Does there exist a Canonical List of Rocs? If not, can we try to put one together here? I think it's the kind of thing that should eventually become a Wikipedia entry.

I've been brainstorming attributes for the list. It's tough, because some Roc variations are notable for their Stamp, some for their Mold, yet others are known by their stamp but are really distinguished by their Mold.

I'm not much of an authority on this, but I think it would be cool to have. Here is what I'm thinking to get us started. Now, where are the experts?

There were 1000 spectator 2005 rocs made.

Also add triple rings, both Ontario and San Marino. There should also be some sort of breakdown in the Sannies and the Ontarios as far as domes and plastic blends. There were Sannies that were the original flat tops that were extremely hard plastic that had one flight then closer to the end of the Sannies there were some that had a big dome and were a softer blend that had a totally different flight.

You've taken on one heck of a task here that will probably bring about a good bit of controversy. I do wish you the best of luck tho.

just curious, how do you tell the difference between double and triple ringed SM's and ontarios?

In fact, you would figure Innova would have one of everything they've ever made, right?

cool idea. i think the original rocs were known as the "wings and rings rocs though.and they have a little 8 on the stamp. most san marino rocs have the bird stamp as far as i've seen, and are more like the rocs of today....

because if i am right....the location on the bottom only tells you where the disc was made :) I think even dave said the SBs were supposed to be patterned after the ontario mold.

Small diameter wings and rings first produced in 86, a few months before the Canada Worlds. The only color I remember was orange with the wings and rings stamp. I believe they were triple ring San Marino.

monumental task

Oh, I KNOW it's a monumental task. But I think it's worthy of the effort. :)

I also KNOW that I'm not the guy to do it. My list was just an example. I don't know that much about Rocs. But with the collective knowledge out there, I'll bet a close attempt could be made.

Sitting down with Dave would be a great start. Any volunteers?

The graffiti and big bird stamps were 2003 Champion rocs. There were 2 other stamps too, One Division, and a Zonedriven. 04 had 4 stamps too plus glow.

hehe - even Dave isn't "fully" reliable. As he stated the first original mold rocs were released in summer of 86 prior to Worlds in Canada. Actually that was summer of 87 - prior to Worlds in Toronto. The first ones had the "football" stamp, were fairly stiff, and came mostly in an off white color (I don't remember seing any football stamps on colored discs - but I was brand new back then). Shortly thereafter - the "wings n rings" stamp became the factory standard, and they came in yellow, orange, pink, and white. This lasted a whopping year and a half before the "new mold" roc was released. These were the original San Marinos, and also had the "wings n rings" stamp - don't remember all the colors available - other than there were more. I do remember (and still covet) a sweet run of "bubble gum pink" that I had to go through over 500 rocs - just to get 3 or 4 of. Very nice. The early run of SM's were not really stiff, or really flat. Around 1990 - they started running much stiffer rocs, and in '90/91 they had the best run of hard flat top rocs. Plastic blend changes yielded some domier versions of the SM's into '93 - and there was a softer mix about that time, but then came the Ontario Rocs......

From what I remember is the very first run small diameter SM Roc was 168g bright orange with Football stamp,. I've also got first run with Huntington Beach stamp and one from Vegas with Fantasy Flyer. My '87 Worlds Roc is white. These broke fairly easily like the old XD's did. I still use a Football first run for approaches.

The rare pink glow larger SM Roc's are very sweet. DTW and Snapper sold these. I've also got a purple glow SM Roc. My favorite Roc stamps were the DTW bird stamp and IFO skull stamp.

Roc on.

Why are modern Classic Rocs called "Classic Rocs"? Were they the original Rocs before they became the mold that we all know and love?

moolie
Mar 02 2005, 06:46 PM
Classic refers to the small mold diameter as oppossed to the larger mold used on what is today refered to as the "Roc". Classic tops out @ 175 grams and contemporary (for lack of a better term) goes as heavy as 180.

flynvegas
Mar 02 2005, 10:30 PM
The original small diameter Roc was only out for 2 years at the most. Then several years later they came back as the Classic Roc. Just like when the original Aero was remolded to make the Phenix, and then years later they came back as the Classic Aero. Demand for a good disc brought these back.
