Does sober mean you have never tasted alcohol, or never had enough to be considered drunk ?

Chuck, you've never tasted a drop of alcohol in your life?

If "sober" for C&S means zero alcohol then I guess I haven't been sober on that basis. I didn't have a drink until about age 20, never had a beer, and have likely never been legally drunk in terms of exceeding the 0.08 or 0.10 legal driving limits, which would be a more liberal meaning of sober.

I wasnt smack talking him for wanting to be sober. I was just showing him that his REASON for being sober which he said was his ONLY REASON was completely flawed and untrue. I never told him that he should or shouldnt drink or smoke. Thats his decision to make and if he can stay sober I think thats great. Its really hard to do in this day and age. "Its really hard to do in this day and age."

It's called will power and having the force of character to do your own thing, not to have a pack mentality.

"I was just telling him his reason and logic around being sober is incorrect."

Have you studied logic? YOUR basic assumption--that girls wouldn't be attacted to guys who didn't drink--seems flawed to me. And yes, I have studied logic--it's called MATHEMATICS...

Apr 22 2005, 01:17 AM
Two things:

A) I hate DGPimp. I think he's a [*****]. Yet, when I read his post, I just felt he was telling it the way it is. In no way did I think he was condoning (look it up Pimp :D) drinking or smoking.

2) Just wanted to point out that there's nothing wrong with drinking. What's wrong is people who don't have the discipline and self-control to drink responsibly. In these cases, there is a problem, and one way, perhaps the best way, for them to deal with it, is to go cold turkey. Good for them for finding a way around their problem.

Never ONCE did i say that girls arent attracted to guys who dont drink. I simply stated that girls who like guys that DONT drink prolly arent going to be at COLLEGE PARTYS they will be other places where they KNOW they can find guys who dont drink.

My logic is not flawed. You are assuming and in turn making an ***** out of yourself because you are tying to make me look bad but you are trying to do it by using something that I DIDNT EVEN SAY!!!!!!!!!

He merely stated that going to college parties and not drinking was not a good method to meet girls that are into guys that don't drink.

So if you can go your whole life being sober id say thats great and more power to you because I spent alot of years of my life messed up on drugs and alcohol and I would like to have alot of that time back if I could. Sure it created lots of fun memmories and great times in my life but it also created alot of un needed drama and legal trouble

OK.

I was avoiding this one as I am am not sober myslef. (hence the rambling ;))

But I can share this:

When I was 21 my mother spent 30 days in the hospital I was born in recovering from accute alcoholism and the withdrwals there of. She nearly passed. But she entered AA and masterd the 12 step. 19 years latter I can not tell you happy I am to say that she is still here with us. :D

It was the hardest thing she ever did, and it was the best thing she ever did. :D
The 12 step saved her life. There is no doubt about it. My faher did it with her, and they are such wonderful people for it. Not just the sobriety.

We each have our own ways to go through life, and learn our lessons. The important thing is to not let things get out of hand to where they bring you down. And try to find ways to live in harmony with those of differnt paths.

Try to find tollerance for each other, try not to let your Vices make you Obnoxious,  ... nor your Virtue :o

If you ever think you need help you're not alone. There are people out there who can help and wan to help. Find Them.

To all of you who are sober and / or have done the 12 step, my hat is off to you. You should be very proud of yourselves. :D
For the young ones, from what I can tell from here, it's probably best if you never get started with any of it. Life is plenty of fun without the filters:D

3 years here

Apr 29 2005, 12:43 AM
Ever since I got my second DUI in '93 I've pretty much stayed off the suds. I don't think it was so much as being an alcoholic but more like being young and stupid. Nowadays I don't keep beer, wine or booze in the house, but on certain occasions I'll still indulge myself in a late night out (where I am not driving!). I still smoke, tobacco and the occasional non-tobacco product, but at this stage of my life that's more like a bonus for a crappy day ay work than a "I gotta have it" kind of thing. Sounds like I'm rationalizing - maybe I am. The point I wanted to make, however, is that when it comes to disc golf, ball golf, fishing or whatever, I TOTALLY enjoy the experience much more when I'm sober than buzzed. I could sit with my playing partners before a round and smoke a ***** if I wanted, but I never do. I get a lot more satisfaction out of playing my best at full faculties (well, as full as they can be at 40 ;)) than I do when I'm copping an attitude adjustment.

But I will say...I've now gone 26 days cold turkey from soda (pop or coke depending on where you're from) and bread, eliminating almost 1100 calories from my daily diet. I can already feel the change in my energy level and the waistline. Them hills on the course aren't so bad anymore, and my back doesn't tighten up as quickly as it used to. I still gotta ditch the Marlboros, though. Argh.

Apr 29 2005, 09:29 PM
I'm clean and sober, but I have good examples to live by... father died of cancer (cigarettes, alcohol), uncle died of cirrhosis and pneumonia (cigarettes, alcohol), mother is dying of heart disease (cigarettes), my 41 year old homeless sister died three days ago of cirrhosis of the liver in the back of a carwash just in front of the woods she lived in (alcohol, meth, cigarettes). Yes we tried to get her off the street, but alcohol is mighty strong competition. Learn to live healthy, not drink and smoke. It's not worth the pain and suffering to you and your loved ones.

I would put money on my girl busting your a$s at the golf course. Her rating is only a few points behind yours. Lets set it up. The world would love to see you get your a$s handed to you by a girl.
Please say something bad about her, she's quick to dot peoples eyes..

Hmm..... Looks like you yourself better be carefull then. I seem to recall something you wrote, let's see, oh yea....

Mr Hawk, I have a serious dilima upcoming and I need some help on how to handle it?

At an upcoming tournament I will be entering a very sticky situation. See I have an ex girlfriend that moved to the town where the tourney is. She has already made arrangements and has already bought my plane ticket to make sure I will be at this tournament. She is planning on picking me up and putting me up at this event, she also wants to attend the tournament and caddy for me. Thats only part of the problem tho. The problem is that I have had some relations with a local female golfer at this tourney and she has told me how excited she is to see me at this event, oh but thats only the second issue. The MAIN issue is that I am presently dating a certain female that will be playing in this event also. What the hell am I gonna do? Should I just make up a story about having a severe case of crabs and not show up?

Man if that doesn't make her look like a fool. Assuming she is one of the three. If not then all I have to say is Wow, you are really hot with the disc golf ladies. Maybe you could teach me a thing or two. I wonder if she knows you have talked about her like this. Pretty sad if you ask me.

Wow Brian, I am so sorry to hear that. Its heartbreaking.

Meth is bad, said the old guy with bad teeth. (And with several years now free of it.)

Alcohol is bad, said the guy who's struggling to curtail his weekday suds intake, with a pair of grandparents dead from it and a mom 24 years in the program.

Drugs are bad, said the guy who used to down a handful of pills washed down by a shot of Crown prior to taking the stage and really partying.

Cigarettes are bad, said the guy who after being totally quit for 3 years, gave in during a weak moment. In all that 3 years, the craving never went away. Best not to ever start.

I'm not sober, but I've got a handle on most of the things that can kill ya'. I'm still struggling with the cigs (nasty [*****]), and I still enjoy a cold frosty adult beverage.

Moderation is the key to life. Abstinence is the only answer when moderation fails.

FWIW.

(My mom says she's saving me a chair. :) )

No alcohol since October 22, 1992.
Not that I'm keeping track, or anything. ;)

To all you guys who are daily kicking those habits, a big-time congrats and keep it up!

To the young guys (and girls), it's a whole lot easier to not start than to have to quit later on. A lot of folks have a genetic predisposition toward alcoholism and won't know it until they get hooked. Dope, booze, and even tobacco have messed up a lot of people's lives...don't start..

I'll be 30 this year and have never had any desire to do that stuff. As for college, I had a blast at one of the biggest party schools anywhere (Univ. of Florida) without it. Get high on life!

Does that mean I'm kinda saintly? :)

And yes Drew, and others who have said this, if you're young, try to avoid getting drawn into a lifestyle which even the most staunch defenders of, would tell you at times has had a negative impact on their lives, which they would change if they knew then what they know now.

Had I known back when I started drinking and smoking Cigs that It would [*****] up my body and cause me as much legal trouble as it has then I would have never started. Ive kicked the cig habit and am in the process of trying to kick the drinking habit. The cigs was no problem its the drinking that im having trouble with. Ive cut it back to Bowling League nite and weekends but I think I want to cut it out ALL TOGETHER.

Trust us when we say "Its easier to stay away then its is to start and quit later"

May 06 2005, 12:05 PM
Pat, there are as many nut jobs among the donkey party as the Bush for King party.

If it makes you feel better, I have met more [*****]holes in the latter than the former. :) (You excluded, of course)

Mr. Limpet, we do agree on that then. There's a common ground. Maybe you should curtail the Bowling activities for a while, if that could help.

As for me, cigs are my evil hook in the mouth. I decided last night to quit again. Next couple of weeks are really gonna suck (like there's not enough stress in my gig already).

Use the patch and follow the instuctions quit 3 years ago after 11 years of hard core smoking.

May 06 2005, 12:28 PM
Hey Lance, I've given the patch some thought but when I quit for 3 yrs. it was cold turkey.

As for you smoking for 11 years, I wish I could say that. I've probably been smoking almost as long as you've been breathing in and out. :)

I don't think you're quite that old. I started smoking in my twenties.

I'm proud of you SpatWood! It's not that hard!

Keep up the good work and just don't buy any

I quit with the ciggs over 4.5 years ago cold turkey and I'll never go back!

May 06 2005, 12:50 PM
I thought you were younger than that, my bad. :)

I started smoking 30 years ago, and a pack or more a day 27 years ago. There were those three years from 99-02, but other than that, I've been killing myself on a regular basis for a long time. :)

Gee, I can't weight (freudian slip left in for humor during later edit) to blimp up like last time. My stop smoking plan consisted of Wild Berry Gummie Savers. :)

I have quit drinking Monday-Friday except for my bowling league on thursdays and Im trying to quit drinking as much on the weekends as well. I really think that it will help my golf game. I dont think Ill EVER quit for good or stop entirely im just going to try and keep it to special occasions only.

Find the nearest "Freedom From Smoking" classes

Wait, here you go:

American Lung Association "Freedom From Smoking" link (https://www.kintera.org/site/apps/kb/home/login.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=38973&kntaw1360=2DAEBE6CCCF942D4AC3A459006C93F78&membershipreq=83912&targetURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Elungusa%2Eorg%2Fsite% 2Fpp%2Easp%3Fc%3DdvLUK9O0E%26b%3D22933)

I recommend finding one of the classes and paying $60 or $100 or whatever it is these days. Something about doing it with a group that helps. It's no use quitting and being miserable all the time. The Lung Association class teaches you to identify your "triggers" and realize when they are kicking in. You come up with strategies for dealing with the triggers before they happen, so you are prepared. You hang out with others going through the same thing so you don't feel like a solo i-diot like you do when you get cravings going it alone.

But rest assured, two to three weeks of your life will be awful. Funny since it only a few days for your body to detox, but your brain...that's the problem. :)

Do it Mark. You need another 20 pounds on you anyway. :D
