Hey Blake,

I appreciate all of your articles...they have helped me tremendously over the past few years. However, I do have a question.

I'm plateauing at 350'. I know my technique needs improvement. I've noticed that when I throw, my plant foot seems to be always at 90 degrees from the target. I read in your article that it should be between 45 and 90 degrees. Is this something that could be limiting my hip rotation, or limiting my distance? Any ideas?

Just to give you some info on my throw, I have plenty of velocity on the disc, but not enough spin on the disc. I have been told my many seasoned pros that my arm speed is really good, yet I can't get the d. Just an FYI.

Thanks again!

hrm, i typed a reply to this earlier today but it didn't go through.

as for the plant angle... planting at an angle less than 90 degrees ensures that the hips will drive open. planting at 90 does not always yield the same result if the pivot does not occur and cause the hips to drive through.

as long as you have a distinct pivot after the plant and know that your hips are indeed driving through leading your upper body, you should be doing okay here.

i know that when i am throwing well i can really notice the pivot and that my toes are pointing somewhat in the direction of the target. this is also the case with most of the good players i have seen and videotaped, that their toes are somewhere from 10-45 degrees from the target at the rip.

if you have good arm speed and are peaking D, chances are your limiting factors are timing and snap. arm speed does not mean you are getting a lot of rip.

Thanks for the info, Blake. I really feel that I'm not using my hips much at all for my throws. (I took 4 months off during winter and it killed my game...) I just practiced (in my house) planting my foot at <45 degrees and it really feels much better (more free) in my hips. That may be at least part of the problem.

Watching the videos you had posted was a help because I saw Justin Jernigan and Aleksey Bubis' drives and their plant feet were <45 degrees from the basket. From their finishes last year compared to mine, they must be doing something I'm not!

Thanks again,

Daniel

Truth,

If the basket it at the 12 o'clock position, your toes would be pointing at 10.30. That is your plant foot being at 45 degrees.
