I'll get the discussion going here. I think that putting how much you will add as a TD to each division should not be required on the flyer. It is nice to see. It is admirable. However, new TDs need to have the ability to learn how much money really goes into running a tournament and by stating added cash, it can back them into a corner. Many players do calcualtions to see that payouts are fair and they can be very forceful with their opinions if they think the payout is small. Putting info on flyers gives them even more ammo to use against a new TD who is probably trying their best but making mistakes. They need to have the room to make booboos and know what to fix next year.

I am putting added cash on my flyers for my tournament. I have run some small one-day events, Ice Bowls and a 2 day C-Tier. I feel comfortable that I can at this point say "$1000 added cash to Pro Payouts" for my B-tier this June with the sponsorships I have received and expect.

I want to put money specifically towards the women's purse of $300+ but I am trying to get sponsorships in a slightly different way and don't know what my response from local businesses will be yet. Since I can't count on it yet, I'm not putting that on flyers.

I do plan to pay out the amount of money paid in for the amature prizes and players packages combined. I personally believe in a better players package for all so all ams get something from the tourney and slightly lower prize payouts. Ams are not pros but paying them in plastic tokens that can be sold for cash is paying them like pros. That's why I like a big player's package (shirt, mini, z/champ plastic tourney disc, player's party, sharpie, and anything else I can get), and a payout deep into ams (about 40% if possible). That way, as many Ams get something (including prizes for all jrs and women participants) but the biggest payouts go to the best players (which should be the open divisions).

I am an Open player now (who generally donates at the larger events) but I did play over a year as an advanced player. I did "plastic" in most of my Am events which was nice because I was still learning the game and how different discs flew. I got to try all the stuff I saw other people throw and find out what was best for me. I did win an event and the $120+ in certificates ot get discs from the vendor was nice but I really couldn't spend it all. I ended up buying plastic for some other people who were friends as well as stocking my bag. If I had stayed as an Am for another season, I may have won more events and started selling the discs I won for cash and that is not what being Amatur is all about. My goal was, and is, to get better and compete with the best in Colorado so I moved up. I learnd a lot and did get better and hope to prove it this year.

So anyway (as he realizes he has rambled on off topic for a while), distribution of added cash for ams does not need to be on flyers. I think Ams get paid well enough with a decent player's pack and their payouts. It is nice to see a number for added cash (added to payouts) for the pros but new TDs need a chance to learn wiithout being backed into a corner or they may choose not to run events in the future.

My $0.02 :)

Absolutely not. Let the market decide.

If it's a PDGA sanctioned tournament, there are already requirements for payout. Other than that, the TD shouldn't have to give advance notification of anything. If he does want to advertise, that's great, as it gives players more information to make a decision. If he neglects to include some info (and competing tournaments do offer that info) he'll lose market share to his competition. If he pays out in a way that is perceived as unfair, he'll develop a negative reputation.

If you're going to require payout info on the flyer, what else would you require? Pin positions? Basket types? Tee pad material? OB locations? Exact starting times of 2nd round? All available lunch options within a 10 mile radius including menus?

I would much rather see that TD reports be made public after the fact.

All excellent ideas Jim. I don't know how you do it!

Payouts on flyers may be possible with things like the USDGC or other invitations when the field size is known, but then what is the point of the flyer, when the field is already set?

What I think would be useful, to both the TD and the prospective participants, would be to state the payout philosophy, as in:

Open: 100% payout of entry fees plus 50% Added Cash
Master: 100% payout of entry fees plus 35% Added Cash
Womens: 100% payout of entry fees plus 15% Added Cash
Prize Divisions: 110% payout of entry fees in retail value plus Players Package $15 retail value.
Amateurs: 100% return of entry fee in event value plus trophies top 5 each division (Mens, Womens)

Something like that would be very useful IMO.
