I do believe that the way I throw firechickens a proline would last 9 holes.

I still own and throw a large stack of the older Pro Line Firebirds (translucent plastic...more like Champion plastic than like the new Pro plastic used for the Orcs and Beasts).

These older Pro Line Firebirds do not get beat up. I have one that is at least 6 years old...it's my primary thumber, and has endured the limestone rocks and cliffs of Pease Park without much noticable wear.

Since I still have a stack of these, and about 5-6 CE FX's left in the garage, I'm not sure I'll be throwing the new Pro Firebird...

Man I have a white 166g of that old Pro Run, and I've had the exact same experience. That thing has plunked tree after tree, and been dropped right on its edge after a couple thousand thumber/chops. I've never had any other disc hold up like that original Pro Firechicken.

Robbie, that's the precursor to the current Champion plastic.

These Firebirds are the new Pro, SE-ish, plastic. Being FL's I wonder how well they fly...looks like I need to acquire one and find out. I switched from CE FL's to CE Eagles because I didn't like paying $30+ for them.

i have a green pro firebird that has been in my bag for well over 2 years as my main firebird.

My favorite ProLine firebird is the one they gave away at 2000 worlds. And the best thing about it, is that it is probably one of the only Innova discs that says Discraft on it. The right price could talk me into selling it. Still mint

Mar 11 2005, 05:15 PM
What do you mean "it say's discraft on it"?
Could you post a pic? I might be interested...

Come to think of it, my Proline Firebird has been in my bag for over 3 years now. Impressive disc! Not quite as overstable as when new, but it has become a long headwind driver with great glide.
I traded Big Black Dog a blue flat~top 1st run Pro-D Wasp for it when he still lived in DFW...and before his Discraft sponsorship. Last I heard he still has it in his quiver.

I have one that is at least 6 years old.

You sure about the age of that firechicken, Rooster? KC Pro would have been around in 1999, and CE would have been relatively new, but I don't recall the ProLine moniker being used before Q4 2002. (I do agree that the old ProLine firechickens are more durable than the current Champs.)

Not so sure anymore....

I could have sworn I bought that disc before I moved to Austin (5 years ago). Maybe it just seems like it's been in my bag a lot longer. I guess it could have been '02.

Regardless...it's been a helluva disc.

Think the ones you guys are talking about kind of like champ firechickens with the old proline stamp. new ones are different plastic the new pro plastic.

allright !! how do the pro bird compare to ce and champion??

Mar 16 2005, 02:14 AM
My big question isn't about the comparison, since I'll assume that they are less stable than their CE and Champ counterparts. What I want to know is whether or not they flip in headwinds. The only time I bring a chicken out of my bag is in those kind of conditions.

(bump)

Any reports???

jeterdawg
Mar 23 2005, 09:24 PM
I finally got to throw one (sorry for not reporting!). They are very much like a well broken-in ~170 gram CE firebird, without much skip on the end. Although alot of the course had sand...

It throws very straight for me, with a decent amount of fade. It flexes just a tiny bit with a modest headwind thrown flat with lots of power.

Plastic is pretty good, hasn't gotten any knicks yet, but we'll see. I plan to play alot in the next few weeks, so I'll report more later.

Mar 24 2005, 11:38 AM
Thanks dawg! What's the glide like? Got my first ace with an older Proline firechicken. Since then I haven't had one in the bag because I find the newer ones don't have the glide and are more overstable. I've since switched to Talon's / Pred's. Sounds like these newer Proline's might make their way back in...

jeterdawg
Mar 24 2005, 11:45 AM
Yeah, the Pro FB (I got a 174 I think) has alot more glide than the candy "Pro line" and Champion line. Don't get me wrong--it's still got overstability, but glides very nicely. Unless you get a candy one lighter than 168 or so, it's just too overstable for alot of holes that I'll use the new pro one with. It sucks that a Champ Teebird or another champ disc doesn't fly like the Pro FB, because I'll be hesitant to use it much around trees. Great disc though. I'm planning on stocking up a few from this season's tourney's.

Mar 24 2005, 12:58 PM
this is just a general question about Pro plastic...

I bought a Pro Orc when they first came out and the plastic was nearly as undurable as DX. It was so soft and almost felt like rubber. Not to mention it flew like a Valkyrie. Super understable compared to the Champ. Definately not high grade plastic at all. Not even in the same league as Discraft's X plastic. Have they improved the plastic since then or what?

It kind of makes me wonder why they would put out the less stable FL mold over the FX when the Pro plastic allready seems to make the discs WAY less stable to begin with?

atreau3
Mar 24 2005, 01:08 PM
the 2nd run of pro orcs are definitely more durable... still not close to discrafts X in my opinion.. i throw the 2nd run pro orcs ONLY when there is no chance to hit a tree, to be safe.

Mar 24 2005, 03:26 PM
Since the Champ Orc is my favorite long Driver, i picked up two Pro Orc's the day they came out. First 5 throws they were excellent. Then after really mild damage to the disc, they were out of control.
So i was skeptical about buying a Pro Beast when they came out right after the Orc.

But i read on Ask Dave D's page that they re-vamped the Pro Plastic and now the Pro Beast is my favorite pure distance driver. I've been using it for over 2 months and the only changes it has made are +420' drives and a dead straight line with a slight hyser fade at the end (RHBH).

When my local dealers (M2 Discs) get the Pro Valks, Pro Firebirds, and especially Pro Starfires TONIGHT i will be the first one over there!!

(I would really enjoya re-run of Pro Orcs with this new and very much improved Pro Plastic BTW.)

Well since this thread has goTTen off topic let me fix it. I threw my new Pro Firebirds today and they all flew consistently the same. I will definitely have one in my bag because they are much less stable than the Champion. It takes so long to get a Ch. Firebird to the point that the Pro Firebird is at brand new, it is a no brainer. It has great glide for me when thrown with hyzer release. Very fast and predictable. Just ordered a bunch more.

Would you say the flight is similar to the Starfire {Pro}?

And...Did you throw any thumbers with it? If so what were your thoughts?

Here's how I'm going to rate discs from now on:
Est. date
of run: Feb-05
Brand: Innova
Plastic: Pro
Disc: Firebird
Color: White
Type: Distance Driver
Speed: 9
Glide: 4
Turn: 0
Fade: 2
Durability: 6
Primary use: Straight drive with modest left fade
Pros: Faster than Champion, less stable, more glide, very straight flight thrown hard
Cons: Innova's pro plastic is not quite right yet as far as durability
Field test: Thrown flat, no wind, goes straight. Thrown hyzer, goes straight still, but more fade on the end.

I used a 9x KC Firebird for thumbers { the grippy, flippy 9s} and was curious how these would stack up.

Apr 04 2005, 12:35 PM
I don't know how this compares to any other firebirds since I don't throw them. However, I suspect is is way less overstable, so much so that it is a totally different disc. However, for my taste, this is a sweet disc. In terms of stability and flight pattern, it is similar to the pro teebirds, but is much faster. Don't know how it will beat up, but so far, I really like this one.

jeterdawg
Apr 04 2005, 12:48 PM
That's an understatement. They are way less stable. I think the only way to get the Firebird that most people are looking for is to beat in a Champion one really good. I like the light ones (~165) for that long, straight hyzer with a big skip on the end that can hold up in a headwind. The pro line has its niche, but it's not quite stable enough for the shots I thought I'd be taking with it.

Apr 12 2005, 02:32 AM
I jsut started playing recently butI have 3 years of playing ultimate a lot behind me. I bought the Pro Firebird and have a tough time tossing it. I get a nasty left curve on a lotof my dirves, more so than when I throw my other discs. Any pointers on throwing techniques/the firebird itself would be appreciated, thanks.

xterramatt
Apr 12 2005, 04:02 AM
keep the nose down, release it horizontal to the ground, not "uphill". as you get better with the disc and throwing golf discs in general, it will go straighter for you before that predictable left curve.

Another one, keep the disc close to your body during the final toss pulling the disc across your chest, like you are starting a lawn mower (pull cord). If the disc is coming around your body in an arc (your elbow bend doesn't seem to change) you are losing precious power on the disc needed to get it to stay straight as long as possible.

The Firebird is a tough disc for a beginner to master (even a seasoned Ultimate player). your best friend is a big field, a bag full of your drivers, and a handful of tips (http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=278165&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=11&o=186&fpart=1). It seems the ultimate distance secrets thread has vanished? Does anyone know where it went? It was chock full of good info.

Anyway, good luck, the firebird will not your distance driver, but it will become a predictable disc for certain types of shots. As you get better, it will become as trusted a disc as you have in your bag and will help you out on windy days.

Matt

I didn't feel like starting a new thread, b/c I just wanted a quick answer, sorry for the drift... it's somewhat related though...

I like throwing grenades for overhand throws, and really overstable drivers do the ticket (ie. Monsters, Flicks, etc...) but stuff like the Talon and the Flick are too thin (the rim is too shallow) I also want to get a disc that is 150 class, and champion/Z etc.

is there anydisc, that is A) Ultra Overstable Driver B) Deep Rim C) 150 class TPU plastic.

thanks... back to the thread...

I threw the Pro Firebird, and it's pretty sweet!
