Hey guys, I had somebody mention that Innova's Firebird was working very well for their backhand. Since I throw almost exclusively Discraft, I was wondering what a comparable disc would be? I'm currently using an Elite X XL for my RHBH shots because it has a slightly deeper lip than my Z-XS which I use for a sidearm. Just wondering if Discraft had anything similar to the Firebird.

The two discraft disc's that I find to be similar to say a champion firebird would be a z-predator or a z-xtra. I would say that the z-xtra is the closer of the two though. Others may think differently though.
You can't go wrong with a predator, and it is quite similar to firebird

I'm looking for exactly the same thing. Good luck.
The Flick is about as close as it comes to my FX's. But the rim is hard for me to grip right forehand. I'm going to try a lighter Flick as my 176 is just a little too over-stable. The Flick is the only one so far that is flat, all the rest of Discraft's overstable driver's have dome. The Z-Xtra's I used to throw varied widely from dome to flat and each one flew different. Predator's are nice, nut because of the dome, once turned they can stay there too easily for me. Z-Xtremes are crazy over-stable, but almost too much, they don't have the speed of the Firebird either.
I think a Flick might be your best bet.

if your throwing xl's and xs's you might want to try something not so overstable!! there is a huge difference between xl,xs, and preds, xtra, firebirds!

I would definitely agree with this. I would suggest maybe a crush or a talon. The crush is gonna be a touch more over stable than your xs. And the Talon is a touch more than the crush. I think that a predator or xtra might be a bit much for you.
As for the flick...I would consider this to be about the same as a champ monster...but again...just my opinion...
z-xtra is the closest thing they make to a firebird. predator and flick are more like the starfire and speed demon.
I primarily throw discraft, however, I've picked up a few innova discs at ice bowls, and was wondering what they're discraft counterparts would be
viking
beast
rhyno
viking - z-XS?
beast - flash

good recomendation : or maybe a flash !
innova: valkrie, beast, eagle, teebird, orcs all of these are great discs that are less stable than firebirds etc.
you can probably get some great deals on these discs on this board!!

As Tafe said, I think you best bet may be a lighter z flick. around the 160g range. I really like my z-preds, but they aren't a ce firebird.

Flick or tsunami
If you can learn to throw less overstable discs far without flipping them, you'll be better off. Overstable discs dampen out off-axis torque so you can get away with sloppy technique. Very overstable discs are great into headwinds or when you have to finish very stable, but they can become a crutch. .

Wildcats seem to fly like my JK Valks
The Viking will fly like a XS
There isn't really a companing for the Rhyno.
Beast = Flash?
I think the Tsunamis are very similar to the 1st run CE FL's.

Does anyone have a BEAT BEAT BEAT fusion Tsunami that they want to get rid of. Preferably a light weight one that i can use for flip shots turnovers and rollers. I have a beat 1 right now but its only good for really straight shots and i need one that really beat that i can flip or turnover. If anyone has one of these i would love to take it off their hands. Or if someone just has a lightweight one that they want to get rid of then i have plenty of discs to trade. PM me if you have any of the above :D

1. Get a red tsunami
2. Go to brick wall
3. Throw repeatedly until disc looks like a red headed step child
4. Go to open field and cut roll the hell out of it

I hate the way discs feel when they are all beat in by cement. Maybe i can hang a towel in front of the wall so it wont get so NASTY. I think i will try this. Maybe ill throw it into a wooden fence. Thanks for the advice. I need a turnover Tsunami and a Roller Tsunami and i will have all the drivers i need :D I want a D Tsunami :D

I saw a pro at an event get a new glow dx roc, wrap it in a towel, and proceeded to bash the ever living [*****] out of it against a bench.

This makes no sense to me at all. If indeed beating a disc makes it less over-stable, then you're turning a roc into a cobra or perhaps a storm. Why not just buy a cobra?
The same goes for beating an XS to be a roller, why not buy an express? I've never understood this philosophy of making a disc when you can buy one with the right characteristics or very close characteristics and learn to work with it.
learn you will grasshopper

I do it because i like the the feel of a certain mold in my hand and i feel confident with that mold so if i can get that disc and have an Overstable one a Stable 1 and Understable one and a really flippy one then ill take that over trying to throw 4 different molds. It will make you more consistent and confident in the long run :D

One cannot turn a ROC into a Cobra. A beat Cobra and a beat ROC do not fly the same. :)
I guess you would need some trees around to beat a disc in - not a whole lot of those in Tejas, eh? :D
sure aint no trees in these here parts. but don't make me no nevermind :D

Linds,
You haven't been to Cedar Hill or Z-Boaz yet, eh?
Instead of buying a ton of discs based on someone elses throw, chose discs that complement your OWN throw. If you throw X XL's right now, the Firebird is not going to work for you. It's the exact opposite of the XL. If you're looking to change your style, do it gradually, but you should always chose discs based on your throw. Not Ken Climo's.

Then how do I go about analyzing my style? How do I know that the XL I'm throwing is the best for my style. I primarily throw my Z-XS sidearm. I play the S-curve for my distance. I use a Z-Reaper for my straight/accuracy shots. The XL for forehand as mentioned before. I've tried throwing the Crush, but it seems to turn over way too quickly for my taste. We have a disc trip coming up this summer, and I want to have all the available throws/discs at my disposal. So far I've won the past two years, but this is a longer trip too. Just trying to improve my game/technique.

I have found that using the manufacturers stability and distance guides to be helpful in my throwing analyzation. Sure an XL for you is not an XL for me, but an XL compared to an XS will have the same differences for everybody. Learn a disc backwards and forewards and all its characteristics. Then according to what the manufacturers says the other discs will do purchase according to your desires. XL does not fade as much as you like or does not go as far? Pick up a Crush.
I am a big proponent of having a style of disc for every throw, out of the 25 discs I have in my tournament bag, I have 20 molds. I believe in having the disc do the work and not beating it in till its perfect. I have only 4 beat-in discs in my bag. 1 Teebird, 1 Buzzz, 1 Leopard, 1 Flash. They are for varying degrees of turns or rollers. The teebird, buzzz and leopard I have multiple discs of, I only carry 1 Flash. Another reason that I dont carry too many beat discs, is that if I lose one, I can easily replace my turn over disc. I personally do not have a problem with the different feel of the molds. The only disc I have issues pertaining to the feel, is my putter. And even that has to be a specific color. It has to be a White DX SB Aviar.
I know a guy who was trying to beat in a Champion Whippet to make it turn over, he was banging it against a tree. Luckily I traded him a KC Whippet, which was lighter, for it. But he has yet to turn over that KC Whippet, and that has been 7 months ago.
What's with all this bang the disc on a tree crap? If you want to wear the disc in just flex it back and forth in your hands(bend it like a taco). You can wear the disc in with more consistency and won't leave any dings in the rim. Just bend it a few times then throw it, if it needs more fine tuning then just do it a couple more times. Eventually it will get to that "perfect stability" without being so harsh on the disc. :D

Wow, I used to be the same way, with a bunch of "specialty" discs. I predict that the longer you play, the more you will lean toward certain molds. They will just feel right or fly more consistently based on how you throw. It will happen almost unconciously.
What on earth do you use to carry 25 discs with anyway?

I use the Innova Tour Bag, utilizing the back two pockets for approach discs/putters.
I have found preferences of discs in the year I have been playing. I carry two Wasps, three Buzzes, two Teebirds, three aviars, and two Leopards.
What most people think is crazy is that I have a different bag with different disc for practice rounds. Instead of Leopards and Teebirds, I use TL's in the practice bag, and instead of Buzzzes and Wasps I use Roc's in the practice bag. But that is only for my home course when it is not the week before a tournament. My rational for this is that my tournament discs will not get beaten in anymore then I want them too, so that way they will be perfect when I need them to be.

LOL, yeah I won most of them. I have a complete DX/Pro D tournament set up incase of rain. And almost a compete replacement set of my tournament bag. I have somewhere around 75 discs in my trunk. My wife would kill me if I bought all those. Winning stuff is the only reason she lets me travel on the weekends to tournaments.

still have that many different molds in your bag?
I have trimmed my bag down to a bare minimum. 3 putters, 3 mids(overstable, stable and understable), and 5 drivers(starfire, orc/flick, leopard, sidewinder, and valk). The valk can be taken out of the bag once I start feeling comfortable throwing overhand shots with any of the other discs.

I got a:
173 Z-XS
172 Z-Reaper
169 Z-Crush
168 X-Avenger
170 X-XL
174 Z-Reaper
172 X-XS
174 X-Predator
170 Z-Flick
174 D-XL
174 Z-Wildcat
169 Z-XS
170 D-Stratus
172 D-Wasp
174 X-Buzz
174 CE-Aviar
Each disc has a specific purpose for specific shots. Granted every course I play i don't use all 16 discs every round, but its nice to know that I have the plastic to complete the shot when it's called for.

Played druid today, (shortish course, but you need all your shots) with 2 174 champion aviar putters, a 178 2005 USDGC special blend roc, a 166 champion stingray, and a 166 sidewinder (champion of course)
That is it. I shot one of my better rounds by far a 50, challenging the top dog (he got a 49) !
I plan to make a concerted effort to only carry a few molds.
i cut my bag down bigtime..
i carry a little more than minimum right now:
1x Classic Aviar
1x JK Aviar-x
1x Champ Stingray
1x First Run buzzz
1x Flat Z-buzzz
1x 11x Teebird
1x proline monster.
that's about it for now.. don't really even need the stingray, but it can roll decent so it almost replaces my beat gazelle i lost.
I find that i play much better with less discs. I guess because I have to make the shot instead of the disc.

yep...it also cuts down the number of options you have and you won't second guess yourself as much if the throw is a little off.
