Ok, ok - I realize I've probably just missed something here - but the way
I read the rules - mini marker discs are NOT legal. Here's why:

---
According to rule 802.01.F:

"All discs used in play, except mini marker discs, must be
uniquely marked in ink or pigment-based marking which has
no detectable thickness."

This sentence and the title of section 802.01 clearly
classify mini marker discs as 'Discs Used In Play'.
---
According to rule 802.01.A:

"Discs used in play must meet all of the conditions set forth in
the Official PDGA Technical Standards Document. See section 805 B
for disc technical standards."

As 'discs used in play', mini-marker discs must meet all of the
conditions set forth in 805 B
---
According to rule 805.B(15):
Discs must "have been certified for competition by the PDGA

Technical Standards Committee."

But the list of certified discs does not seem to list any mini marker discs
certified for competition.
---
Until there are certified mini marker discs, anybody carrying one
should be subject to a 2 stroke penalty for carrying an
illegal disc (802.01.E).

It is no small wonder there are no certified mini marker discs
because according to rules 805.B(4) and 802.02:

Discs used in play: "must not be less than 21 centemeters or greater
than 40 centemeters in diameter"

AND

"mini marker discs must have a diameter of between 7 and 15 centimeters"

The engineering involved in creating a mini marker disc that is simultaneously
21-40 cm AND 7-15 cm in diameter seems a wee bit challenging /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

These are legal...or they better be, as the Worlds 2005 ordered 200 of them..

Mini-marker's are considered in play?????

Jul 20 2005, 10:07 AM
Sometimes they are.

But not in disc golf.

Mini-marker's are considered in play?????

802.01.F says they are but gives them an exemption from needing a unique mark.

I beleive the rule is implying that they are not considered in play. Am I right?

slo
Jul 20 2005, 04:54 PM
They are for marking only...unless the game is Mini Golf. ;)

Jul 21 2005, 07:15 PM
I beleive the rule is implying that they are not considered in play. Am I right?

That may be the intent, but it is not the way it reads. If I say

All candy bars in the candy jar must contain nuts - except for the 3 Musketeers

I am saying 3 Musketeers are candy bars.

Now I realize I am picking nits here, and I really am not a rules Fascist. We all know what mini discs are supposed to be used for. I just feel professional rules should be clear, concise, and accurately define the way the game is to be played. When it comes to mini-marker discs, they do not.

Mini Markers are candy bars, but you can only eat the large bars in play. :)

...true, that's not in the glossary; it's just something covered elsewhere.

802.02

7cm=2,3/4 inch
15cm=5,7/8 inch
3cm=1.18 inch

any mini falling into these guidlines is considered legal for use in marking your lie.

Riddle me this, Batman: Which of the following are (and are not) legal mini-markers, and why:
<ul type="square">
A standard cigarette pack
A regulation hockey puck
An AOL install CD
A regulation MLB baseball cut in half
The plastic lid from a large fast-food soft drink
A standard sized English muffin
A Hostess Ho-Ho
A glass petrie dish
A 1/2 stick of dynamite (lit or unlit)
A Sony Discman

Does having the measure as "diameter" mean that it must be circular? I think it does.

Jul 25 2005, 04:39 PM
Diamater usually describes a line segment through the center of a circle or sphere - but not always:

View 'diameter' at dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=diameter)

PDGA technical specs do specify that discs must have a 'general saucer configuration'. It also states that they must have "a flight plate unbroken by perforations and an inner rim which exceeds five percent of the outside disk diameter" and they must be made of "non-magnetic plastic"

Neither drink cup lids, nor anodized aluminum mini's meet these criteria.

slo
Jul 25 2005, 04:51 PM
...you keep calling a mini marker disc a "disc in play", but it's only a marker. It obviously doesn't meet disc in play specs (http://pdga.com/documents/tech_standards/PDGATechStandards.pdf) [too small, for one]; it has its own:

802.02 MINI MARKER DISCS
A. Mini marker discs shall be used to mark a player's lie as required by these rules. Mini marker discs must have a diameter of between 7 and 15 centimeters and a height not exceeding 3 centimeters.

...and notice certain materials are not excluded.

HB's Higher Flyers has been distributing engraved metal mini markers as part of membership. :cool:They don't float [away]. :D

...there has been recent chat about the throwing of a mini being a callable penalty [citing the word "disc"]; perhaps that's the reason for thinking mini marker discs>>>discs in play.

If mini-markers do not have to meet the 'discs in play' criteria then do they have to be rigid or round? If not, a properly sized amorphous blob of dog do-do could be a legal mini-marker

It seems to me the rules would be less ambiguous if:
<ul type="square">
mini marker discs were not mentioned in 802.01.F
802.02 included a statement of the general shape and rigidity requirements of mini marker discs

I think the argument [last time ] was that the word "disc">>>diameter>>>round.

...I believe it was poster Rooster who mentioned he had found about 100 instances the rules could be less ambiguous. Would mentioning a mini CAN be floppy an improvement? As it stands, the criteria isn't too picky. My advise is to find a lucky one...or at least a marker you like. ;)

I have played with someone who has used a lid from a Haagen Dazs pint. I have also played with someone who has used their tin of Chewing Tobbaco.

slo
Jul 28 2005, 08:14 PM
I just went to have a look just how big 7-15 cm is...looks like a tobacco lid would just make it, and on the other end, it would be more like a quart lid, rather than a pint lid. Pretty dang lenient. :) If you insist on using an illegal mini, you're probably not trying! :D

Jul 28 2005, 08:16 PM
I have played with several people who have used the tobbaco lid also my a very funny one using a 40.

I've legally used

A lead Christmas ornament
A Bubblicious container
A hockey puck
A glass ash tray
A sterling silver ashtray circa 1905 from a New York Central System private Pullman car
A glass canning jar lid
Various bronze commemorative medalions
Various CDs
A chewing tobacco container
A small wheel
An antique Oldsmobile logo part of some kind
An antique tail light cover
Various "shrinky dink" melted plastic cups my girls made
A drinking cup lid
etc, etc

A CD is "way not too big." :)

A legal mini can be almost the length of a dollar bill in diameter!

ok I didnt know

I drew a line on a piece of paper and marked the 7cm and 15cm spots. I didn't know, either, but it sure made it easy to check a CD :D

Jul 28 2005, 10:14 PM
What was the small wheel from?

Jul 28 2005, 11:03 PM
The Olds part was the coolest mini ever! Bruce loses about 50 minis per year so it makes sense that he uses found objects for his minis. It would also make him a huge litter bug except that he picked those up off the course so its a break even in the pick up the litter, leave the mini on the ground ratio. :D

bruce_brakel
Jul 28 2005, 11:38 PM
It looked like one of those polyurethane wheels from a Razor scooter.

A roll of electrical tape
A seashell coaster
A furniture coaster
A cardboard beer coaster
Altoids tins
Icebreakers tins
A collapsible plastic cup labeled "Avandia rosiglitazone maleate"
The little bit of stump you slice off the end of a Christmas tree so that it will absorb water

Oh, I just found the sterling silver ash tray. It is Reed &amp; Barton and serially numbered 0210. Pullman used to give them away to VIPs. If you ever see me frisking myself every fifteen minutes while playing a round, I'm just checking to see if I've lost my sterling silver ash tray.

I lose about 1 disc a month and about 1 mini every 3 months totalling for about 12 lost discs a year and 4 minis.
