this tournament has been shrinking steadily....I remember the good ole days of 100+ Open players and now we are going to be lucky to get 50 :(

The West coast guys used to come until they realized it wasn't worth it finacially.

Let Animal's message (as unprofessionally worded as it is) serve as official notice to amateurs.

If you go to the KCWO tournament expecting a handsome player's package, world class disc golf courses, and challenging competition, your expectations will be handsomely rewarded.

If you go to this tournament expecting a fat payout, you may be sorely disappointed. But if for some reason, you still have questions or issues about the payout, please personally consult the tournament director. DO NOT come onto the PDGA Discussion board after the event and disparage the payout, tournament director John Chapman, or KCFDC President Jack Lowe.

Here's a quote after last year's tournament from Jack that pretty much sums it up: (http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Board=Kansas City Flying Disc Club&Number=196847&Searchpage=0&Main=195396&Search =true&#Post196847)

if you want a bigger payout, then MOVE UP, playing AM is not about winning the most discs, it is about playing for competition and the fun of the game, if you are that worried about the payout, you are no longer an AM, you are a sandbagger.

jackinkc
Jun 06 2005, 12:30 PM
Dont worry Bri, someone that post anonymously is really nothing new.

Overall the events across the PDGA schedule are down close to 20% in attendance (wonder if over 500 events this year alone affect that number?!?!), this compounded with the hard earned dollar and having to make tough choices on which courses and towns to play, espeically when you have Des Moines the following week. For the traveling pro it works great, for the local PDGA player it becomes choices, and Des Moines is still riding the Wave from the WOrlds last year, they did a great job up there didn't they? I plan on playing in Des Moines, and having a blast here as well.

I have been getting a lot of calls over the last few days, so I bet we will still have a pretty good sized Open field. Pete I think that last year we had 49 Open players, I expect us to have at least the same if not more. We had 27 Masters, and 12 Women. I hope that we have more women!

On the am side, well perceptions have always been what they are in KC, and I could talk 'til I am blue in the face, but we had 65 Adv, and 22 Adv Masters, if we have the same great, if not, plenty of people are missing some great courses and a well run event.

The perception issue still bothers me, but hey people obviously in the past did not pay attention to what the PDGA has done in terms of Advance payout. We pay DEEPER, and give MORE %% back than most other events out there, it has been that way in KC always, come for a good time, and get some cool friends, oh yeah play GREAT courses (even if it is not your favorit KC Course it will still be better than most disc golf courses out there). If you are worried about the payout as an AM, you are not thinking like an AM, never have and should move up. All that has been done has always been by the PDGA book, and always will. More TDs in the past ignored the standards that the PDGA wanted to have people follow, we choose to follow it.

It never ceases to amaze me that people who don't run events are the first complain and bash, and those that run them know first hand how hard the effort is, and that most of the time your work goes unappreciated, and you do it for free. This is part of the reason that TD's leave our sport, players perception is in some warped vision of Shangri-La, we are still primarily playing for each others money, how far can you spread it out boys and girls?

None to worry though, we are hard at work for the ~150 players that will make the trip to KC, play some KILLER courses, have some good times, and just enjoy the company of some of the best disc golfer hospitality in the country.

There is a reason our club is currently over 210 members, because we love the sport, and we love the players coming to town. You guys make it fun to watch and be a part of, and that is why we work hard at keeping the courses good. The whining complaining people, and I have said it before, I'll say it again, can stay home and play locals, improve your attitude and maybe your game will improve as well!
:)

Over all, I hate reading or writing in here, because a few noneducated comments from the toothless gallery really burn me up, but with the fine people that play the game for its real value, challenge of courses, event smoothness, and overall excellent disc golf time know to be here!

We look forward to opneing our arms to all players, if you have any comments to make to me, feel free to call me directly, I am never hiding behind an anonymous name or post, and I speak CLEARLY, and PATIENTLY, what is on my mind. (I even admit when I am wrong!)

For the rest of your reading pleasure, take the time to visit our town, you will never be dissapointed with a disc golf trip to KC.

The KCWO has been about giving back something to all players, not giving the winners (in the AM divisions) as much as possible. This is not news, and I expect the trend to continue. It has always been a good tournament and a great time.

That's what happens when someone uses inappropriate language in the subject of a thread - which subsequently appears in the main index and thus is quite visible.

Someone who would do that, and this may be a stretch but maybe not, seems like the same kind of person who would break the limb off a tree 'cause it was in the way of a long putt.

McCoy just wants more money in his purse but he doesnt want to have to beat more players so if the JVers as HIS GREATNESS ( note severe sarcasm on HIS GREATNESS ) calls us would be pading the pro purse by playing trophy only. Its easy to say Trophy only is the way to go for ams when your making over 20 Grand a year as a pro.

Its ok Kev I know its lonley up there on cloud 9 where you put yourself but stay out of conversations about divisions other then your own

james_mccaine
Jun 06 2005, 08:16 PM
Trophy only does not equate to padding the pro purse. It is entirely conceivable that ams played for trophies only, got a players pack equal to the value of their entry, and none of that money went to the open purse. I have no idea how they do it at this tourney, but I'll make a deal: if you stop assuming that trophy-only is merely a money grab by open players, I'll stop assuming that merch payouts are a money grab by those those unwilling to face tougher competition.

If I am playing advanced and have a rating of 920...why the hell would I move up to pro and get my ***** handed to me??? There's not much incentive to play a tourney then is there? As a 920 rated player I stand a chance of cashing in Advanced, and if I just so happen to finish in the top 3, then I would expect to get a decent amount of stash in return. Now I know you will respond with..."That leaves the door open for the sandbaggers." But...any player with any integrity will play in their prospective division.

I am an avid Am Ball Golfer and play in ton's of tourney's and we get nice trophies for placing, but we also get tons of free stuff too for placing high.

I know for a fact that the payout is why a bunch of guys from where I am at stopped going to the KCWO.

Tourney's are not just about competition, they are also about getting rewarded for good play...and a couple of disc's and a few bucks isn't what I would call a just reward.

the_kid
Jun 06 2005, 08:35 PM
Play it for the competition and experience and that will outway anything you could get for payout. I played a C teir this weekend with eight guys in ADV and I only won $72 for winning which is week but oh well that is what happens when they payout 5 of the 8 players instead of three.

By the way is it 500 or 700 that you can now accept without turning pro in Ball Golf???

I know for a fact that the payout is why a bunch of guys from where I am at stopped going to the KCWO. That the ONLY reason I have heard for people not returning to play a second time.

Dont worry though. Anytime anyone comes up with a legitimate argument against the powers that be they just get angry and call you a [I'm a potty-mouth!] and say your wrong even when they know your right. Either that or they just ignore you because they know they cant say anything to back up their side of the argument

If anyone has ever competed in other big amateur evenst you know that you play for competition and to be at the top to be number 1, not to win plastic ot tennis raquets, I played tennis for 15 year s as an amtateur and never once complained when I didn't recieve a free racquet after winning a tournament, you play to be the best or strive to be the best and enjoy the game not the payout, you want to play for plastic move up win money and buy plastic. Alot of good ams I know play win plastic and then sell it right away, so spend the money that we put into the plastic we give them into nice players packages and sweet trophies. And also for winners of Adv. can recieve entry fees into the same tournamnet next year for Pro and get a free entry fee or something that would be a lot cooler then give them plastic and let's them see what the pros play like and what they need to do if they want to play for money.

The real beauty of it is that it takes those advanced players who are stacking plastic to the ceilings and eliminating the profit they are making by reselling the discs that they win. Some of these guys are "Semi" pros that are playing in the Am fields, to have an easier time at winning...If there is no $500 worth of merch to win then alot of these guys won't even play which in return makes it more fair for the real AM players.

Hope to see you this weekend. I imagine there will be a few more trees to avoid than at Old Settlers. Hope you are liking your new place up North. I sent you a PM with my cell number. Wish you were playing this weekend.

Hitman, you've got a PM. I'll try to hook up with you guys on Friday for a practice round. I might come out on Sunday to watch the finals. Depends on how much grass I have to mow! If I could have gotten in 10 practice rounds I would've played but it just wasn't in the cards. Actually the cards took up so much time last weekend is a big part of why I didn't get in any practice rounds! :D

Folks,

Registration is coming along nicely. We will be limiting the total pro field to 90 players. We currently have 79 total pros. We opened up more space to let more amateurs in, so we can accomodate up to 180 ams. If you want to register, you can do it one of two ways:

1. Call us at 888-237-6884, and we can take your entry over the phone with a credit card.

2. You can also register at www.discgolfworld.com (http://www.discgolfworld.com) with a credit card.

If you have any questions, please email me at john@discgolfworld.com or call 888-237-6884 and ask for John or Rick. We'll be happy to answer any and all questions by phone or email, but we will not be actively montoring this message board, so please call or email, and don't post any official questions here, as we likely won't be posting any official answers, at least not very often.

Thanks,

John Chapman

For you sports fans, sitting at your computers on Sunday afternoon, watching the hole-by-hole numbers for the final nine of the 2005 KC Wide Open (presuming that the weather and technology are cooperating), below are the distances of the final nine holes. The double mando on the final hole is only about 75-80 feet from the tee and is about 12-15 feet wide. Might it make a difference if there is a close battle among the 4 men and top 3 women who will be playing in one group?

About today, the Wyco Gold course held most of the pros' interest with a wide range of scores on hole #13 (3 to 11) and was somewhat reminiscent of the 1/4 mile hole at Winthrop, but about 350 feet shorter. Open division leader ChrisSprague missed a 10-footer on #13, to mar an almost-perfect round.

Here are those distances. Enjoy.

Final 9 for Top 4 Open and Top 3 Women-Water Works Park
#1 508
#7T to #10 325 Aprox
#8 531
#9 286
#10 350
#11 309
#12 296
#13 from top of hill 526 (temp tee)
#18 201 double mando

his ranking all the way back to 2001 shows he won cash in either Masters or Pro every year since then! It would be hard to belive that he has never accepted the cash in the past 5 years of tourney play.

What is going on with this???

Jun 12 2005, 01:44 PM
Pros can enter Am this year if their rating is under 955. His is 952. I and several others including women pros have done so and also cashed this year in our native pro divisions. Big whoop. We sometimes play within our rating level in larger semi-pro (Am) divisions when ours is small or doesn't exist.

Jun 12 2005, 01:48 PM
yeah...big whoop to you. let's get someone's take on this that is not partial to being able to play in both the open and am divisions.

pro's dropping to play in am divisions defeats the purpose of a rating system doesn't it???

The purpose of the rating system is to get players of similar skill competing together. That's what's happening. That's what the Mid-Nationals is all about. If it's not apparent, most "pros" are not pros and most "ams" are not ams in disc golf. If their ratings are similar, they're just playing for metal versus plastic coins.

then i think if an am steps up and plays pro one weekend and wins cash then they should not lose their am status.....if we hook up the people that are border line then everyone should get the same option

scores are available by clicking on the "PDGA Tour" link at the top of the page and then selecting the tournament you want to see scores for...

Jun 12 2005, 02:49 PM
We're not talking about mid-nationals here...

Talking about a guy who's rating barely drops below the magic 955 number playing his first advanced tournament in at least 4 years (history doesn't go back before 2001).

He plays open/masters all these years and thanks to the famously inexact rating system (doubling those 890 rounds sure helps) he gets a chance to try his hand at advanced first time after the latest ratings update.

Don't worry KC, the commish isn't going to be taken down by some bagger taking advantage of the (flawed) system.

I had not been able to play Adv because I cashed at a tournament in 1999, then with the new ratings guidlines, I was able to play 2 Advance tournaments this spring. I got 2nd place both times. (I would have played in Waco this weekend if i could, but my rating went up after a few rounds of playing advanced)

so what is the big deal.

You have an OK Masters player with an Advance rating wanting to play in a bigger division at a tournament that has a history of not paying out very well in Masters (or Adv for that matter)

What I want to see is a cap on the Adv division ratings. If you are rated at or above, say 980, you should not be able to compete in advance any more.

BTW, check out the Waco tournament this weekend. The leader after the first day cashed on Pro weekend last month.

Jun 12 2005, 06:07 PM

How freakin weak of a victory that will be if he can hold on to his lead. "Hey, I cashed at a National Tour event in Waco and now I am playing the Am "B tier" weekend in Advanced". OH, how proud he should be

Bryan..I don't know if Collier took the cash or not, but he is a prime example...screw the ratings system..this is about knowing you are playing above an Average ADV for the last 5 years.

Gary did take the cash at the NT and DID win today in Advance.

Gary plays a lot of tournaments. He is a good player that is rated 950. That makes him an Advance player in my book.

Everybody I know, including myself was gunning for the MAN Tom B. whom may I add, shot hot -3 for the old men 1st round Swope to fly into 2nd place. Nobody even had a hope against the first place guy. Great shooting Tom. Hopefully you might change your mind about going to DM. Those courses are beauties!!

RonSTL, MO

Who, the guy who one, he is a local that only plays this tournament and maybe some small local events. If he were to ever take cash in an open division, he would no longer be able to play Adv Masters, but the way the rules are written right now, he is ok to play in Adv Masters till he cashes.

There was one other player I found that actually has cashed that played Adv Masters, but his rating is currently 911, that is exactly where he should have been playing.

Noticed the great Matt Hall didn't win. Or finish on the top card. Top rated AM by around 20 pts too.

I agree but I see what I see. All is good, but I feel I know Pro and Adv. I am close to Pro, but just close.

KANSAS and the Mighty MO was lucky us OKIE pros had to play those other courses cuzz if we would have bbeen playing Rosedale and Swope like the JVers, it possibly could have been an OKIE SWEEP in all divisions. I know CODA would have played better on those two tracks, and I personally hated Wyco. I didn't adapt very well to that track. Why is there not a basket around that pond at Wyco? IT WOULD BE A BEAUTIFUL HOLE! Instead of using the natural water hazzard there were fake roped off bunkers that were OB ???? What the F___ ???? very irritating.

REAL NATURAL HAZZARDS are HELLA COOL! Fake yellow rope hazards are LAME-OOO! I even birdied that stooooopid hole twice, but it was still irritating to see people have to take strokes for landing in grass.

OKIES are getting closer to dominating the WORLD!

BEEEEEEEEEEELIEVE IT! :D

MC thats really 8 out of the top 10 were OKIES, Ron is in the process of moving to OKIEland. Props to 15year old Justin Bougher from Tulsa for beating down the Am field.

Way to represent OKIES!!!! :D

those scores were just after three rounds...

its called attention to detail ;)

no it was not a case of being a dumbazz and not reading the scores RIGHT (BETTER PROFESSOR NIX?). there were 4 rounds posted and it said ron won and jared got 4th. not my fault someone loaded the wrong scores....i stand behind my trash talk though....ams should be able to take cash if the pros can! :D

attention to detail....smart [I'm a potty-mouth!]!

write is when you write something

right is when you are correct, or the opposite of left.

you were not right when you wrote write.

I only point this out because you are whining about your attention to detail.
