Not that I am one, but I was wondering who were the usual contenders for Am Worlds this year.

I found Steve Lonhart while scoping through the Masters Cup results.... 980 rated, already turned down cash at an NT. Looks to be a contender.

Who else is set to blaze up the desert come August?

Last year the talk was of Boobs, JJ, and Brody Miller, all of which were in the running. Who will it be this year?

Codage` is coming on quickly, not hard to do when you play with Coda though. If he attends, I've got to put him near the top.

I think Tim Skellinger from Portland, OR will be in the top 15.

Except my arm is hurt just now,

Sniff :(

I will never be a contender for Am Worlds.

Wait, that is because I didn't play many tournaments last year, don't have the money/time to go this year, and will be moving up to Open in 2006. Unless I cash, which will be likely at least at B and C Tiers, I will not be able to go to Am Worlds.

But if I don't cash, then I will be a contender for the 2006 Am Worlds. :D(Which would be the only Am event I will play that year).

It takes Open Pro caliber play in order to finish top-10 at Am Worlds. Isn't that how it should be? The best of the second team duking it out for bragging rights? I don't have a problem with that, and I'll never be at that level.

That said, a top 10 finish at Am Worlds should be a pretty strong sign that you're ready for the first team. If you check the stats, you'll see that's how it usually goes, too. So no problem. :)

He has a good thumber and a great game. He's also serious about it because he has been heading out to Flag to scout the courses.

Barring a mid-week meltdown, he should be in the hunt (if not leading the charge) come Saturday.

Steve Lonhart from Santa Cruz (Dr, Steve that is) may very well crush.

Steve's home course is Delaveaga. 27 brutal holes. He usually plays running, with 2-3 discs? We call him "running man". Typically we'll be on about hole 8 or 9, and we'll see Steve drive by on his way to the parking lot, he usually plays through our group on hole 11 or 12.

He been around the course for a while, but a regular of tyhe club just the last few years? And I think he started tournaments this year or last?

Steve is also one of the nicest people you will come accross. He is very sharp, very motivated, and also very humble. He's been a great addition to the club and is helping us with statistics on course usage.

We really thrilled to have him around, proud to have him represent for DDGC, and we wish him the best of luck.

He'll be schooling Rhett and the rest of the field in Tahoe this weekend :D

Thanks for the very kind words, John. Playing at DeLa means a lot to me, and I enjoy all the folks up there, and especially the hard-working DDGC members like you!!

I think California will have a very good showing in the Adv. Men division. I know of several excellent NorCal players planning to attend, including:
Dave Haning
George Ross
Jonah Schmidt
and Dan Corbett (among others)
I know from personal experience about each of these guys--when hot, they are among the best.

and from SoCal--definitely Phil Brathewaite. I've been in a tournament with him and he's awesome! Super long distance and accurate.

Among players I have not played against, certainly it looks like Matt Hall and Steve Mills are hot players right now. Especially Matt--he seems very focused on winning, and is on the right track to do so.

But as Dave Vincent points out, it's a long tournament, and anything can happen. And ratings are, in my opinion, not a good indicator of actual skill and ability.

My goal is top 20. I hope I have the opportunity to meet many of you. As Steady Ed said, the most fun wins! :)

Cheers,
Steve Lonhart

Jul 11 2005, 05:02 PM
No worries Steve, you deserve them.

Eric we had a blast at the Memorial that year, those are the kinds of rounds that you remember for a long time. I have to say that California is going to tear it up at Worlds! I met SoCal ripper Dirty D in Hawai and that kid has every shot in the book. I still think of those Maui mountains when I miss a putt, calms me down in a good way. NorCal is going to light it up! I've been getting schooled from these guys every week - James Wood, Desmon Knibbs, Dave Haning, Steve Lonhart, the Napa Crush Crew, Chris Robinson (his home town course is 5000ft elevation), and of course George Ross . If I had to put my money on one person in particular it would be him, he has been playin good golf for a last couple years. Whoever winds am worlds is the world's biggest bagger

Jul 18 2005, 09:40 AM
I'd say the Worlds Master Pro winner is the biggest bagger since he'll likely have a rating 25-40 points higher than the Advanced Worlds winner.

Gordo actually throws a "tomahawk" as well as a forehand roller as well as back hand, as well as being the fastest player in the country. :D

No but for real, the man has an array of shots!!!
