I don't even care for champion Rocs. Rather throw DX Rocs. I would make a $25 donation but Jon has to promise me he would raffle off my Roc and then donate that money to E.D.G.E. that idea wasn't an option in the poll.(hehe)

kill 2 birds with one Roc...

Feb 23 2005, 10:32 AM
I'd donate $25 to the USDGC if I could choose the Roc I wanted, quantaties NOT limited on all Rocs, but limited on "collectors" Rocs.

I like it the way it is. Wait till the "frenzy" dies down. Order one of each stamp. Get a call from Zone saying one is not available. Order another glow and pay the extra five bucks because Jed was very said he was sorry and there was nothing more he could do. Know that you donated to a worthy cause and have some nice plastic to "throw" for it. Try not to collect rocs, even though you do have some nice ones, but not very many. And if, for some strange reason, no Rocs are left, realize that the USDGC made the money they needed for success!!!!

I think this year's internet dispersal was the best distribution yet, next year more of the same, albeit with more bandwidth.

Fight it out online.

With the database SNAFU, I think Zonedriven will be ready next year. I mean, these guys put on the USDGC, they can do anything they put their minds to.

Feb 23 2005, 11:05 AM
I think that poll is pretty scewed. That would be a huge purse from the donations to the usdgc if it was all going in to it.

Feb 23 2005, 11:28 AM
You are assuming that all the money goes to the purse. I am sure alot of it goes to running the tournement. It takes huge capitol to run an even like the USDGC and I am sure they have to cover some of the expenses related to feeding volunteers, players packages civic permits etc...

I agree that poll sucks. Are you serious john or are you just another whiner?
The system works fine even if some people don't get exactly what they want. The point is to raise money Mission Accomplished!!

Feb 23 2005, 11:36 AM
I'd do it the same way but have a 10 disc limit to individuals and a 50 disc limit for retailers.

Feb 23 2005, 11:45 AM
Maybe they should just ask for a 100 donation the the USDGC and you can get a custom made Roc, whith your choice of stamp (from a few choices of stamp/color combos) and color (give us a few choices) and weight. They could even have options like ice or clear or opaque which could make it cost even more. This would make sure you would get exactly what Roc you wanted, no more whining or asking for 10 billion dollars for a clear one 2 days after they are released. Also, from a collectivity perspective, they would be far more collectable. They could also limit the run to 1000 or 1500 discs or something...

I'm merely asking the question.

I'm interested in how people see the purchase of Champion Rocs, as support of the USDGC or as an investment toward future return. Looks as if it's about evenly split right now.

I'm interested in how people would wish to alleviate the perceived difficulty in purchasing. I posed some alternatives, some in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Most of these ideas I gleaned from the 38 pages of discussion on the other thread.

I've no reason to whine. Why would you say that? I buy a couple of Rocs every year, to support the event and to hang on the wall. I don't really care about color or weight or design. I do it to support the Championship. If they were all sold out by the time I got around to it, I would have missed out.

I've got no problem with the way it is now. I got my order in 6 hours after the sale began, and still got pretty much what I wanted, and to my knowledge I'm getting what I ordered. Add more bandwith for next year would be helpful. No complaints from me.

I still like the $50 option. It is already availble and should be expanded next year. Become a partner get access to the ROCs a few days earlier than everyone else. Personally, I donate more of the ROCs I get to CTPs and such than I throw ro sell. I want a few of each stamp and then some to donate. A 10 disc limit won't cover what I do with them.

this last sentence nailed it for me. it was a huge mess at the time, but it was well worth the struggle and hours lost when the discs finally came in last night. i think the selling price was fair, but for most of us it wouldn't be worth $15 or $20 to get to choose our weight and exact color, since we're just gonna take the discs out and throw them anyway. well done innova and usdgc, i hope this year's event is better than ever! :D

Solution:
Take pre-orders 3-months prior to production.

Have a cut-off date and stick to it. That way everyone will get what they ordered and the USDGC would be well funded.

Where is the option of paying $25, getting the color and weight that you ordered, being thankful, supporting the USDGC, and not ******** about it on the discussion board? I bet there were more people who ordered and got what they wanted then people who had to make substitutions to their orders.

I think the 50 disc per person limit is fine as long as there are 5000+ discs made. Limiting people to any number less than 50 besides vendors would be a bad idea.

I chose not to vote on the "poll" because I think it's a little too tounge-in-cheek and does not give the option I want.

I buy Champion Rocs to throw because they wear sooooo slowly and nicely. I know people like the wasp/buzz/mrv but the Roc throws best for me overall. I do throw a buzz and have a wasp but I don't have the confidence in them I have in the champ roc.

Second, I buy Rocs to support the USDGC. I hope to qualify one day but even if I don't, it is a prime example of what the future of disc golf could be. It's also how I justify paying more than $15 for a disc.

Third, I buy rocs to collect. I don't really have a collection of Rocs but it's hard not to get caught up in the hype and eBayness of it all a few years later. However, I believe discs are meant to fly overall so even though I'm stashing some CE plastic away, most of it is for throwing stock rather than wall hangin.

It was better this year. It will be better next year. It's still not perfect. How cool is it people get this excited/hot-under-the-collar about disc golf! It's just going to get better as a sport in the future with this passion. I hope they keep selling significant numbers of rocs because I want them to throw over anything else and would hate to pay more than $30 to get a disc I throw and could lose.

Just my $0.02

Is there a "none of the above?" :DActually, the fight it out option is fine with me, but I'd really like to have a chance at some of the more scarce colors for wall discs and to toss. It seems like too many of the clears ended up in the hands of a select few people. I think everybody would like a chance to throw, collect and (dare I say it?) make a buck or two off some of the scarce ones. These suckers are available each year for $25, but there are always people willing to pay a premium price for them. An improved system like the one used this year would be great. But I guess getting a partners' package would ensure I get more of what I wanted this year. But I have my special blends and that's all I really wanted anyway :) rWc

I like the way it is. In 2003, when I lamed out and didn't get to buy them direct, I paid $35 a piece after-market for mine and thought that was fair. So it's not like people can't geet what they want for a fair price.

The option on the clears mentioned above, though, is worth considering. Well, there was no option mentioned but it's a good point that they all ended up in just one person's hands. Since the clears are usually in such short supply (and I think it should be kept that way), maybe a better solution would be to do something like a random drawing of everyone who placed an order on the first day, and then call the lucky ones and give them an opportunity to buy *ONE* of the clears. That way they get dispersed a lot better than they are currently.

It's worth considering.

But all in all, I think it went pretty well this year.

Yeah, I buy Champion Roc to play with it but not as collectible items. Next year, Zonedriven can handle the mass frenzy orders from Roc addicts by providing the lottery. It would be lot of fun, person who won the first pick will grab all the ice discs :D:D:Dor limit run of colors. That way Roc lovers can't complain or make any excuse. Lets go for Lottery system for next year!!!

I don't know how they ran it in 2003, all I know is this. I opened my disc golf shop in the middle of April that year and had no problem ordering 5 CE Rocs. I sold those within a month and ordered 5 more without a problem. The next year when I heard they were released I called Innova and they said they had sold out. I ended up just buying one on Ebay for $40.00 so I had one.

Feb 23 2005, 05:00 PM
if they had the rares labeled as so, they could say for every 4 that are ordered, the 5th one can be a rare, so the most anyone could buy would be 5 rare. any more and the order is canceled. they would be more evenly distributed then ? But this would be Communism :D

I don't know how they ran it in 2003...

Yeah, I said I lamed out and didn't buy one in time. :)

I forgot to mention that I buy the $25 CE Roc to support the USDGC and help make it the bestest tournament in the world. That's the reason I bought my 2001s, 2002, 2004s, and that's the reason I bought my 2005s. (I bought my 2003s to keep my colleciton going since the USDGC had already been helped all it could by Roc sales. :) )

Oh, and if you want to talk about CE Roc whining, you should've heard all the cry-babies complaining about $25 for a CE Roc was not fair back in 2001. Then everybody started complaining about how nobody could buy them and that wasn't fair. Except that they were still available at ZoneDriven while these people were complaining that they couldn't buy them.

People will always complain. Especially in disc golf. So don't try and do anything to stop the whining becaue it won't work. Do stuff because it's the right thing to do.

I remeber exactly what Rhett is talking about. As late as November of 01 you could buy 01 Rocs from Zonedriven. You could by x-outs later than that. There were all kinds of people pissing and moaning on the board how they could not get the discs. It was comical.

I haven't voted in the poll, but i wouldn't mind ZD placing them on Ebay. It wouldn't be 7000 different auctions if ZD used the "dutch auction" feature. There might be 100 different auctions due to color/weight/stamp combo's.

A few more options.

Place the rarer colors one at a time in the middle of a large room with all customers wanting it standing against the walls. Blow a horn and then let it be a true free for all. Last one standing gets the disc. Pay at the door.

2nd - offer weights and not colors with the normal stipulation found on most sites. We will try to fulfill your order +/- 3 grams.

3rd option - Buy the partners pass and be the first in line.
You get first pick before the frenzy begins. Partner passes can be purchased at www.zonedriven.com (http://www.zonedriven.com)

Rick, stop letting the cat out the bag. I don't want other people getting the first chance that I will be getting next year. :D

Personally, I really like my 3 white 177 spectator rocs. I put a sweet flames dye on the one in my bag and have had tons of compliments/offers. It flies really nicely too, a little slower, but very predictable. BTW these discs are FLAT with a pretty nipple on top. I think the whites are the only ones like this. I wont ever miss the USDGC even if it is hurricane conditions.

Feb 25 2005, 03:06 AM
Rocco it won't make a difference. There will not be enough people that buy the you know what and will wait for frenzy day instead.

Funny story is I was talking to a good friend that works down there and he told me that after the you know what day there were still clears left.

The you know what also gives you first shot at the ?new? spectator ROCS if they do it again this year.

Feb 25 2005, 11:47 AM
Well, I plan on buying the you know what but I highly doubt i'll be at the USDGC. Hopefully I will know somebody that will pick one up for me.
