I just started throwing this disc and all I have to say is WOW. Totally not what I expected from this mold. Now I have to go get a few. ;)

you serious? that sheets been around forever. i saw stokely throw a 700 foot roller at the 98 (maybe 99) TX states on the final safari hole. he was tied going into the hole - oh did i mention the roller was his second shot? put it about 6 feet from the freakin pin. a pink stratus. iknow i went out and got me some - still have em, and still carry one beat D plastic at all times for when i need a absolutely positively must turn over shot.

stratii rule!!!

Stratus is awesome. This thread made me think of Stokely also. Speaking of Scott. Where are you? I bought video # 1 and # 2 where's # 3? When I look his name up he's not even there. Its as if he's been exhiled.

Stratus owns all at short range rolling. I can roll one about 450' in winter time when the grass is all dead. Great for that left to right flippy roller, that is a must for consistency with a short range roller.

Whats funny is I have not used it for a roller yet. I was using it on 250' heavily wooded tunnel shots. I release it just to the left of the basket (RHBH of course) and it will turn over just a tad and start zero-ing in on the basket. Its like its under a freaking remote control. The glide of the disc is just superior as well. Looks like my putters have a new friend. :o

stratus is the best turnover disc I hve used for short shots...my girl can throw one 300 feet..the z plastics are more stable but after a couple monthes the are the best...

Jul 06 2005, 05:59 PM
I have this one I was throwing. Its not candy plastic or anything. Its kinda like a dx plastic but theres no way. It would be beat to high hell if it was. Anyone know this type of plastic? Its white and looks pretty old. I think it is perfect. Although a new one will probably not fly like this one, but if it does that would be shweet!

Sounds like the Elite-X plastic to me

If it's old enough maybe it's a signature series...with no stamp?

Jul 07 2005, 07:38 PM
It has a stamp. Its like a opaque white plastic that is not DX. It is holding up really well. Looking closer at it I would say it is no more than a couple years old. It still has the line on the edge of the rim.

I threw this disc 400' yesterday just chunking it an open area. My sidewinder went 420'. Why is the heck is this disc going that far? Why is my driver only getting another 20? I think I have found my new all around disc. Waiting to get my hands on a commet before making a final decision.

N E 1? Bueller..........Bueller............Bueller....... ...anyone?

Jul 14 2005, 11:32 PM
i just threw my stratus off the top of the world in santa cruz... it flipped and carried off... way way off to the left (from a lefty backhand shot). i have no idea where it ended up. now it's back to ye olde stingray... at least for now.

have you thrown a stingray? a new DX stingray will start very similar to slightly beat in elite X stratus. a champion stingray, once beat in, will fly like a new elite X stratus. I always have a stratus or something like it in my bag. I cannot get them to go 400' though!! you punk! :)

Jul 15 2005, 03:27 PM
I have thrown the stingray and like it. They do have similar flight characteristics but the stratus has all the glide. It just floats and floats and floats and.............RHBH I let it go almost at a 45/ and it flips up straight after about 1/3 flight holds level for a bit and then slowly starts rolling over. If thrown right it will come out of the slow turn over and fade back left. I am amazed at this fun to watch flight. I got remarks like, " I have never seen any disc fly like that!" I am digging it.

better question - why is the stratus going almost as far as the drivers?

answer: it is supposed to! drivers are fast and can be annie bombed incredible distances. but in most golf situations a midrange is only 20-50 feet shorter (at most) than a driver. mids fliy slower, but as you already mentioned, have great glide characteristics. you cant annie bomb a stratus though. its not a problem if drivers only beat the stratus by 20 feet. all it means is that you are throwing the stratus correctly.

Jul 15 2005, 04:14 PM
Sweet. I was afraid that I was throwing my drivers incorrectly. I almost started reading about driving technique to see if I was doing something wrong. I thought shoot, if I can throw a mid that far then if I was driving correctly I can get a hole lot more D. Glad to hear that is not the case.

Thanks Pat!

most discs can go really far if thrown correctly... some discs just fly a little farther more often.

if my disc golf history serves me correct, i believe the first disc to officially break 600' was the lightning p-38 (now known as the #2 hookshot) in 1987. that was followed by the phenix, viper, cyclone, and x-clone for discs that i know of that had been thrown > 600' officially in the 1995 or before era. seems like people aren't impressed enough D-wise by this anymore, but i believe there has only been ~7-8 official throws or so that have ever broken 700' (christian sandstrom x 2?, ken jarvis, chris max voigt x 4?, erin hemmings).

had the stratus been released in say, 1987 it would have been considered a high speed driver :)

also of note, i believe the distance record before the release of the original eagle/aero was ~460'.

I havn't recieved my ballot yet(nor have I recieved ANYTHING in the mail from the pdga in the 3 months I've been a member, including an extra rule book I ordered when I was joining), but is there a position of PDGA Historian? I think Blake_T would be great for the spot.

heh,

i believe gregg hossfeld is the unofficial pdga historian since he has been everywhere, knows everyone, was there when it happened, and seems to remember it all.

i still consider myself new to the sport (started in 2000) and i've mainly focused on absorbing the info that i see as relevant to my place in the sport. guessing it helps that i have a pretty much photographic memory though :P
