I was thinking about who you would showcase if you were a TV producer and chose the most entertaining players for people to watch on a TV show to promote disc golf. Thinking about it, it seems to me the most entertaining players relative to the quality of their golf would be the top Grandmasters like Voakes, Greenwell, Monroe, Slasor, and Pierson. These guys have forgotten more shots than our top Open players throw. They grew up during the time when golfers also did all of the other disc skills that are lost on most of our new golfers. We feature MPO, MPM and FPO in our Final 9s, but for spectators, give me the GMs.
Anyone else have thoughts on this? It could even be the specific four players you would feature.

schweb... crowds love the thumber
All I know is that the crowds go wild when TT enters the parkin' lot.
I don't know which it is though...the True Realness or the In Motion part that gets them everytime.

Interesting proposition Chuck. It may be because I'm on the far side of fifty myself, but I've really enjoyed following the GM's at the USDGC, the only "biggy" I manage to spectate every year. There is no release angle, grip or putting style that those guys don't use at some point. That the disc golf aspect of the round will be entertaining is a given. That they all seem to be good guys, personable, accessible and can carry on an intelligent conversation, or at least what passes for one with the likes of me, is just a bonus. Driven guys yes, but ones who have the whole thing in perspective with the rest of their lives, and are still out there play ing. Emphasis on the play not coincidental. All ya gotta do is see Slaz "skip" up the pad on a drive...... or turbo a putt from 35'....... or sink a 100' upshot with a funky straddle hyzer release.............or....or.....or.. Lots of I-remember-when's in those vaults. :)

Stokely(when he was playing) because he threw routes that very few people can throw. Saw former world champ Johnny Sias play last year and I'd love to play with him. He was throwing about 320 and shooting 990-1000 golf.
I like Chucks idea. I see the masters and Gms pull saves you can't believe.
I saw three shots, masters div, in the final round of the Motherload that were simply incredible. There is some thing about an amazing second shot save from the ruff that gets you going more than a clean drive from a tee? Maybe cause I don't throw that far, and consequently throw a lot of approaches :D
Maybe a mix?
How about:
The Champ.... is the champ : )
The Schwe is a crowd favorite with a huge gun & jump putt
David Greenwell is just stellar and a great guy
Stevie Rico with his amazing putts, rediefines the game
Crazy John Brooks to keep it real

So far, four of the five guys I had in my potential dream group (not just GMs) have now been mentioned by others. A few more posts and I'll post the rest of my original post with the group.

Per the request of the original post, I would have to say it has to be mixed doubles, and that Schwebby/Burl would be the number one team. Those two are fun and very entertaining, and they have bunches of fun when together.
Who would the other team be to fill out the card? Climo/Korver would be a deadly combo from a golf point of view, but they are both very nice and reserved on the course. They play downright awesome, but they play that cool steady game.
Actually, that might be the best foursome because of the juxtaposition of styles of the teams! :)

I'll take Climo, Stokley, Crazy and Schweb. Climo because he's Climo. Stokley for the side arms alone. Crazy for the deuce shot I saw him make in the Wide Open. Schweb for the jump putts. I'll toss in Julianna just because I saw her pin a shot from around 125' from her knees. I was impressed.
I think God would beat everyone, even playing by himself. Then again, Superman might be pretty good.

1. Climo - Anyone named the Champ is to be listed in any dream group.
2. Schultz - You can't exclude the 2X defending champion.
3. Hatfield - He might be the next champion after Schultz and plays great against him.
4. Boobs - High entertainment value with some hot-round potential. Not to mention, he would probably take his shirt off and flex to increase disc golf's appea to those toting real boobs :)

Tom Monroe
Dean Tannock
Joe Thacker (From the "Joe Bro's" of the 80's)
Tim Keith (Just look behind Hammock from the last few NT's)
Oh wait....I get to play against these guys all the time. Alabama has the best masters contingent out there.
Dunipace, Greenwell, Climo, and Johnston (playing Idlewild)
Dunipace because he invented the modern golf disc and that would help the commentators talk about how our sport blossomed into the competitive thrill it is today. Plus he's a former world record distance holder and a former World Champion. I want to hear the commentators debate whether Dunipace invented the beveled-edged disc as a technical exercise or if it was because he wanted to make frisbee golf into the most awesome game on the planet.
Greenwell because he's one of the most competitive and skilled players in history
Climo because he's Climo
Johnston because ... well... because its my decision and i'm sticking with it :D
and the 18 hole, pro par 72 course Idlewild because it's the best & most challenging course in the world and would make for an awesome video...
Alabama has the best masters contingent out there.
In a GM competition, I like Kentucky (Greenwell, Voakes, Salaz...)

Of course we have Tom Monroe, a GM but I just lumped him into Masters to make 4. He can beat those guys from KY. The problem is getting him to play in a tourney.
Sounds like the makings of an East Coast / West Coast -Old School / New School match in the makings.
Doubles is a great idea, more aggresive match.
Greenwell Brooks, vs. Climo Stokley what a match. :D

one GM not mentioned by Chuck (probably because he's still ripping up the masters, and could easily compete with the younger guys as well), is Steve Wisecup. Most of the GMs would be depressed if he played in their division, or lived back east still....
Dream group(by level of fun, not skill);Cup, Ginnelly, Devine, Olow, Embree, Crump, Schweb, Milne, Dunipace, Ferrans.... oh forget it, to many to mention......... :D

Stan the Man also joined the GMs as did Lavone last year. The really interesting competition would be four top GMs versus four top Open players in the 20-station SkillShot competition. There's a new layout at the NDGC so maybe we'll see that down the road.
:D
That's what I was thinking basically Chuck, except the skillshot part. I was thinking it Masters or Gmasters vs. Open. The only catch is that the Open might have a distance driving open holes, but would the wiley GMs make up for it on the approach and putt?
Perhaps some thing like a course with par 4 holes? Too long for anyone too reach, or to tight to make a differtence. Where second shots and putts were critical. :D
Some of those GM's can throw a lot farther than you might think.

Some of those GM's can throw a lot farther than you might think.
Exactly. Except instead of using Beasts and Orcs (discraft/gateway.....) they are using Sidewinders and Flashes.
When Tom Monroe first got in the Sidewinder he hit a tree at 415ft about 8ft in the air. That thing would have at least gone another 30ft before grounding out not to mention the skip.
Plus these guys can do insane rollers, and make them stop while still vertical.
But it is obvious that the open players do have more crushing distance then the older guys, and likely more tournament stanima. Perhaps a better golf challenge would be on a more technical finesse course where true distance really does not matter entirely but it is purely based on course management and accuracy. Anyone have a good example where a great shot does not have to be too much over 400ft, but still tests the skills of a golfer. That should be the 1 on 1 challenge course.
