then great. If you'd like to just come out and check out the course and do nothing, no big deal either. Please feel welcome too! If you need a break, want to leave and come back, throw some, whatever, nobody's going to hold you back. Heckle you maybe, but untimately you are going to be in charge of setting your own pace and finding something that fits you! There will be all kinds of odd jobs for all kinds of different people. Here is a list of items that I recommend: Boots or mud hoppers, gloves, extra clothes, a hat, water, food, tools (if possible), discs, money, etc. There are stores nearby. The park bathrooms may or may not be open. You know how it goes; we're all adults here. Pack it in, pack it out! Leave only beautiful paths to the next disc golf hole behind!
Just to be on the safe side, you may want to give me a call or email later in the week(s) to make sure there will be an organized work day that particular week. Again, work days will be subject to weather conditions and/or sh t happening. I will however make the greatest possible effort to be there on every given Saturday and/or to keep you all informed if the coming weekend looks to be scratched. Another thing is that, once you've seen and know what needs to be accomplished, you may want to volunteer your time during the week instead. We can also make arrangements for special groups that may want to help out too, like the ASU Trail Club, Boyscouts, 4-H camps, churches, etc. Please feel free to give me a call if you have any questions, suggestions, and/or concerns.
To sum it all up: *Work days will be held every Saturday, starting this Sat. 2/25, from 10AM til ? Please come prepared!
Directions to the Park: From Boone, travel east (about 10 mins.) on 421to Deep Gap. Once you're in Deep Gap, turn left onto 221 north and travel north (about 15-20 mins.) towards the Jeffersons. Go through the first big intersection w/ light (junction 221 and 163?) and keep traveling north on 221! After a few miles you should be able to see a car wash, Subway, Wendys, Auto Zone, Wal-Mart, High School, etc. on the parallel road. Keep going! Stay on 221 north for a few more miles until you come to the next intersection w/ light. That should be Long St. Take a left! Long St. dead ends pretty quickly into S. Main St. (no sign). There should be a Shell station on your right. Take a right onto S. Main St. and continue straight through the next intersection w/ light (Yamaha dealer and printing place on corner) Once you pass through that intersection the road changes to N. Main St. So, now you're on N. Main St.! Keep going a few more miles, until you see the Ashe Co. Park Sign on your left. Turn Left onto Ashe Park Dr or Rd. and continue straight until you see the Park. You made it! Turn left into the Park and follow the road around and up into the small paved parking lot where we will try and meet up. If you have any problems or need better directions, again, please feel free to give me a call. FYI, most cell phones don't get reception up here in Ashe Co. quite yet, so if you need to use one once you're here, I will make mine available. Drive safely!
Other areas of business to disc-cuss!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SPONSORSHIP PAYMENT NOTICE! NOW IS THE TIME TO SEND IN YOUR MONEY!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So far, only a few of our sponsors have stepped up to the box and have sent in their checks! I'd like to thank Mel and Cara Jones of Blowing Rock, Tom Owens at The Gallery Woodworking Company in Boone, and the Powell family of Hickory for their quick releases and generous contributions to the course! These folks are going to be the silent heroes of helping to build this course! We're still looking forward to receiving financial support from the many of you who have previously expressed commitment and interest in supporting the Ashe Co. Park 18 Hole Disc Golf Course by sponsoring a hole. No pressure, just please let me know? Remember the deal you're getting! $350 for 2 yrs. worth of advertising and bragging rights! Please make checks out to Innova Disc Golf, but send them to me at....... 411 Woodie Ave. West Jefferson, NC., 28694
Also, please include in your envelope your business card or logo, name, saying, or whatever you want us to put on your tee sign, etc., (so we have means to advertise for you). You may also want to throw in your desired hole # or #'s, just in case your first choice isn't available. Or, mention that you just plain don't care what hole you get. Again, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to give me a call or send me an email.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SPONSORSHIP PAYMENT NOTICE! NOW IS THE TIME TO SEND IN YOUR MONEY!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you'd like to become an Ashe Co. Park Disc Golf Course supporter, we still have a few more opportunities for hole sponsorships! For $350 you get 2 yrs. worth of advertising (on your designated hole tee sign, on the back of the scorecards, on the Park/course kiosk board, and possibly even local news media resources)! And now we're also considering putting them on the baskets too? Think about it this way--for less than just 50 cents a day you can make the lives of thousands of people over this period of time a little happier! So, who wants to be the nice guy?
Here's a guy that deserves a little recognition: Brent Peterson of Wilkesboro, NC. For those of you who don't know Mr. Peterson, he has been one of the leading factors down at our neighboring Hickory course, helping out with just about everything, from signs to benches, tournaments to tee pads. That said, we have to be thankful that he lives a little closer to Ashe Park than Hickory these days. He's already been out to the course a few times measuring off distances for our temporary tee signs he has volunteered to do (same as Hickory's). He also has bartered with one of his good friends, Shannon Griffin, of Hickory, NC, to work on our club logo. He re-did Hickory's club logo last year and it looks very cool! His company is called Griffin Graffix, and he specializes in design, signs, and things along those lines. If you need his services in or around the Hickory area, you can contact him at (828) 291-5407. So far, he's just one of the several professional artists we may have going for the glory! A buddy of mine from Fla., Charlie "Ching" Hill, emailed me just yesterday saying he came up with something. If digital design has the time, they may also be a contender. We'll just have to wait and see, but I'm looking forward to printing some shirts and stickers out ASAP for promotion and another type of course fundraising effort!
Enough said. It's time to start putting words into actions! If we all just contribute a little, we can accomplish a lot! I look forward to seeing and/or meeting most of you as the New Ashe Co. Park Course begins to take form and eventually sucks us all in this together!
Thanks again for everyone's interest and willingness to help!
See you on down the fairway,

To sum it up,
It means get off your #$*&$! and come out and help us build this course, so we don't have to hear your candy #$*&$! whine about #$*&$! later like a little girl! :D
It isn't easy having to be the one that tries to keep all this together. It isn't just me, but it isn't you! Like I said before, I just wanted a place to play discgolf! As soon as that goal is accomplished, I'm done with the spoon feeding. The only reason for my elaborational updates is mainly because I'm trying to gain support here. These updates are for promotion. For the supporters/sponsors/recreational players that aren't that familar with disc golf the same way you and I know it.
It's just like the saying, "It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it!" Anybody, anybody?
Hey, I'd much rather be playing disc golf!

JUST A REMINDER! COURSE WORK DAY TOMORROW!
This coming Saturday 2/25, we will be meeting at the park around 10am to attempt to get a little work done on the NEW ASHE CO. PARK 18 HOLE DISC GOLF COURSE.
The weather report appears to be pleasantly tolerable. As long as we get out there before the winds pick up and the sun disappears it should be a great day in the Mountains for Feb!
Hi: 50 Lo: 20; Partly cloudy; Turning colder at night; Late afternoon & evening sprinkles to flurries; SW wind 10-20 mph becoming NNW 15-25 mph at night with gusts to 40 mph
Please be sure to bring what you need! You know much better than I! Here is a list of things I recommend: Boots or mud hoppers, work gloves, extra warm and dry clothes, a hat, lip balm, water, food, tools (if possible), discs, money, etc. *we may or may not have discs available to purchase?
Should you bring your tools? Absolutely, if you don't mind possible sharing them with others. We may need an extra chainsaw(s), pruner's, lopper's, post hole digger's, shovels, brush cutter's, tamping bar, etc.
Directions to the Park: From Boone, travel east (about 10 mins.) on 421to Deep Gap. Once you're in Deep Gap, turn left onto 221 north and travel north (about 15-20 mins.) towards the Jeffersons. Due to the lack of interest in having to WORK out in the freezing cold wind chills and possible snow showers, this week's Ashe Park Disc Golf Course Appreciation Saturday is CANCELED!
Not that any disc golfers would ever show up anyways.
Plus, there's just way to much going on elsewhere this weekend!
It's a toss up between Hickory's "NEW" bag tag challenge, This Sat., 11am, 1 round, possibly 2, with a little bit of this and that? or Sunday Dubs at Yadkinville, ACE POOL over $250!!! or just sit at home and watch basketball?
Hope to see you all up here in the mountains next Saturday, 4/1! No April fools, we have a lot of work that needs to be done!
Here's something else to think about! :)
It's not set in stone, but it's in the works! We're planning on scheduling an impressive intro. tournament up here in the mountains at the new Ashe Co. Park Course, in Jefferson, NC. (Harold being the TD) July 8, 9th weekend! If all goes well this event will be called the 1st. Annual High Country Throw-down! So, mark your calenders because theres no better place to be than in the beautiful mountains during the summertime sizzle! Stay tuned for all the details soon!

Ashe Co. Park 18 Hole Disc Golf Course / High Country Disc Golf Club UPDATE #10!!
Dear Fellow Disc Golfers and Ashe Co. Park Disc Golf Course Supporters,
The new 18 hole disc golf course at Ashe Co. Park in Jefferson, NC. is coming along slowly but surely. Basically, we just don't have the physical help needed to bust the project out, or the money for that matter. For those of you that have previously expressed commitment to sponsoring a hole, make your checks out to Innova Disc Golf. $350 per hole, and please include your business card, logo., desired hole #, and/or whatever else you want to see advertised. Send checks to me at, 411 Woodie Ave., West Jefferson, NC. 28694. For more information about sponsoring a hole, please contact me! There are holes still available!
The front 9 baskets are in and the course is playing both fun and challenging! We're lacking all the luxurious of a well established course (concrete pads, signs, benches, etc.), but we'll get there! The back 9 is in the process of being laid out and is going to require a lot more intensive work!
For the past several Saturday's now, I have made an attempt to get some folks together to help build on what we have going. The attendance has been shockingly low, but mainly, I'm guessing, because of the weather? It could be weak promotions though? Regardless, I am sorry to say, that my personal schedule cannot uphold/withstand these Saturday commitments any further. Unfortunately, that means NO MORE DISC GOLF APPRECIATION SATURDAY'S! That is, unless someone else wants to step up and continue the campaign? The alternative is, that WORKDAY'S ARE NOW GOING TO BE AVAILABLE EVERYDAY! Why shouldn't they be with the amount of work needing to be done to fancy up the course. Just let me know ANYTIME you're interested in lending a helping hand, and I will very easily find you something do it. I only live a few miles away from the park/course (lucky me). Also, the park staff is usually on hand during the week and they have been extremely helpful thus far, which is a huge plus! I can't promise you that we will always be available, but if you try, I'm sure you can get in touch with us giving prior notice to your arrival. We'd be more than happy to point you in the right direction! There are several benefits to this new schedule, but most importantly providing potential volunteers with unlimited opportunities! So, if you want to play on a nice disc golf course in the High Country? That answer depends on you!
Also, due to the changes in more ways then one. We will be starting up DISC GOLF WEDNESDAY'S! (Sorry Hicktown, but I had to do it) I will be hosting a little introductory and fun, $5 random draw doubles (best shot) round on Wednesday's starting @ 5:30pm! (2) 9 hole rounds. Winner's will get a cash pay out! There will also be possible give-a-ways each week depending on the turn out. Disc's will be available to purchase as well!
To sum it all up! NO MORE SATURDAY'S!!!!!!! WORKDAY'S ARE NOW EVERYDAY! Starting April 5th, DISC GOLF WEDNESDAY'S @ 5:30PM! $5 RANDOM DRAW DOUBLES! (weather permitting).
Just a reminder! Don't forget about July 8th, and 9th! These are the scheduled dates for the 1st Annual High Country Throw-Down! More details soon!
Thanks goes out to everyone who has so far contributed to the success of this very exciting new disc golf course in the High Country! Keep on spreading the news!
Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, donations, sponsorships, need directions, etc.?
I hope to see you all down the fairway soon,

I ain't gonna lie to you. Wednesday night double's hasn't had much of a turnout. Until the Park director lets me get the course in the local papers, and also we have our kiosk built, it's hard to get all the information out there. The word is spreading though, and the front 9 is pleasently playable, and without a map.
Hole 1 starts above the small parking lot (in the middle of the park). Hole 1's basket is sporting a very cool Innova Flag! All the short pad's have a pole up (signs will be up soon). Both long and short pads have locust posts and HAD flags embedded in the ground for temporary identification. Hole 5 is playing short due to the greens construction, and watch out for the poison ivy. We also still need to level up our teepads on Hole 9, but we do have rubber pads for them.
Still a lot a fun!
I will post the distances later!

Wow i got a chance to play this course on saturday afternoon
it was a lot more grassy than i expected, the park land was really awesome and the course makes good use of the elevation my favorite holes had to be hole 3 longs and hole 9 longs,
i let my friend throw my red champion tl and he threw it in the pond on hole 2
he went in but it was in some green reeds and he couldnt find it
i lost a glo starfire on hole 9, it hit one of the last trees on the right before the opening. i looked for like 30 mins but couldnt find it
if anyone finds them they have my # on them, give a me a call
The course is sweet can't wait to see what it looks like when its finished.

Small turnout for another Wednesday, but a memoriable one!
We all witnessed a gorgous full color double rainbow! I'm telling you folks, this course is going to be sweet once it's all said and done! It's a beautiful park, and the course ain't to shabby either!
I got all the signs up yesterday as well! :) We decided to start with only the short tee's, so the long tee distance's you'll have to find on the "soon to be" available scorecards. On the "soon to be" built kiosk.
We still have a lot of work to do on this course, so the thought of hosting an official PDGA tournament this year doesn't look good. Regardless, we will have an alternative for you because I know you all just can't wait to beat the summertime heat and come up to the mountains for a little vacation, and to play the "new" course at Ashe Co Park, in Jefferson, NC.
We are planning to have a really fun charity tournament later in the Summer (TBD) benefiting the Lance Armstrong Cancer Foundation! www.livestrong.org. (http://www.livestrong.org.) Some of you folks might have participated in such a fundraising event in the past few years organized nationally by the man, Chris Himing. Well, I haven't heard anything from him yet, so we're going to continue the effort because we all really should! It's one heck of a good cause. Did you know that 1 out of every 3 people will be diagnosed with Cancer in their lifetime. I'll let you know more info. once we plan the date, and get things organized. Just something to think about.
Also, there is some strange person's pet deer that sometimes roams the park/course. It has a orange collar on it, and no kidding, it'll come right up to you. Freaked BP and I out at first. :D

Well, I just heard from Chris Himing regarding this year's nationwide Disc Golfer's against Cancer Fundraiser benefiting the Lance Armstrong Cancer Foundation.
Chris is an Australian native and actually has to go back because his Visa expires later this year, so he has passed the torch onto Dave Hendrickson of the Disc Golf Mag. to run this year's charity marathon.
So, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what's going on and try to help out however we can.
This event deserves your attension! Stay tuned!

I know, I know, I should probably start a new subject.
I got some more info. on this year's Charity Marathon benefitting the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Basically, it's pretty much going to be just like year's past, other than the time scheduling. In the past it was promoted during the months of June/July, and this year it is to be held in Oct./Nov.?
I'm planning for "our" local event to be held sometime in Sept., because I'm hoping Harold will be able to come up here and help run a charity tournament style format event, instead of the 24hr. marathon. I guess I'm breaking the rules all over the place, but whatever it takes to raise some money for this very worth while cause! Cancer is no joke, and if you believe in karma, you better be there!
We're also thinking that we will have a super silent auction throughout the day, with all kinds of mountain items to be able to reward yourselves for making donations. I'm talking about hotel stays, rafting trips, ski passes, resturants, discs, etc. 2 yrs. ago in Hickory we did this, and raised over $2,000 for LAF, and came in 6th place overall. Thanks mostly to Freddie Bowman for that. He even won a basket!
We'll also have free food, with hopes of generating more donations! Raffles, and who knows what else? Maybe a money sucker machine to suck the cash right out of you. I can't forget about the usual nice player's package also, along with trophies (?) for the winner's. I know it's early to be making promises, and you think I would of learned the lesson by now, but I really feel strongly about participating for the cause, and we can make it a great, positive, fun way to break in the NEW MOUNTAIN COURSE! How about a charity Poker tournament afterwards?
I'm looking forward to it! Playing disc golf, and helping the fight against Cancer. That's a no brainier!
As soon as we figure out the date and a few more of the details, registration will begin immediately!
First though, we have to get this course finished and looking good! I'd much rather be playing!
Stay tuned!

I'd like to THANK the Western NC DGC based out of Asheville for their hole sponsorship and support for the new High Country Course, ASHE CO. PARK, JEFFERSON, NC. :) You can check out all the other cool things the WNCDGC is doing @ www.wncdiscgolf.com (http://www.wncdiscgolf.com)
Hard to believe they are willing to be so generous giving the fact that they too need money to help move and construct a new and improved 36 hole Richmond Hills Course! Looking forward to that! :)
Hopefully someday we can make it up to you!
That makes number six of people who have actually paid for a hole sponsorship! :) Obviously, we need more! Only $350 for 2 yrs. worth of advertising (tee sign, kiosk, scorecards, local media resources, and maybe the basket?), and bragging rights! For more info. scroll back or just get in touch with me.

The course Kiosk is finally done, and well worth the wait, it looks super nice. :)
So far, what I'm hearing, is that the course is both challenging and a whole lot of FUN! :) YOU CAN EVEN manage to find your way around with the tee signs (on the short tees only), and directionals. Short's are white, long's are blue. You may need a bird's eye though to find them.
As if Hole 9 wasn't bad #$*&$! enough, it's now even longer! Presently, roughly 700ft.from the long tee, 560ft. from the short! Watch that disc fly! :)
Back 9 should be getting underway soon! :)

If disc golf isn't enough fun, then there's always canoeing down the New River. :)
Todd's Canoe service now offers customized canoe adventures, and/or canoe rental.
$12-per canoe rental per day (you will need proper car racks)
$25-per canoe (2-3 hour trip w/put in and take out service).
Longer trips available, subject to availability and weather conditions, and prices are subject to change. Heads up notice needed, therefore appt. is necessary.
It takes a lot of volunteer time to build a disc golf course. :D

Last month I had the opportunity to travel over Whitetop Mtn. one Sunday to play golf at Ashe Co. Park. I HAD A GREAT EXPERIENCE! and I met some cool locals
I didn't have directions, nor had I found this thread yet, but just noodled around Jefferson a bit and found the park. I thought the park had a great layout with several different recreation opportunities. Outside of disc golf there were several playgrounds and picnic pavilions, trails, a small lake with a fishing pier, an RC course, basketball court, baseball/softball fields, and other amenities. I thought the park was very well rounded and the mountain views are <font color="red">spectacular</font>. /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
As for the disc golf course, I thought it was great for such a new location. Normally it takes several years to establish a good course but Ashe Co. Park has a great course that will only get better as it developes further. The design and flow were excellent and it is welcoming to beginners as well as challenging to more skilled players. There were a variety of shots, both left and right (mostly) with 7 of 9 open and two wooded holes. The finishing hole is one of the best holes in the state...approx. 700' downhill through tight woods to an open field...on this hole, 3 is birdie. My favorite shot was hole # 3 long...400+ over the lake the whole way...Grip it & Rip it!. The only complaint I had were the transition holes...#'s 5 & 6...they were too short and one played into a wetland-floodplain (5). I think they should be made into one hole with the basket on the edge of the hill slope to make the roll away factor greater.
I know the course is still under development and the back nine will make this course a premier destination for golfers all over the area. I would love to contribute my time and opinions regarding the rest of the corse and put me down for the Highlands Disc Golf Club. Big UP's to all that have dedicated thier efforts to bring disc golf to Ashe Co. especially the parks staff for having the vision to develop a truly multi-use park. :D

Lowe Bibby, a roving disc golfer from the Raleigh area checking in. I've been lurking on this thread for some time and following the progress. I've played every public course in NC except 3- yours in Ashe CO, Elk Mountain in Plumtree, and the new one going in in Albemarle. I've also played every private course in NC except for 2 or 3 as well. My hobby is evaluating disc golf courses, so I've also done my personal evaluation of all the NC courses I've played. You can see some of my reviews at the Google group who's info is below. More are being added all the time. I plan to play Plumtree in Sept. I AM waiting until you get 18 holes finished until I make the trek out there, So keep up the good work!

Hard to get anything done when everybodies thinking like BS(scarey). :p Not to bring up bad karma again because we all have our priorities. So, a big THANKS to everyone that does spend time helping out with their local course/club! :)
We just don't have the local scene yet of dedicated disc golfers to get it all done. That's going to change soon because as we all know disc golf is an addiction!
Regardless of the poor turnout for this past Saturday's workday, we did manage to get a few things accomplished. Thanks to Jeff for helping to install our new tee pad markers (painted tennis balls). Our tee pads are much easier to see now, and look good too! :)
Westside Justin came over the Mtn. on Sunday for a good balance of work and pleasure. We installed a few new pin positions. :) It's kind of hard to explain what we have up our new sleeves at this point. :D
Other than that.....Harold spent Friday and Saturday studing the layout over and over and over again. He's a hole designing machine! :D Due to some of the un-knowns of the Park, a few changes are going to be necessary for the overall course/park/mountain experience.
One of the things you have to understand about Harold, is that he doesn't settle for average. Every hole has to be special! :) Rather than working from one hole to the next, he's not afraid of going back a few holes and looking at every possible oppurtunity from a different perspective for the overall best design! I'm so thankful for having him and Innova involved with this new mountain course. :) He's the X-factor, and no need to ask Y? :D
Keep on letting us know what you think out there? Your opinions (eventhough some of them may suck), are still fun to hear and can make a difference! ;)
Next course workday is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 10th.
Wednesday doubles @ 5:30, cash payout!

No complaining here, if there were more people less work would've gotten done due to delegating and someone telling us how to do it. Also if Freddy didn't get Dumbo Ears and run out of gas. Hey guys, lets try to drum up some support to help @ Sept. 10th workday during the tournaments the next couple of weekends.
I know we have lost Randy due to a hand injury, but surely we can post some fliers on ASU campus or at the kiosks in Hickory, Yadkinville and Kingsport to draw some players. If you include the notion of pick up doubles after the work is done you will get more folks to show up.:D
Is Daniel going to be there to show us what can be removed? I am skilled at running chain saw, loppers, pruners and still have a slightly good back at this point. :o I want to make headway on the back nine and we can make new directional signs to rearrange the flow of play.

Yes, The director of the park is insisting that the official name of the course be, The High Country Disc Golf Course. Well, the peace pipe has been officially passed between the Yadkinville DGC and The High Country DGC. ;)
I had a blast down in Yadkin Co. this past weekend participating in the Homegrown tour at Jamie's private Ramcat course! For more about the course and my experience, see the Yadkinville Thread!
I'd like to thank the Yadkinville DGC and Jamie for their very generous contribution to helping support the new High Country Disc Golf Course at Ashe Park in Jefferson, NC. by sponsoring a hole. That makes lucky charm # 7 of 18. Not bad considering that the Ashe Park course isn't even finished yet, nor has it developed a dedicated local disc golf scene.
Again, this course promises to be one full of greatness, and it couldn't be possible without the help of our hole sponsors!
Thank you all again! I look forward to the day when we can all rejoice that another great WNCDGC is born. Push it!

Most of you that have played the new Ashe Park course probably felt the long Mtn. transitions between holes 6-7-8-9. Well, I think we got the problem solved. There is going to be some changes made from hole 7 on........
We got approval Friday of last week to do some really cool things that we were told we couldn't do before. That's progress! Sometimes you have to look back, inorder to move forward. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
The new look is going to be off the chains! Hopefully in them! :) The holes are going to be even better, w/ much easier transitional walks. These holes are going to be worth your "drive". I hope your putter has brakes! :D
If you can't handle it and find yourself whinning, then you're obviously not ready for the blue tees, play from the white positions.
Hole sponsorship update.........Our goal is 18, but if we had the financial support, we could easily have more holes, and comfortably! Not out of the question. Once you see this place, your going to understand all the buzz regarding it.
To sponsor a hole, the cost is $350 for a 2 yr. period. Most likely 3 yrs. because I'm not going to start the term until all 18 or more sponsors have been identified, and also the course has to be completed and playable. You will also receive recognition on the course kiosk board, your designated hole tee sign and possible basket, and on the back of the scorecards. Plus, local media resources from time to time. This is by far the easiest way to show your support.
Currently we have 7 of the 18 hole sponsors!
Hole # 1, Mel and Cara Jones
Hole # 2, Matt Dewhirst, and his company, Capericorn Construction, Boone, NC.
Hole # 3, Tom Owen's, and his company, Gallery Woodworking Co., Boone, NC.
Hole # ?, The Powell Family
Hole # ?, The Western NC Disc Golf Club, wncdiscgolf.com
Hole # ?, Yadkinville Disc Golf Club
Hole # 18, Mel and Cara Jones
Thanks to all our course sponsors! If it weren't for you guys we wouldn't be "putting" at anything. I prefer Innova Disc Catcher's, and plastic! Big Thanks to Innova Disc GOlf for all there help as well!
Remember, this is "our" course. Let's see that we give it all the attention it deserves!

"Weather" we like it or not, the first signs of Fall are all around us! Yes, the leaves are starting to change!
Today's mountain forecast calls for the high temperture's in the low to mid 60's, with the low temperture possibly creeping into the 30's for the first time in a long while.
For those of you that are interested in leaf watching, usually the 2nd. weekend of Oct. is peak around these neck of the woods.
Ironically, that's our next scheduled course workday, Oct. 15th.. And don't forget that the days before the USDGC is held in Rock HIll, SC. Which if anybody is interested in carpooling down there from the mountains, let me know? We may even have access to the park's 4-H van?

I'm interested in traveling down to USDGC together, but I'm not sure what days I'll be taking off to head down. I need to give you a call to retrieve my glasses this Thursday afternoon.

More good news! :) We have 2 more sponsors to be thankful for! Rick Rothstein and the Disc Golf World News, and the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company!
The Disc Golf World News happens to be our furthest sponsorship coming from way out yonder in Kansas City, MO. And, the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company happens to be our closest sponsorship, right here in good ol' West Jefferson, NC.
I'm not sure to many courses can brag about having sponsors like these. What a statement for this new course.
Like I've said before, let's give thanks, honor and support to those who support us! Check out a copy of the Disc Golf World News today at, www.discgolfworld.com (http://www.discgolfworld.com), or toll free at 888-237-6884. Why you are at it, wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too! :D
Here is another look at all our current course/hole sponsors.......
Hole # 1, Mel and Cara Jones
Hole # 2, Matt Dewhirst, and his company, Capericorn Construction, Boone, NC.
Hole # 3, Tom Owen's, and his company, Gallery Woodworking Co., Boone, NC.
Hole # ?, The Powell Family
Hole # ?, The Western NC Disc Golf Club,

I never know when the Caroline flow regime will dry up leaving me no crumbs to follow. I prefer the more perennial flows of cheap non edible products, such as shades or discs. At least I have a reason to come back over the mtns.

Looking forward to the USDGC this coming week! I'm happy to say and recognize that the High Country has a representative this year, Jack Schmalfeld! A fine young transfer from the Raliegh area, and now ASU student.
Jack, You need to get your priorities straight and get out to the course more! :D
Anybody know what ken Climo does for a living? :D
I'm planning on attending the championship this year, but only as a spectator (Saturday), just because I'm a nice guy and wanted everybody else to be able to play. :D :D
The Sunday following the Championship is the next scheduled group course WORKDAY at Ashe Park, OCT. 15th!
Hope to see you all there, and there!!
Also, Don't forget about the Yadkinville Open, Nov. 10 and 11th! This course and tournament are getting better by the second, and that's saying a lot above and beyond their already greatness! The Yadkinville club knows how to do it right, and in the future I look forward to joining force's with our foothill friends from aces to tournaments.
I'm still thinking Western NC Cool Camping Summer Mountain Points Bonanza. ?????????? Asheville too! Maybe even Hickory? The Grateful Disc Summer Tour? "You can say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
First we need to finish the Ashe Park course. Soon thou shall be done.
Harold was up here again on Wednesday ( due to a national homeland security thing going on at Winthrop), and I think we have a pretty good idea of what is going to happen. Those of you who think it would be easy are seriously out of your minds. So many fairways. You can't possibly understand giving the circumstancances. Although, some of you might?
I promise you, all this time, is going to be worth the reward! :)
Ashe Country Park, Jefferson, NC.! That is all you need to understand! :) For more info, call Todd @ 336-649-0888

From an email I got Thursday:
"we really need folks to come to Richmond Hill to show the City of Asheville the popularity of disc golf. Please encourage any and all to be at the claypit of Richmond Hill park on Sunday at 2pm. There will be no golf played, but we will be ensuring future golf at Richmond Hill.
That's Sunday October 8th

It's a bummer to hear about what has happened down at the new Richmond Hills course, in Asheville. I wish I could be there to help (especially because you guys kicked down $350 for a hole sponsorship helping to support Ashe Park), but I already have too much commitment and frustration getting people involved at the new Ashe Park course. It's unfortunate that only a few good men care enough to tackle the responsibities that it takes to build/establish a new course.
Us course gopher's are all in the same hole together :D, and I often find myself asking why do I care so much? That's not cool.
What is cool, is all the pretty Fall leaves turning colors!
If you're interested in leaf looking, now is time to come up to the mountains! Peak season could be anywhere from now to just past this coming weekend.
You might want to throw your white disc! ;)
Don't forget to bring a camera and share some of the photos with us all. I don't have the computer skills to do so.
Good luck Jack at the USDGC!

Another disappointing workday gone by this Sunday. Hard to get much done when I'm the only fool working for the second month in a row. :(
Lot's of thrower's out enjoying themselves though, doing their best to avoid me and my recruiting lecture. :D Thanks just isn't good enough when you're playing the course more then I even get too. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I will survive though, and try again next month, Sunday Nov. 19th!
Regardless of the lack of help the course is coming along nicely, and I know most of you are going to be very impressed and I look forward to that. I did manage to re-do all the tee pad markers, again with recycled tennis balls painted blue for the long tees and white for the short tees. I also marked a new location for an Alternative Hole # 9, and a drop zone for long # 3. I will explain in a second........but the best news by far is that I got the practice basket in!!!!! :)
Here's the way it looks at the moment........Since the park is the most beautiful place you've ever seen, it's hard to feel good about skipping some great holes! So, what we decided to do, is have a "Short Loop"/Alternative Hole 8 and 9! This route is just as good as the orginal Hole 8 and 9, but brings you closer by the parking lot for whatever reason need be. It really is a nice option for several potential reasons.
So, the course will have 20 holes! :) And, the new "Short Loop", or by Innova's marketing term, "the SL", Alt. holes 8 and 9 are playable now! Alt. 8 has it's own basket in, and Alt. 9 will play at the same basket as "OG" 9 with a clear right of way factor. Shouldn't be a big deal. These alt. tee's are identified with just plain ol yellow tennis balls. Directional signs will be up when I get around to it. Course map and scorecards soon to follow.
Harold should be up here in the next few days/weeks to finish up the back 9 design! :) The Park staff is well equipped with nothing else to do, but get R done. I apoligize for using that kind of language. :D
Don't forget, STARTING NOV. 5th, $5 Random Draw Doubles every Sunday, Tee time 1:30pm sharp! Cash payout!

I can already tell you what I think of the Yadkinville Course. I think it's freaking awesome, and if you guys are going to drive anywhere tomorrow, Yadkinville is the place to go! Especially if you haven't played it before, and/or plan to play in the Yadkin Open in a few weeks. It's just about an hour from Boone, depending on which side of town your coming from. I might even be able to catch you guys there. Let me know if you go?
Where else are you going to go? There's only Ashe Park and Hickory. Hopefully soon Ashe Park will have 18 holes (actually 20), and then there'll be no reason to go anywhere else for awhile! :)

Missed you yesterday Todd. Hope the mattress shopping was productive and the Yadkinville round pleasant. Threw the rest of my stuff in the truck for DR and played a round at Ramcat. Only five of us after thirteen last Wednesday. Everyone either packing or saving themselves for disc roast. :D A few of those magical, only-on-Wednesday-shots made. Some old man aced #14 in the Narrow-assed Oak position. OK it was me. Funny thing, I've only been paired with Ben Porter once before on Wednesday afternoon and that time he aced #14 in the same position. Of course Karma dictates that Ben mentioned that point just before I drove.

Nope, didn't move it, but that's exactly what I told Ben as we were walking up the fairway. If I can ace it, then it's too easy. :D I only have four at Ramcat, three witnessed. I must have hit the basket on #7, the short rhbh anhyzer over the gully and up the deer trail, at least seven or eight times but it only stuck once and that was unwitnessed.
