DOes anybody out there know if there are any courses in South Georgia? I have recently moved here from TExas and the nearest course to me is nearly a two hour drive in Tallahassee. Are there any golfers interested in putting in a course in Valdosta/Tifton/Albany? Looking forward to any replies...

Tom Triplett Park in Savannah has a new course that was installed by Harold Duvall late last year.

If you are in Tifton, you are only about 2 hours from Augusta where there are currently 4 courses and 3 more under development at the PDGA National Disc Golf Center.

You should have never left Texas! Good luck finding a course close to you!

Build a course and they will come. Or at least I will when I'm in Georgia. Never could figure why disc hasn't caught on in Ga outside Atlanta, Augusta and N. Ga in general. Even in Athens where there is a ready made market of students they have only recently gotten a permanent piece of land for a public course. Good luck. I lived the first 20 years of my life just south of Macon and south Georgia folks are very good people. Ya just gotta show them the way. And whatever you do don't say, "Well we used to do it like this in Texas", because I assure you, no matter where you are from they don't care how you did it there. :o:D;)

The state park in Cordele is getting a course!! Should be complete in the next couple months or so!!

It is easy to get to from I-75 and is pretty close to Tifton and Vadosta.

Good deal Mike. What's the park? Cordele's an easy shot for me when I'm visiting my folks. In the past I have opted for leaving a half day early on the drive back to NC so I could play courses in Augusta or Columbia. Now maybe I can get in a round during the visit. Any contact info?

That's great news. Cordele is not very far away from me. By the way, Riverdog, I'm the guy from Texas with family in Yadkinville, loved the course up there.

...and the world just keeps getting smaller and smaller....... Holler the next time you are up this way and we'll fix you up with a round or three at Ramcat too. :D

OK. I drove up to Cordele this weekend to see what progress has been made on the course and I think it has potential to be a great one. There will be several tight fairway shots through the tall pines, with one 250ft. straight shot with little room for hyzer or annie. The park staff are still working to clear out some more of the undergrowth, but should start to have it ready in about two more weeks. They have one basket in now, but are just waiting for time in their schedule to put the rest of them in. They are planning to clean up the floor and sow grass eventually, which should make it a nice course. Plus, if the course is successful, they may be open to putting a second course in, or perhaps hosting a fly 18 at their ball golf course. The course should tentatively be open in two or three weeks. Anybody want to get in on the first round on Saturday, June 11?

Good deal Tifton. Keep us informed. I'll be in Georgia the weekend of 25 June. My time won't be completely my own but if they have it in the ground I might be able to run down for a couple of hours Sunday a.m. the 26th.:cool::cool:

Just to update the thread, I talked to the people at Georgia Veteran's Park in Cordele and they are now going to be middle of june before they can open up the course. They are working to clear out the stumps and thorns so they can sow grass. Hopefully, the course will be worth the wait. They are working on organizing some kind of kickoff event. While I'm at it, what is the best course in Atlanta? I'm taking my wife up there this weekend and want to hit a couple courses.

By the way, on what universe can you get from Tifton to Augusta in 2 hours?

Apache Attack 'Copter will get you back from Augusta that fast. Course there'd be some 'splainin to do to the boys at Fort Gordon. :D

Thanks for the updates Tifton. Hope they have it completed by the time I'm down there in late June.

Suggest you try Redan Park (east side of Atlanta) or Meriwether (southwest of Atlanta), depending on what part of town you'll be in.

Hey there Tifton. Any word on the Cordele course?

Jun 28 2005, 12:51 PM
Sorry, haven't been on in a while. I went up there last night. The course still isn't done, due to the park dragging it's feet and still not having all the weeds cleared out. The tee pads have been poured, and all the sleaves are installed. All they have to do is put in the baskets, and it would be playable. They do still need to take out some trees, but the course would be playable if they would put in the baskets and tee signs. Anyway, that's all I know right now.

Hey Tifton. No problem. Didn't have time to get down there this trip anyway. Talked with some cousins from Vienna and they couldn't think of a Cordele park that might be big enough for a disc course. What park is it in? Thanks. Jamie

It's at the Veteran's State Park west of Cordele. You get off at the main exit, 101 I think, and then just go left for like eight miles, turning left into the park.

Don't know if there are any South Georgia disc golfers out there, but the course in Cordele is nearly completed. I am planning to get up there next weekend and help put in the baskets. They've cleared a lot of trees and foliage, and they do have concrete tee pads already poured. There's a nice swimming beach at the park, and plently of camping, museum, oh, and a pro shop at the main office. Should end up being a good start for disc golf in S. Ga. Should be playable by August - middle.

Sounds good. Can't wait to hit it next trip down. Veterans is the park that the locals just refer to as "at Lake Blackshear". If it turns out to be a good course, I might have to pull the camper down and do a combo disc and dog trip in October. Keep us posted.

The Cordele course is finished, and open for business!!! For now, the course is free to play, they just ask that you pay the parking fee. I am planning to play the course on Saturday morning, and would love to meet anybody there who wants to make the journey. Its actually turning out to be a nice little course. Some of the holes are marked as par 4s and one par five, but really its a legitimate par 52 course.

Hope to see someone Saturday...will check this thread.
