I am new to the sport and have so far tried the shark, roc and cobra. All with mixed results, although I did throw an ace on my home course with the roc(super short hole). ;)

What midrange discs do you like to carry and why? Try to be specific about weights and the wear on the disc.

Jul 07 2005, 02:54 PM
a beat to hell dx roc used for wooded holes, and straight to right mids
an almost new 174 dx roc used for some woods holes that need to go perfectly straight or left
a new 174 Z wasp for short drives which need to go slightly left
an old but still in good shape 174 g5i demon for short drives or mids that need to go sharp left

Jul 07 2005, 03:10 PM
I currently carry 2 180+ gram E Elements for straight to turnover shots, 1 176g E Element-X and 1 173g S Element-X for straight to hyzer shots, 1 175g Demon for strong headwind and strong hyzer shots and I sometimes use my 172g beat in S Blaze for headwind shots and longer, low hyzer midrange shots. I have two Elements and two Element-X's so that I have backups. I'd really like to get into the rotation of having a new, beat and thrashed version of a midrange, but I've been focusing on other aspects of my game recently and haven't had the chance to really work that out yet. Plus, the last S Element-X I had took so long to beat in that I lost it before it got at all understable.

With the exception of the Blaze, which I also use for some longer shots too, most of the discs are fairly new. I've been finding that I'm gravitating twards Wizards for many midrange shots (up to 280') where I have a high ceiling and only really need the midranges for low ceiling shots. I'll either throw a Sabre low or throw a flex shot with a very overstable disc to get those 280'-320' holes and on the courses I play that doesn't come up much. Throwing midranges has been a weak point for me and I really should learn to throw them better.

I also found that I didn't really have the need for dedicated midrange discs until I was throwing over 300' or so. Before that there wasn't much of a gap between how far I could throw a putter and how far I threw my drivers accurately (I'd just throw them lower to get less distance). Now that I'm throwing Wizards farther, I'm struggling to find where my midranges fit in again.

3 Gators, new, mid, old for left, straight & right shots.
I bought spiders & gremlins at the same time, but like the consistency of the Gator even as they start to get old & fade.
Tried Rocs but don't like the feel of them.

2 Whippets, new & old for longer harder fades, Ss, skips, etc. (good for rollers too).
OK so they may be 'drivers', as was the Aviar & Aero in their day. but they sure can be useful.

(Weights all ~172, all Dx)

Also would add that depending upon the situation, either my Rhynos, Teebirds or other drivers might be used due to their different flight characteristics.

Doesn't matter what you throw as long as it works, and it will only work if you know how to throw it, so know what you throw.
(sorry if this sounds sappy, it just came out & sounded good (too me only?) and apologies if its already been written elsewhere before as I'm not aware of it)

All three discs you mentioned(Drone, Wasp, Demon) are great wind mids. The Drone was specifically made for wind/high power, so that'd be my choice. Choose the one that fits in your hand best.

The Gateway demon is great for the wind, but it isn't as lond as the drone. I have noticed that it's great for spike shots too!

BTW - In what area does the country does a Spider represent a good wind disc? Sorry - that seems kind of funny to someone who hails from a windy Lake Course and plays quite a few windy courses. I would expect that ppl would be using flatter and firmer molds b/c I can't keep a Spider flat even w/o wind. They are too flippy!

176 X-Wasp for straight to hyzer depending on the release.
Had a 178 1st run Z Buzz that flipped and dove into the water with a headwind  It seemed a little more stable than my wasp.

I haven't thrown a drone or demon, but have been considering buying either one of those or an MRX for a wind/flick/hyzer disc. When I try to throw the wasp as a driver, my technique isn't really sound enough to consistently keep it from flipping.

Would a max weight Super Roc fit in with the drone/demon/MRX? I have been considering going to an all Roc lineup for mids.

Edit: oh yeah, was thinking of a gator too. Do these feel similar to a Roc?

dx spiders--- different weights and levels of beatness. i even putt with these, they are an amazingly straight and controllable disc, like a cross between a roc and aviar. these are all i use up to 325 or so, unless i need the demon for a hard fade or super headwind.

BTW - In what area does the country does a Spider represent a good wind disc?

I've never thrown a spider, which is why I'm asking. The local player use them.

I have a buzz which is not good in the wind: part of the problem I imagine is that it came in lighter than I expected at 172.

I would like some advice before I buy something for the wind. I gotta ask about the spider since so many down here are using it.

On a different note, I threw my mrv today, and it flew as far as most of my drivers. I was not throwing at the disc course; plus, the wind was negligible.

First of all, I think midranges are the best weapon in the game. People who throw mids often and well are generally dangerous. I'm hoping to get there myself.

I carry:

177 S Element-X Banged up but fairly new

Forehand hyzer, straight, and slight turnover shots, 200-350'.

Backhand hyzer and straight w/left fade shots, 180-280'.

Gateway really hit the mark on the Element-X. I love this disc.

177+ Squall Worn, used constantly for maybe 1.5 years

A variety of backhand shots; some forehand turnovers, 180-325'.

Inside 200', I leave most of the work to my putters: 175 Firm Wizard, 173 Juju, 173 X-Putt'r.

Jul 11 2005, 05:01 PM
Just started throwin the Z-Glide... ... it has to be one of my farthest flying midranges, ...

An honest question here from a relative newbie -- why is it good if a midrange flies far? Isn't the point that it doesn't fly as far as a driver? Isn't a long midrange just a short driver?

I was thinking that a midrange is optimized for reliability (repeatability, forgiveness, etc.) at the expense of distance. Am I misunderstanding?

sandalman
Jul 11 2005, 05:19 PM
nope. you've got it right. but a midrange that has near-driver reach is a valuable tool... think 300-330 feet with no tailoff at the end - just dead straight. in the glide's case, think a two-step "run up", a nice slow controlled flight, AND the ability to stretch out to 300 or more when you need to. watch some of the best players throw midranges - you'll see them use mids a lot more than you might expect. always (well, usually) better to use the disc that you can throw at 85-90% and still reach the objective. many times its far better to throw a mid at 85% power than a driver at 55%.

Billy_Ho
Jul 11 2005, 05:22 PM

CryZtal Buzzz - (not sure of the weight) got rid of my 1st runs because they were too expensive to replace. This buzzz is super pretty as it is pink. I carry this disc for long range approaches that will fly straight and end left for sure
176 Super Roc - I think this disc is on its way out. I haven't thrown it in a long while
180 DX Roc - I have tried to beat it into submission but it isn't agreeing. Also might be on its way out
175 Z-Wasp Similar shots as the Buzzz, but less speed
173 Z-MRV The disc I can't seem to take out of the bag. I take it out, put it back in, take it out...I use it for long annhyzers that I want to die (for lack of a better word)
168 Champion Gator - I guess it is pretty overstable, it is getting its bag test run right now, so far good for the wind
171 Ace Run Glide - I like what this disc does so far. It always ends right or straight. Nice to know in certain lies
172 Firm Wizard - this disc single handedly replaced three discs in my bag, short forehands, stuff I don't want to blow by, annhyzers...a lot of stuff under 200 feet
175 JK Aviar X - one of the newer runs...this thing is soft, my favorite putter and short approach disc (it hates the wind though)
167 Blowfly - I use it on short hyzers and annhyzers that I don't want to roll. This thing hits the ground and gets down. I also sometimes use it for trick shots.

I think I carry too many discs. I am trying to cut back, but I keep finding great discs that I love....darn disc manufacturers coming out with new plastic! :D

new, almost new, broken-in, beat, and very beat ... [?]

a local pro (Pete Caldwell) marks his TL's with a system something like --

I new
II almost new
III broken in
IIII very beat

they are all the same weight and color, and i think he rotates a new one in every so often and adds a I onto the condition of the others and rotates the most beat one out.

I hear Climo won Worlds one year i think using all Gazelles(?) in different conditions... I like the idea and may start that kind of system with Champ and Pro Orcs.

how do you tell your Spiders apart?

I decided to go with a Z wasp. It's not as overstable as I'd hoped, but it will work.

1 Brand new max wt Z-Wasp (forehand/hyzer/wind)
1 Slightly worn 172 X-Wasp (Straight w/ fade)
1 beat DX Hawk (annhyzers)

I should be set for now. Thinking lighter d-Buzz to replace the Hawk sometime.

180 S ElementX, slightly beat - drives, straight shots w/ left fade, up to about 300ft
178 "CE" Element, new and durable - straight shots w/ any fade, a little shy of 300ft
165 S Element - beat to hell, money disc. anything that needs finesse and pinpoint accuracy
4 Wizards (2 E, 2S-172+) - anything 250ft or less, rollers with the beat S, drives with the E, and of course putts

3 Wizards all mostly med/firm and from beat, slightly used to new. I use these for most mid-range shots where height is not a factor. I sometimes slip an E wizard in the bag, but I usally wind up using the new firm one for the overstable or hyzer shots!
I have had 2 of the wizards in my bag for well over 3 years and they still fly the same.

1-S element for lower ceiling shoct of less than 250' that need to flip up and fly flat or stay turning to the right.
This disc will also hold a slight hyzer for and extremely long way at 50-60% power when thrown slightly nose up.

1 E element X for straight low ceiling shots, especially in the woods.

2 "S" blazes: We used to market this discs as a driver but it much more of a long/midrange. 1 flies dead straight 250-350, 1 is fairly new for spike hyzer and slight S-shots.
Blazes are rarely effected by the wind and are the key to most of our sponsored players mid range successes.

For those who like the E plastic. the evolution Blazes are some of the best discs we have ever made.

2 Champion Cobras
New - Straight, long hyzers up to 350
Beat - Turnover shots
Champion rhyno - Utility disc under 275 (straight, hyzer, spike hyzer, hammer, sidearm)
Q Sentinel - wind, sharp hyzers (anything the previous three don't cover)

Lots of times I'll play with three of these four discs and a putter in practice rounds sometimes even in leagues. I find that on average length course I rarely throw my drivers and my game improves more drastically with improvements in midranges than in drivers. Either way I still need to learn to putt...

S Demon -- when I must have a hard hyzer or into a strong headwind

Z Wasp -- Long approaches when I want to have some fade at the end.

Z Buzzz -- Straight/anhzyer.
