How would you like your 2005 Texas state rep for the USDGC to be chosen*?
We need to start thinking about this now.
Here are some idea's (in no particular order) :
1. The mass lottery system .....Buy 1 ticket, throw it into a hat, winner pulled from hat. (There should be a few stipulations like -player must have played in at least 3 PDGA open, or open master fields.)
2. Highest rated player at the summer update..... send the highest rated player that has failed to qualify on his own.
3. Lottery system based on performance...... An open or open master player that places in the Top 5 of any TX b-tier or higher gets their name put in a hat for every time they placed Top 5 from now through the summer, winner drawn from hat.
4. State Rep Tournament .......throw a tournament for the State rep spot.
These are just a few ideas. I think that the #1 State of Disc Golf needs to let the players have a say in how their Rep is chosen........lets see what you think!!!!
*Disclaimer---- The State Rep may or may not be chosen from the suggestions posted here on this board.

The only problem with sending the highest rated player is:
What if that player only played in B and C tiers, never playing against 1000+ rated propigators?

either that or #4. that's what we do in Louisiana, we move it around from city to city every year.

What are the odds of that happening. They also must be willing to go and play USDGC.
At Rockhill, I don't think you have to worry about who you're playing against, you have to worry about playing the course. I only know of one hole, #3, you can kind of relax on and that will bite you in the butt if you relax too much.

Hole #3 is just begging you to relax so it can take a bite out of you. There aren't any holes you can relax on very much, and if the wind starts blowing there aren't any you can relax on at all.
There is also the concept that the State Rep spots are to be used to reward players that have made significant contributions to Disc Golf within the state that would not be able to qualify otherwise. Any thoughts on that ?

Great idea Gary but there would be too many back stabbings with the guys. We don't need a repeat of how Nez got his spot. :D
How about Texas stirs up the pot a little and sends a woman? Since I have played the event a couple of times I know how hard it is but who knows what a Texas woman could do. Des and Juliana are the only 2 women ever to play there. Lets add to that list?
Besides all the guys have plenty of chances if they really wanted to go.

The problem with the highest rated player is...if you only play TX tournaments against 950-980 rated players, you're going to have a higher rating than someone who plays against tougher fields. No?

how much would tickets be, what happens to the money? Not a bad idea really
2. Highest rated player at the summer update..... send the highest rated player that has failed to qualify on his own.
Highest qualified player who wants to go, all submissions go to Gary, or beter yet My-Hero. You have to pick a date that everyone has to commit to going, then pick the player before the cut off date. Then make sure that player goes.
3. Lottery system based on performance...... An open or open master player that places in the Top 5 of any TX b-tier or higher gets their name put in a hat for every time they placed Top 5 from now through the summer, winner drawn from hat.
To hard to figure out, and then again, you need to pick someone who wants to go.
4. State Rep Tournament .......throw a tournament for the State rep spot.
Been done, and why is he not doing it again this year/?? Could it be from not enough interest? (or the fact that he put way to much of his own money into it)
You have to base the pick on something up front. I can tell you that it is not an easy job to pick someone from a list of players. I did that and lost a friend. :(

It won't be 1, 2, or 4. Maybe some variation of 3, maybe more along the lines of recognition that Harold suggested a while back.
Variation of 3. Top 5 scores get 2 pts, top 10 get 1 point. highest point total after LOSO wins. I still like the TWC winner (you know the winner will be from TX) getting a spot if she wants one.

I better add that i'm NOT opposed to sending a woman. We have some great PRO women in this great state.
The USDGC is a unique experience that unfortunately not everyone gets to experience. I'm in the same boat as Himing, except without the dual citizenship. I've qualified 3 times, participated 2 times, and cashed 1 time. I'm not looking to be the Rep without earning it. In fact, i'd rather earn it the way i always have, by being one of the lowest scores at a qualifier.
I'm glad we are discussing it early. It's been rough on the Rep the last few years. Clayton Bethman hurt his ankle 2 days before the event, Nez was the only one that asked in time for the deadline, and Mike Grider didn't bring his A-game.
Glad to see the input so far.

Make it like American Idol or Survivor. Every person that wants an invite can state their case for a judging panel. Then we can vote out the notalentwannabes each week all the way up to the USDGC. I really have been trying to figure out a good way to send a woman every so often, but need to hear from the women to see if any of them would be able to attend if they had the opportunity. If we all say that we want to support the women and get them playing, I am ready to put what support I have behind them.

Des has shot a couple of 990+ rounds at the USDGC.
She has qualified for the event 4 different ways!
2005 Top 10 Money Winners
2004 US Womens Champion
2003 Regional Qualifier (Mad City Open)
2002 Womens World Champion
Many ways to get there. One Division, One Champion.
Yeti
Feb 25 2005, 02:08 PM
The Women's Nationals doesn't have qualifiers per say due to the wanting of maximum participation. They have National Championships for all Womens Divisions.
That would be a very noble goal to pay for a Texas Woman's experience to a National Calibre event just for Women. I let Des go to this event solo each year because she enjoys the great atmosphere of being around other women for the whole tournament. I have been there for the finals though, and you have never heard such a Unified Banshee Cry than the "two minute warning" of the last round of the USWDGC!
Gary, put the bounty up, or at least some of it, myself and others can help make it happen, maybe some raffle money.
Winner of the USWDGC trip must be an "official" Women's Texas Resident. (that excludes you know who, but she is already taken care of)
-Entry Fee
-Food Stipend
-Room Stipend
-Travel Stipend
Winner will most likely have to carpool up with some other Texas ladies, but $300-$500 might cover it! It sure would help someone to be able to go.
Des has shot a couple of 990+ rounds at the USDGC.
I only see 1: A 993 in 2003. With the next highest a 971 also in 2003. But then I don't live with her. :D

As for a comment on the original thread.
#3 seems like the best option for a lot of reasons
-Would help attendance at Texas A and B Tiers
-States best players would be up for the honor
-Takes the tough decision of who to send option out
-We unfortunately need another tournament in Texas
Cons
-More paperwork for someone to follow, it could be done later times though with results.
-It would be nice to pay the qualifiers entry, stipends, but creates a whole new burden of raising funds or collecting fees
Sounds like it could be a solid plan with more thought

I like the idea of the woman going to the womens tournie. Of any tournement out there, the women should go to that one (and the TWC) I think the person that goes to the USGDC should be able to compete with the top people there. There is not a woman in Texas (residents :D) that could even compete on that level. I think that entry should be given to a person that will represent Texas in golf game and in character. Maybe the TD's of 2005 should be able to vote on a person, maybe people could earn nominations or something. I really dont know how it can be done but I want Texas to be represented well.

Then from August 1st till next year, every qualifying event collect $1 from each players entry fee (in the Pro division only) and then the highest point leader who committs on going get his entry paid for out of the $1 fee's. (if there is enough, the fee could be 50 cents or maybe even less)

From Hackwood's journal.............
USDGC day 1 round 1
Things started out great, well sort of. I hit the line on hole #1, parked it, but missed a 12 footer for birdie. I was a little nervous with everyone watching and all. Well, a 3(par) is better than a 4.
I managed to throw 2 back to back good shots on hole 2, leaving me with an 80'er for birdie that i decided to lay up so i wouldn't go OB in the corner of the parking lot. Easy Par(4.)
On hole 3's tee pad i couldn't feel the left to right wind that was crossing the fairway so it didn't surprise me when my driver (cuz i can't reach it with an approach disc) drifted right, and landed in the schule, almost pin high. With an easy wrist flip, i was out of the woods, and nailed the 30'er for Par(3).
Hole 4 caused a little grief, okay A LOT of grief. I gripped locked my drive and threw it into the jungle on the right, only about 50' off of the teepad. My only option was to pitch it straight out to the fairway, so i did. On my 3rd shot, all i wanted to do was get near the drop zone's black mat where the unfortunate golfers must throw from if they end up in the "fake lake." Well, i didn't quite make it to the mat, i hit one of the little tree's half way there! Where the disc came to rest, i didn't think i could make it to the green, so i opted to lay up in between the mat and the "fake lake". That was easy, but now i'm laying 4 (par is 4.) Now i must figure out how to get around/over/through the circle of pines. I chose to try and hit one of the gaps up high, well that didn't work. The disc hit one of the pines, and bounced backwards into the "fake lake"(OB), now i'll be throwing 7 from the drop zone. Let's try to get behind those pines again......let's try a low skip shot this time......okay, that didn't work either. It hit one of the stakes that hold the infamous yellow rope, and bounced backwards into the "fake lake"(OB) again! Back to the drop zone, now throwing 9!!!! This time i opted to try the BIG TEXAS spike hyzer......it WORKED!!!! I'm on the GREEN!!!!! Looks like an easy two putt from here......ooops.......i ran at the 1st one a little too aggresively and left myself with a 20'er for comeback. **** it.....too low......i missed!!! Looks like that 3 putt carded a 12.
Only 8 over after 4 holes. On to hole #5, what's it like? :D
For those of you that haven't ever seen me play, John's version of my fourth hole is spot on, even if holes one through three were, shall we say, generous. :)
BTW, I guarantee I would finish better than DFL. I think I can take Rothstein. ;)

Mar 01 2005, 05:57 PM
yea......i didn't even want to begin to think about what *could* happen on hole #5 to Atwood.
Something like:
--Doesn't turn drive over at all, and it bails out left and SPLASHES into the REAL lake.
--Throwing 3, misjudges right lo left wind and splashes into the REAL lake again....SPLASH
--Throwing 5, thinks he can reach the other side but it's 400', and his disc lands 50' short.....SPLASH.
--Throwing 7, and thinking "well i didn't get the full ride out of that one, i can make it".....Nope......only 15' short this time!!!....SPLASH again!
--Throwing 9, i better just go around. Booms a hyzer to the corner.
--Throwing 10, nothing but a 200' upshot to the green
--Putts at 11, and 12, making the second putt.
Looks like back to back 12's! Okay, now we are 15 over after 5 holes(good thing #5 is a par 5, or we'd be 16 over :D). What's hole #6 have in store? :o

On to hole #5, what's it like?
yea......i didn't even want to begin to think about what *could* happen on hole #5 to Atwood.
Okay, now we are 15 over after 5 holes(good thing #5 is a par 5, or we'd be 16 over ). What's hole #6 have in store?

OK, here it is.
To get on the list, you must:
Finish in the top 10 scores (counting all players) in a Texas B-Tier or above between Aug 2004 and July 2005.
Be from Texas
There will be a fee ( that shows a committment to going ) required to be eligible. All proceeds will be used to pay the winner's entry fee and offset travel costs.
LOSO will be the last event. The winner will either be determined by their play at LOSO, or the winner will be drawn at LOSO.
I'll start digging through tourney results and post a list of eligible players on the LSDGA.com news area some time soon.

LOSO is the Live Oak Summer Open, right? Not that I have a chance in hell of qualifying, or that I'd even be able to go to the USDGC, but would you have to play in the LOSO to qualify as the Texas Rep? This would be interesting to know if the same format for qualifying is used for the coming years. I really hope to play in that tournament someday, maybe in 2 or 3 years.
gnduke
Mar 04 2005, 07:23 PM
Yes, LOSO is the Live Oak Summer Open, and it is the last event before the deadline for State Reps being selected.
I would prefer that some level of competition be involved, but some of the qualified players might not be able to attend the event. A drawing would allow all of those that qualified (and added money to the pot for the winner) an equal chance at getting the invitation.

Let us know what the fee is once you decide.
gnduke
Mar 17 2005, 07:46 PM
Based on last year's interest level, I was thinking around $20. That way only 12 entrants would be required to cover the entry fee, and any more could help cover travel expenses.
That's about how many serious contenders we had last year.

top 10 scores in a b tier. is that b tier por better, such as waco, assuming number8-10 doesnt get the exemption. and if you do get the exemption invite can you still qualify to be the tx rep and have everything paid for?

I would have to say no.
You should win enough if you win a spot to cover the cost of entry.
Since you only have your spot reserved for a month after winning one, not using it would be a big risk. Side bets are allowed if you want to come down and win some cash for the trip.

What if Scooter(Matt Hall) plays well enough at Waco(b/c he can) to earn a USDGC spot, but declines the PDGA cash in order to remain a bagger( :D), would he have to forfeit his USDGC spot as well?

I know the final drawing/decision is a few months away, but do you have any numbers crunched yet? May we have a sneak peek? :D
gnduke
Apr 21 2005, 06:22 PM
No.
I did some looking earlier, and decided that it should be a top 10 finish (by score, not division). Meaning that even if you are one of the top 5 Texans, if 8 of the top 10 were from outside of Texas, you might not make it.
Also that previous qualification did not remove you from the list of finishers. Meaning that if you finish 7th and 2 players above you are already in, you do not move up to 5th and qualify.
I expect to have 20-25 qualified players, still need to figure out how to do the cimmitment part. Meaning that you can't win the spot unless you are committed to going.
Meaning that you can't win the spot unless you are committed to going.
For what its worth, regarding my earlier nomination...
...I should be committed and so should anyone who thinks I should go.
Hope that helps. :)

There were 2 draws for the USDGC spot and John My-hero won them both. Someone called John and he said he was unable to attend so there was a 3rd draw and it was Alex "What a Final 9" Hughes.,
Wow, i feel honored. Thank you!!!! Here is a little more info on my plans.

I couldn't think of a better alternate!!!!! Congrats on that. Please keep that week open. My sister is in the Bahama's right now, and i have a call in to her......which she hasn't returned yet.
When i signed up for the Tx state rep lottery, that week was open. Well, it might not be open now. My sis is coming to DFW from Florida(where she lives) either the 1st or 2nd week in October. If she comes during the USDGC, you will need to attend it for the STATE of TEXAS!!!
I'll let you, Gary Duke, and Chris Himing know the moment i hear from my sis. She must be having too much fun in the sun right now.

Finally getting around to this.
Strictly point based. Based on performance against other Texans at B-Tiers or above in Texas from mid-July to mid-July.
LOSO has moved to the spring, the final event to be counted is the Coastal Clash. The winner has just 2 weeks to register before the cutoff for state reps.
Rules:
Winners receive 20 points at B-Tiers, 30 points at A-Tiers or above. Each place below that receives 1 point less.
All players receive at least 1 point for playing.
TDs get credit for winning unless they play in their event.
Only Texas players count. All other players are taken out of the results before finish order is calculated.
MPO, MPM, and MPG are eligible if they play the same layouts.
2005 Events:
Live Oak Summer Open '05
Coastal Clash '05
Outlaw Shootout
Mr. Jims
Oktoberfest
TX States '05 (A)
VPO Pro (A)
TX-10 Finals (A)
Piney Woods
2006 Events:
Big Show Cedar Hill
Big Show Z-Boaz (A)
Victoria Open
Red Rock Show
Pecan Park
TX States '06 (NT)
Paul Gyles Memorial
Live Oak Summer Open '06
Capitol of Texas Open
Waco Charity Open
Big Arms on the Brazos
Coastal Clash '06
21 events - 16 B-Tiers, 5 A-Tiers+
470 possible points.
If you go to all of the events and finish 10th (Texan) that's 260 points. 5th place will get you 365 points.
Leaders:

Hey if someone can pass along to Dagon Owen (and Emily) that the Panis family is trying to find him? He can reach us at

Looks like Joel and Vinnie have a chance to catch Mike now that he's a Father. Congrats MO!
Just in time for Father's Day later this month.

Time is running out for the players chasing Mike Olse.
Mike finished ahead of the chasers at COTO and again at Waco.
He holds a 26 point lead with only BAB and CCO left in this season's race.

I could have hoped for a little more drama going into the last event, but it looks like Mike has wrapped this up early. Even if he fails to show, he has enough of a lead going into the last event that no one can catch him.
But please attend the Corpus Christi Open anyway along with all other sanctioned events you can.
