So does this mean if you are 955 and below you can play! Amateur by whose terms??
If it is a non-sactioned event anyone could play any division??
Or is it non-sactioned using PDGA rules (if so 955 and below can play)!

Using PDGA Rules versus PDGA Competition structures are two different things. How would they know what someone's rating is if it's unsanctioned? Looks like you just decide what division you wish to enter. Sounds like something the Carolina Crew might want to go after to help restock their merch for sale (if there's not an A or NT that weekend) :D

i guess its an open invite to all baggers out there!!
I've already contacted the Rev Jessie Jackson and the Rainbow Coalition we are planning a 1000 man march at your tournament!
Why are you discriminating against me and my fellow pro players? We have every right to be able to participate in your event. DON'T HATE or DISCRIMINATE! What gives you the right to say only people who stink can play? We put our pants on just like you, we [*****] in toilets and wipe our asses just like you!
BE PREPARED FOR OUR MARCH AGAINST YOU PRO HATING BIGOTS!

See what I have to deal with here in Tulsa! :( ...Just when I start to get a little confidence about my game, this guy comes around and dumps all over it. It wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't right though. :D

Good point! That was bad verbage. I edited for ya
Jeeeeeez it was a joke! Do you really think I would care about what is going on in North Crackalackin? Didn't the reference to Jessie Jackson and the Rainbow Coalition give you the clue that it was a JOKE!
so sensitive

Feb 17 2005, 08:09 PM
Nina, you should go and de-sensitize them by entering, winning, and then distributing all the plastic coins you won to the ams that finished below the merch line! :)
It's unsanctioned, so you can do it.
Alright, I'll tell you what gives us the right to say who can play or who can't. It is OUR TOURNEY and if we want a tourney that has no pro's then we can do that. And even though it is not sanctioned we do ask for your PDGA# to check to see if you are a pro because some people are not honest and if you have a problem come to the tourney and see if you get to play, but don't feel bad when we turn your **s around and send you home.

So I hafta ask, since you are obviously advertising on here to get players: why aren't you sanctioned?
And why do you think dishonest people would give their correct name/info?
...not that I'd ever think about something like that!

Not trying to burst your bubble but adding a $1000 to your Am purse will not make it the biggest ever or even close. The Texas 10 Charity Tour finals for the last 2 years has added in the range of $10,000 to the Amateur purse each year. This years am payout was over $18,000. Now that was a fun pick your own payout. :D
Back to why Pro's (and Kevin) can't play. :D

Give us a some more detail on how deep you are paying out, and is there a player's package?

Chris didn't you learn that you can't make all the people happy all the time. There are some people who would rather complain than eat. Although, they have brought up some good points.. Which made me realize that you could make everyone happy by having a pro class with no added cash. Let all of the $1000 go towards the ams.
Of course most of the complaints are coming from players over 500 miles away so why should you care.
And just think, you volunteered your time b/c you thought you were doing something great for the sport....and if it's not the largest am payout ever, it will be for South Carolina.
As of now, there might be a players package that will consist of a custom stamped Discraft Elite Z Buzz, or there might not be a players package. The payout will all depend on number of participants but we are looking at in each division will come home with atleast one disc and first place in advanced will probably have close to 400 bucks to spend on discs, etc.
Chris I appreciate your support. The main purpose of the tourney is to get more players especially juniors and first timers in our area to come out and play and the parks and recreation department of Orangeburg was very gracious to give us 1000 dollars to try to get some of these players out by giving away alot of Disc Golf Merchandise. So if any pros want to come and beat recreational and first time starters then come on out and make yourself feel good. More info on the tournment to come
I have nothing against pros, the only ones I have problems with are the ones who don't want to see the sport grow.

I'm a pro who would like to see the sport grow. But large payouts to amateurs who already play the sport isn't in the spirit of what you say above about attracting new juniors and first timers. If the Orangeburg Park & Rec Dept wants this to happen, then I would suggest taking the grand and using it to promote the event, maybe have a band play, pay a pro to host clinics and/or pass out free minis. Have $10 entry fee for first timers and juniors which includes a player pack and if these newbies finish the event, their $10 fee is refunded. It's like a free entry fee but this way, people can't just sign up to get the pack then bail on the event. If I were talking with the Orangeburg Park folks, those are some of the things I think they would feel were worth their contribution to your effort. Big payouts to Advanced and Intermediates is preaching to the choir. You need to increase the size of the choir. Good luck.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing that Chuck did. Rolling that $1000 from the park department into the payout is only going to benefit the experienced players. If the intention of the event is to bring new people out to the park, I'd put most of that money into players' packs that everyone can get no matter what their skill level...
Imagine being able to hand each new player a DX driver, a putter, and a mini for a $10 entry. That $1000 could buy 70-80 such packages at wholesale price. If you have a large contingent of experienced players who want the payout, tell them to organize a side pool for an extra $10-15 and let them win that cash (why not? it's unsanctioned and am-only, don't let poaching pros in). Or just charge those players the extra money and hand out plastic paid for by their entry fees.
When I was in college, our school club got a budget from the university to run an event. We used most of the money to buy DX plastic that went out in players' packs...everybody got two discs and a mini for entering. The money we charged for entry ($10) went into a pool that paid for 6 CTPs AND for the top three in each division to be awarded with CE plastic. This was back when CE was brand-new, so almost none of the players had ever seen it before. We advertised the hell out of the players' pack aspect and we got 40 players, most of which played with their players' pack discs since they didn't have any others.

Thanks for the input. I will definitely mention all of your suggestions to the club and the parks department. The flyer is still in the works so nothing is set yet, but the club will definitely take a look at the different options you all have presented.

It may seem from some of these posts that you can't win, no matter what you do. However, I believe you win---we all win---no matter what you do.
A big thanks to anyone who ever organizes any disc golf event.
A bigger thanks to anyone who can wrangle this kind of extra cash, especially for a non-established, non-sanctioned event. It can only help the game.
I'm sure you'll sort out who qualifies for an "Am only" event, and how to spread the wealth. You can make 1st place really rewarding.....you can spread the payouts to the top 50% or more....or give extravagant player packages, equal or greater to the registration fee, which will WOW the first-timers, and STILL have enough for generous prizes for the winners. No matter what you choose those that come will love it....and I suspect complaints will be from those who wouldn't have been there, regardless.
Pass along thanks to everyone in Orangeburg who's involved in this undertaking. You always do so a great job there. And to the Orangeburg Parks Department; would that everyone had a parks department so supportive!
Thanks David, even though the Orangeburg Crew is relativley new in organizing events, we do what we think and can help the sport. Alot of the things we have learned about running an event or any aspect of promoting the sport is modeled after what the Columbia Crew does. You guys really help promote and grow the sport. Thanks for everything and I will see y'all at the Earlewood Classic.
The final word on the tournament is:
May 7-8, 2005 at the Edisto Memorial Gardens in
Orangeburg, SC
The tournament is all Amateurs and all divisions are 25$ except Juniors which is 15$.
The flyer will be up SOON at SCDGO.net click on home and follow the link to Other SC tournaments.
