Will anybody be able to resist this thread? It involves a list of favorites and it involves Texas. We'll see.

List the best 5 courses in the DFW metro and explain why.

I'm suprised we Texans have been able to resist it this long...
1) Cedar Hill Lorch Park -- a) because there are actually two courses there, b) degree of difficulty, c) will help build skills, and d) good mix of long, short, wooded, and water holes;
2) Lewisville Lake Course -- a) camping available, b) lake c) which of course gives a couple water holes when the water is up at the lake, d) always clean and well maintained;
3) Fort Worth Z-Boaz -- a) degree of difficulty
4) Crowley Bi-Centennial Park -- a) 4 different tee pads, all dirt :( however, that make for short, med., long, and pro pads.
5) Arlington Veteran's Park -- long course...I always need work on my long drives...plus it is where I met my husband :)

gosh its a wonder no one has ever started a top5 DFW courses thread before!

in no order:

ZBoaz - 2 tees, 2 pins on most holes. long enough to be long. technical enough to be challenging.

Audobon - under mentioned, under rated (maybe cuz its frequently under water) but really one of the top 2 in DFW.

Veteran's - classic disc golf, 3 tees, 2 pins on almost all holes plus championship tees on many holes. its is showing some wear in places, but still a very well balanced course

The Beaver at Cedar Hill - well planned design with plenty of room to grow longer. enough technical shots to make it challenging. many holes are good GOLF holes. going from short, tight to long, open so quickly keeps ya on your toes. and the pond is beautiful!

if i had to pick a fifth it might be Jimmy Porter, might be Green Belt, might be LLWoods fromthe longs with sidewalk/beyond = OB.

worst DFW courses in no order:

The Coyote at Cedar Hill - in its current, brand new iteration it is not really ready for prime time. too short, too random. but it WILL be one of the greats when the changes i've heard about are in place. if you can find a basket just stand on the tee and throw down and to the left. you wont go wrong!

BB Owens - not really too bad, but nothing special

Lake Lewisville - WAY too many down and to the lefts. a silly, short course that isnt even all that technical.

#1 Autobaun in Garland. Look past the no tee pads and the home made baskets and you have a championship course.

#2 Z Boaz in Ft. Worth. Too long away for me to play a lot, but it is a great course.

#3 Crowley. Add tee pads and clean up the rough some more and it will be one of the top courses in the state.

#4 Arlington. Good course with a wide variaty of shots. Whene the original 9 holes are included, it becomes my #1 course in Texas.

Because I have not played Cedar Hill yet, this is hard. So I have a tie

#5 Lake Lewisville/ Irving Fritz Park.

Lake Lewisville is one of the most popular courses in the area. With the extention of 2 holes this last year, it cut out two easy birdie holes and made them much harder.

Fritz Park Irving is posibly one of the best 9 hole courses I have ever played. If the city would let the back 9 ever be used again, that would make it a top 5 and maybe even higher.

Honorable mentions.

Grapevine Bear Creek - Nice mix of shots and fun to play. I usually play a shot from each tee box. All the holes have alternate pin placements too.

LL Woods Lewisville - when played in Macemans Tournament rules, this course can kick butt, but it is really just a pich and putt course.

McKinney Wilson Creek - great course to take the family too, their are alternate grass tee boxes that make the course a little tougher.

GreenBelt Carrollton - Not a popular course, not many trees, but you have to play smart any time you play hear or you will be wet.

Jimmy Porter Carrollton - Another very popular course. You need several shots on this course and there is trouble lerking around every bend.

Course that may be in the top 5 when put in.

Both courses at Flag Pole Hill, one of which will hopefully be put in this summer.

One or both of the coruses at Cedar Hill when I get to finally play down there.

cedar hill, audubon, lake lewisville, the vet, z- boaz. and if you had said top 6 then crowley would have made it. to much typing to say why but if you've played them you know why they are the best.

1. Cedar Hill - Two courses! I like coyote course mostly cuz of technical throws.
2. Lewisville Lake Park - what a great course to play!
3. Vetern's Park - Long throws! It helps me to increase my throws!
4. Z boaz - It is very fun course!
5. Bear creek - My home course where I play minis and all my four aces happened in there. Long and Short tees with two different pin placments. It helped my skills since.

Favorite list
1.Lake Park Lewisville
2.Bear Creek (before the incident)
3.The VET
4.Jimmy Porter
5. Alex Clark

These are my favorite/funnest course to play.
Immpossible to say the BEST in DFW. Best for what? Casual, tourneys, testing your game, or having a fun time?

Mar 09 2005, 12:58 PM
Well I may be a little bias on the questions, but hear are my answers anyway...

#1 Z-Boaz... Hate to give it to them because I love Veterans so much but this course has come a long way. If played consistantly this course will make you into a great player. It makes you throw just about every shot in your bag and still leave you feeling like you should have done better... I commend Brian, Brad and Steve for what they have done to that course...

#2 Veterans Park... I think that this is one of the funnest places to play in the metroplex. It has great people, competition, a texaco half way though and the club has always been amazing. I don't think I have ever really seen this course in bad shape because of the hard work the Qs and other ADGA members do along with the city...

#3 Cedar Hill is awsome and will more than likely be the best set of courses in the metroplex soon enough but they have a little work still to be done to make it the champion caliber courses that VET and Z-Boaz are... Want to thank Brian L, Jason and Ganetta and the rest of the crew that made those two courses happen. Don't worry Brian with a little bit of help these will be the best soon...

#4 Crowley... I love the format of this course, with the three different tee pads this course it has a nice variety of holes. I think that Ron and Gill did a great job of getting this course in. I really like the gold tees, makes this more of a champion caliber course and is almost impossible to shoot under par with the wind out there.

#5 Tie Autobaun/Lewisville I love the format of Autobaun, but the tee pads and baskets stink. If they ever put some work in to put those concrete pads and get some new baskets that course would probably be it the top 3... Lewisville is not a very hard course and that is what is keeping it tied with Autobaun. I love the giant tee pad and baskets are top notch. I love the scenery and the people out there are great. I think if this course was a little more challanging it would rate a little better on my scale. I love a course that I have to shoot well to shoot under par...

I would have to agree with Pepper on his top 5 picks other than the fact that I call it "Audobon". Hard course to play and even harder to spell correctly. :D The five courses that Pepper has listed have to be my top 5. I haven't given much consideration yet as to my exact order. Too hard to think that much on spring break.

dangit! i forgot crowley!!! i'm an [*****]... and its too late to edit my post. crowley is in the top 5 for sure. lots of tee choices - its plays from super dink to super long. and has some very nice technical challenges. perhaps the most underrated/underappreciated course in dfw.

Frank, you know something I don't??? clearing has already been done on one of the courses. Approval was waiting to put the baskets in. The lower course already had approval and they were making sleeves and tweeking the layout last I talked to Dirk.

They already have the baskets.

Pepper has the right idea!!! Those would be my top 5 as well, in no particular order.

bambam
Mar 09 2005, 07:19 PM
I like Pepper's picks, but my order looks more like this;

1) The Vet
2) Z-Boaz
3) Crowley
4) Cedar Hill - Beaver Course
5) Tie between Audobon and Lewisville Lake course

The top four all have excellent shot variety and plenty of risk/reward decisions. Audobon has several holes that require an actual 2nd shot :D And Lewisville Lake course is always an adventure... it's short, so if your drives are on, it's a birdie-fest. If your drives are off the mark, however, it can be a painfully long day.

The only REAL problem I see with this list of mine is all the courses, except for Lewisville, are at least 40-45 minutes away from my house. :(

Mar 09 2005, 11:48 PM
There are 7 groups that have to approve anything in that park. Last I hear all were done except the neighborhood next to the uppercourse. Lowercourse had already been approved.

The idea was to put pin placements and move the baskets around so that neither course gets too much worn. Than and the lower course is unplayable after a big rain or in the spring.

Dirk is the only one I would listen on that one.

We almost had White Rock Lake, but something happened and the local nieghborhood came out against it. I am not even sure if it can be set up again. That was a good course.

1. Z!
2. Vet
3. Crowley
4. cedar hill (going there this weekend)
500. Lake Lewis vile (unlefty son of a bastage course)

-and this concludes the list of courses I have ever played on.

Mar 10 2005, 04:00 PM
1. Z-Boaz (if Short Pins on #2, #8, #18) alt pins blow donkeys on those holes IMO #8 short is one of the best holes out there.
1a. The Vet (8 years ago)The Original was the SHIIIIIIIITE!
2. Autobaun (Better baskets & it could be my favorite)
3. The Vet (current)
4. The Lake @ Lewisville
5. Cedar Hills (Needs time and traffic to creep up list)
5a. Z-boaz (the set up we played this year)short pins on holes mentioned above are SOOOOOOOO much better on each one of those. Not saying all the long pins aren't good, some of them are much better.

Mar 11 2005, 04:02 PM
There is a reason why you have not been back, because the courses that surround that area are so much better... Audubon, Lake Lewisville, I would even say Jimmy Porter is better than BB... If I lived near the course I would play it but with the amount of good/great courses in the metroplex now some of the old originals are being left out of my mix... I would have to say that Grapevine (besides all of the cops giving everyone tickets) has become one of my top choices recently with all of the new pin placements and holes, the shorts are still a little easy but the longs will give you a challange...

Hero,

I would have done just that, but we were there at 6:00am Thursday and I'd have hated to get you out of bed just to show us around.

We got to Lorch before the gate was open. If you look at the various signs posted outside the gate, it could open at either 5:30, 7:00 or 8:00. We just parked by the gate and hiked the 1/2 mile to the course. After a little searching, we found #1 Beaver and played without much searching for holes. The mist rising from the pond made for some cool photos. This is certainly the greenest park I've played in Texas. I was wondering, however, what's the deal with #13? Does anyone ever not 3 that hole?

2nd course was Z-Boaz, which was much fun. We did get lost on that one for lack of signage. Still, top notch golf.

Then it was 3 days of San Saba for Houck's last hurrah. It was the greenest I've ever seen that place and the weather was fairly perfect. I recommend you make time to visit before it's gone. I suggest two days to be able to play each one twice.

#13 on the Beaver is "The Hook", and no it is NOT a guaranteed 3. If you hit the 1st trees you are in trouble. If you throw your drive too far, it's a tough 3......at least until more traffic beats the underbrush and briars up.

Top 5 in DFW:

1. Veteran's Park (Arlington) - I learned how to play on it. It took me forever to shoot par. I now live 4 minutes away. You have to love the beauty of the park, mix of holes, and Mach 5's.
2. Lorch Park (Cedar Hill) - I've played each course there 3 times now, and they are very challenging. So far I haven't had perfect weather, so there's still hope to shoot well under par! Wooded holes and variety of shots make for a great round. All that's left is a little clearing and concrete pads.
3. Bicentennial Park (Crowley) - 4 sets of tees per hole, and a very challenging mix. Lots of shule for errant drives. Pretty long course with some crazy holes in there. Concrete pads on either/both White/Red (Int./Adv.) tees would be awesome.
4. Z-Boaz Park (Ft. Worth) - I never seem to play it much, but it's very challenging, many long, many tight holes, much shule. Concrete pads are a plus!
5. Audubon Park (Garland) - This course has some great holes. Yeah the baskets are ugly at best, and it's ALWAYS muddy, but with those two items fixed up, it's a great course.

I pick these 5 because they are championship-caliber courses. I wouldn't mind playing at any of the following either:
BB Owen (Dallas) - concrete pads, always mowed, quick hyzer-prone round.
Lake Park (Lewisville) - Gorgeous park, runway-sized concrete pads, great baskets, very fun round.
LL Woods (Lewisville) - It's near Lake Park, so why not?
Greenbelt (Carrollton) - Going the entire round without messing with the creek is an accomplishment. A fun, easy round, and now a few concrete pads!
Jimmy Porter (Carrollton) - Pretty easy, but still some tough holes out there, and now also a few concrete pads!
Fritz (Irving) - It is a GREAT 9-hole course. Can't wait until I'm working right by it in a few weeks; I'll be there daily. Some water shots, many well-placed trees, and a very fun, quick round.
Andrew Brown Park (Coppell) - I enjoyed my sole round here. That was a while ago, so it'd be interesting to play again.

Don't care to play:
Bear Creek (Grapevine) - too many teenage stoners (now a nationally-known fact) crowd the course, but I do enjoy tourney's here.
Alex Clark (McKinney) - just so dang far away
Weatherford - [see directly above]
Shawnee (Plano) - nine holes of...what can I say, it's disc golf.
Springfield (Rowlett) - I'm probably the only person ever to have played it. Nine holes of 4 foot-high grass. Sound fun?

Never played:
Denton
Grand Prarie
The Colony
Saginaw
Elgin B. Robertson (tried, but couldn't find all baskets or any teepads!)

your not the only one to play Rowlette, I have played there once and never will again. Rowlette definitely gets top honors for being the worst in DFW thats for sure, on the other hand Elgin isnt a bad course once you learn where all the tee boxes and baskets are.

My top 5 in DFW

1. Z-Boaz

5. Lake Lewisville

I gerw up out in between Veribest and Miles.

Yeah the course here is pretty good, just windy all the time. Don't know what it will be like out there this weekend. Lots of campers are going to be there so some of the holes may be unplayable, or at best with tents in the way. Saturday you maybe able to play the course, but sunday will probably be out of the question. A better option would be to play the new 9 course at Brentwood park(NOT BENTWOOD). It's a pole course, for now, but a fun course no the less. It's on the north side of town. Get off the freeway at the Howard exit, go north till you get to forest park street, take a right tee 1 is by the trash can on the left. The mini is still scheduled to be played at the lake course on Sat. starts at 2 if you around then.

thanks for the info on the course around marine creek.

Ok, I have to re-rate the courses for DFW now.

#1 Lorch DGC in Cedar Hill. I am going to count both courses as one course. Not a championship course, but VERY fun to play. You will need EVERY shot in your bag to play all 36 holes.

#2 Autobaun in Garland. Look past the no tee pads and the home made baskets and you have a championship course.

#3 Z Boaz in Ft. Worth. Too long away for me to play a lot, but it is a great course.

#4 Crowley. Add tee pads and clean up the rough some more and it will be one of the top courses in the state.

#5 Arlington. Good course with a wide variaty of shots. Whene the original 9 holes are included, it becomes my #1 course in Texas.

Moody's #7 from the blues is listed at 900. it goes uphill. i'm guessing the elevation change is 15-20 feet. 4's are sweet.

Yesterday my mang Lee and I got out to Dallas area, and I got to play three courses that I hadn't played before.

Auduban - I liked it enormously. Leftie friendly and an ample supply of skill shots.

Jimmy Porter - That creek can kiss my ^ss. I got wet at least 10 times... and lost 2 rocs. Thank god they were not goodies. BUT if you find a texas 10 roc out there with a big ol' GB stamp on it, call the # for a reward, around $4.20. On the whole, without drainage issues it played nice. Some overlay issues, but it was pretty windy.

B.B. Owen - Probably pretty **** fun w/o wind. It had some nice, short 'skill' shot holes, and some other fun mid range holes as well. Very fun indeed.
