Has anyone ever proposed any kind of one on one match play between these two Great Titans of Disc Golf ??
Set up a one Day Championship Tournament on a Saturday where the two square off against each other playing 36 holes in morning and 36 in afternoon . And put it on two Courses that neither have played on or are familiar with.
Purse would be 25K WINNER TAKE ALL !!
I think this would be another "feather in the cap" as far as getting maximum exposure to this great sport.
Like Ali vs Frazier or Bird vs Magic.
And honestly, I think these would be about the only two players the general public and mainstream recreational players would be interested in paying to actualy see dueling each other.
And probably the only tour players they have ever heard of other than maybe Juliana Korver.
No offense towards the other fantastic Pros buts that just reality !!
Anyway, any takers out there for potential Sponsoring of a incredible event like this???

It's been done. Maybe not exactly as you propose, but the concept of head to head between these two.
2003 USDGC. After 4 days, Schultz and Climo were tied. Went to 10 holes of sudden death. Near ace by Schultz. Amazing putts by both. Climo misses 30 footer on 11th hole by inches. Schults puts it in.
I think Schultz had something like 18 straight birdies, including the run up to the tie and the playoff.
Immortalized on video and on a special disc.
2005 USDGC, Rock Hill, SC, October 12-15. Be there! (http://usdgc.com)
that's not what he meant.. we all know what happened then. He is talking about actually making it the EVENT.. advertising it as a 1on1 versus the two and not just happenstance at the end of a tournament.
LIke Duval and Tigerwoods or bird/jordan like he said.. I think it would be pretty cool..

Personally i'd like to see all disc golf resources used to get disc golf on ESPN. Come up with the cash required to get it on, have a big purse & invite only the top pros to play. I wish Bill Gates or Trump would get hooked on disc golf :D.

It doesnt have a big enough market at this point in time for espn... just my opinion
The idea would be nice but I think a 25k dollar purse is asking a lot :)

not if the money came from ad spots for the ESPN airing. There are a lot of companies that fit the mold of the average disc golfer. Getting exposure beyond those who are AT the event is where the money is.

There is a big market in this game for shoes alone. I also think the Disc Manufactures need to step up and make some things happen.

Id say there is more of a market for disc golf than say, Ping Pong. They got what, like a table, paddles and balls?

Unfortunately there are about 80,000 people worldwide that play disc golf and about 8,000,000 people that play ping pong.
I do like the mano vs mano showdown format as a way of garnering interest and exposure in disc golf.
Ideas to make it happen:
1. Partner with two major charities like the Cancer Society, March of Dimes, Make a Wish, MDA, etc. Each disc golfer would represent a different charity. In advance of the tourney you could advertise the event as a fundraiser for charity and collect donations towards the charity. At the conclusion of the event the donations would be awarded to the charity during the awards ceremony.
2. Host the event at a scenic, but challenging (with par 4s and 5s) course that is condusive to spectators and media coverage.
3. Make sure the event is covered by multiple cameras that can cover from behind the tee, halfway down the fairway and from the greens. This is a better representation of the disc's flight path than the pathetic one camera coverage that is common to most disc golf videos.
4. Piggyback this event with another major happening within the area so there are already many discgolfers in town that would help to pad the spectator numbers.
5. The event should be held in a larger city or nearby a busy metropolitan park so as to attract spontaneous spectators.
The key to getting media coverage and thus major sponsorship is spectator interest and viewership.
Charity partnership attracts media attention and gets people involved that might not have any interest in disc golf.
You want lots of spectators in order to lure sponsors to future events. You want the best players (both in skill and professional attitude) to represent our sport well. You want excellent video coverage and professional, newbie friendly commentary to accompany the visual coverage.
With proper planning, a dedicated, coordinated team could really pull it off. With each major event drawing from the success and groundwork from previous events you could see national coverage and major sponsorship within 5 years.

This sounds like a good idea. Where would there be a large enough course in a metro populated area that would have par 4's and 5's?

The mano vs mano could be a temporary setup. Either design it from a non disc golf park, or play a safari layout from an existing dgc. It could have a couple par 3s as well among the longer par 4s and 5s.
The Little Lehigh Parkway being used for Worlds in Allentown would be a good venue. I'm sure you could put the show on just about anywhere with proper planning and prior permission.
You may want to just do a nine hole showdown, piggybacked onto a NT event the first time out and if successful try for a 18 holer another time.

For an event of this magnitude, I'm sure a course could be set up to accommodate the match regardless of where it would take place.

How about you vs. me, Walt? It'll be a fun afternoon at Cedar Hills, Zebulon or Buckhorn. Of course, you'd have to play while wearing a blindfold and your normal throwing arm tied down. Let me know. If you're too scared of getting beaten, I'll understand.

Mayor Bloomberg would love it!
The next great event at Central Park since The Gates.
660AM WFAN loves disc golf.
Eyewitness news ABC Channel 7 Loves Disc Golf
PLENTY of sponsorship opportunities
-----------------
Yeah, this could be fantasizing a little bit but maybe some big real estate Mogul or wealty Surgeon who is also a Disc Golf addict could maybe step forward and supply the 25k Purse?? To many of these type people this amount is chump change. Especially with the Housing Boom going on the past couple of years.
Personally, I am just getting into real estate and have recently knocked out my first deal and have pocketed this exact amount. Unfortunately or I guess for me fortunately I will be investing and "flipping" more houses and building on this amount.
So this money will be tied up soon!!
But maybe in 5 years I could do it. :D
And that would be simply awesome to be able to put on an event like this without the pressures of attaining regular Sponsors who want a certain rate of return.
In meantime, maybe we could keep our eyes open and look for some big backers or just regular commercial business Sponsors.
Also, I think the winner should take it all. None of this 20k to winnner and at least 5k to loser. Lets make it a fierce duel where the winner reaps it all and the loser goes away with nothing.
And you know I bet these two great competitors deep down would prefer it that way.

When X-Games rolled in there was no market. The games on TV produced the market.
Schultz vs Climo sounds like the matchup, and the pro par 72, 18 hole course at Idlewild near Cincinnati sounds like a great place to do it. The pic.s are out-of-date -- the course is far more groomed these days. New pic.s of Idlewild will soon be up at: the cincinnati disc golf website (http://http://cincinnatidiscgolf.com/courses/idlewild.htm).
But as a sideshow -- how about:
Hatfield vs. McCoy -- the Feud Continues.
"While it is well known in the disc golf community that Hatfield and McCoy put aside their historical differences and teamed up to win a doubles title -- tune in and watch as Hatfied and McCoy renew their rivalry"
I would love to see this type of event as well. I know many people compare things like X-Games or ping pong, but you have to remember how easy it is to film events like these. Filming a disc golf match requires much more money and many more people ... multiple cameras on multiple cherry pickers/scafolding just to start with ... then there is the incredibly difficult task of filming in the woods. This leads me to believe that the first tournaments to be aired will have to be on ball golf courses or on temp courses in open park land (USDGC seems to have the right idea...). It does seem like all it would take is one wealthy individual to take a chance ... I'm always thinking of former athletes. They certainly have the money and they most likely still have the desire to compete and excel in sports. Doesn't anyone's cousin know Cal Ripken or John Elway? :D
