I was curious what others are using for their up shots, or say those holes that are 200ft or so where you need a disc that will both hyzer and anhyzer(depending on pin location). For the longest time I relied on a old aviar putter for my "get out jail" type shots but it seems to have found its way out of the bag during a recent round and I'm struggling to find a trustworthy replacement. I realize this is an opinion type question but I wondered if there was something a bit better than my old aviar out there that I need to try.

Putters are the best upshot discs out there. I have an overstable putter a straight putter and I broke my flippy putter so Im workin on beating another one up so I can have a flippy putter again. I use a putter for pretty much EVERY upshot inside 275-300 ft. I think they are really easy to control and very easy to throw. They dont skip that far and will pretty much just hold any like you put them on. I say get 3 11x Aviars if you like Innova. 1 brand new 1 slighty beat and 1 really really beat for flippy and use those. You can always find people who are willing to sell or trade there old beat up plastic for new stuff so buy the brand new one and then trade for the others. That should be all you EVER need in the upshot disc categorie (sp?)
I use challengers but any overstable putter will work.

The shortest, slowest disc that will get there = putter.
Same principal on longer shots = roc.
Only pull out the driver when you absolutely need the extra distance.

Champion Gator for windy, sidearm, or left hook approaches.
Crystal Challenger for everything else between 60-250ft
Inside of 60ft------run at it with your normal putt.
I use an H Wizard for most shots under 200' that aren't putts. The E and S Wizards work for me, too.
Any slightly overstable putter, including the Aviar will work great though.

Whatever you putt with, determine how far away from the basket you can still control that disc. That way you get used to using the same type of disc for almost half your shots in a round and learn it well. I use a Classic Roc for putting and out to about 180-200 feet away. I can throw it farther, but my control drops, so I move up a step to a regular Roc at around 200+ feet.
I currently put with a Omega super soft(really worn in good). I'd say for anything about 70 ft in I try and run at it(obviously if I can). I was thinking about a Ryno haven't throw one much. I carry wasp, buzz, breeze, glide for my mids. I might just have to pick up a couple of putters like one guy said above. Really sucks to lose such a special disc hopefully someone will find it and call the number on it..... /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
I use a beat omega AP for turnovers. a Slightly Beat DX Aviar for straight and I am experimenting with a 4x JK Aviar to replace my Crystal Challenger. I wish i picked up the JK Aviar a long time ago. what a stable pig of a putter.

depends on the shot: aviar,roc,monster!!
I'm with Pimp on this one. The best approach discs are 11x Aviars. Usually I have 2 for approach-One new and one slightly beat. But right now I am just using 1 Cryztal Challenger because I am broke. Those also hold great on any line. Very versatile

straight shots under 280 = pro line rhyno

the best thing about these 4 discs is that i am COMFORTABLE with them.
you should never have to force a shot, just throw something you are confident in.
If you're unsure about some shots, go practice those specific shots.
If you can put your upshot (drive on shorter holes) under the pin, who needs to putt?

For me approach is under 220ft
Hyzer - Champ Spider
Anhyzer/Tunnel - Classic Roc
Straight/Slight Hyzer - Pro Classic Roc
Go with what you're confident with. Don't throw Aviars just because others do. I putt with them, but find them uncomfortable to throw full speed because of the deep rim.

S Wizard (ss-hard, depends on wind), mostly Med. Playing in CO Open last weekend, I birdied the "mando" 200-225 island hole 3 times with the Wizard, nearly aced it a couple times. This is a great putter/mid range disc.
I use a Soft Challenger for short/mid putts, and most upshots when there is NO/minimal wind. However, if there is any wind, the Wizard is the bomb. I will be switching to the Wizard SS as soon as I get more to practice with.

S Wizard for anything inside of 300'. Nose up, they hyzer, nose down, anhyzer...it's becoming my go-to disc on 75% of my shots.

I usually use a medium or firm wizard for approaching.
When there are undaltions on or around the green I feel the less gummy the disc the better, especially on sloping greens. Super soft discs seem to grab the ground and roll, while the firmer discs will spin in place or check up for a split second or 2. The softer stuff will also grab more when throwing through leaves or foilage and the firmer stuff seems to get through more often.
FIRM Wizards are great for laying up!!!
But if it doesnt feel right in your hand I would suggest a medium.

i discovered yesterday that ithe wizard is an awesome controlled approach disc. i was at Kensingon in Milford, MI and i had amazing upshots to save the day. I S-ed my SS wizard between groves of trees, plopped it up under the pin from 150', curved it around bushes and large trees with an annie, and even threw a couple turbo putts with it over a couple bushes. amazing approach disc.
oh, yeah. its also the straightest, most dependable putter out there as well.

I use a champion rhyno for upshots up to about 250 and a champion gator for anything 250 and up. What I like about both of these is the stability...I like to know I'm going to get a bit of fade to finish the shot. I've got an older CE spider that I'll use from time to time, if I've got an oddball lie and need some sort of trick shot. Like somebody mentioned before, I love putting with JK aviars, but for whatever reason they don't feel as comfortable throwing from a tee or as an upshot.
I forgot to mention on my Post.
I use putters for Drives/Approaches up to 275.
If it's windy i'll probably only throw putters to about 250.
If the shots is wide open i'll throw a putter up to about a 300foot hole.
anything after that is definately either My First run Z-buzzz or my new E-element-X(What a sweet disc.. It throws for me like a less stable sentinel. very nice)
-Scott Lewis
I picked up a X-Wasp from a buddy to throw some so now I'm throwing a lot of newer plastic. I'm going to work on a few shots with some of this newer stuff with the hopes that I will find a disc I really like/trust and maybe I'll learn a few things in the process that will help my game. I know I have already been learning things about my Z-Buzz that I didn't really know I could do with it before just in a few rounds. Sometimes change is a good thing but thanks for all the ideas of things I can try I know that alone has helped me a lot.

I use Rhyno's for short approach shots and for putting.
For longer shots I use a QMS, but I am noticing that no one else is. I have three flat topped QMS's that will fly dead on straight for 100 to 150'. The problem is that they fly, dead on straight. You would be suprized at how often people expect a disc to come back and the QMS's I have don't do that. They hold well in the wind, will hold a gentle gliding hyzer or a gentle gliding anhyzer.
Fot longer than 180' I love the super Roc.
I bought a stack of QMS's from a wholesaler and i noticed how awesome they felt. Didn't throw any, but one of the people that picked up 2 off of me said the same thing.
FOr my twin brother's birthday i got him a clear max weigth QMS(completely clear. no pigment).
IT's a little gummy, but if you throw it on the slightest hyzer it will go dead flat with no fade at the end.
I prefer a beat up first run buzzz because it has some more glide, but whatever you feel comfortable with is the key.

The E Wizards I have thrown are great, but I still stick with my mediums and softs. They fade harder but on the occasion you turn it over alittle they flip worse. And when they do finally get broken in they turn alot more than an S wizard. I have a 172 Med that Ive been playing with every round (only true staple in my bag) for nearly a year, It is beat to hell, but still resists turn, while my E's began to turn after 2 months of use. i putt with the wizard and use it frequently on upshots. i also use an esp buzz. the most important mid-range disc in my bag has to be my wasp. i carry 1 z-wasp that i have had for almost 2 years and it still flies great, 1 d-wasp, and 1 esp- wasp. i just hit my first ace with my esp last week. very fitting to hit it with that disc since i throw it more than anything else. i also carry a gator but it only gets use in high winds and hard hyzer shots.

If the shot is under 250 feet you're almost guarenteed to see me pull out a flat roc for an upshot until I get into a range where I'm comfortable actually setting up in a staggered putting stance (probably 75ish). Outside of that 75 foot range? You're not going to see me pulling out a putter unless I absolutely need to run dead to nuts at the basket.
Thats just where my comfort is, just a little backhand flick of the wrist and the roc hyzers home under the basket like its never done anything else. Just because I *can* throw a P&A 275 doesn't mean I *should* throw a P&A 275. :)

I used to use challengers, but have fallen in love with my esp banger gt. It is overstable like a KC aviar or challenger, but I like the feel better. I know what its going to do everytime, will hold an anhyzer without flipping and just fade back at the end and when called upon will fly up to 300 feet when the hole calls for it.
That's the go to for most anything, but they the UV challenger is used for all flick upshots when getting out of trouble and the firebird has been known to come out for trick shots
