Started DG just 2.5 years ago. Had over 1000 Rating after first year of playing the sport and won his first PDGA Tourney in Pro Division that year. Rarely practices and spends most of his time playing and concentrating on stick golf.

Ed Burde and TicTac are good but Orrick is better if and when he decides to put his mind to it

I love my boy Schweb...but hands down, the best golfer in NC is Walt Haney...full-time job, and still top 10 in the world. Disgusting. Most fun to play with - Walt Haney. The guy never stops smilin'...whether he is getting a karma roll, or six-puttin' hole 1, both of which happened this weekend. Walt is a unique person...to have that much game, and be that nonchalant about it is impressive and inspiring. Schweb, you are a CLOSE second. But you cough to dam much.

I'd have to agree, maybe with some arguments towards Alan Schack. The guy(scott) shot 10 down(62) on goliath at mason county pump storage. First official, and also first known 10 down on that course. There have been a few 8 downs. I witnessed a 6 down on it and that was on fire. My personal best is a 10 over, but I shoot AM-2.

For those unfamiliar with 'goliath' it's a semi safari course where you play the advanced course(beast) backwards. Start at the Target for 18, play to 17's basket, etc. This leads to some Long holes(2 700 footers, quite a few in the 400 range). Some holes play out of order, and there are 6 letter holes that have their own targets. It's a tough course.

My thoughts on Top 5 in NC..

1. Walt
2. LL
3. Schweb
4. McRee
5. JJ

Cam would be second if he hadn't have stopped. Our players are just nasty. We got guys like Greg Williams (1000+), Chris Lee (990+) Mike Hofmann (990+), Mitch Sonderfan (980+) and Sjur Soleng (980+) who people always seem to forget.

Turning pro in this state is a very tough decision......

snoophaney
Jul 19 2005, 01:11 AM
One should turn Pro when they are ready. Ready, meaning when he/she feels like they have accomplished everything to themselves in that division. I don't like players bagging, but I also don't want them to quit playing golf. That's why I'm in favor of the Pro 2 division.

Robert, Thanks for the props. It shouldn't be a tough decision to turn pro in NC, unless it's a money thing. If it's a money thing, then you're in it for the wrong reason.

MTL21676
Jul 19 2005, 01:13 AM
whose Robert??

The reason I turned pro was I felt that I had done what I needed to do to feel like my am career was successfull and b/c I felt I was no longer being challenged enough in the amateur ranks.

While I have been gettin it handed to me lately in open, I slowly feel myself getting better and better, both mentally and physically

I think Worlds will clear some of this question of who's the best (in your state or elsewhere). Maybe someone on tour could give their better educated guess but overall I would say that Texas ratings are too low, California's are too high, and in North Carolina they are pretty much right on and probably the best golfers on the planet per capita.
In Texas right now we all know how good Nolan and Justin are but I would put my money on Joel Kelly against anyone in Texas at this time in a big tourney. I would also say that his rating and probably Mike Olse's should be over 1000. At Worlds it won't matter what your rating is, only your score on the course.

Since Dean and a couple of my friends from here in Birmingham compete against Brad on a regular basis (Joe Thacker and Tim Keith), and even though they are barely losing to him, only a couple strokes a weekend. They really don't have much good to say about him as a person, especially after his acceptance speech at the Hall of Fame Classic this year, where Brad only led after the last half of the final round, Both Joe and Tim were ahead of him the entire time. They talk about Brad like they do about how Cam Todd is on the course.

So I will not be rooting for Brad. Deano is a gentleman out on the course, unless he doesn't like you, and it takes a lot for him not to like you considering I almost took him out TWICE with my Teebird while warming up for a tournament on Memorial Day weekend in his home town, and he still like me.

I was making a general statement about the ratings in Texas and California, that's why I said Joel is the best in Texas in my opinion. No I don't think anyone (will likely) beat Rico from Texas.
My bet would be that Joel is going to beat some players in his division that have a better rating than he does. Just so I can be despised in California and so that we will all have something to read on this board, I will say that Joel will beat any Open Master player from California this year at Worlds. What do you bet ?

I bet Jim Oates WHOOPS Joel Kelly (I like Joel by the way)
Harold Hampton will also be in the TOP 10 at worst /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

ANY DISC I OWN... :oas a bet

Or Jim Oates and Joel Kelly could tie for 3rd and y'all could argue about it some more. :D

Speaking of the low Texas player ratings, here are some stats on Joel Kelly and Mike Olse. Joel beat or tied 8 players in his division with higher player ratings than his own, Mike beat 23 players in his division with higher player ratings than his own. NO player beat either Mike or Joel with the same or a lower rating than they have.
Nate Doss showed me that indeed Californians can play at and beyond theri ratings.

Actually, Mike Gastin #22824 from Canton is the highest ranked Amateur. He did not renew his membership. He pays the extra $5 when he has to.

Funny Guy...But if Oates hadnt been trying to make big jumps to 1st or 2nd Joel wouldnt have tied him :o

This was purely a "sideBar" to Scooter's Open rants..

I believe I won that one hands down......1st for Doss and 5th for Rico and ???? where were the Texas golfers??

Olse was your best and he wasnt even mentioned when talking about all the Texas guys who would do so well /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Ol'Scooter can chalk this up as a "Free Lesson" /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

(dated 7-22-05)
I talked about Olse before Worlds. Anyone in Austin knows he is not a 990 rated player.

He's every bit of 991. :p

Don't inflate his ego. He needs to keep working hard. Don't forget Steve, he also played 20 points or something (I think) above his rating. If only our top rated players would actually travel. :o
