I had a chance this weekend for a little field practice with some of Discraft's newest molds.

The Venom was a very nice surprise! First thing i noticed was the new Pro-D plastic, grippy and durable. A very nice and subtle change. Being a wide rimmed disc, it flew stable at high speeds, and over stable at slower speeds. I would release it with some anhyzer angle, and had no problem getting it to fly 425' - 450' at about 80% power. It would hold it's angle for quite some time before flexing. It has the speed of the Flick, but the stability would fall somewhere in between the Talon and the Flick. It will be a very nice addition to the fleet.

The best part about the field test was when i asked Texas's only 1000+ rated player to give it a toss. I threw it down to the road on hole #1 at Veteran's and asked him to throw it back. His 1st attempt was a good throw, but the disc's overstability at slow speeds surprised him. His next few throws were incredible. He was throwing it UPHILL from the fence line..... over my head(near the practice basket).......and hitting the wall of the pavillion about 8' up!!!!!!!! He did this a few times!!! Can you say 500' UPHILL! What a mutant.

John, what gives, no props for me! I also threw it over your head. OK, so I was half way up the hill but that shouldn't matter.... :D

That disc and the new Drone should both be added to any bag. Great job Discraft!

Yikes!

I almost forgot.

I also wanted to see how the disc flew when "tossed :D" by a powerful two-finger artist like Lamoreaux. You may not know him yet, but as his signature says....one day, he's gonna get better. :o

Brian throws the "above the shoulder", powerful, anhyzer two-finger shot. The Venom was able to handle the incredible torque that Mr. BL. produces. :D

Discraft's Venom = Innova's ???

Orc

At least that is what some one who was throwing it told me was like. He said it was inbetween the Flick and the Flash in stability.

Mar 21 2005, 11:29 AM
No....it's more overstable than the orc. Innova will have to produce something like the Venom if you want a better comparison.

It's not even close to a Flash. For me, it's in between a Flick and a Talon.

$25 worth of $12 plastic.

Mar 21 2005, 02:48 PM
??? $25.00. Don't the pro line ones cost $10.00. Make sure you know what you're talking about before you post. I realize when you're stuck in you're Gaytway world you may not read threads about Innova.

Mar 21 2005, 02:55 PM
I would assume Chris was talking about the CFR Starfires, which were the only available Starfire up until not so long ago... they cost 25 dollars every time... and they're the ones probably most comparable to an overstable champion orc, which was the context of which the comparison was being made... :D

ummm yeah, I realized what I had posted. That was like saying the disc had the distance of something between a Birdie Putter and a Beast.

But I like Chris's comment about the cost of a Starfire. Really funny. Plus I WOULD pay the extra money for Champion plastic over Pro Line any day.

Ive paid 25$ for one.The others were 20$.And, they were worth it.

Mar 21 2005, 04:08 PM
Chris is right on the price of a good candy starfire.
I will have to give this Z plastic a try,
You say it is as fast as a beast/orc/flick but straight like a talon/teebird

The "test" mold i have is in the new D plastic blend. I don't think they are available in the Z plastic yet.

Yes, fast like a Flick.

Straight? ....... only at high speeds. Very overstable once it slows down. Nothing like a Teebird.

In between a Talon and a Flick!

Mar 21 2005, 04:43 PM
Good to know, thanks
If it is that overstable, i am not sure it should be compared to a starfire.
To me starfires are fast like orcs but with straighter flight like a teebird.

I held the venom this past weekend and it felt simalar to Gateway's S Illusion to me...

Mar 21 2005, 06:29 PM
I love S plastic so if this disc lives up to it's praise, I might just try one out. Those Illusions are really making me queef right now though.

Mar 21 2005, 07:12 PM
I can't get enough of those Illusions. If those Venom's are anything like them, Big 2 throwers are going to be in for a treat.

Mar 22 2005, 02:03 AM
So Discrafts last 2 discs are copies of the Demon and Illusion, I guess thats a compliment. Thanks Jim :D

Mar 22 2005, 02:53 AM
Profile is same as the FLICK, but slightly deeper (beefier).
When I threw mine at Cranbury, it just disappeared because of it's speed, profile, and time of day.

Mar 22 2005, 09:26 AM
Any guesses on to when these will be available, I can't wait to put one in my bag.

If you are saying that the Drone and the Demon are identical then one of us is blind :o. I will admitt to the Drone flying like the original 1st run Demon's.....Super overstable, and very predictable, but they look and feel nothing alike.

I have never seen an illusion, so i'm unsure about that.

JOhn,
I was only going by what I've been told and Havent actually seen either disc. The source was reliable, but maybe I should've waited until I threw one myself before posting.
BTW,
The comment was meant to be in good fun! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

In case you didnt know we developed our first disc ( the Sabre) as a Hybrid of the cyclone and XL, with a little advise from a local Aerospace instructor at Saint Louis University on a few things!

I heard from our local Discraft sponsored pro that the new disc will only be made in D plastic. The mold in other plastics produce discs that are too heavy with that wide rim.

Congrats on picking up JD. You scored heavily there. I'll see him this weekend, and i'll ask to see his illusion. From the sounds of it, it could be a close match. Take care.

SIMPLY AMAZING! I am holding a spot in my bag just for a disc like that. I will put it in my bag JUST BECAUSE IT IS NEW, and other ppl said it is great!

simply, amazing!

Ryan,

I think you'll like this disc, being the Pred lover that you are. It's like a nicely seasoned Pred. Stable at high speeds, OVERstable at slow speeds. Amazing, simply amazing. :D

Yes, from what I have heard thus far, I'm sure I will enjoy the disc, I was more making a sarcastic shot at the "it's new, everyone HAS to have one their bag!" type of attitude.

I just get annoyed at hype sometimes, but I am looking forward to throwing this disc. However, no matter what, if they don't make it in a candy plastic, I won't find any use for it other than playing around with in a field.

I'm still having too much fun with my Tsunamis!

Hello Everyone,

The Venom is now PDGA Approved and legal for tournament play. Look for them in the Bowling Green Am Championships players package this weekend and at your local disc golf retailer the first week of April.
