I'm going to be heading down to the Austin City Limits music fest in September and I'd like to play a couple of the nicer "must-play" courses along the way.
So what courses should I try to hit up that are not too far off of I-35?
TIA

On your way through Texas, make sure and stop in Waco and play both courses (the Beast and Old Cameron) at Cameron Park...only minutes off I-35.
Then, when you get into Austin, make sure you save some time to play Wimberley, Dripping Springs, and Dave Moody's Red Rock courses.

After Austin, if the courses still exist. Try stopping by San Saba. You would have to contact John Houck and make a reservation, but it would be worth it if your making a trip out of it.

Where is San Saba in relation to Austin?
Any courses in Oklahoma off of I35 worth playing?
San Saba is NW of Austin. It's the nothern most highlighted city on this map.

Kansas:
Wichita: Herman Hill Park
Oklahoma:
Oklahoma City: Dolese Youth Park
Texas:
Dallas Area: Veteran's Park (Ft. Worth), Lewisville, Crowley, & Bear Creek (Grapevine)
Waco: Cameron East
Austin Area: Pease Park (Austin), Lago Vista, Wimberly, Red Rock
There are many, many more to hit, especially in Texas. I haven't played nearly everything. These that I listed are all top notch for sure! They are generally pretty close to I-35.

Circle C if you're not afraid of having a course show you EXACTLY who's boss.
Twin Parks in Dripping Springs for two diverse courses plus...ummm i dunno... 60" TV, ping pong table, X box, poker room. PS2, showers, beautiful pool, NEVER ANY WAIT, course delivery of food and beer, badass staff, campgrounds for $10 and rooms for rent for considerably more...stuff like that. (I don't work there)

That's the "Country Club" course I heard about? 2 courses north of 2 courses in Wimberly? Sweet! Too bad I live 400 miles away.

Dont forget about Rivery Park in Georgetown, TX the absolute closest course off of I-35 in the Austin area. make sure to bring mosquito repellant or you will have the most miserable round of your life.

An hour into TX, I-35 splits...if you take the West split...(I-35w), play Z-Boaz in Fort Worth, only 10 minutes off of the highway. If you take the East split, play Cedar Hill. There are two 18 hole courses in one park at Cedar Hill....also only a few minutes off of I-35e.

After playing those you should come on down to Live Oak, only about an hour south of Austin. Live Oak City park is not far off I35, about 5 minutes. There are about 36 holes there now I think. Its worth it.

All good suggestions so far. Why would anybody ever stray from the Waterworks course in KC? (people...this is one of the best courses in the world! Every Texan should go play it)
San Saba is by reservation only and will be closed through June & most of July.
In keeping close to I 35 - In far N. Dallas I'd play Lewisville Lake then stop in Waco for the "Beast". Pease Park in Austin is the next fun place to play. I'd then get humbled at Circle C before heading down South to play the Live Oak courses. Each of these courses are within 5 minutes of the interstate and are quite different from one another.
Have a great trip!

circle c.
Thank you all for the great suggestions so far! Sounds like Texas has great courses no matter what direction you go in. I'm really looking forward to playing some of these.
As far as Waterworks it is an amazing park, but sometimes you just have to venture out a bit :D

It depends on the time line and where you plan to stop.
Coming into DFW you have to decide 35E or 35W. 35E gets you to Lake Lewisville and Cedar Hill (two courses where it's easier to play them as a single 36 hole course) and take most of an afternoon, or 35W which goes between Z-Boaz and Veteran's park which would take a little less time.
After that Cameron East and (old Cameron if you have time) in Waco. South of Waco, you have to depend on other advisors.

mayo aint fool'n.
bring lots of water, some bug spray and if you play circle c, post here when you will be playing. it's a lot easier to follow with someone who has played the course before.

Thanks for the offer! I really appreciate that.
About the heat I understand it's still pretty toasty in September correct?
90 degrees is the average high for September. But come on September 1st and you'll have a good chance of seeing 100.

If I were you I would not waste any time and I would haul butt to Austin. It has so many great courses and with all of the live music there is more than enough to do when you are done playing. I just spent two days there and I wish I had a week.
Hit Pease Park to check out the local scene in Austin, then definitely play Circle R in Wimberly (I played the meadow course, very sweet) and Cicle C (Sunday 10AM round with locals to show you the way...this course will rip a new backside in you. Stay on the Fairways...US Open type design with trouble trouble trouble). Many more to choose from, but I did not have a chance to check them out. I heard the course in Gonzales was nice and Moody's as well...I wish I had had more time!!). DD
