I'm looking to pick up a basket for the backyard and want the real thing. I was going to start a poll, but I want to hear which one and why. Price is not a consideration.

Innova Discatcher
DGA Mach 3 or 5
Discraft Chainstar
Gateway Titan

(sry if I missed any)

Gateway's Titan 24:

~ 3 sets of chains all with their own lower ring
~ Middle chains are higher gauge...Disc never really gets to the pole that way
~ Completely dipped= rust and wear proof
~ Red is easy to see from far
~ Price is competetive
~ David would probably throw some Wizards in with the purchase

May 09 2005, 11:12 PM
I would get a chainstar!!!!!!!!!!!
They are amazing baskets, i have 2 of them and would never get any other kind of basket.

Discatcher because of the visibility...more neighbors will notice it and ask you what the heck it is. ;)

I'd also recommend a Mach II New as a good practice basket. It is probably a bit less expensive than a 3 or a 5, but it's got a much smaller sweet spot which makes you a better putter in the long run. Truly bad putts (off-center, high in the chains, etc) won't stick to a Mach II New like they might in a Chainstar or a Discatcher...forcing you to be more true with your putts. Just a thought.

And Will, what makes you so confident that you can win that Titan? You're gonna have to beat me to get it, tough guy.

Mach III or Chainstar. Don't have a lot of experience with Chainstars, but when I have played on them they're really nice. To me Mach III's are the standard basket. I like Discatchers for wooded courses due to their visibility, but otherwise I don't like them that much.

not to mention if you're red/green colored blind like myself red blends in with the background and yellow doesn't

I bought an Innova Discatcher off Mullet (mitch Sonderfan) and i love it.. The Chastity belt is a pain sometimes, but if you hit it you would have missed on any other basket. My local course is all Discatchers so i'm used to them now.

Mach V's are hot too!

Hmmmmmmm..............

I still do not have the new Innova Discatcher. I hear good things about it though.

I love my Mach V's though.
The new Mach III's are always excellent.

My Mach V's have the Hendrick light kit's attached so you can play after hours.

Tough to beat DGA 's baskets. HIGHLY RECOMMEND !!!!!!

Discatchers and Mach 2 new are very good at NOT hacking up your putters. Look for sharp edges like the numberplate on Mach 3s or the top of the pole on most baskets. You can put rubber stoppers in the pole or put half a tennis ball on top.

Er, maybe more like 4/7ths of a tennis ball:http://www.centxdglove.com/uploads/Eldo_Tennis_Basket.jpg Flagage optional. ;)

...now, I don't know my 'machs' from a hole in my Park; I can report this is a model which HAD a numberplate vandalized.

...I make this addition to our practice basket, too [the kind designed so, in theory, the chains can slide inward along an elongated, sloping Knob of Headrick], but those don't last too long...what IS the deal with kids, and the need to constantly steal 4/7ths of a tennis ball?!?

What about if you've got a type of colorblindness where yellows are the hardest color to see, that's what I have and one of the 2 reasons I hate innova baskets.

If you don't hit the number plate a lot then you won't have a problem with this.

We have 6 chainstars and 18 Mach 3's on our course. The chainstars spit more then a single chain Discatcher.

I practice on a refurbished Mach 1, a second ring of chains were added on the inside. That has helped my putt a lot.

I would go with the Discatcher, the yellow band of death is a huge mental mind #% in a tournament. Practice on them and you will be more confident.

May 10 2005, 01:35 PM
Buy the basket that you hate the most, and will play on in a tournament. This will give you the advantage of practicing on where to hit that basket so your putts stick.

EX) I hate the Innova disc catchers so I got one of them and now I can putt on a disc catcher.

If you're just looking for a good basket then buy a mach 5.

Maybe I have different types of Pole Holes.

Most of my portables have a removable number plate on top.
I asked for these this way so I could attach the light kits on top. Other wise they are just flat with the chain rack.

Two of my portables , I have re-designed the pole length and now have the ability to have a full size basket , suspended from a tree. With the rope and swivel attached to the chain rack system on top , you can swing the basket from side to side or in circles for a moving target. Now that's kind of like Minature Disc Golf with a twist. Had a Physics Professor in College help me with the variables when water from a high pressure nozzle was applied. It really works. Acts like wind when done correctly.

Sort of. However, all of the chains in a Chainstar come down to a single ring. The Mach V has two separate rings for the inner and outer chains. I think the Chainstar catches a little better since all of the chains move from side to side together. With independent rings, it's a little easier for the disc to turn and slide thru on the Mach V. The slider chains on both of those baskets don't really work as intended. If they did, both of those baskets might catch a little better than the Mach 3.

MACH V. anyone who thinks they spit needs to stop eatin' glue. Titans look incredible, however i havent had the chance to putt on one yet.

" The slider chains on both of those baskets don't really work as intended."

They actually do. When I talked to Ed years ago when he created the Mach V design , he told me to put a bit of grease or Non-friction lube on the slider part of the chain rack assy.
If you have one of the newer ones , the S hook which attaches to the chain assy, should slide with very little movement.
I have 4 currently , 2 Mach 3's , and a Chainstar.
If the bottom ring is a issue , remove it and connect with chain links, identical to the chain assy.
It will flow like putting into heavy curtains or drapes.

My SolarDome is similar to the Mach III design .

If you have a SolarDome from DGA , have the inside cover Chromed to reflect or refract the light better.

You be able to drive at it , in pitch black , from 300 yards !!!

Also , if you need to be even more different , Have your basket
Powder coated in Phosp. ( Glow material , baked on.)
Works excellent in sound studio with black lights..... The Strobe light effect is harder to capture on video though. Makes your putter travel in slow motion.

It does help to practice on a basket that is being used in Tournament play.

My only question is , how come baskets used in regulation tournaments are not all regulation height ? :(

From basket to ground. I know tee-pads are not all regulation either. They are close though sometimes.

Standards are Standards.

Compromise is for the Insurgence.

because of the ability to 'customize', I'd go with
Innova DisCatcher - with dbl chains - in your choice
of color, with your favorite number or whatever...

If you've got a big yard, get 2, and get a couple extra
receiver tubes/caps and you can have variety too.

you can throw soft magnets, blunts, omegas, all day long
and rarely cut an edge. And they do live up to their name!
just hit chain, not chastity belt. :o
and with really soft putters on a hot day, just jam 'em thru the side of the basket :D

The New Mach III by DGA. Most courses have Mach III's.

If you play on courses that have Innova Baskets , invest in the Discatcher Pro. They had some really cool one's at the USDGC !!!! Tough to argue with that . :D

If you are talking about North Calais, I don't quite agree. The chains themselves catch very well, but if you hit the rim or the belt in any way you are looking at a sweet rim out that will leave you 20+ from the basket. Those baskets are about the only down side of one of the best kept secrets in disc golf.
