Zach,

I sure hope you still plan on attending. I have you on my list of people to look for on Friday night at the meeting. George Wilson was in fact reserved for a family reunion and therefore unavailable to us. Nevertheless, we have brought Ferrettie Baugo Creek County Park into the mix. It is located between Ox Bow and Rum Village on the St. Joe/Elkhart County line and will flow nice for golfers travelling between rounds.

Jason as long as you're running the tournament, I'll always be there. There should be a great turn out this year now that the National tour is on this side of the country. This tournament was one of the best tournaments I played in last year and that's allot coming from a guy how played in thirteen tournaments last year. If you say the new course is a good course then I believe you, and I'll just have to play GW before or after the tournament.
This event should with out a doubt be the same as last year if not better.

Hey Jason

Whats the new park like??? I will still be attending even though my favorite course has been removed from the line up. I just want to know what Im getting myself into before I come down there because I was planning on coming down friday nite since I had played all the courses but now it looks like I maybe have to come down earlier to practice this new course. Hopefully it is somewhat like George Wilson so that the tournament still has a lot of variety to the courses but even if its not ill still be there.

See you down there.

Jason,
I presume you will be accepting entry fees for the Michiana this weekend at Pillage. I will be coming up along with the usual crew from my neck of the woods - I will try to get those guys to pay ahead of time. I think Greg is coming, so be sure to bring the doll for him!!

Looks like the MDGC busy season gets started this month. They are hosting 1 sanctioned tournament a month from June through November (2 C-tiers, 3 B-tiers and an A-tier). Impressive!! I will likely see you for all of them.

How many women do you expect to be at the tournament? Which courses will they be playing?

Baugo is a fun technical woodsy course. Diana and I played it for the unsanctioned Fall Doubles last October. You won't have a lot of opportunities to open up and bomb, but there are a couple. Mostly, it is deuce or die in the woods, with a few holes where par is a good score. All of the skillz you need at Ferretti-Baugo you will develop playing Cass-Benton.

Edited to add: Shoot, you've got all the skillz you will ever need. Now you just need some confidence and a steady head game.

Jun 03 2005, 02:33 AM
John,

Yes, we will accept registrations for the Michiana Open at Pillage The Village on Saturday. Glad to hear you and your crew will attend this weekend and also plan to spend the holiday weekend with us at the Michiana Open. The Tippe Crew is always welcome.

June is the beginning of our busy season with so many sanctioned events over the next five months but we couldn't do it without dedicated club members and our friends who travel to play with us.

With so many tournament options every weekend we want to make it worth the tournament golfer's time as we strive to offer fun and organized events.

I had fun at the Pillage. Goby's two-ace day was something I'll probably never witness again. Both times he said, "I think I'll just go straight at it this time." Goby: go straight at all of them!

Rum Village is a good course in longs. It is deuce or die for the advanced men and pros, but it is still a good course with a lot of elevation changes and several holes that are a challenging three.

It especially got fun in the third round when I ran out of arms and was trying to find someway I could still throw a disc. I'm is going to hurt tomorrow. Wait, it is tomorrow. I'm going to hurt later this morning.

Kira won prizes in advanced women for the first time. Kelsey could have played advanced women and she would have won by 26 throws, [I think. If it was only 16, I was tired, but I thought it was 26.] She enjoyed competing against the rec men.

Thanks to the MDGC crew for running this event. Play the Michiana.

Jun 05 2005, 10:14 PM
Bruce,

Thanks for coming down to play Pillage The Village. It was a treat to have you and the girls. They played exceptionally well.

Rum Village is looking better than it ever has. A core group of our club members have worked hard to beautify the course. The tee signs have all been redone so that the distances and layout are accurate. Hats off to Fuzzy, Bob, Scott and Andrew to name a few.

Sure there are duces at RV but no one should be deceived. RV will play slightly longer than any of our other courses at the Michiana Open. While we had a two ten-down rounds that was out of 192 combined player rounds for the day. As I skim over the scores, I noticed that one of the most common scores for the day was four down in the pros. Many of the ams shot just as well.

michiana open is my all time favorite tournament (besides worlds) and has a perfect mix of courses.. Baugo which is a short, woodsy deuce or die course then rum village which is a really nice not-to-easy but not extremely tough course and then Oxbow is extremely difficult... plus the payouts are AWESOME

Dont be so modest Goby.....

Not only did he ace 7 he aced hole 4 too! The real kicker for hole 7 was the fact it was his divisions CTP as well. :p

Hats off to the individuals who ran the Pillage; Jason, Doug, Robyn, Josh and others. :)

In addition to the aces on Saturday by Goby, we were witness to hole 1 being aced on Sunday by none other than Mike Randolph. Unbeknownst to us at the time, hes a 1025 rated pro golfer who happened to be in town, from CO, visiting his fiancee. We almost beat him, it came down to a 3 hole play off with the fourth hole being the CTP. He got 2 feet from the pin while mine was 4 feet....oh well...maybe next time!

Ferrettie Baugo Creek DGC will be a new addition to the Michiana Open this year. Advanced Amateur Men will play two rounds at FBC with all other divisions playing one round at the course.

There are only five holes on the course 300 feet or longer and while many of the shorter holes have thick woods on either side of the fairway, the course will play easier than Ox Bow. The driving lines are easily recognizable and their are definate birdie opportunities on many holes. All tees at FBC are a dirt/mulch mixture. Plan accordingly.

Six down would be a very good score for an advanced amateur tournament player.

The most challenging holes will be 7, 8, 10 and 11. Hole seven has a split fairway closer to the basket. Hole 8 will be one of the most difficult holes as you will need to place your drive in a landing area and then choose one of two fairways to approach the basket. If your drive is off liine you will almost certainly take a four or better. Hole 10 is atop the sledding hill and is very similar to hole 18 at George Wilson. Hole 11 will rival hole 8 in difficulty. Your drive must shoot through a low ceiling off of an elevated tee and then turn left toward a large open landing area as you prepare your approach shot toward the basket.

The distances for each hole are as follows:

1 - 220
2- 185
3- 230
4 - 246
5 - 175
6 - 225
7- 300
8 - 600
9 - 225
10 - 445
11 - 435
12 - 440
13 - 210
14 - 155
15 - 270
16 - 280
17 - 245
18 - 245

Total distance 5131

See you there,

Jason Samuel

I presume Open will be playing Ox Bow twice? Do you have a tentative schedule? Having missed the Turkey Shootout, I haven't played Ox Bow since last year's Michiana. Any modifications or changes? We will be in town early on Friday and probably head straight to Ox Bow.

Good job in getting a more central host hotel - that will greatly reduce the time required to get out to Goshen.

Thanks for all of your hard work.

Hey John,

Played Ox Bow last night for our weekly best shot. According to Jason it seems the Open players will in fact play Ox Bow twice. I was also told the rounds played there will only use 18 of the 22 holes. Makes it easier to calculate round ratings and scores since the other courses only have 18 baskets. There have been a few changes to a few holes out there so getting to play it Friday may be of help, however, isnt the player's meeting Friday night at the Marriot? I have to work Friday so I will not have a chance to attend the meeting.

Just some FYI.

Final Nine will be at Rum Village. The layout will be announced prior to tee off.

On another note I want to clarify the flight schedules. I made an error earlier. Advanced Men will play two rounds at RUM VILLAGE not Baugo as I had posted earlier. Sorry for the confusion.

In an effort to lesson travel and save gas money for tournament players, all entrants will play the same course twice on Saturday.

Flight A - Open Men and Open Women
Flight B - Advanced Amateur Men
Flight C - Open Masters and all other divisions

Flight A will play Ox Bow on Saturday followed by Baugo and Rum Village on Sunday.

Flight B will play Rum Village on Saturday followed by Ox Bow and Baugo on Sunday.

Flight C will play Baugo on Saturday followed by Rum Village and Ox Bow on Sunday.

More info to come..........

Jun 19 2005, 12:25 AM
All golfers will play four rounds of 18 holes each; two rounds each day. The early rounds on Saturday and Sunday will tee off at 9AM with the afternoon rounds scheduled for 1 PM tee offs.

Courses will be open for warm up each morning. Tournament participants and their support staff will be able to enter Ox Bow and Rum Village at 7AM each day. Ferrettie Baugo Creek will be open at 8AM. No one is permitted in any of the parks overnight.

Jun 19 2005, 12:42 AM
OX BOW

Ox Bow will play much the same as last year with a few new improvements. Hole 9 (8 in the tournament layout) which was a 200 foot slightly turning shot has now been lengthened by about sixty feet with the basket left of its previous placement by about 100 feet. For the right handed golfer, the tee shot is a simple backhand hyzer through an opening in the tree line.

Hole 15 (the platform tee to those who are famliar with the course) has had the basket moved straight back 80 feet behind its original placement. The basket is heavily guarded by mature and young trees alike but the hole still offers adequate putting area for accurate tee shots.

As was the case last year, the standard layout of holes 6 and 7 have been combined to make one hole. The same is true for original holes 12 and 13 as they too have been combined to make one hole. Hole 18 will again play around to the basket for Hole D.

Club members and park employees have worked hard in recent weeks to improve the layout and playability of the holes. Returning players will notice more defined routes to the baskets.

Thankfully, mosquitoes have not been a problem this year and bug spray hasn't been the topic of discussion at club events but Ox Bow still has patches of poison ivy on many of the holes. Please plan accordingly.

Jun 21 2005, 12:10 PM
Flight A - Open Men and Open Women
Flight B - Advanced Amateur Men
Flight C - Open Masters and all other divisions

So I'm guessing that Amateur Men (Not advanced) falls in to Flight C?

Also, did my registration make it there in time to get the discount? If not I'll pay the extra $10 when I get up there if that's okay.

YES!!! The sick, sadistic Samuel setup is SWEET!!! I really like those double-ups, makes it a true thinking man's course. I'm curious about 15 though. I was telling some TN boys at Peoria that if you don't have a direct look at the basket, you're trying to figure out how to bounce one in off a tree. This definitely peaked their interest. Although trying to get through those trees probably isn't going to be much easier! I'm looking forward to it.

BTW, get some sleep, Jason!! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

What kind of a course is "Baugo"?

I'm already super jacked up about this tourny... I've never played an A-tier AND I'm moving up to AM2 for it, so I get kinda twitchy just thinking about it. This is gonna rock! I want to play NOW!

oxalate
Jun 22 2005, 12:57 PM
Tafe,
I made it up to South Bend this past weekend and Ox Bow is looking good. Even though the basket is longer on hole #15, it is not much more difficult. Make it past the guard trees for the old basket location and you are putting for duece. Of course you have to throw a little harder which may affect some folks due to the unusual teepad.

Baugo is a course that is going to frustrate a number of golfers. Fairly short with many dueces possible, but you can be severely punished for getting off of the fairway (even more so than Ox Bow!!). After two rounds at Ox Bow and one round at Baugo, Rum Village is going to feel as wide open as Wilson. Leave the big guns at home and bring your finesse game.

Jun 22 2005, 01:08 PM
Thanks for the heads up! I tend to play better on the tighter, technical courses, so two rounds for my division at this course will probably be to my benefit. My home course is wiiiiide open, so I'll work on my mid-range game, create some obstacles for myself...

Jun 23 2005, 07:32 PM
Okay, I was just looking at the pre-registration list (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=4666) and I have some questions:

1. There's a Rec. division? All I saw on the registration form was "Amateur" which (as far as I have seen) is like Intermediate. I would have signed up for Rec. given the option. Did I miss something?

2. Propogators: Will everyone be playing from all of the same tees? I'm wondering because the pre-reg list looks pretty empty and I really want my rounds to be counted. Heck, I'll move up to Advanced if I have to.

3. How many people of each division need to register for the division to exist? I see only one in rec. and three in Intermediate (and judging by the ratings so far there isn't a whole lot of difference) What happens if there aren't enough? Would the Int. and Rec. divisions combine?

I don't want to make it sound like I have a problem with any of this, because I don't, I'm just very confused. I'm looking forward to this tourny very much no matter what division I play in, but I really want to try to get my head around what's going on (hazard of letting rookies like me in :) )

Thanks!

Jun 24 2005, 03:16 PM
Doug,

You have good questions.

Don't get too excited about the pre reg list. Historically the list is 24-48 hours behind what has actually been received. In addition, the bulk of pre registrations are sent the week leading up to the event and even more players sign up Friday night.

We will hold divisional play for any PDGA recognized division that has a minimum of four competitors registered for the tournament. If you want to move down to a lower division you may do so provided your rating is within the established range for that division.

We will not turn anyone away from the tournament so long as they have been registered by Friday night. There is NO SATURDAY REGISTRATION. However, we do reserve the right to combine divisions where applicable.

All disc golfer will play the same tees for the tournament.

Tafe,
I knew I wasn't going to be traveling outside of Indiana too much this year to play, so I have been playing Open in the summer series.

After finishing a few strokes out of the cash in my first two events, I finally put together a good event at the Circus City Open in Peru. In the 3 round event, I was on the lead card with Vitale and Blakely for the second and third rounds. I finished tied for 4th with Chilcote and we split $500. I had already made up my mind that I would accept cash at any point (figuring $25 last cash to be the most likely event!!). Needless to say, $250 for my first sanctioned cash felt pretty good.

See you in about a week!

Jun 24 2005, 03:42 PM

Thanks for the reply! At what point is it too late to let you know if I want to move down or not? I'm really thinking hard about staying in AM2 because I think it would be good experience, but if two dozen 914 rated players show up, I'm not sure it would be a good idea.

Congrats to ya!

(Now I only need about 150 more Indiana AMs to go pro and I have a shot at qualifying for AM Nationals :) )

Jun 25 2005, 01:31 AM
Doug,

We can work out the details Friday night. I wouldn't worry too much about a bunch of 914 rated golfers playing AM2, it's my experience after having run nearly 20 sanctioned events over the past few years that golfers with that high of a rating will play advanced. In fact, many with even lower ratings will still opt to play at the advanced level.

It's important that you feel good about where you are in relation to your rating and that you have fun regardless of how your scores compare to others in your division. No matter in which division you compete, it will ultimately boil down to a one on one match up of you against the course.

While this is only a guess, I would tend to think that AM2 is right for you, especially if you have already played a sanctioned event. Historically speaking, we have never had enough Novice/Recreational golfers register to field that division at the Michiana Open.

Tournament Update - Final Nine

The J Bird Discs Final Nine Winners Take All Best Shot will be held at Rum Village Park. The final nine set up will mix a combination of tournament and safari holes.

The first round of golf played at Ox Bow will be used to determine the automatic qualifiers for the event. Last year Matt Blakely shot a course record six down (48) for the lowest score on the Ox Bow tournament layout. Incidently, Keith Warren shot five down twice.

The top four lowest scores will automatically qualify for the event. All ties will be broken prior to the start of the drawing for the final nine. The four qualifiers will randomly draw for their partners once the CTP for the Discraft Chainstar is complete.

Open Men and Women will play Ox Bow twice but only their score from their first round will count toward qualification. This is done to ensure fairness for the Open Master golfers who will only have one opportunity to play Ox Bow.

I'm just giving him a hard time for winning two years running. I have absolutely nothing against him. If he plays Adv. again, I hope to beat him but, whatever. I'm not playing against the other golfers on course. I'm playing against myself. If I think I played my best, I don't care what my placing is.
Besides, now that I'm full-time in college, I'm just going to be happy to have a weekend without homework. Besides I get to play some sweet courses with a bunch of fun people. I've already won without throwing a shot!
See you in a week.

Jun 27 2005, 03:12 PM
Since one of my goals is to get my rating up above 875 this year, and since the last 8 rounds count double now, shooting 875+ every round at the Michiana would definitely help my cause (because I have a feeling that my current rounds are going to be enough to do the trick on their own).

What score on the three courses we're playing do you think will be an 875+?

I know there are lots of factors involved, I'm just looking for a ballpark to shoot for, lets think positive and assume good weather with very little wind.

Jun 28 2005, 02:28 AM
Doug,

In an effort to give you and other golfers an idea of how scores will translate into ratings I can offer the following information from last year:

At Ox Bow the course record for the 18 hole Michiana Open layout (5601' measured) is 48, shot by Matt Blakely. This round rated at 1043. Par (54) rated out at 986 and for a player wanting to shoot for a rating of 875+ will need to post a 65 (11 over, 883) or better.

There were 158 tournament rounds shot at Ox Bow last year. Of those only 24 (15%) were par or better. Twenty-two of those players were from the Open Men's Division. Only Andrew Back, who won Open Master and Tony Ganger, winner in Intermediate, shot under par. The best in Advanced Men was 55, by division winner, Matt Marckese.

Pete Wyngaard and Larry LaBond posted the course record at Rum Village (5931' measured) last year, shooting 45 (1030 rating). Par (54) rated at 928 and the 875+ rating starts at 57 (879 rating).

Seventy-nine percent of the Open Men shot par or better at Rum Village last year as compared to only 63% of Advanced Men. Of the 36 Intermediate rounds shot at Rum Village only 7 were under par (19%).

We have never hosted a PDGA sanctioned event at Baugo and therefore do not have any rated rounds to use as benchmarks for your preparation. However, I would speculate that Baugo (5131' measured) will certainly play easier than Ox Bow and slightly more difficult than Rum Village. Baugo is shorter but tighter and has natural tee pads. A lot will depend on the individual strengths of a golfer. Oh, one other thing about the courses, scores and ratings ... putt and approach ... need I say more? Hit those 12 footers, they will be tough to get back this weekend. Trust me.

I hope this helped you and other golfers who will be making their first trip to South Bend this weekend.

Jun 28 2005, 02:58 AM
A word about the 8PM players meeting Friday night at the host hotel, Courtyard by Marriott in Mishawaka.

Every year we are asked, "How "mandatory" is the meeting?" Let me put it this way ... If you have not registered you will need to be at the hotel sometime Friday night. There will be no Saturday sign ups. All player's packages will be distributed on Friday night. Participants will also receive their tournament program which details the weekend schedule of events, course rules, flight schedules, driving directions and other tournament specific information. Players will also have the opportunity to renew PDGA memberships and sign up for ace fund, 50/50 CTP, the throw for the Discraft Chainstar and $1,000 winners take all best shot.

If you cannot make the meeting on Friday night but you have already preregistered I suggest you enlist a trusted friend to pick up your program and player package. We will not be distributing packages throughout the weekend.

There will be no meetings at any of the courses prior to the start of any round. It will be soley your responsibility to know where you play your first round. You only need to go to the tournament pavillion to find your assigned starting hole and be ready to tee off at 9AM Saturday morning.

Tournament staff will be on hand at the host hotel beginning at 6PM on Friday night to handle registrations, check in and distribute player packages. We will suspend operation at 8PM for the meeting. Once the meeting has concluded we will again take registrations and handle other tournament business. We will be available at the hotel until 11PM to handle last minute arrivals.

We will do our best to accommodate all interested players. If you are on the fence as to whether or not you should attend based on availibilty, grab your bag, gas up the car and get to South Bend Friday night.

The past two years we have had fifty percent of the field register on Friday. We expect the same again this year. IT IS UNLIKELY THAT THE TOURNAMENT WILL FILL. We run three courses for many reasons. One is to make room for you and 215 other golfers and another is to create an environment with smooth flowing and enjoyable rounds.

Should you have special circumstances that affect your arrival and/or participation I suggest you contact us very soon so we can be made aware of your situation and see if there is a solution that will make it possible for you to take part in the tournament.

Thanks for the heads up on the players meetings and the info on the course records and ratings. This will easily be my biggest tournament ever so from a rookie perspective you're making it really easy for me and I'm very much looking forward to coming up to the SB this weekend!

Yeah, the Michiana Open is already rearing signs of a quality event. The courses we checked out yesterday (Rum Village and OxBow) are already mowed, mulched and very nicely marked with directional arrows and OB paint.
Unfortunately, many of our PDGA National Tour events are not this organized in the days leading up to the event.
Really looking forward to the weekend.
Great job Jason and Crew.

Jason,
It will not be a problem for my Uncle Roy to sign me up for the event will it? I do not get off of work until 7:30 on Friday so I will miss the players meeting.

Hey everyone, as it turns out I'm having to move to St. Louis with a quickness, so I'm having to go look at apartments this weekend. I am super [I'm a potty-mouth!] that I won't be able to play in the Michiana this year, but I hope that all of you have a great time, and I think in the long run this new job will allow me to play a lot more disc golf, so it's not entirely a bad thing :)

I wish all of you great shooting! Somebody hit a tree for me!

I wish I could play this weekend, it was a great tournament last year. However, I have to go to my brothers wedding, hopefully it will be a one time thing and I won't have to use that excuse again :D

I'll be going there next year for sure. What's with the 973 bagger in first in Advance? I see he has all 1st place so far this year. Can we say master bagger? Just kidding. Ride while you can still, after this year he won't be.

Standings through first two rounds are posted at the PDGA website and host hotel. Copies of standings and tournament payout will be posted at each of the three courses on Sunday.

Payout:

Open Men - 10 spots
Open Master - 4 spots
Open Women - 2 spots

Advanced Men - 22 spots
Advanced Master - 4 spots
Advanced Women - 2 spots
Intermediate Men - 5 spots
Recreational Men - 3 spots
Recreational Women - 1 spot
Junior Boys - 2 spots

CONGRATULATIONS to David Kociuba - TWO ACES on Saturday at Rum Village. WOW! Who is this guy from Illinois?

The Open Men & Women have had their chance to qualify for the "J Bird Discs $1,000 Winners-Take-All Final Nine Best Shot" following round play at Ox Bow Saturday. The four lowest (first round) scores from all open divisions will automatically qualify for the showcase final nine. As of Saturday night the first round lowest scores at Ox Bow:
Matt Orum 49
Barry Schultz 49
Mike Raley 50
Matthew Blakely 53
Garrett Guthrie 53
Eric Tracy 53

The Open Masters Division has yet to shoot Ox Bow, which they will do on Sunday afternoon. Should one or more of them shoot 52 or better, Blakely, Guthrie and Tracy will be eliminated from automatic qualification. All ties for the four autiomatic spots will be broken prior to the competion.

A little history lesson here ... Barry won this special showcase event in 2003 and Mike Raley is hoping to qualify for the second consecutive year. While Matt Blakely holds the course record (-6), that round, ironically, was shot during his second go at the course last year and he missed the best shot qualification. Matt is still alive for another chance at the big payout.

I wanted to take a moment to thank those of you who chose to play disc golf with us this weekend in South Bend. With the holiday weekend and two B Tier events within 400 miles choices have to be made. As always, it's very rewarding to see many of the same faces at our events and we consider it a privilege when disc golfers venture to our events for the first time.

Congratulations to Barry Schultz on his open win, his first at the Michiana. Des Reading's first visit was a success as she claimed the women's open title while hubby Jay "Yeti" Reading got back on the cash train with a strong third place finish and he also combined with Matt Orum, who finished behind Barry in open, to win the $1,000 winner take all final nine best shot.

Thanks to our tournament staff and sponsors. Without thier help the event would not have been possible.

Please feel free to offer your perspective on the event. We want to know what you liked and appreciated as well as ideas on what changes or improvements can make the event an even more enjoyable experience for you. You feedback is important to us. You can reply to the forum or email me directly.

Thanks,
