Do y'all think there will be a tourney up there on June 18th?

I think Ski Sunrise changes ownership every single year, and Tom Bant has to start every single season off by first convincing the new owners that disc golf is a good thing to have on a mountain.

How would you like to have to do that every year at your home course. Ugh,

May 30 2005, 04:41 PM
Sorry Rhett, even if both courses in Wrightwood were open, you wouldn't get a good idea of what you'll be facing in Flagstaff. Grass Valley would probably be the best example of the tight fairways you're going to see on three of the courses. Though that probably isn't any closer to you than Flagstaff. My advice is to go play hole 17 at Morley over and over, then when you get to Flagstaff throw less stable plastic.
BTW, I see you're going to the fling at Casitas. Bring gaiters and bright colored discs. :)

I've never played the Casitas course. What does your statement mean? Should I load up my bag wih stuff I won't mind losing?

As for Wrightwood, I am looking for altitude training. Playing the Tahoe tourney and getting to Flag early will probably have to do for that, though.

I've played Thorpe before, and I've played NAU in the snow. Is Little America like NAU, with little to no fairways?

slo
May 31 2005, 02:30 AM
That's not a misspelling of "Gator". Gaiters cover the sock/shoe nexus. Usually from snow, but also brush. Get those at R.E.I.

rhett
May 31 2005, 02:07 PM
So what's the deal with Casitas? It's a hella long drive; I hope the course is not all tall grass.

OB OnTopic Content: Anybody been up to Wrightwood and have a snow report?

May 31 2005, 04:05 PM
Tall grass, fox tails, stinging nettles, poison oak, water, lots of elevation change, blind shots, you name it. You probably won't want to throw discs that you can't afford to lose.
As for Little America, if it's set up the same as the 03 Worlds, it will be the tightest course that you play.

The weather up there today was Excellent !!!!!!!!

A little snow at Mountain High's top , but nothing to write home about. Weather was Awesome though !!!!!!!!
Bright Sunshine at about 65-67 degrees !!!!!!
Not a cloud in the Sky !!!!!!!
Route 2 West to La Canada is still closed .
Something about trees down or something.

No baskets at either Mountain High or Ski Sunrise.

I did find a course though , by accident , at the Wrightwood Country Club. Members only , sign says.

Saw at least 12 permanent baskets , set up with tee signs !!!!!
May have 18 holes there. Looked like a mini Wrightwood course with lots of trees and elevation changes !!!!!!!!

discette
Nov 07 2005, 10:31 AM
I don't think the "other" course - Mountain High - will be installed as the Sunrise course has 27 holes. There is not enough baskets to go around.

The Wrightwood tournament is scheduled for August 26 & 27, 2006. There is a chance that both courses will be used for the event.

slo
Nov 07 2005, 03:33 PM
...so, is it the same caretaker for both areas?

Too bad there can't be a DG 'War' up there, with two 'Vendors' competing for ones' DG outlay...yes, I'm a Dreamer...

I don't have any facts to support this, but I have the impression: 27 Holes @ the Table Mountain course has roughly the same amount of "separation" as 2 x 18 on most SoCal courses. And, that if a Wrightwood-area event could utilize 45 [or more] targets, it could be a Major, or something. :cool:Being a Resort-area, they certainly have the Lodging!

It was 5$/day, but that was...2002, last time I did a 'day' round? There was a very small 'pro shop', but they DID have one....forget the name; they had their 'own' discs [a stamp] on DX Rhynos.

Hello my friends,

I am ecstatic to announce that the 27 hole disc golf course at Sunrise, in Wrightwood is mostly in the ground. We still need to set up the pro shop, dig 5 sleeves and reclaim most of the tees from four years of erosion, BUT TELL EVERYONE, CALIFORNIA'S BEST COURSE IS BACK!!!
This weekend you are most welcome to come up and help Ron, Dave and I finish putting the course in. We'll provide beer water, and pizza.
Please bring shovels, racks and hoes. AND YOUR DISCS.
At first the course will only be available for play on the weekends, we hope to add more days soon.. We are scheduled to host a SoCal Pro/Am tourney at the end of August. I will get you all a schedule of whatever other events we can squeeze in before we pull the course in October.

Hey, let's all go up to Wrightwood to camp, play, and help with anything that needs to be done with the course. There are campsites still available today, but they are dwindling fast. Send me a PM or reply here if you want to come up. This course is awesome and the mountains are always a fun place to play disc golf. Elevation is around 7,000' at the course.

I have access to adjacent capsites so it can be a huge party at night with disc golf during the day! The cost is very minimal, around $20 per site, so just a couple bucks per person. 6|9 needs a vacation...Let's mob up there.

I have a double-campsite reserved for 1 night, Sat 7/1, for me and the first 10 people who send me a PM, or reply on this thread saying that they are going. We are rollin up Saturday afternoon, and coming back Sunday evening. Only 3 cars per site, so let's try to carpool. Cost is $45 divided by the number of people who stay with us.

I just got back from the work day today. We finished digging and pouring concrete for the last four pins (practice pin still not ready) The small but dedicated crew finished leveling and installing the rest of the tee pads as well. The pins for the remaining holes should be installed sometime tomorrow once the concrete has set.

I only had a chance to play/walk the front nine, and it was very sweet. Can't wait to go back up and play all 27.

The course I am referring to is known as Sunrise. Now that ownership has changed, the course technically Mountain High North. The new owners have agreed to keep the original course name. From now on it will be known as Sunrise Disc Golf Course at Mountain High North. It is currently open on the weekends for a small fee. Directions from Wrightwood: continue on Highway 2 and turn right on Table Mountain Road (Follow signs to Mountain High North) Proceed to lodge parking lot. Hole one is on the left. Not sure about the fee, but I think it is $5.00. It is definitely worth it, especially when it is over 100 degrees in the IE.

I will make sure the PDGA course directory gets updated with this information.

I am preparing PDGA sanctioning and tournament flyer for the So Cal tour event on August 26th & 27th. Watch for it on the website soon.

<font color="red">Hello my friends,

Sunrise Disc Golf at Mt High North is in, playable and it is so beautiful! Thank you Jerry Davis, Tim Cook, Dave Meyer, Ron and Jeff Brawley, that guy Art, Suzzette Simmons, Rob Wilson and Dave Dunipace for so much help last weekend. There are a few details left to fix but by the end of Sunday about 20 people had come up and played on a course that has been wild forest for three years. This weekend Sunrise will be officially open. On Sunday we will run the first of four monthlies we'll hold this season. We'll start at 10:00am and play one round of 27.Come on up and see if you can come close to Dave Dunipace's 27 hole course record of 17 under. Be advised that highway 138 will be closed from Beekley to highway 2. Any of you guys coming from Las Vegas or the High Desert should come over the Cajon Pass on 15 and get off at 138 to Highway 2 West. Also highway 2 is closed at Vincent Gap until 2007 so you can't come that way from Oak Grove.

Hey Dave,
The campground is adjacent to the course, in fact you can play to hole four from some of the sites. Come on up, you are going to dig it. The monthly is $20 to enter. You can sign up for the monthly and play all weekend for that. Or you can pay $7.00 for the whole weekend if you don't want to play the monthly or $5.00 per day. Or you can buy a season pass for $20 and play all season. Lookin forward to seeing you, wait till you play this course,it may be the best course you have ever seen.
