I'm interested in hearing about discs that don't meet PDGA specs, from freak moldings of approved discs to vintage discs that became outlawed when the rules were revised.

Are you currently playing with a disc that doesn't meet PDGA specs? Do you not care because you're not playing tourneys or your course doesn't have ped traffic? Obviously, you might not want to be too specific about the disc if you're planning to use it in a tourney...

I got this thread idea from a few incidences:

1) I saw a gut playing with a Whizbo the other day. Big fastback thingy in hideous rainbow rubber (wouldn't say it was plastic) that *had* to have weighed nearly 300g.

2) Always wondered if you could use Wham-O Heavyweights in a lid tourney. Wham-O claims they're all *at least* 200g, putting them over the limit for the PDGA.

3) I have a disc in my bag that was factory marked as being 175g. I just recently weighed it and found it was 177g, putting it overweight for this mold (at least for the submitted diameter). But, this run of plastic may have increased the diameter, too, which I haven't measured, maybe bringing it back in line.

Jes curious...

I know a local guy that had a DX Roc a year or two ago that when he weighed it, it was 185g's. He had already beaten it into submission and wondered why it did not turn as much has his other Rocs. It is now long gone.

But I would LOVE a 185g Roc. Imagine how hard you can crank that bad boy. But that is why they put the rule in place.

I used to occasionally use a 200g Zephyr... Completely legal, but I would always get a few people agressively questioning its legality. Fun and games. :D

I think the scales at innova and discraft are stuck at 175 lol

I think its more like theyd rather mark it 175 and sell it than scrap it. More than half my discs are over what is marked when I weighed them. I wonder if tournaments will ever require weighing of discs before hand?

My husband has several outlaws. The first one is that dimpled one from eons ago. I don't even remember who made it. That thing is stiff as a board! I could see it breaking into a million pieces if it hit a tree on a cold day.

We got a couple of Hemp "Puff Daddys" from Chris Himming back in 2001. That thing is super light but flys dead straight.

Flazer too sharp of an edge.
First run F15 Eagle, it shrunk too heavy vs. diameter

What ....................Tell me more about these.

Are these the cloth or plastic ones ?

I forget what the mold was supposed to be for sure. The plastic has some percentage of a hemp derived plastic in it. He called it the "Puff Daddy" because when the disc came out of the mold, all of the rims popped out and were convex instead of concave.

They were light (under 150 g) and made of a "loose me" dark green color plastic.

Lil' Abner's are really hard plastic and domey.

I have an old Cobra with the weight worn off, but in the right light/angle you can still barely see the marks from where someone wrote the weight. I believe it says 179, can anyone verify if it really would be that weight? Also how accurate would it be to say take it to the post office and have them weigh it with their digital scale?

Pretty darn accurate. You think the post office wouldn't have a calibrated scale?? They probably only weigh in ounces, so you will have to convert to grams.

I work in a lab and have checked the weight of some discs. They are pretty much dead on. I admit I haven't taken a bunch of max weight disc and weighed them. I don't throw max weight.

As for the Puff Daddy, it is pretty domey.

I believe the name of this disc was "The Dimple" and that it was made by Dynasty Discs. The one I have has a stamp of a crazy looking guy and the words "The Grateful Dude."

The Puff Daddy Hemp was a Gateway Demon. Sometimes the discs puffed up and got real stiff out of the mold but were a great straight flyer. The hemps were a very limited run.

That's what I had seen !!!!! The disc was out of hemp cloth.
It seemed more durable than cotton.

Down here in OZ, there are locally made x-clone ripoffs, The Redback, which reportedly (as seen in an x-ray) have a metal ring inside.
Illegal enough?

Yes. But cool.

Dont forget the big Wham-O mold 80, D and E!
In the hands of the legendary Steady Ed it could reach up to over 230grams, the DGA Midnight Flyers you know ! Used to throw one myself back in 80-81 but it was only 218 ;) .

And talking of Destiny Discs the "Rock n roller", I have seen weights up to almost 260grams

Is the Midnight Flyer still legal??

Jun 21 2005, 09:35 PM
anything over 200 g is illegal. Doesn't matter what mold or diameter, if it's over 200 it's DQ
