I use the straddle putt exclusively. I have had no luck with any other putting style. My biggest problem with this putting style is using it on very windy days when the winds are gusting up to 20-30 mph. I consider any putt hard to make in these conditions, even a 10-15 footer. I watch other people putt in these same conditions with a more traditional style and it appears they have an easier time. I have been disciplined to staying with one style of putting, even when its not working. I have a hard time muscling my putts into the basket when the wind is gusting using this stance. Stokely says the key to putting when its windy is to keep the disc flat and level so the wind will have the least amount of effect on it. This to me has been very difficult. I have experimented with other styles, but when I miss I miss long. I am not sure at this point if I am hurting my game by staying with the straddle. I am curious if other players have a different putting style for wind? Do pros that use the straddle stick with it even when its very windy? Thanks for reading my post and please comment!

I think your analysis is pretty accurate. If you find a putting style that is easy to replicate that works well into the wind let us know. Wind plays havoc with putting, you just have to deal with it sometimes and learn to fight it. Stokley's suggestion is very valid, but for AMs its hard enough getting a perfectly flat and level putt in calm conditions.

What kind of putter are you using? That could make a difference. Plus your talking about 20-30mph gusting winds! Find me a person who putts well in those conditions, I play regularly with one of the greatest to ever play the sport and even he has difficulty on days like that. Constant wind you can adjust for, gusting is pot luck.

For me, (yes, I an AM) I use a SB DX Aviar for 90% of my putts using "regular putting stance". For longer putts (>30ft) I straddle with a Super Puppy. When it is windy, the Puppy never leaves the bag. And on really windy days, I will pull out the CT Challenger. Just like drivers when it is windy you need more overstable discs to fight the wind, same as putters. I recommend getting an overstable putter for windy conditions. You do not have to change your putt, do what ever works for you. Just keep the nose down in a head wind.

Plus when playing windy days, concentrate on leaving your approach shots within 10ft of the pin. If your drive leaves you 30ft out with a big windy putt, take your medicine, lay up and leave the hole with a 3. I have seen many people go for the big putt for two, over shoot and end up with a 4.

just like learning different shots, regualar sidewarm tomahawk, thumber

learning other putting styles will help your game. You can never have enough shots to use. Also get out there and practice in the wind, so you know how a headwind/tailwind/sidewind, does to your disc. And finally good luck, we all stuggle with putts heavy wind.

well sais kris, i also use an overstable midrange on windy days it fights the wind better than a traditional putter!! I exclusively putt stradle style with the exception of real windy days!! Using a lofty type putt in the wind is asking for trouble. I remember 1 occasion , iwas putting from about 15 out , i lofted my putt and the wind just carried it away.It pushed my disc about 100 ft down wind. 30 mph wind is just brutal!!!! play smart and lay up when you need to!! :D

I like Climo's advice on driving (or approaching) to a certain sector w/in the putting circle...where you can use the wind to your putting advantage. Placement golf! Strategic course management!

Yeah but not all of us can place it within a certain sector w/in the putting circle. When you got mad skills like Climo you can handle that level of quality, the rest of us are just happy to be within the putting circle.

Placement within the circle isn't as difficult as it seems, it just takes a little more practice and focus. I know when the wind is blowing 20-30, easier said then done. But if you can learn to harness that advantage, it will shave strokes off your score. I have always said that I would rather have a 30' tailwind putt vs. a 20' headwind putt. At least you know what it is going to do, straight and down.

My point is that if you can place it 30 feet past the basket with some level of precision, why not just leave it under the F'in basket?

I Push putt Everything inside 25 and the wind is just a Biotch.
Putting like that into a headwind is ridiculously rough and at least with a tailwind you know it'll be going down controllably.
Within 25-40 I throw a spin putt from a standstill and these are much easier to control in the wind(but i'm not good with them close up for some reason)
anything 40+ is a jump putt which can get destroyed by certain winds..

Laying up in the wind is the best advice you can give someone!
