I just started out playing DG. Does anyone have any tips on improving both my grip and the rip point.

Specifically I am having trouble getting the disc to rip at the right time.

Welcome to the addiction! ;)

Remember you have to be paitent, too. It won't all come at once and it will probably be a couple of months before you're able to get a decent rip with any consistancy. If you follow the advice on the Disc Golf Review website and take the time to practice to improve you'll be very happy with your overall results.

Judging from your ava'tard...you might want to shave your palms! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif :D

Seriously, find a 'course pro' to work with you individually...

Start out throwing as slow as possible and concentrate on the rip. You can muscle a few shots every now and then if you want, just to see why you should be slowing down your shot too : ). Work on one thing at a time. Decide like, ok, today I'm going to work on releasing it flat. Or feeling the rip. Or trying to get a good grip. Or time anything. Practice driving with putters, midranges and drivers. Stay away from the newer high speed discs. Like Flash, Orc, Beast are no no's. Some people might say oh they're flippy. Which can be true for them, but you don't want to throw something just because its not too overstable for you. You want to throw discs that perform best at the speed at which you can release it. Once you start getting 250-350ft you can move up to the next higher speed of a disc if you want. Always be aware of getting the nose of the disc down(the disc flies much better for many shots), this is talked about alot at discgolfreview.com instructional articles. Make sure your wrist is in the down position throughout your throw and not just when you reach back. Make sure you're not rolling your wrist counterclockwise when throwing. Go out to a field and practice drives, as often as you do that, go to a basket that is not being used by anyone else, and practice putting. Watch some video's of pro's and find a person at your local course that looks like they know what they're doing, kinda simalarly to the pro's you've seen, and go around with them and learn from them.

: ) These are just some thing I keep in mind. I have been playing for less than a year, and probably usually don't throw farther than 300ft.

Yes . If you want to learn from some of the better players in DFW come out to the Vet or Zboaz for a mini, most of them are usually out at one or the other. Nolan Grider (http://pdga.com/tournament/playerstats.php?PDGANum=13219) offers lessons for a small fee if you want to go that route (that way you get all of his time without all of the distractions), if not then John Maiuro (http://pdga.com/tournament/playerstats.php?PDGANum=10019) , Chris Pepperling (http://pdga.com/tournament/playerstats.php?PDGANum=15024) , Clayton Bethmann (who needs to pay his dues for this year so I can pull up his stats ), and a handful of others would be more than happy to talk with you if they have a few minutes. They are all very approachable and great people. If you come out to the Vet come talk to me and I'll introduce you to them, I'm the funny looking bald guy who has all the plastic :D.

After posting all of that and seeing the resources that I have to become a better player it's amazing that I still suck at this game . I guess it would help if I actually took the time to work on my game .

Ive been playing a year and a half, and while my entire game has improved, ive noticed that lately my drives are fluttering out of my hands. In an attempt to get more spin, ive been pinching my index and thumb together, but all i get is flutter. I throw around 360', and with a cleaner snap i think id get a lot more, any ideas?

To get more spin you want a tighter grip with all 4 fingers pressing the rim into the palm, not up to the thumb. I wouldn't be surprised if a tighter grip with your index finger would create more spin, but I know I've heard that tightening the lock fingers creates more spin.

Also, since you've been playing for year and a half and can throw 360 you probably do this already, but I notice when I keep my wrist down throughout the entire pull, like keep focus on it durign the pull not just when in the reach back position, the disc flies with much less flutter.
