Chuck Kennedy came up with a very interesting idea today, and I wanted to know what people here thought of it. The idea is to (at tournies- beginning at the MID NATIONALs) to film players - take high speed Video- still images of various throws, your distance shot, backhand form, putting form, and then produce for you a custom training video, with an analysis of your particular strengths and weaknesses, commentary, and slow motion diagrams.

My question is, what do people think, are there enough people out there who would be interested in such a thing? What would you like to see in a custom training video tailored to your game?

Thanks!

That is an awesome idea – although cost is going to determine the degree of awesomeness. This would be great for us amateurs as well. However, if I had that thingy done for me an mpeg of it would probably wind up posted on the “What is the funniest thing you have ever seen in disc golf” thread.

Key things would have to be, it'd have to give very good advice and not cost too much. People can get advice for free and record themselves with a friend and their own camera. I think its definitely a good idea if it doesn't cost too much... A player would have to say, its easier and more helpful for you to do it too.

Great suggestions guys, keep em coming. The things I thought would be helpful would be some slow-mo type analysis of the throws, with emphasis on what's working well, as well as being able to give you MPH or Speed Data, as well as of course a kind of Highlight reel for Mid nationals, that is, if you sign up before the tournie, we can guarantee some footage of you actually playing the tournament!

Also, I agree about the awesomeness part. It all depends on what you think that kind of service is worth! I don't think it will be too pricey- especially not to begin with!

Thanks- and if anyone has any more helpful suggestions, keep em coming!

I like all the stuff mentioned but think it would be cool if during a slow-mo play back if you could have a superimposed technically sound thrower throwing so I could see how and where I truly differ. Does that make sense?

Pete I love the whole idea. I have thought about doing something along these lines for the past year but really never got around to looking into equipment and prices and such. That and I have no free time.

I am putting up a website with drive analysis like that of discgolfreview. Any decent midlevel digital camera can take some pretty good still sequences and if they come out right you can really capture the key points of the drive without any motion blur.

I could see something along the lines of what a bowling coach would do for a customer. Record someones drive before a lesson. Have the "coach" work with the player for a little while on some technique areas to work on, record another at the end of the session and then have video with slow motion and commentary as to what is happening at each part of the throw.

I think it might be possible to easily get a few sponsers to front the cost of setting this up and maybe having it part of the many offers that Highbridge can give customers of the sport, just for starters. If I have been reading your ideas correctly even being able to travel to large events and offer a service.

Sounds like whats being built at Twin Parks Country Club! You can film your Drive from MULTIPLE angles and have the option of being filmed for 9 or 18 holes...Then burnt onto a dvd for you to take home! No need to pre register for anything. Show up pick a package and Roc on...So yeah it's a good idea...

produce for you a custom training video, with an analysis of your particular strengths and weaknesses, commentary, and slow motion diagrams.

i think this is the make-or-break point of the idea and what would separate it from other offerings. especially if there was some ability to draw some X's and O's like during football games (although this may likely beyond affordable technology).

Mar 21 2005, 11:59 PM
there's some rather inexpensive video editing programs that can do this quite easily, so that part shouldn't be too much of a problem, I'm just wondering about cost

Mar 22 2005, 04:36 AM
I'm just learning Final Cut and other editing tools. I've been playing around with diagrams and analysis. I think we can offer some fairly intense type coaching- like you would hear on a DVD, with commentary and slow motion analysis and personalized tips. Follow-ups would be offered, discounted for repeat customers. I am sold on the idea personally because I know that this typs of study really helped my game. I studied video of myself flailing like an injured octopus, and gradually learned to imitate, then understand. I think that type of INSTANT feedback is key to getting it in YOUR body, not necessarily reading the typed messages here or even just watching pros play. I'm working on a mock-up lesson DVD now! What other high end type features would you want to see? We'll see what's possible!

Mar 22 2005, 09:38 AM
What would be really good, but not sure if it would work is to "super impose" or somehow overlay a transluscent video of a pro with close to the same throwing style so you could truly compare it.

Hi, Pete -

Sounds like an interesting adventure. I'd be leery of adding too many steps into the process. If there was commentary laid down as the shots were being taken, you'd be all set. But once you get into multiple angles, slow motion replays, diagrams, etc the time-consumption issue becomes a factor. But you know how the editing stuff goes. I'd start simple and add features only after the basics were established.

If you can get the process down to shoot and then burn, you're all set.

I'm picking up a new Canon GL2 this morning! A full rig. Woo Hoo.

Maybe we can feature your sample on DGL?

Joe

Mar 22 2005, 01:22 PM
that's be great Joe. I want to have the working sample up within the next few weeks, again, as yo know editing is a Bi^@h, but after the template is in place, laying down tracks later isn't such an ordeal. The GL2 is a fun rig! Good Luck!

The only problem with the super imposing a pro's throw over someone is that every person throws different and you would have to pick one pro for each person and then work around that. Which isn't bad I Guess, but a lot of work and would take a great knowledge of a LOT of different throws. Plus if someone just has "bad" form it would be hard to find a pro's motion to mimick.

Mar 22 2005, 05:37 PM
just an idea, but i was more just thinking if it be compared to the top pros, i don't know, i was tired when i was posting it

Mar 22 2005, 05:40 PM
I understand that, but the variety of throwing styles is amazing. Someone could throw really well and be drastically different from most of the top pros.

Mar 22 2005, 07:22 PM
alright, just forget i said anything :p

Mar 22 2005, 08:37 PM
Consider it forgotten. :D

Mar 23 2005, 01:00 AM
Well said. The general idea would be to give you a study guide for what IS working FOR YOU and what is NOT working for you... Then you could find one thing that Kenny does that you want to copy- to give you a snapshot quality record of your game now, and some things to work on. Then you have the added incentive of us being able to follow you around like a personal gallery during a MAJOR. Come to think of It I may have to limit this thing to the first 35 people or some such, depending on schedules! We could set up on certain holes, but we'd want to be able to catch more than one drive/approach/putt to provide a good highlight reel!

Good ideas though. I took some sample pictures and shots of myself throwing today in the snow from three angles with simultaneous high quality stills. I'll pos t some examples as soon as I get a mock up.

Mar 23 2005, 07:28 PM
Ok here's a small sample of the kind of thing I'm talking about. Here's a regular throw ( in the snow ) from three angles and slowed down to 60 percent. Nothing huge, but it gives you an idea of the kind of learning aid you could get, yourself from multiple angles simultaneously with PRO commentary and geared to what YOU want to work on!!

Download worked for me. Interesting piece of video. That simul-shot is cool, just hard to watch all three shots at once. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Yes, it is, so you loop it and bring one to the front, etc, slow it down even more, and pan across still shots that are even higher quality. It's gonna be sweet. And it didn't take nearly as long as I guessed it might in terms of setup and editing, just for that one shot...

Mar 24 2005, 01:06 PM
Here is another clip of Edited practice video. Putting from 25 feet, three angles. You can watch the different angles at different speeds, just to give you an idea of what we're talking about

bummer it wont let me view the clips, im really interested in these videos, its almost the only reaon why i want to go to the mid nationals now.

Here's another version of the MOVIE- an AVI file. (http://172.16.0.4/movietest.avi)

All the videos work fine for me, then it is about having the right codecs also. But definately as you said pete the process of setting it up like you have is not very difficult as it might seem beforehand.

I hope you can make this work man.

Mar 25 2005, 04:34 PM
Ok folks. I've worked a smaller, new version in. The links are the same Above, but the file is now half size for you non T1 pdga'ers and incorporates the still images. Even the best dv video leaves out this part, which is what I wanted to capture in my other thread. With the stills, you can essentially ZOOM in to catch a 1/2000 th of a second capture of what you're doing. When does your elbow snap forward? Are you leading with your hip or your knees? Are you rotating to full extension? I think this thing is gonna work. I've had a couple people try to sign up already!

Same Link, new VIDEO- CHECK IT! (http://middlecp.homeftp.net/movietest.avi)

It's Huge, 175 MB, so only for those of you with stout internet connections, but I am still working on a video, whaddya think?
