I have been a stick Golfer for over 25 yrs now. Since I was a young boy. I have caught the Disc Golf bug this last year and am going full force ahead with it.
I still love stick golf. I don't play it regularly because of my conversion to the "real game of golf " /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
But I keep up with it regularly in the news and on TV.
My question is who are some of the PDGA counterparts to the players on the PGA ??
1.Lets take Driving: Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods come to mind when it comes to pure raw power and accuracy.
Who would be the Nicklaus and Woods on the PDGA Tour??
2. Long Approach shots: My man Tom Watson the best 180yd. to 220yd. striker of the ball ever.
Who would be the Tom watson on the PDGA Tour ??
3.Short game around the green: Phil Mickelson and Jose Maria Ozabal. How about on the PDGA Tour ??
4.Best all around Putter ever: Ben Crenshaw, hands down.
How about the PDGA guys ??
5.Best Pressure Putter ever: Of course the Golden Bear !!
Who is Nicklause's equivalent of the best pressure Putter on the PDGA ?
6.Best ever escape artist from trouble and greatest up and down player: Seve Ballesteros. I have never seen another human being (in stick or disc golf) with his ability for shot making and his uncanny creativity and vision around the course and particularly around the green. He was and is the sickest Magician you could ever imagine. And he would have made an excellent Disc Golfer !!
Who is the Ballesteros on the PDGA ??
7.Well this next one people might not want to reply to but here it goes anyway . Who is the biggest choker under big time pressure?? The Shark ,Gregory Norman, is unanimous on the PGA. Any one brave enough to comment on who may be the Shark on the PDGA ??
8.And finally the best and most mechanically sound swing: Nick Faldo, the indestructible robot. Who has perfect robot like "throw" mechanics on the PDGA Tour ??

I'd say Barry and Kenny pretty much are the answer to every question

MTL may have been a little hasty in reading each remark. I doubt it if either of those two would be considered chokers.
And also I doubt it from what I have learned in my short Disc career that Climo or Schultz would be considered the big Power Drivers (#1)on the PDGA tour .
Yeah, I sometimes get carried away and get a little long winded when I posts things :)
Makes for harder reading thats for sure!!!

He's not really on tour other than the Euro tour, but Marcus Kallstrom is definatly the biggest arm out there on the course. Sure Sandstrom can pump them out there on the range, but Kallstrom takes lines no one else even gets to consider...the man has sick golf distance.

This question points up one of the key differences between BG and DG- we don't have the capacity to capture and track details like BG so that some of these rankings would be possible. BG tracks number of putts per round, fairways hit, greens in regulation, sand saves, etc. Some of our road warriors are the only ones who have seen enough of these players to make an assessment and usually they are more concerned about their own games and only play in one group at a time and can't watch all of the top players like a sports commentator.
One of the failings in our course designs is the inability to truly test a player's skills with a variety of shots similar to BG. Players can get to the top in our sport by mastering a limited number of throws. Good putting and a strong backhand throw will take you far. Top players on most courses can cash without ever throwing a roller, thumber or forehand, even though several do.
I would think Rico and Lissaman might be added to the putting list.

that's hilarious because if you ask Walt, he doesn't agree and thinks his form is not all that great to be emulated. the man's just been playing SO FREAKING LONG that it's all just natural to him. he is great for trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with your form though :o

There probably aren't many courses like Seneca Creek and Tinicum around the country, but to my knowledge no one has ever won the Open division in an A-Tier or SuperTour PDGA event at these courses who didn't throw a good roller.

I agree. And I think some of the MADC top players have better overall skills than many 1000+ players. I would put money that MADC players or team would do well if we ever have top level SkillShot competitions.

Actually Chuck in the last couple of decades it has gotten also that way for BG Courses here in the states!! The variety of shots has been limited in BG and its called Target Golf.
Just go to The Players Championship at Ponte Vedra every Spring and you will see what I mean.
Mostly a power Drive with a second shot with a 8 or 9 iron straight at the flag. Not much rough to contend with. Not much imigination you have to utilize. And a few sand traps here and there.
Whereas in European BG you have more a variety of shots as they have more Links Courses. Requiring not just target shots at the flag but also bump and runs from the fairways into the greens. And a whole lot of deep fun rough to play out of .Oh and don't forget the 15ft high sand potholes to contend with at Courses like St. Andrews.
Much more imigination and shotmakng is required on these European BG Courses.
Incidentally, Ballesteros is a European from Spain.

It's certainly gotten easier for BG but those top players still have to play sand traps well to contend. And you never see a pro teeing off with a putter in BG.

But they would tee off with a 9 Iron. Maybe not on a championship caliber course, but if they are just playing a local country club for practice they might.
I do not think shot similarities as in comparing disc selection to club selection is fair. It is the major difference in BG and DG. There is a greater margin of error in BG, look at how wide the fairways are compared to the ball and how wide ours are compared to the disc. Not saying BG is easier, it is quite the opposite. It is just easier to throw a disc accurate. That is why we challenge disc golfers with short tight holes, that may force a player to use a putter off the tee box. It is not a bad design or handicap at all.
