I bought 4 san marino rocs through the mail and recieved them yesterday. Pulled them out of the box and put them on the table after admiring them for an adequate amount of time. I sighed whitfully as I prepared to wait for warmer weather to try them out. I went in my room to play some online poker. After about an hour, one of the dogs brought me one of the discs to show me how he had improved it. I was just a flight plate... the entire rim was gone. I jumped up to see if the other 3 had suffered the same fate. Two more had chewed up rims. One was untouched.

I was mad but there was no dog kicking.
They don't know any better... my fault for leaving them out.
Never even got to throw them.

That BITES!

One Beadless Aviar lost to dog chew. Small diameter SM Roc lost from a knife wound from a bum at Fantasy Park.

No stories about dog-chewed discs, fortunately.

However, my buddy's border collie is a great asset on the course. The collie will retrieve discs on command from unsuitable lies such as from the bottom of hills and from creeks and streams. I have never seen him leave so much as a mark on a disc he has retrieved. He doesn't bother any discs unless he is told to get them. I've even seen him stand over a disc and bark when somebody left one behind.

I also learned the hard way. I used to leave my practice putters in the basket in the backyard. At first I blamed the kids for leaving my discs in the yard for the dog to chew up. Nope, the dog found a way to hit them with her nose from the bottm of the basket to knock them out then proceed to chew them up. Sneaky *** dog. :D

Don't be talking crap about Gateway it's better than DISCRAP. :D:D

Todd, that's an awful story. I hope you can get more of those San Marinos. I still have the one you sold me with the Shark stamp, I'd sell it back to you but it is prolly to lite being a 173.

When we first go our newest dog (already had to beagles who had no insterest in my discs) --- a 110lb Lab/Bloodhound mix --- he found a putter stamped with the 1991 PDGA World Dubs Championships from Round Rock.

It, along with a few hard Magnets are his chew toys in the back yard now. He's a smart dog, and had not chewed any of my other discs, and seems to know which discs are his, and which are mine.

I wasn't talking crap about Gateway. I personally throw some of their products. But, you will have to admit, if you are going to give a dog a disc to chew on, Gateway can be replaced Cheaper than Innova or Discrap and thats a good thing.

Yeah, but it can also withstand dog chewing longer than a DX Roc...gives you a little extra time to intervine....

My G/Fs dog got a hold of one of my "S" Blazes, and the dog only left a hole in the flight plate due to me pulling it from his mouth...had he let go, it would have just had a small indentation where his tooth was.

Plus, don't you think its REALLY ridiculous to spend so much for a Roc? I know certain models are supposed to be better than others (Ontarios etc. etc.) but come on...if you can't replace it within a day for less than like $10....whats the point!?!?

I saved a couple of those shard/rocs for myself. Thanks for the thought though.

I've never had any of my discs chewed up, but my husband had one of his putters, a brand new Magnet, severely altered by my dog.

None of my six dogs even give discs a second glance once they hit the ground. However, on the very first throw ever with the DX Stingray that is now in my bag (see Champ Stingray thread), an "Unidentified Flying Golden" apparently took a liking to it. I was on a church soccer field about to start some roller practice, whipped the new Stingray out there, it's rolling along about 200 feet out when this red/gold blur comes flying out of the adjoining woods. It only took a few feet for me to realize the dogs intent so I started whooping and hollering and running toward the disc/dog. He grabbed it still rolling about 300 feet out and kept right on running with it as if there wasn't a crazy person chasing and screaming at him. About another quarter mile and another soccer field later he dropped it without ever so much as looking over his shoulder and ran into the next patch of woods never to be seen again. I still believe the set of teeth perforations he left in the disc have made it the great roller it is today. :D:cool:

man, I have 4 dogs and I've never had a disc destroyed unless I used it as a tug. My dogs know what's a play disc and what's not...

My 9 month old golden retriever has learned pretty well she doesn't touch discs. Now if I could keep her from pulling stuff off the kitchen counter and destroying it I would be set. That and to mop up her own muddy paw prints on the tile floor. And not to chase the cats. And not to 'bark back' at my wife. And not to chew up her bed at night. Oh and not to pee on my tennis shoes when we sleep in and she doesn't get to do her morning bidness at 6:30am like she's used to... But other than that she is a great dog!

Feb 25 2005, 04:29 PM
My golden retriever has only showed a desire to have a disc in her mouth a couple times and its more of a "look I have a disc in my mouth, come give me attention" then actually planning on chewing on it. Mini's is a different story, she loves getting a hold of those and chewing on them. She also got a hold of my drivers licience, everytime someone asks for it I give them a bent and bumpy piece of plastic. When I take her to the park while I'm discgolfing sometimes she'll look at the disc like she knows she's supposed to want to do something (like retrieve it) but then kind of dismisses the notion. It'd be sweet if she was like that collie. Right now she's lieing down with her eyes close, in my bed.... at 230pm, she's spoiled rotten.

I have a champion roc that I lost in a practice field; luckily someone found it and sent me an email. I thanked her and asked where I could pick it up; however she offered to drop it off... Turns out her dog had been chewing on it /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif but after some careful "heat-treatment" on the chewed up sections it is flying better than new. :D

When i moved out of my mother's house i left behind my first disc golf disc (a DX gazelle). And about two weeks later i went back and my dog brought me my disc to show off that he knew i moved out. Silly dog. I have it on my wall now. Still with his two teeth marks/holes in it.

Tough luck Todd.
I could've told you that dogs LOOOVE expensive discs.

Years ago I was throwing maybe 30 discs on a football field. Only one was irreplaceable, a proto-Viper that I was saving for Worlds.

A dog out of nowhere sees me throwing a friz and tears across the field to where all my discs landed. Take a wild guess which one he picked to chew up.

Not that I was ****** at the dog, but I was a little ****** at the owner. The dog owner shows up and can't understand why a few holes in my $25-30 disc should be any problem at all. Like I'm seriously anal or something. Same type of guy that can't understand why a little dogcrap in the fairway is anything worth mentioning about.

I have had a few dog chewing instances but nothing super expensive or irreplacable. A few years a go, I got an early run tye dye cyclone and with my second throw with it, it landed about a foot from a fence and when i got about 50 feet from my disc, the dog in the yard on the other side of the fence runs towards me, lifts up the fence and grabs my disc and takes it back with him and chews it up. I started yelling at him and after he chewed awhile, he actually brought the disc back towards me and then let it go. The middle had a huge hole in and the room was virtually gone. I have not thrown a cyclone since

Tragedy: my 1st ever golf disc, a pumpkin-head Aviar. I threw it in a pond at The Grange. About a year later, it was finally fished out. I was so excited to have it back EXCEPT a dog pulled it out of the L&F box before I came to pick it up. Mangled to shards. BooHoo. :(
