Well, quickdisc posted about throwing somebody off the board in "throwing techniques". Now I wonder if the humour in that was unintended, seeing as how such a serious matter is this all. If if so, I hope we can laugh latter.

How did he corrupt your IP address, medical records, and resume by posting on the PDGA site as a non-member?
Hi Morgan .
In a few words , this is what has taken place.
Apparently there has been a leak in the current firewall I had been using , allowing corrupt data in.
As you may know , not all firewalls and virus protection software are totally safe.
This virus or something like an infected worm has attached itself to my email and web address's. The way software understands certain codes is not so specific when there is a weakness in the server.
I had medical files deleted , job resume's deleted and had software platforms quarantined. VPN and I.P. address were corrupted by not recognizing reverse verbage. I'm no code expert , but have sources investigating further.
This has never happened to me before and I will procede with
Enforcement personel to resolve this issue.
This has set me back time and money , which I currently do not have. A file has been submitted to the Los Angeles Police Department , Professional Standards Bureau under the Complaint of Employee Misconduct.
The Internal Affairs Group , Police Commissioners Office and the Inspector Generals Office. Trust me , I will resolve this matter , make people aware that this does not happen to anyone else.
Apparently what started out as a joke , as I have been informed , turned out to be a malicious virus.
I have just been asked to exit the system.
Thanks for your concern and your patience in this matter.

I'm thinking this is probably a poorly timed yet completely unrelated virus infection that got through.
wow... that takes some extra large cajones!
Not really ... compromising a Windows computer is a relatively trivial task if the SysOp (that woule be YOU in the case of your home network/computer) hasn't downloaded and applied the latest patches to Windows AND hardware firewall firmware updates every time a new one comes out. (You DO have a hardware firewall and you HAVE updated its firmware, haven't you?) So breaking in and setting up a relay isn't all that difficult, and setting up a multi-point relay is no more difficult than setting up a single point relay, especially with some of the automated cracking tools that are readily available on the 'Net (but it can be d*mnably hard to trace a multi-point relay back to its source, esp. if the cracker uses tricks like IP spoofing and time shifting, and launches the actual attack through a public access terminal such can be found in a public library, some hotel lobbies, or an internet cafe), so there's no good reason for a sophisticated intruder to break into the LAPD network directly.
See websites such as www.cert.org (http://www.cert.org) or www.secunia.com (http://www.secunia.com) for more details on computer vulnerabilites, the anatomy of exploits, and how to secure your computer against malicious activity.
I hope this all gets resolved quickly for you. I still have a hard time thinking somebody would do that on purpose.
I'm inclined to think it's the work of a script kiddie looking to cause random damage without caring who the victim is, rather than an attack deliberately targeting a specific individual. That being said, it's still a deliberate malicious act.

This happened on my cousins computer. I do not have my own personal computer yet. I had borrowed his system for a few days looking for job prospects.
He has to re-image is hard drive now. A computer engineer has stated to purge the drive completely and ghost image software from a clean 80gig drive.
Since it was my fault when this happened , cost is at $637.58
currently for new drive and service. Yes , out of my pocket !!!
I'm affraid to put this on my credit card , Sunday , two of my card companies called me ( Master Card , Visa ) and activity was taking place without my authorization. Had to cancel both accounts as I'm on my way at this moment , to the bank to make sure I haven't been overdrawn on my debit card.
What a F.....................mess huh.
I'll take care of my cousin's computer.
I'll forward your information to him so he has some protection.

Save $637 and format the hard drive yourself for free:
Go to "start" and "run"
at the text box type COMMAND and hit ok
You will get a DOS box (yes you can still get DOS in Windows XP)
In the DOS box type cd\ and hit enter
Type "format c:" and hit enter
It will say "caution this will remove all data on your hard drive, do you want to continue (Y/N)?"
Y
It says "are you sure (Y/N)?"

And wave good bye to your computer. Everything is gone.

I agree with Rhett. I see over paranoid people thinking someone they knew high jacked their computer. There are countless attacks goin on as we speak. People scan entire blocks of IP's looking for computers that are running particualar software and versions with known exploits.

I get blasted all the time just for having the knowledge. This does not mean that I am bad. This means I keep my network secure. Its a never ending saga. Update, update, update.

Dude, how can you format a directory that DOS is running in? Thats to funny. Go get a boot disk and do it.
No problem dude. DOS runs in memory, that's called RAM for the computer illiterate. And you're not formatting a directory, you're formatting the entire hard drive! After you format (erase) the hard drive you will still have DOS in RAM, but if you turn off the computer you will have nothing.
Tell you what...if you don't believe me, try what I said, we won't have to read your posts until you reload your software, and with all the kiddy porn you have, that might take days.

Um, in light of Don's most recent post, I'm inclined to think there may have been involved more than simple virus activity. The fact that his credit card were apparently being used without his knowledge or authorization and the fact that the activity triggered calls from the credit card issuers to verify the activity is consistent with identity theft.
I'm affraid to put this on my credit card , Sunday , two of my card companies called me ( Master Card , Visa ) and activity was taking place without my authorization. Had to cancel both accounts as I'm on my way at this moment , to the bank to make sure I haven't been overdrawn on my debit card.
Don,
Unfortunately, it sounds like you've been a victim of identity theft, which is potentially a much nastier problem to deal with than simply a computer break-in. If you haven't already done so, I would strongly urge you to visit the Identity Theft Resource Center (www.idtheftcenter.org) ASAP. The Identity Theft Resource Center is a nationally respected non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of identity theft take back their identities. They have a Victim Resources section that will guide you through all aspects of the process, including dealing with financial institutions, government entities, law enforcement, etc.

Actually dude........or should I say my gender confused, fellow poster, MSDOS runs in this directory in the Operating system Mr Bill Gates so happily shed upon us.
C:\WINDOWS\system32
Morgan says:" (yes you can still get DOS in Windows XP) "
Actually this is not true. You can get to MsDOS but not true DOS. What is also not true is how you access the .exe from the run prompt. It is actually cmd and not Command. Maybe if you were running XP you would know that you windows 98 havin trands gendred blah blah @#%&*(
My question is once again. How can you format an operating system that you are currently in? I laugh at your insults. Dont you know that the only way to load DOS into RAM is by floppy or other media?
Now Morgan you also say, and I quote,
"In the DOS box type cd\ and hit enter"
Now Morgan, just what directory are we switching to? You never finished this command:o
Then you say, and I quote,
"Type "format c:" and hit enter"
This is not formating the entire hard drive. Only if you are a default user, which I assume you to be now, would this arguement stand true. The primary partition c: is just that.....a partition. A partition does not mean that it is an entire hard drive.
Someone sure is trolling around here. sniff sniff. Yup that would be you. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

partition schmartition. most hard drives are c: and it's the whole hard drive unless they partition it to run as two or more hard drives, which almost nobody does.
"cmd" does not give you DOS, it's the command prompt for Windows XP. You have to type "command" to get DOS, which you would know if you tried it instead of running your mouth.
MS DOS is not true DOS? Boy that's a weird one. I suppose MS Windows is not true Windows.
Also you say "Now Morgan you also say, and I quote,
"In the DOS box type cd\ and hit enter" Now Morgan, just what directory are we switching to? You never finished this command:o"
That's just to make it look neater. If you hit cd\ it starts a new line, just an old habit from the DOS days.

Personally my vote is you got into some type of spyware with a keylog generator that has probably reported your information back outside your network to a 3rd party source. Spyware is getting very creative at being used for identity theft purposes and you my friend have had just that happen to you. Secondly unless you have some real computer and networking knowledge there isn't anyway you can be sure of the who it was that done it. More that likely someone has enough information about your network that they have hit you with a virus to corrupt and infect files. Seek the help of an identity theft company and get some security on your new network which includes, a router, antivirus, and a desktop firewall software that helps with spyware. I don't know who you have paid $635 to to redo your computer but if they are a friend you need to kick their arse cause they have you bent over and are laughing all the way to the bank.
Good luck.
I had made a similar post last night but I did not want to go back and forth with the guru on this thread.
Yes, this guy is totally right. Might as well start by going to task manager and recording your processes. This will let you know what you are infected with.
Next, you might want to open up the "MSDOS" window and do a netstat. You can go to edit and copy the info from this window and give it to your service provider. This will tell them who is connected to your computer. Although they will not do anything.
The internet is full of Zombie computers that yours has now become. Alot of attacks come from people that just dont relize they are infected or just dont care. These zombie computers are the ones that are populating the net with trojans, worms, among other things.

I do this for living and have seen just what he describes in person. I'm not saying I know everything when it comes to this stuff but being an network admin for over 6 years you see stuff. I really hate it for anyone to has to go through it. Being connected to the internet is a dangerous thing today and most average end users don't realize that. I have seen articles that say you can attach a XP machine to the internet and in less than 2 minutes(Less time than it takes to get any of the patches) its possible for that machine to be compromised. The worst part of any of this is there is no silver bullet answer to problems that exist. If you use windows ditch IE and run firefox, secondly get a decent desktop firewall(XP's is decent and better than nothing), get a good AV program, Norton or Mcaffie are great lastly learn how to use programs like Ad-aware and Spy Bot Search and destroy and hopefully that will be enough to keep the worst of the stuff off your machine.
If you ignored the computer wannabe geeks and listened to me (a true geek) your hard drive would be sanitized by now.

More..................this has to be said.
I had multiple sessions open , while on Ebay and purchasing discs with PayPal on a secured, so I though , web link.
My cousins computer was virus infected to begin with , states the Geek Squad. Say what you want , those guys are wickedly awesome and techinical savy. I had learned alot.
They helped with the purging / cleaning of the original hard drive and I'm in the process of returning the one I bought.
Whew .....................................
Now.........back to this " Pharming" thing.
This is something totally new to me and this is kind of how it was explained to me.
I was a victim of what's called " Pharming".
Pharming is when thieves , on the web , redirect a consumer to an imposter Web page , even when the individual types the correct address into the browser. They can do this by changing - or "poisoning" - some of the address information that Internet service providers store to speed up web browsing.
Some ISP's and companies have a software bug on their computer servers that lets fraudsters hack in and change those addresses. Pharming victims , like what happened to me , type the legitimate address in the web browser and end up at a phony site anyway.
ISP's look up IP addresses , by contacting special online computers. But many ISP's instead store a list of common Internet protocol addresses so they don't have to do this lookup procedure.
Hope you are following me so far.
My cousins computer had a weakness in his system which allowed this to happen. Secure software and upgrade patches prevents this from happening. I don't mean to scare you , ever , but be careful of the web addresses you contact.
Back to this IPS stuff.
The software bug relates to this fact , letting fraudsters hack into the list using a technique known as " DNS cache poisoning".
Variations of the bug have been around for years , and of course , fixes are available.
The information I was provided , was there still are a few thousand ISP's and companies that haven't gotten around to patching the bugs and were involved / affected in a recent attack.
Wow huh...........
I had gone online to check out some discs on Ebay and to buy some plastic using a PayPal service.
Now you probably see why I don't use this method of buying plastic sometimes.
Please be careful.
I have resolved this matter and didn't mean to make or upset anyone or to accuse anyone of malicious activity.
I had the SoCal web site open , the PDGA site open , Microsoft Excel , Word document and email addresses open.
All the links shut down with a code message stating my system has a virus and was spreading to my addresses.
There was some wierd , jumbled script message which really upset the system. I had just used my Master Card and Visa Card.
Sunday , both Master Card and Visa called me at home , stating abnormal activity. I had to cancel both accounts and in the process or re-applying for both.
Man...........what a mess huh.
I have not played Disc Golf this week , as I have been re-writing and updating my resume , which by the way had been deleted. S*H...........happens as they say. Get over it !!!
My thanks though to the dozens of emails and public responses I have received. It was really appreciated all the genuine concern. Very Cool !!!!!!!
