Well, as I've been having grip issues on the course, I decided to switch to These (http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/4965112/c/44434.html) from These (http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/605486/c/9.html). I'll post a review after a round tomorrow.

Anyways, what sort of shoes do you all use? Why did you choose them?

ya, go to their website merrell shoes (http://www.merrell.com)

I use Merril ventihlators (I know, I know, spelling). The Merrel storm riders were recommended, but I figured in this dry climate I needed to stay cool rather than dry, so I went with the above mentioned.

They are great for traction, and I don't have to worry about stepping on thorny brush or cactus; however, they don't seem that comfortable to me. I am going to add some kind of insole. I think the problem is they are a tad big. The 12 was too tight, the 13 a tad lose in the fore foot area; a nice insole should correct this.

I had some sort of waterproof Merrils that I just retired, too. Functionally they were fantastic. My feet always kept dry and the traction was great on all surfaces. However, I have narrow feet and most of the shoes they made ran wide for me. I don't remember the model I ended up with but they seemed to fit in the store. After several rounds the inside part of the heel started getting torn up and now I can't wear them for more than a round without getting blisters on my heels. I tried all kinds of little products to help fix it but nothing worked. I'm guessing the fact that the heel is reenforced with some sort of hard plastic meant that it wouldn't conform to my narrow heel.

I really wish that they didn't do that because they are fantastic shoes. You just can't have narrow feet with them.

I wear a pair of Vans. Keep in mind it's never wet or slippery in Vegas. It should be a nice dry heat of 110 today.

This post may be more directed to Masters (and older), but really applies to anyone with foot, ankle or leg issues. I have pretty much gravitated to Lowa mid-duty hiking boots for disc due to all of the above. I still use my Merrell's for "light duty mall walking" and easy days in the office but no more on the course. Just too stiff for my old feet and legs. And this stiffness translates into increased trauma at every joint up the leg. Bottom line, if you have bone/joint issues listen to other folks opinions, but listen most closely to what your body is telling you. If it tells you that a particular shoe consistently causes a particular pain, stop wearing it before it becomes a permanent pain. As Garublador alluded to with his "narrow heels" ya just gotta find the shoe that works for you and s-can the rest as far as playing in them is concerned.

New Balance runners are great and the most comfortable I've found. It depends how much you play really...how fast the sole wears off one corner from dragging the foot ocassionally. I hate to spend $100+ on shoes when the wear out in the same way every time, when I can get comfy running shoes for $40 that last just as long and have great traction. If you need some left shoes I';ve got some in great shape :D

Nike ACG with watershield work great and I usually play 2 rounds a day at a 21 hole course- Circle C which is very rugged terrain.

Merrell Chameleons (http://www.merrellboot.com/catalog/gallery.asp?NavID=CNTCE)

Stretch or Ventilators...

The Stretch are great for lazy people (like me) because you don't have to tie the laces...

I bought a pair of salomon's and they fell completly apart in a month's time. They are the worst pair of shoes i have ever bought, somewhat similar to the ones shown here. I doubt I will ever by salomons again.

Jul 11 2005, 05:55 PM
My Merrel's hurt my feet, especially in the heal. Do they break in some? I remember someone telling me to get some insoles with them. But, I'm not sure that will help.

Ok, I've gotten a chance to do some field tosses, played 3 rounds, and tried jogging in em. As far as tossing in a field goes, they get good grip on dry and wet grass. During the rounds I played, I did run into an issue that they got a little too much grip on the compacted dirt on some of the lesser used tee pads. I had problems getting good rotation/follow through. On most of the fairways, or the cement launch pads they worked well. I jogged about half a mile(**** that was a long run), and my knees didn't hurt. That is a good thing.

Jul 12 2005, 01:08 AM
I will never spend one more dime with MONTRAIL cuz they are falling apart!!!! Big rips on both sides of the shoe and not waterproof at all

Waterproofness probably adversely effected by the big rips in the sides, huh, TZ? On a positive note I've heard they are very cool during hot weather. ;):D

I would have to reluctantly agree with you about the montrails. I picked up a pair last november and when santa came asking what I wanted I got another pair as I like to rotate 3 pairs of disc shoes at a time and the montrails have excellent rigid support and grip and are very light a nice combination. I played in some snow perhaps a bit crusty and got rips on one pair, towards the front on both sides of each shoe. At least I can tell the two pairs apart now. I have a pair of vasque's and they are excellent. I just picked up a pair of new balance cross trainers today too, gotta get "armed up" for the World's!
