Hey this is Steve, Samuel Crawford Park is approved. I am usually out there every evening from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm working alone, it's been fun, but alot of work. I hope you golfers out there really know what's going on & join up with the Crawford Club, registered as a non-profit organization. Any questions or volunteers, please e-mail or call me @ (972) 681-5145.

Steve, thanks for the 2nd message. I did not get it until a few minuets ago (got home from work at 12:30 and went back this morning at 7:30 and just got home to pack and drive to Tenn)
Don't worry about it, I will get over it (my wife already erased it so I can't even hear it again)
I know you are putting yourself under a lot of pressure to get this course in, don't worry, we will help you.
I will be back in Texas next Thursday night, but work all weekend. I will try to make it out there one night or weekend day next week, I can get your phone number here.
BTW, we made 263 pizzas this morning (over $1500 in sales :D)
Well I have to get out of here, already an hour behind schedule. Just wanted to answer your message.

Wednesday afternoon we will be out again.
For all of those not going to Waco this weekend, Please try to make it out Sunday. We are really not that far from being to set the 9 baskets on the lower course. 3-4 big crew work days, and all that will remain is getting the weeds mowed.
The back 9 should only take a few big work days since the underbrush is generally less dense up top.

the good news is hole 1 is planted, concrete and all in the ground. it's there i help put it there myself. :Dthis is a really good hole. 350 to 380 ft.straight ahead the basket is on a slope but you can see it from the box. kinda of a tunnel shot.

Thursday will work for me. I'll check with Steve today.
let me know what I need to bring :D
This is Steve Wallace. There were some inappropriate comments made and actions taken by members of the DDGA today at the Wednesday Mini at BB. There appears to be some reluctance in the club to support the use of the EBR baskets to install the Samuel Crawford course as quickly as possible. I will continue to work at S. Crawford park on a daily basis to get it prepared for baskets, and work with the DDGA to obtain permission to install whatever baskets are available as soon as the sleeves are ready.
DDGA needs to give up the baskets they ripped out of the ground from Elgin B two years ago & put in storage. They are the property of the Parks & Recreations. When Crawford was approved, we were told Flagpole Hill was denied. So what's the hold up? Don't tell me to shut-up, I want those baskets in the ground as soon as possible and so does the Parks & Recreations at Samuel Crawford Park. If people really want a nice park to play now, lets hear about it. Thank you, Saw.

Jun 13 2005, 01:26 PM
Troy, all you will need to bring is some muscle and plenty of water. I've got gloves and tools.
Any information on the current status of the EBR baskets you can get would be of use also. The last thing I heard was that they were available for installation in S. Crawford. Do we need to start raising funds for baskets ?

Jun 13 2005, 03:21 PM
All, I spoke to Dirk this weekend and we agreed that if we don't get anything positive on FlagPole by July 4 the baskets go to Crawford.
I wish I lived on the B.B. side of town so that I could help add a positive function/image for Dallas Disc Golf. I put a tremendous amount of time, effort, blood and money into the club, mini's, newsletter, book keeping, city meetings and both courses. I hate to see the club being bashed even if I am not directly involved anymore.
There really is no need for negativity here. Dirk and I love the idea of a park going into Crawford, but keep in mind that, with our limited time due to jobs, we have been working for FlagPole Hill a couple of years now and at a time earlier this year it looked like it would happen soon. So, it was a little difficult to let go of the baskets.
We should be finding out in the next couple of weeks a yes/no on FlagPole.

Do we need to start raising funds for baskets ?
What type of baskets?
The question really is if we got baskets from a company that gives a discount the more you get. That means we could order baskets as the money becomes available.

Jun 13 2005, 04:40 PM
Thanks for the information Danny. I know how difficult it is to let it something like that go. I guess that's the cause for tensions right now. Both sides of this have been working at getting a course in for several years and neither side wants to see a course sitting there with no baskets.
I don't want to see any course that is approved sitting empty. We need to have a show of support for S. Crawford to convince the parks department that it was a good decision to approve the course and that there is adequate support in the area for a course to be a viable use of the property.
The course can be ready for baskets by July with just a few good workdays. I'll be out around 6:00 PM Wednesday and Thursday, and Sunday morning around 9:00 AM.

let's just hope they don't hear about the skirmish at b.b, or both courses may just disappear.
Thanks to Scott Grimes & Curry North, a lot was accomplished out at Crawford today. See you Wednesday.
SAW
Thanks Danny for your words of wisdom. I had also spoken with Dirk a few weeks back and we came to pretty much the same conclusion about the baskets. This whole affair has escalated way out of proportion. I am still not 100% convinced that the baskets are the property of P&R but out of necessity I feel that we should just let it be and get on with the process of new course development. I like the idea of having a course at Flagpole Hill because of the exposure it would give to DG in general. However, Crawford park also has a very strong appeal simply because of the caliber of course it will become. Either way DG in general will benefit.

what safety issues?
hole #1 throwing along the parking lot, #18 throwing across the pond.

Jun 15 2005, 02:29 AM
On hole 1 it was finding a way to prevent bad shots from finding the parking lot. Steve decided to drop the hole and use the long basket position for the long tee for hole 2 (which now becomes hole 1). The sleeve that's in the ground will be used coming from the other direction.
Hole 18 was a beautiful hole, but the only safe shots on the hole were around the right side of the lake over the sidewalk, or a hyzer over the top landing hard near the picnic table. It looks like hole 17 will get lengthened with a pin position near 18's old tee position. Walk across the sidewalk and use what was 10's fairway going back toward the parking lot. Steve was already looking at doing these holes, and from a safety point of view it removes all of the common use areas from dangerous positions. There still needs to be some design work to replace the lost hole, and make three fairways around 9's fairway, but Steve says he already has the new holes worked out.
This will put 1 & 10 leaving the parking lot, and 9 & 18 coming into the parking lot. Since the eventual layout will have hole 10 being the starting hole on the top course, and hole 9 the finishing hole of the bottom course, this will also work well with the future expansion to two complete 18 hole courses.
Thanks Gary, very well put & could have not said it better myself! The new hole #1 is a real signature hole. It is twice as nice.

I won't be able to make it Sunday after all, I've got to carry the emergency pager, and they don't allow 30+ minute response times.
Just a quick summary.
We cut in Hole 1 Blue, found Hole 1 White (minimal clearing needed), and need about 3 bushes cut out of Hole 1 Red.
We cut in Hole 2 Blue, and completed Hole 2 White. Need to locate Hole 2 Red.
Hole 3 just needs a little trimming on the edges for all 4 tees.
Hole 4 needs to have the trees groomed (limbed up) along the fairway and around the green.
Hole 5 needs the bushes in the fairway trimmed and the pin location cut in.
Hole 6 needs the trees in the fairway groomed and the white tee cut in.
Hole 7 needs to have the fairway mowed and some old fallen logs cleared.
Hole 8 needs to cut in from start to finish.
Hole 9 needs to have bushes cleared from the fairway.

The course is going in slowly, but I like it that way. There are alot of things to see & changes are being made daily. There are not alot of people coming out to make a difference, when the course is in, I will see you then.
Thanks to Gary Duke & Frank Dorsett, they are helping me to accomplish what I could not have done myself.
Peace out.

Jun 23 2005, 05:50 PM
Sorry, that looks a little negative now that I read over it again. I meant that the course was progressing. The holes are coming together very well. The pace is allowing for some tweaking of the design as the course is going in and all of the changes have been positive and some of them fairly dramatic. The changes to holes 1, 2, 7, and 8 make them much better holes than what was originally planned.
The changes to 9, 10, and 18 improve the flow of the initial 18 hole course and more importantly it will help the flow of the start and finish areas of the two 18 hole courses when they are completed.
It is not a bad thing that it is going slowly, I just would like to see a little more involvement from those that will be reaping the benefits of the course once it is installed.

Thanks Josh and Bryan (Natalie and Raven as well) for helping with those vines on 9. It may not look like much, but that was a lot of work and is much appreciated.
First thing this morning I saw Dirk Snow and Danny Waldron in the parking lot bearing baskets. We have baskets, and the front 9 will be going in the ground in a few weeks. We have to get the rest of the front 9 ready for play, sleeves planted, and lock collars and pipes put on the baskets we have.
Scott Cook offered to mow the areas around 1 and 2 after the city chips or moves the piles that we have stacked and we clear the area of fallen limbs and large sitcks/bottles/trash.
After the front 9 are in, we will be having workday/minis with a discount entry into the mini for those that participate in the workday. There will still be 27 holes to clear, and 18 baskets to buy once the front 9 are ready for play. The back 9 will probably go in 2-3 holes at a time as the holes are ready for play.
I'll be unable to get out there next week, so my next work day will be Wednesday July 6th. Hope to see a few more people out there.
I will be back out their monday morning to clear what I can at hole nine I was thinking the piles we made today need to be moved up the hill so we can clear the other two tee boxes and finish up with the bule. This hole is going to be a challenge to say the least its uphill dogleg right around 400 im guessing the lines you guys have created are awesome.

The front 9 holes are almost ready for baskets, and instead of waiting for all 18 to be ready, the front 9 will be installed when the holes are ready.
With the front 9 installed, we can start holding Minis (using the Blue and White tees for 18 looks). As the back 9 get finished, the baskets will be added.
As soon as the front and back 9 are installed, we will start on the remaining 9 for the south course, then the remaining 9 for the north course. the front 9 will become part of the south course, the back 9 will become part of the north course.

There is still a lot of little things that have to get done before the course is ready to play, and some of those have to wait until the sleeves are planted.

Well, 1, 2, and 3 look fairly different than they did a couple of weeks ago.
4, 5, & 7 don't need much of a change.
6, 8, & 9 are all over half done.
That's what is left for the front nine to be ready.
See you on Sunday Josh.

Cedar Hill took quite a bit of time as well. The main difference is manpower. At Cedar Hill the few days I was out there, there were crews of 20+ people trying to finish before the Big Show. And it was Winter. In our case, there are usually three people there for about 3 hour stretches. Instead of basically getting one hole cut-in in a day, we are having to spend about 3 work days on the initial cut-in of each hole. That's a week and a half, then another couple of days on clean up and adjustments. That's another week.
So, at 2 and a half weeks per hole at best, I think it is going rather well. If we could get 5-6 people per work day, it would go much quicker.
SAW it was nice meeting you today in garland, hope you had a great round!
tomorrow i have to work until 4ish, but ill make it out there as soon as possible ill be giving you a call when i get off.
lets see if we can get a large group out there

I'll be out there again this Thursday, one last pin location needs to be cleared, and we will try to get the sleeves planted. Two fairways left to clean up and then we can start setting baskets. Hopefully this weekend as well.
Once the front 9 is in the ground, we can start mini's using the White/Blue Tees.

Tomorrow, I work open to close so I am out again. (same schedule as next weekend, day shift on Saturday and open to close on Sunday)
at this rate it will be a long time before I can make it that way again.

We walked the back side again today, there were about 3 holes that hadn't been nailed down back there, and we pretty much nailed them down so that the holes are interesting, and the walks are pretty short. Good flow and it brings you right up over the creek so you can watch the turtles bask in the sun.
Took a few pictures today, so I can get holes 1 and 2 up.
I apologize to those with dial up connections, but I'm posting the pics here.
Hole 1 is 330 feet with the pin protected by a stand of cedars. From the Blue Tee you can see the left side gap around the cedars (A), from the White tee you can see the gap on the right (B). The Red can see both the A and B gaps. The Blue dot is in the same place in all of the pics for reference.
The hole is pretty short, but with the low ceilings, it isn't a gimme. Pay attention to the pics of the creek bank past the hole. The bottom is only 30' away, and you might be able to see the top of the pin from the bottom.

Hole 2. Blue 400', White 350', Red 275'
The Blue tee offers a straight shot through a 8' wide gap, or a slight annie fade through a 15' gap that is less visible from the tee. The Blue tee starts flat then drops about 30' to the bottom of the hill, then climbs back up about 10' to the basket.
The White Tee plays a tight hyzer line to the Pro line, or wider hyzer to join the red tee line.
The Red Tee is a straight shot.

As you can see by the photos gary posted the course is looking sweeter every workday. Steve appointed me as the club treasurer if anyone can donate funds for the pole's needed to mount the front nine holes contact me Joshua Perkins on my cell phone (214)417-2462.
Thank you Curry and Mike for your donation today any type of contribution is welcome.

I'll be out there Thursday around 5:45.
Things are moving along quickly now, and the course is taking shape. The front 9 are almost ready for play. The back should go in much quicker since the weather will be better, and there is less underbrush to clear on that side of the pond.
I'll try to get more pictures Sunday.

Yea, what is up.
Gary, lets run a fundraiser this winter out there.
A one day event. If we can get the bases back from Scott Cook for the Carrollton 9, we don't even need to have all the sleeves in before the event is held.
I can run payout with most of the income going to the course fund. (minus cost of goods sold, and something for the Carrollton Open)
Simply do a inventory before the tournament, do an inventory after the tournament. Subtract the cost of discs sold/payout and then split the rest 20% to the Carrollton Open and 80% to the course fund.
I am game. It is something I could do to raise money for the course.

9 sleeves are in the ground now. 7 more are waiting the sleeves and concrete.
The baskets need new poles (the poles from EBR were destroyed getting the baskets out) and they need locking flanges installed. We're working on tee signs.
Things are moving along nicely. Jeff Lisle brought the auger out and we dug holes for the back 9 except for 2 holes that could be a hazard if left unfilled for a few days.
Still a bit of work left in clearing 9's fairway to reduce the walk from 8's basket. I'll be getting some more pictures up shortly.

<font size=5>Front 9 Planted</font>
I got the word from Steve last night. The front 9 are in the ground. A little fairway clearing is left on holes 7 & 9, but the parks dept. is taking care of that.
Below is a quick map of the front 9. It's a little old, but it will get you around. An interactive version is at http://www.lsdga.com/maptest.html
We will be adding directional posts and tee posts this weekend.
http://www.lsdga.com/images/crawford/crawford_f9.jpg
This post is to remind everyone that we now have 27 fairways with 9 baskets the rec (red) tees play very fast holes 3,6, and 9 can be played as par four if desired its a beautiful course as you can see from the photos Gary posted the natural vegetation was uitilized the white and blue tees all have diffrent lines and require precise shot placement.

There looks like some people have been out cutting without permission.
Just a warning, The tees are not set, if any new lines open up, the tees can be moved to nullify them.
If you want to use a saw, there is still plenty of cutting needed on the back 9. Do not cut anything without permission from Steve. The front 9 is basically done for at least 6 months. After then we will look over what needs to be tweaked and locations for alternate pin placements.
