The long awaited Quarter K from Discwing has just started coming off the production line this week. It won't be generally available in the States for a few weeks yet, but fingers crossed I will take delivery of 200 Quarry Park custom stamped discs on Tuesday. That will be just in time for me to take a few in my luggage the next day, when I fly to Atlanta en route to competing at Bowling Green and Augusta.

Search me out at the tournaments if you want to see/try/buy the newest disc from the newest manufacturer.

Derek Robins

PS If anybody is driving through Atlanta on Thursday en route to Bowling Green I would be grateful for a ride.

I'm curious to know if the QK is going to be the disc that is similar to the prototype seen at Worlds and on the Discwing site. I've seen another version that seems to resemble more traditional drivers.

Does it fly a Quarter Kilometer?

I can always use a disc that can do that.

I'd like to be your first west coast retailer :D

The disc is different to the prototype that Jonny brought to Worlds last year. The underside of the rim is not convex, and in that sense it is more conventional.

Apr 09 2005, 04:33 PM
Derek, what kind of plastic are they made of?

bruceuk
Apr 11 2005, 10:16 AM
Just to add to this, whilst the underside is no longer completely convex, it is less concave than any other driver I've seen, just a hint of concave at the point the lip becomes the rim (where you grip). I didn't get much chance to play with it but it still seems to go a big old distance, especially considering I haven't learnt to throw it in the same way I've become comfortable throwing Beasts and Orcs etc.
Looking forward to getting a production run disc out on the open field and learning it :)

I'm running a PDGA event on May 8th at the new Campgaw Reservation Disc Golf Course in Mahwah, NJ. This is the opening day for a brand new course. The Campgaw course will be the closest course to NYC (18 miles).

I'd love to have a supply of these discs for my event. Can you help?

Thanks....

the 2 on ebay are 163 and 168

bruceuk
Apr 16 2005, 01:45 PM
No idea on weight ranges, sorry. To answer the plastic question someone asked earlier, it seemed very similar to the Gateway S plastic, quite rigid but also tough. I smacked one into a fence post and it left no noticable mark.

Hey Bruce, haev you seen the actual production run discs, or are you refering to the sample ones that derek had?

Apr 16 2005, 02:43 PM
you really shouldn't throw your discs into fence posts. i hear it does a number on the resale value. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Latest news on the QK...........it will be for sale to the general public in LESS than five years! can you believe it. or maybe it was ten years, but who's counting.

The sample ones Del had

scottreek
Apr 17 2005, 02:51 PM
The British open ones are a little more overstable than the sample del had. I was flipping over the samples and the one I have been throwing from the British Open Flyes straight and curves left at the end. Fernando and i where throwing in a field the other day and my QK was going about 30 ft farther than my beast and Z Flash

I took one out to Kettering's field by hole 2 and throw it against my DX beast and a pro starfire. The Quarter K held its ground against the starfire while putting the beast to shame.
The difference between the quarter k and the starfire was that I could throw the Quarter K strait (like a golf shot), while I had to throw an S-shot (which took allot of space) with the starfire to reach the same distance.

I like the quarter k as a golf disc which says allot about it, this disc flies like a slightly more stable DX beast for me, nice and strait.

If you have the money to pay for this disc I would buy as many of them as I could. This happens to be one at this time.

Apr 25 2005, 09:31 PM
Just arrived in the mail:
175 H Illusion
175 Pro Starfire
173-174 Pro D Venom
173 Quarter K

A few initial impressions. The rim on the QK is huge. The only thing I've thrown that is close to as deep and massive is the Flash. The plastic feels good. Grippy, but still smooth (which I like). Not too far off from the new Pro D. I like the feel of the rounded, sloped lip. As big as the rim is, I think it would be hard for anyone with smallish hands to grip if it had a sharp, perpendicular lip. It has good dome. Of the four discs that came today, only the Starfire has similar dome. The production looks good. No flaws in the plastic. They have the IACTUS*DILIGENS*CELER motto from the website on the bottom, which I think is a cool touch. Sorry that's all I have to report, but its the last week before finals, and my Prestressed Concrete Design Homework is demanding to be attended to. Hopefully I'll get a field test of my new drivers (I chose what I thought would be the longest disc from each manufacturer) in this weekend or early next week. Stupid school work.

Also, I just noticed while looking longingly at my stack of brand new plastic, that the QK is slightly larger in diameter than the Venom or Starfire. I think it is the same diameter as the Illusion, as nearly as I can tell by holding them on top of each other.

Just took the QK out to a soccer/football field to have some fun and..... it flew nice, A touch further than my Orcs. I also had a venom to goof around with and it flew nice as well. I didn't get an extra 50 feet or anything but it was only the first time out with it. The plastic feels really interesting, like foam, bubble gum rubber if there is such a thing. I also tried to do some 360 drives which I haven't done in a while, I was getting some good power and it was fun. And the best part was I didn't pull a muscle or anything trying the 360!

Apr 26 2005, 12:09 PM
I threw it during DDGA B.I.D. #2 on saturday. Against the wind (35 mph) it was great. For instance, on 18, I threw it with some hyzer, it immediately flattened out but stayed straight as an arrow the whole way and faded left at the end. I then threw a new stable Elite X XS and it flipped way over and went way right.

On hole 16, with the wind at my back, I cranked the Quarter K way too high with Hyzer, but it still got out to around 350'. Same thing on 17, way too high but still hit the trees just before the basket about 25' feet up and still going strong.

Pro: So far, I really like the thick rim and the grippy plastic, it allows for an extremely solid grip.

Con: On hole 1, when I attempted a psycho hyser drive out around the trees and over the parking lot, it clipped a tree and dropped straight down onto the asphalt. This left a nice dent. The plastic does not look to be very resilient, sacrificing durability for grip. Use judiciously... use primarily on open holes.

davidbihl
Apr 26 2005, 12:11 PM
I figured out what the plastic feels like from the Quarter K... it feels like it is made out of lightweight quick-dry spackling!!!

Hey guys, the ones selling at $25 are fundraisers for our humble British Open over the pond, these are limited discs, first runs, John Dorn designed stamp and you will have the benefit of contributing to the first PDGA sanctioned B-Tier event for England, that's why they are special, the main production will be hitting your shores in about 3 weeks i believe, this gives you 3 weeks to get used to the grip, lip and lock, enjoy, i am ;) and i think they are more durable than a dx, more like elite-x or leaning more towards the elite x anyway.

I think the plaec that sells them for $18.00 are pre orders which will be for the standard runs that are coming out in a few weeks. Right now the only ones selling them are Discndat and Twisted Flyer

Apr 27 2005, 12:09 PM
What wts are yall throwing (and liking)? U think a light one will turn enough and a heavy will fade enough to fill two different spots in the bag or what? Doubt to many peeps can answer that question as most prolly only have one disc. The BO (British Open) one I got feels like foamed plastic and im afraid to throw! I bet a champ type one will fill an overstable spot. Problem is, tho that the disc has so much volume that high TPU might be way to heavy.

I got mine today, but it's too rainy to go throw it

It doesn't feel as radically different as I was expecting it to, but the change is much more felt when you put it in your hand then when you just feel it.
For me, it does not require a grip change. But I use a fork grip anyways not a power grip, so I can't vouch the same thing for everyone.

Can't wait to throw it!
