If you starve the 9yo for several weeks it makes them lighter. It also helps if they are wearing pants with strong belt loops to grab, like those old Toughskins that JC Penney made back in the day. :D

"Talk about your long lists..."
Hey Rooster, that's nothing. My 9 yr. old must be an ultra long range driver. Every morning I drive her all the way to the elementary school building from here. Weenie arm.
:D:D:D:D:D
Congrats to the big armed Mr. Wiggins. (Hey, he may be 9, but if a 9 yr. old can throw that far, he should be called "Mr.")
My 10 year old can roll 350' but can only throw 200. The problem is he won't use any long distance drivers, he uses a 155G Champ Cobra. I've put Valks, Beasts, Flicks in his hand and he doesn't like them. He won an 147G old school cyclone at a tourney last weekend, and he says he will try it. Hopefully he will because I know he can get more distance than he does.
Congrats to both of you! I met David at last year's Bull City, and was very impressed, both with his ability and his attitude. He has a great future ahead of him!
It's nice to see that me and a 9 year old are throwing the same disc for distance. I can probably beat him, but not by much. :p

At the Friday night doubles before the Oak Hollow Open 2004 (pro), I had the fortune to watch David play for the first time, and partnered with his dad. Little Wiggins is old school, using rocks and sticks to mark his lies, and going right up to the disc and slinging 30'+ putts and making them. A bright future doesn't even begin to acknowledge his potential!

343 feet! WOW!! That is truly amazing. Maybe I need to get my 9 year old to practice throwing for distance. What is the distance record for a 9 year old girl? :)
I am just kidding about girl's distance record. My daughter is not ready to work on distance. Right now she is still working on her form. I tell her to focus on making a smooth throw and not worry at all about distance. She mostly throws standing still, but has added a 1 step throw to the mix. We never practice distance. I tell her that distance will come when I decide to teach her the x-step. But we need to refine her throwing motion a little more before we can think about improving her distance.
I will show her this post tomorrow. She will be amazed that a nine year old can throw 343 feet. Your son has great talent. Good luck in the future.
Thanks.........Rick

yeah, the kid can do it all.
About the only problem he has is he's 11 and he has the "Go for everything" mentality, but just the age in him.
I spotted on hole 16 at Cedar Hill this past weekend at the Am crosstown in Raleigh and he threw a good drive on 300 foot uphill turnover and put it about 35 feet right of the pin leaving himself a downhill death putt.
HE actually airballed the putt and went about 40 - 50 feet flying down the hill, only to make the comeback.
The kid is for real. Once he agesaand learns proper decision making, it is going to be scary the rounds he will be shooting.

That will come with age. Most of the problems he has right now are b/c he is 11 and once he gets older, they will naturally go away.

176 meters = 577 feet at Big "D" in the Desert. Fantastic time and great event brought to us by Mark Molnar and thanks to many others as well (you know who you are).
David's record throw was 5th throw on 1st day, a 171 gm Pro Wraith light blue. He was throwing Pro and Dx Wraiths and Destroyers.
Valerie Jenkins broke the Womens record on 2nd Day with 148 meter throw - not sure what disc probably one of Mark Molnar's 150 gm DX Wraiths, orange.
Wind was off and on the whole weekend. David's throw was at 15 mph I'm pretty sure. There was a wind meter. Some winds were as high as 20 at other times as low as 3 or 4 mph.
David threw a "big anny" method as did Mark Jarvis who had the longest throw of the weekend until we left (226 meters), and others. Various techniques were used with success.
Once again, great time, great event, can't wait to go again when I will personally do my best to enter the 100 meter club :-(

Really awesome for Wigg, but am I the only one that feels like the bad facts by the news reporters kill the legitimacy of the sport? They make it sound as though a 12 year old is a four time world champion (not just age group) and holds THE distance record (again, not just age group). Wigg is a future world champ and potentially a future world distance record holder... but they make it sound like a 12 year old has already achieved these things.
*le sigh*
Congratulations to David Wiggins Jr., definitely every bit the phenom they say he is, but it just sounds bad to me to hear it reported as it was.

i'm fine with that C.Woj... i figure if anything it might cause some to actually look up the facts about that thinking 'theres no way a 12 year old can hold the record and have the world champ title'
would be nice if people got it right but news coverage is still new coverage.
I'm predicting Lil Wigg gets a State title this weekend out of all age groups... would be cool if they did a follow up story if he does win and actually interview him some or cover some of a tourney.
btw... Tradd, Jonas and the Chucktowners did a 7th innning stretch type thing at their local baseball game and launched bombs and helped spread the word about the sport... would be nice to org. something like that around here someday and might be a good venue to help spread the sport.

DAVID WIGGINS JR. IS THE DISC GOLF KID
Thursday, August 07, 2008
BY TAMMY MILLS
[email protected]
388-2731
At 13 years old, David Wiggins Jr. has his moves down like a pro.
They've been perfected from years of playing with his father, Dave Wiggins, and members of the Oak Hollow Disc Golf Club in High Point, N.C.
Of course, ``it helps if you live right next door to a course,'' Dave Wiggins said.
``I remember going over there and just playing with my dad,'' said David, who picked up his first disc at age 4 and was playing in local doubles tournaments at age 6. ``We started out with Frisbees and just started playing more and more.''
The eighth-grader now holds four distance records, four junior world championship titles and is the youngest player ever to be sponsored by Innova, a disc manufacturer.
And he's getting better.
``Even someone who's played with him as long as I have, his progress has surprised me,'' his father said.
It's one reason David will be playing in the 19 and under division in this year's championships, instead of his usual advanced/juniors under 13. His 4-to-5-inch growth spurt has given him more power and his rating -- 958 -- is plenty high.
His ability to get distance off the tee will certainly help. David, whose farthest throw is 577 feet, has captured records at ages 10, 11, 12 and 13 using several methods of throwing.
``You use almost every part of your body when you go for those long throws,'' he said, explaining where he gets his power, ``from your feet to your hips to your arms and your shoulders, having the right form, twisting right and pushing off with your feet.''
David, who said he enjoys a course with a good mix of open areas and woods -- the tougher the better -- has no immediate plans to go pro, though he will compete in a few pro tournaments next year.
He stays well-rounded with other sports --- bowling and fishing, especially -- and keeps his grades up.
``I like having competition, and being outdoors is really nice,'' David said. ``I used to play team sports a lot, and I really like just being on your own and not having to rely on other people.''

While at the time he was sponsored, David was the youngest such player, Nick Duran's father, Manny, asked me to point out that, in fact, Nick is now the youngest player to be sponsored by Innova. Nick is 2 time 10 and Under Junior World Champ and holds a couple distance records himself.

MTL,
That throw was quite a bit farther than we expected. We've been practicing a lot and I hoped for something in the 650-680 neighborhood. Three factors made it longer I think.
1. Excellent throw early on so the arm was fresh.
2. Excellent disc - the lightweight Pro Boss was perfect for this
3. Excellent conditions - wind speed at release was 17, but it probably gusted somewhat higher during the throw. Altitude +/- 3000 feet. It was chilly though, in the 50's, so that aspect could have been better.
Mark Jarvis, who we know can throw that far, threw his long throw first, and David's mark was not too far from that. If not for that and the fact that we measured the throw numerous times with different people and two range finders it was enough beyond our expectations that I might have suspected a measuring error.
He'll have his work cut out for him to top that distance next year. Continued growth (He's about 5'8" ,140 lbs now) should help.

Where can you look up all of the distance records all the way down to 4 years old? I am curious to see how my son is comparing.

why has the PDGA not made a bigger deal about this? it is the new world record and all.

It's a World Flying Disc Federation record. Not a PDGA one.
But the WFDF hasn't made a big deal of it either. It'll come.
