I am curious if anyone is like me ?? Been playing for 9 months now very intensely and just have never
"gotten into" this carrying the Bag around the shoulder or back thing. I just carry about 7 or 8 Discs in my hand and this is very comfortable to me. And I think after much researching that 8 Discs is sufficient enough for most people to be competitive in a given Round.

Has there ever been a notable Pro who didn't use a Disc carrying bag and just carried them in their hands ??

And anyone else out there for that matter ??

Well first of all I would think most tournament players carry an absurd amount of discs :) I know I carry about 12 or more and there are only 5 molds though, used to have 20+ discs and about 10 molds yikes!!!.

Benefits of the bag include not having to carry 10+ discs in my hand because then you have to set them down and pick them up blah blah, when it rains they are just out there getting wet where my bag can cover up the discs, having a bag with quadshocks is almost like not even having the back on my back, the back also serves purpose for carrying many supplies, drinks, medication, umbrella, places to put extra clothing, scorecards, pencils, mini's etc.

There are just too many benefits to have a bag :) But I mean if you are the casual player I see no reason to buy a bag.

Yeah, thats the only draw back but if your meticolous with a towell you can keep Discs dry even on wet grass.

As far as drinks , food, etc......well I hydrate my body 20 minutes before a round. And I am also a long distance runner and can go extremely long periods without liquid, food etc...
so this stuff is irrelevant to me during a round. Even in the hottest weather I get along fine with just me and my discs in hand. Having all that other stuff is just one more thing to worry about. And does not help me play more effectively or shoot a lower score.

In all due respect, I have never been a casual player since day one.

Average in last nine months is about 8 rounds a week. Consisitently, week after week after week. And Putting Practice average about 30 minutes a day.
And Driving practice on football field I do 2 days a week 1 hr at a time.

I just don't like the feel of a Bag .
And plus to me it just doesn't look cool at all :D
And yes I know ,I know if it helps your game who cares what it looks like !
But mainly I feel more physically comfortable just carrying them in hands !!

And don't plan to change whatsoever

Yes...Crazy John Brooks.

Jun 24 2005, 01:26 AM

If looking cool is important to you, maybe you should take up cricket and wear a skirt!

Actually, his water jug was his stool! He'd carry 2 Vipers, Gazelle, Roc, and an Aviar. All KC Pro discs he carried had KC's signature marked out with his over it!

When have disc golfers been cool? I am not trying to put myself or any of us down, but come on. We play frisbee in the park, and some of us do it for a LIVING! (Which I wish I could afford to do).

Jun 24 2005, 12:09 PM
I would also bet that most of us played D&D as well.

No, that would only be you. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Well, I've been playing for less than a year. Seen from nothing, walmart grocery bag, cooler, plastic milk crate, old backpack (not gateway's), military bags, wallaby on a cart, girlfriend trailing behind you carying your discs (my favorite), and everything in between. Whatever works for you.

I'd like to invite you to play in the Live Oak Summer Open (in San Antonio) next month. I'm not sure where you're from, but if you think you can get through a summer round at Live Oak (or Dripping Springs, or Victoria, or Tom Bass...) without needing to carry and drink a substantial amount of water, insect repellant, sun screen, towels (not for the disc, but to wipe the sweat), etc., then you are either insane or not human.

For casual rounds or single-round minis, I can see and understand carrying just a few disc and foregoing the bag...

But not having a bag and the means to carry additional gear puts you at a competitive disadvantage in longer rounds/tournaments.

I never play disc golf with out water!! In the summer months i carry a 1/2 gallon insulated water cooler in my bag with ice water. I will usually drink all of it during a round!! :DIt is ridiculous and dangerous not to drink water in the summer months down here!! I have seen many people DNF for exactly this reason!!!

Ron Russell played an A tier in Lewisville with 3 discs, a stool, and a towel.

Probably neither. Its called running in many Marathons and 10k's in 95+ degree heat and humidity over a period of many years

Walking at a brisk pace in Disc Golf even in 100 degrees at San Antonio or anywhere , does not even remotely compare on a strenous level to running a Marathon in 3 hours in 90 degree weather. Or even 70 degree weather for that matter. Done with water only at the beginning of the race.

I guess Crazy John Brooks might have a thing or two to say about that !!!

My first worlds in Detroit 1992, Ken Climo just smoked the competition. He had I think a Viper, 3 rocs, and an Aviar in one hand, and a towel in the other.

Man that is cool as hale !!
The Champ messing with the minds of his competition . I think there is something that is truly pyshcological about that.

I mean there is nothing cooler and more pschologically demoralizing (to competitors) than going to a DG park with a few Discs in hand and a towell in the other and whipping up on a guy who has a pull cart with 25 Discs , jug of water, sitting stool, umbrella, first aid, insect repellant ,etc..etc...

Gotta love it :D

I just saved up for few months to buy a Revolution bag, which I ordered on Friday. Yes, you could play with minimal gear.

You can also smoke a fine cigar without drinking 12-year old scotch, but why would you want to?

Marty Peters from SE Michigan carries a Z-Flick, Z-Buzzz, and 2 Pro challengers, also a towel and a small water. He is an amazing player and I've never seen him with a bag.
