I was playing the other day and one of my buddies asked if I had ever heard of a disc with a fiberoptic light in it. I had never heard or seen anything about this. Is there a disc with a fiberoptic light built in?

I don't know of any true FO equipped discs. I'm not sure FO would be applicable-- doesn't FO direct light out the end of the fiber? Seems that wouldn't help much in lighting a disc.

The closest I've seen are the discs where a thin, flexible glowstick is installed in a groove on the inner rim.

Here's where you can find them--

Don't know about built in lights, but you can easily tape a small LED or a glow stick to the top of the flight plate.

Photon microlight II (http://www.photonlight.com/?Source=Google_photon)

this is what we use for nightgolf at the Z... a lil electric tape to tape it on the underside (works best with candy discs, but DX style are still quite visible) keeps it on all night, even on harsh rollers and hard tree contact. I LOVE NIGHT GOLF. And these seem to work very, very nice. One for a driver, one for a midrange, and the putter is on its own.

thill bobber lights are the greatest. just a little duct tape or freezer tape in the center and you see the whole flight. pulling on the red tip acts as on/off and they last about eight hours.

Do you use the whole thing or can you take out the light? It seems pretty large to be taping on a disc. The Thrill bobbers work great!

I have a lid that is 180g and has a little led red light in the middle that you can turn on or off with a dial on the underside.

It's called the FlashFlight.

Check it out Here (http://www.flashflight.com/gallery6.shtml)

The disc has fiber optic cables running on the underside of it and it looks pretty cool flying at night. A fun beach disc or late night in the parking lot.

FLASHFLIGHT (http://www.flashflight.com/index.shtml) Not sure if this one is PDGA approved, but they market it for flying disc sports...fiberoptics + LED - cool idea. Maybe major brand mfg's can use these with glow plastic?

Md, that is what we use now, and your right they work great, and look cool too flying threw the air and those things last forever.

thanks again....

it's very small and very light. As far as I can tell it doesn't alter the flight charectorists (I'm taping them to the bottom, I'll take a pic of it later and show yall)

Mar 01 2005, 01:53 PM
Do you know of any others besides Thill?

Mar 01 2005, 03:39 PM
Doesn't the flashflight thing like double the weight of the disc? I thought I saw them somewhere and it said they are 180g. I tried some really small LED's from a dollar store and also small glowsticks from a dollar store, and taping the glowstick on the top of the disc is what worked best for me. I coudln't see the lights very well when they were on the underside of the disc, and I was using champion plastic. Those flashflight things are awesome if they're not too heavy... The glowstick I used is probably barely a gram, about the size of a nail.

Does anyone know if taping something to the top will alter the flight alot more than taping something to the bottom? (in the middle of the disc of course)

There are several frisbee's with lights on them. I have one called an Orbitor. They're good for playing catch, not disc golf.

The Flash Flight is a great disc! Like Girlie said, it is turned on and off by turning a fitting on the bottom that makes the connection to the watch batteries that run the thing. They come in red, green, blue and I think purple. Discs Unlimited sells them, that's where I got mine.

There was a disc a few years back that had a 9V in the center. Man that was a biscuit! Then there is a disc that you can snap glow sticks in. It is..... well.... understable at best...

The Flash Flight throws like a lid. It's definately the best light up disc out there.

Mar 01 2005, 04:47 PM
Flashlight is definately the way to go. A friend has one that changes colors every 5 seconds, it is really sweet seeing it change mid flight. And your right about it being like a lid. Perhaps a bit heavier, but that is all, feel and flight are all the same. You can also get them at discoveringtheworld.com

Mar 01 2005, 09:00 PM
Ah nevermind. I was thinking the flashflight was a system of lights that you can put in any disc. I've seen something like that before, so you could hypothetically put it in a real champion discgolf disc. but like i said i think they're like 180g.

Mar 01 2005, 09:39 PM
The Fly by Night Owl is not "understable at best"
Friends and I play full rounds with only that disc and not one of us has problems with it turning over. We can rip them over 300 feet and not worry about overpowering it. Just release the disc with a little hyzer and it will flip flat, glide, and then fade pretty hard.

That just goes back to that saying about how you can adjust your throw to make the disc fly the way you want it to.

Just my $0.02

anita
Mar 02 2005, 01:25 AM
It can't be the same disc then. I think that they come in around 160g loaded. I am NOT known for my blistering power and I flip them even with a serious hyzer release. Flipping flat DIDN'T fly straight!

I have a question for you frisbee throwers out there. Back in the mid 90s, there was a disc that had a little plastic guy on the top. Some how when you threw it the little guy stayed facing forward, so it looked like he was flying the disc. What in the heck was that and can yo stil get them??

Now that daylight savings time has ended, I picked up some more of these Thill bobber lights for a round of glow golf last weekend. There really is no sense in using anything else, in my opinion. Glow plastic and glow sticks are nothing compared to these bobber lights; even underneath heavy leaves, you can see the bright light from the teepad. The picture shown is a severe blow-up and their actual size is about one to one 1/4 inches long, about 3/8" diameter, and almost feather-light.

I definitely agree with the duct tape/freezer tape recommendation; if you use crappy tape to fasten them and then your disc ricochets off a tree, the light can fall off. You can also buy a packet of velcro squares and cut them into 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch squares, and then easily transfer the light from one disc to another depending on your shot selection.

The package says 20 continuous hours, but that's for fishing; I concur with the 8-hour assessment [for DG]. They're $4.50 apiece @ the course. I've never seen one in Mega-Lo-Mart; I've looked in several.

I found the LED in wisc (thanks pat at highbridge hills)
they are the ultimate!!! using the red LED for distance drivers and green or yellow for midrange/putters, they stand out more than glowsticks. I can always find my shot...easier than the daytime.
Heavy duty duct tape works best with the upcoming winter approaching. We went through all winter last year with them and didn't have one mishap. the light shines through the snow even to make a large red-spot where it dove under.

I've weighed the discs and it seems to add about 3g with the tape.

I've also put them on the top of dx plastic and it actually stables the disc out! go figure.

Play more night golf and really freak those ball golphers out!!!

I use the lights and also carry a few glow discs. These lights make night golf so easy that we no longer allow people to place lights on the basket. Just throw and listen... :D/msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

There's an outdoor hunting and fishing store up in my neck of the woods called Cabela's that sells them for $2.99 a piece - I've heard that K-Mart has them for less.

I also have to give a very solid recommendation for the Fly By Nite Owl. I played a glow round for the first time on Halloween with it and loved it. It flies like any stable midrange and is really easy to see. The glow sticks were still glowing at 6AM (12 hours later.)

I would like to check the Thill lights as well, they sound like they are first rate.

The "Nite Flite Lites" from Sunkingdiscs that you just posted look to be exactly the same thing as the Thill Bobber Lights. Only the latter could probably be found for cheaper in fishing stores.

My Wal-Mart has them for 1.50 (Cash Money).

And they are perfect. But you have to have the newest Duct-Tape for optimal performence. The new stuff is twice as sticky but clear and it won't leave and "sticky" on your disc either.

And yes (whoever asked) these "fishing lights" have one LED in the tip. You push down for on, and pull back up for off. No recharge. No need. Unless you eat from a garbage can. :D

Bobber lights are sweet- superbright and easily taped on as only the little light needs to be exposed...
Also found 1.5" glowsticks in the fishbobber aisle, $3 for a four pack, we tape over each end of these- on top- and that leaves plenty of glow exposed to see...
I've played in glowleagues in KC and Florida. The KC league is all about the LEDs, they've been using 'em for like 3 yrs now. Funny in Florida I couldn't ever find the LEDs and it turned out they're illegal due to their purpose for nightfishing (at least that's what a fish-store guy told me...) However in florida I would routinely drop into wallyworld and pick up the 2" glowsticks meant to go in fake teeth in your mouth I guess. In florida the cool temps weren't an issue so clear packing tape worked well to tape them suckas right on there...
Now we're in Michigan and I can't find those 2" mouth glowies anywhere (illegal...?) but the fish dept here has a complete nightfishin selection so the LEDs and 1.5" glowies are handy enough to find.
We always tape on top, its easiest to find them and seems to have little adverse effect on the flight, Ducttape seems best if your temps get cold, as other tapes adhere poorly with cool weather. Most crucial is a clean tapejob, making sure to not allow air under or it will peel off. I usually rip a piece of duct to the legth of the LED's "stem" and then give an inch or so on either side to stick on to the disc. I stick the light on the tape first and contour it around then center it on the flight plate and press out any folds, etc...
I've had a few LEDs that didn't like to switch on and off very easily, so I had to leave 'em on all round, also had maybe two turn off when I whacked a tree, like the on/off was too loose. I've got six now and they all seem fine.
The small, cheaper, bobber glowsticks are workin good at our dark parks around here too but can be tougher to find in a park with lots of nighttime light, this was more the case in KC and probably why I saw less actual glow plastic being used, plus they bought in bulk and always had the LEDs cheap and still made money for the club I think...
My .02... have a glowin good time out there

My local WalMart is a "Super WalMart" and didn't have the LED lights. Lots of glow sticks but no LED lights, and the salesman had never even heard of them.

has anyone tried connecting a normal LED to a hearing aid battery?

I played night golf last night and borrowed a set up like this and it was brighter than anyone else's disc.

I went to Radio Shack today and attempted to connect an led to a hearing aid battery. I'm great with money, bad with electronics. The radio shack employee and I could not get the LED to light.

Has anyone tried this> >? any tips would be greatly appreciated.
